Route Shields[edit]

The current convention in regards to shielding is that we only put them on articles about specific routes. So the A8 would get one, but the Gore Hill Freeway would not :) -- Nbound (talk) 03:36, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It isnt correct, Ill fix that! - The latest discussion is here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Australian_Roads#Dropping_shield_images_at_the_top_on_the_.22new.22_IAusR, but there has been some discussion before that in the archives. M2/A2 vs M2?[edit]

I am thinking of renaming the current M2 (Sydney) page to M2/A2 (Sydney), meaning the article will talk about both motorway and non-motorway sections. This is because it is an overview and as you said, having two separate overviews seems to be an "overkill". What do you think? Marcnut1996 (talk) 07:57, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not really in favour of that. First, it's a messy title. I think it's best to consider M2 and A2 as distinct routes, and hence should have separate articles. I realise the Highway 1 article goes against this, but I think it's appropriate to consider it a special case, both because of its historical/navigational significance, and because that's the only NSW route I'm aware of which has discontinuous sections with the same route number. In all other cases (e.g. M4/A4, M2/A2) I think separate articles are the way to go. Ausmeerkat (talk) 08:33, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well yes obviously the number is the same between A2 and M2, but the overall identifier is different so the two can be considered different entities. Thats true, but you have to take into account roads that will have 'island' routes like (hypothetical only) A0, M0, A0. The two A0 ends wouldnt be considered the same route (as opposed to the "island"). The route would just be those routes suffixed with 0. If we apply a catchall naming scheme it simplifies it and prevents uneeded disambigs for other routes. It might be worth having a discussion on the articles talk page or at AURD, and open this to a wider audience. Thoughts? :) -- Nbound (talk) 10:38, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Very happy to open this up to wider discussion, as there isn't a clear-cut "right" answer. While I like the idea of a single approach that works everywhere, it's worth noting that the hypothetical situation you discussed only exists on one route (A1/M1/A1/M1/A1/M1/A1/M1 :-), so optimising for one corner case may not be the best approach. Just a quick note that C282 has not been uploaded and is currently read as x15px in the Major Intersections & Towns table. If you like, I can post some additional Victorian route numbers that need to be converted if you wish to, and will progressively upgrade all Victorian roads with your fantastic updated shields.
