Korea women's national basketball team

Is a legit article and it can't be subjected to a speedy even if it doesn't have any "meaningful content." --Howard the Duck 14:28, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Now it is. I've expanded articles about women's national basketball teams (Spain, Russia) and other international basketball-related articles myself in a similar manner, but I'm getting tired of users thinking a rephrasing of the article's title would constitute an article. Many of those non-articles are created by persons whose mastering of the English language is rudimentary at best or who don't have the slightest clue of the topic they are writing about. I mean, the lack of experts isn't their fault, yet those non-articles can't be the answer. My English isn't great at all, and my knowledge of international basketball is patchy to say the least, but I still can distinguish a complete sentence from an incomplete one and useful information from non-useful. I just don't have the time to expand all those articles, though, so I see no alternative to having it deleted. This at least creates red links which are more likely replaced by an article than one of those substubs is, because they are more striking. --Axolotl Nr.733 (talk) 16:10, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

The only thing a non-article lacking any "meaningful content" does is stopping others from creating the article because they just see the blue links and aren't aware of the fact that there is no article beyond this link. IMO, it's still better than a red-linked one. And it'll help other people (esp. anons) to add info since anons can't create articles on their own. Hi there, I actually don't know if "B.o.B." really is a more proper name for the article than the current one, yet I don't see a reason for moving it to "B.o.B. 2010 FIBA World Championship squads

Hey Axolotl - I don't know that much about European basketball, and couldn't find much information (in a language that I could read) on the teams that you removed the blue links from. I created some team pages for notable teams, but on the ones you deleted, I linked those to the leagues and/or the country's basketball federation on the assumption that none of those teams (particularly the Argentine and French amateur teams, plus Abidjan BC) would never have a Wikipedia article about them because they aren't particularly notable. Hey! Well, from the German Wikpedia, I'm used to every team from semi-professional and top-level leagues being notable. I'd be surprised if any of those teams weren't considered notable here (though I couldn't find any specific guideline). On the other hand, I've never been a fan of "let's scrape together every information about that subject available via internet, fix it with a lot of tape, and hope people will mistake this Frankensteinian amalgam for an Encyclopaedic article", but rather of, you know, real Encyclopaedic articles written by authors who know what they're writing about. In this case, that might take some time, but red links are, imo, one of the most important ways of inviting new authors (and yes, there're still some around) - or rather, they would be if IPs were allowed to create articles. That said, I will try my best to find some infos (my French isn't great, though), yet still, in the long term I'd prefer a red link plus the league's name in brackets. The problem is that we have specific guidelines that, as the term suggests, are supposed to specify the general guidelines, but seem to be contradictory to them in some aspects. For example, there are few sources available for many of the competitors at the first modern-day Olympics, but nobody would suggest deleting such articles. So, in a borderline case as this one, it's basically a matter of interpretation, and I find it frustrating that an article which has been kept after a first AfD discussion (not by reaching no consensus, but by agreeing on keeping the article), might be deleted some other time without further explanation. Hi Axolotl. Thanks for reporting the vandal at the village pump. I've left a note at the Admins' noticeboard. see Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive234#Long-term subtle vandalism by IP hopper I've also asked for an edit filter to stop the addition of those names to articles. I've been looking through the range contribs for 192.193.0.0/16 and I've seen a bunch of fake is the brother of so-and-so and fake is the niece of so-and-so stuff being added to articles, which reminds me of a vandal from a year or two ago that added similar false relaitve of so-and-so information to articles. Most of those fake additions have been caught by Zagalejo (talk · contribs), so you might want to ask them if they know anything about the vandal. Yeah, there also is a lot of contributions of alleged "notable residents", "notable alumni", and other (unreferenced) additions to lists of people. Another thing I've noticed is that they sometimes remove 2 or 3 sentences from sprots articles. I haven't checked that closely because the other problems seem to be more severe, but I am somewhat concerned that they may be removing valid content. 64.40.57.126 (talk) 18:47, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

What do You mean by foooling? This player definitely played for Aris (see the pic), whats Your point? I dont believe, that this 17years old guy from India, who declined the submission, ever heard of Greek A1 Ethnike Basketball League or even Aris BC. So how he can decide about that, while half Saloniki knows this player. If I understand right, You consider me for frauding, thats not true, this was my first attempt providing detailled data about Aris players, but when already my first contribution is disputed, there is no reason for further work on Wikipedia. I dont know what was in past or even on other language wikis. You should do better research before fronting people with fraud, this is prejudiction. Let's not start another edit war on Deaths in 2014, god knows everyone is sick and tired of those lol. Saying a news outlet is "sensationalist media" is massively POV but I'll leave the page as-is (without the entry for Ms Pieper). But I'll note that I don't think it should be excluded; especially as it's reported by an established news outlet. A quick skim through the same page shows that very local news outlets and far far smaller publications are accepted as credible sources. Why not Die Welt? --Connelly90 13:19, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi there, it's not like I wouldn't accept Die Welt as a source at all, but in this case, it's rather the circumstances of Ms Piepers death than her having been a notable sportswoman that made this a newsworthy story. Biathlon, especially the women's races, is hugely popular in Germany. Therefore, the German biathletes' failure at the Olympics was a hot topic in the German media. In their article, Die Welt (and other media outlets) cited Ms Piepers death as yet another moral setback for the German Ski Association by explicitly noting that she had been a former team partner of some of the Olympic competitors, that it happened during the Olympics, and that she had used one of her sports rifles to commit suicide. It's this drawing of vague connections that I referred to as "sensationalist". Hey, I appreciate that you seem to be on a mission to clean up basketball player articles that don't meet notability standards (and I have agreed with many of these articles), but it makes zero sense to suggest an article doesn't meet notability standards (not even AfDing it) when it's clear they signed with a team that meets NBASKETBALL - at 16 no less. If you have serious concerns, then just AfD it and let it go through the process. Though frankly it would make less sense to delete an article just to resurrect it in October when the person plays in a Euroleague game. Rikster2 (talk) 16:32, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

GNG is the standard that needs to be met, NBASKETBALL just helps people understand the types of people who generally meet the GNG standard. Do I think a 16 year old kid will play for them in Euroleague play? Actually, it wouldn't shock me and it wouldn't be the first time. Do I think a 16 year old who signed with a Euroleague team that is arguably the highest profile team in Greece probably meets GNG? Yes. I got about 6000 hits on his name in Greek on Greek Google and about half as many again with the name in English. The problem is that all the sources are in Greek. I'll use Translate to try and find a few good ones, but obviously that takes more time than for an American or Australian player where all the sources are in English. If you really want to, you can AfD it and force the issue. I'm just telling you that based on my experience, this guy would easily meet GNG. Rikster2 (talk) 18:55, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

He's the only basketball player born 1998 who has an article (plus a wheelchair basketball player). No already-hyped high school players even among the 1997 births either, just some more Euro (mainly Greek) kids who've already seen some minutes in pro ball. That's fine, that's in concordance with our guidelines. But do we need to extend our scope even further, on players who have only signed with a big name club ('cause that's pretty much everything I can find via google)? Is it really too much of a burden for this article to contain some little notification that the subject's notability isn't actually established yet and rather speculative? You put a tag on that said "this article may not meet WP guidelines" I removed it because I feel confident that it would (GNG). If you want to take that to the next level and AfD it, you should do so. If not, I was fine to remove the tag per the documentation at Template:Notability. I will look for Greek language sources this weekend, but the documentation at the template does not require adding additional sources at the time of removing the tag. So you want me to accept that "we just disagree" while you yourself refuse to compromise (no AfD, but keeping the template in the article)? In fact, that's even what I did, stating that I was fine the way it is, yet you keep arguing and arguing for no reason. Why? I still don't get it, and I don't want to know. The links you provided are not the kind of detailed coverage required by the GNG - if we set the standards this low, WP would be flooded by articles on high school players. There also is a recent example of a similar case that resulted in deletion. Btw, Lountzis did not actually participate in the Adidas Eurocamp and the Jordan Brand Classic (which are targeted at more advanced players) as stated in the article, but in related practice sessions for younger players. That's like calling a participant at the rookies challenge an all star just because it takes place in the same event. So, deletion would be justifiable, but not reasonable because he probably gets notable via NBASKETBALL soon. Until then, I do question the subject's notability for good reason, which should have been reason enough for you not to re-remove that template in the first place. Although repeatedly reverting or undoing another editor's contributions may seem necessary to protect your preferred version of a page, on Wikipedia this is usually seen as obstructing the normal editing process, and often creates animosity between editors. Instead of edit warring, please discuss the situation with the editor(s) involved and try to reach a consensus on the talk page.

If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to be blocked from editing. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. The guy should probably be banned since he has added the same statement 10 times over the last two years. Given that this is almost all of his Wikipedia activity, you could make the case it is a vandalism-only account. Of course, banning him would just mean he'd add the same crap as an IP. I notice you undid this edit of mine here; the reason for it was that Rasmus Larsen redirects to this section now, so simply linking it creates a loop. Under the circumstances, bolding the name seemed a better idea. Another possibility would be to somehow link to his page on the Danish WP. Hello, sorry, I hadn't checked the history of the article Jacob Larsen (basketball) and had just considered it an obvious error. Personally, I see little use in this redirect, especially considering that a) Rasmus Larsen actually was the more notable player and b) there's just one short sentence about him in his brother's article. In the German WP which I'm more used to, this would be a speedy deletion case, but I know policies here are different. All entries in the lists of botanists by author abbreviation should either be covered by the general reference to the IPNI or be separately sourced, as per WP:BLP.
