Citations

In the reference section of [[Berlei]], I have a lot of anonymous references. This makes it hard to refer to them in the text .... and it looks bad. While they vary in quality, the references are germain to the article and should be included.

How can I give then a 'tag' when there is no author mention in the reference??

I think you want WP:CITE, which explains better. Generally, {{cite web}}, {{cite book}}, and {{cite magazine}} are the most used citation templates. Each of them explains how to use it, but for those situations where they don't apply, use <ref id="something">My reference material here</ref> and then later use <ref id="something" /> to re-reference that same material. While anonymous sources may in some cases be useful, beware that they may not be reliable according to our policy. I hope that helps. :) ~Kylu (u|t) 04:00, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm looking for advice on how to refer to the articles from the text. I have read the citation guidelines. A Sydney Meetup

G'day all - I'm dropping this note in to let you know that there's to be a Wiki Meetup the week after next, on Tuesday, 21st at 18:00 at The Paragon in Circular Quay. If you've ever thought about popping along to one of these, but haven't had the chance - now's the time! If you love the idea, but the time and / or place don't quite work for you, please do feel free to wiki edit away at the meetup page and I'm sure we can sort something out :-) Meetups are a great way to share wiki-thoughts, meet wiki-friends, and generally learn how to prefix all areas of your life with wiki- :-)

I'm waiting to hear back from a checkuser on the best way to frame the request under the rules - basically, I'm going to point them to my summary, with all the IPs listed, and see if they can just use that as a basis for determining if a rangeblock will be successful. I think the ranges 84.100.98.0/24, 84.102.229.0/24, and 86.73.32.0/24 are a conservative block. The each only block 256 IPs each. I used http://toolserver.org/~chm/blockcalc.php to construct them. Apparently an Admin can block the IPs at Special:BlockIP. I would suggest checking the box to only block anonymous edits. Details at mw:Range blocks. Hi.

You had the article tagged as G11: "Blatant advertising. Pages which exclusively promote some entity and which would need to be fundamentally rewritten to become encyclopedic. Note that simply having a company or product as its subject does not qualify an article for this criterion."

I really don't see this as being "blatant advertising" - it's a prosaic stub which identifies the subject and gives a small amount of context, without saying much more, and so falls very neatly under the second sentence. The only promotional-like part, I guess, is the phrase "popular in the late 1970s", but it seems a bit much to condemn it for one cheery word. Promotional would include a screed about how brilliant they were, a plethora of glowing reviews, but it's hard to be promotional without very much content.

It doesn't really fulfil any other CSD criteria, for that matter. The usual suggestion in cases like this is either A1 or A7, but it certainly provides context, and it asserts notability through a thirty year career and being tied into a named "movement". If we're not willing to accept that as indicators of notability, which would be reasonable, following the link to jawp tells even a monolingual Anglophone like myself that they had a lengthy output culminating in three different "best of" albums, which ought to suggest something :-)

Sydney Meetup

Hi all,

It's meetup time again in Sydney - hopefully you'll be able to come along for friendly chat and drinks about all things wiki - topics will no doubt include the Chapter - perhaps with planning for the upcoming AGM, the general state of wiki-play, and the traditional candle lighting to encourage the mythical flagged-revisions extension to make its way on to the wiki. I agree your decision is correct, but....

The article is written by the marketing manager Special:Contributions/Projjol and certainly is an attempt to use WP for promotion of the business. See Media:Surfpin_website.jpg.

I think the article should be cut down and merged into another article that covers the industry.... for example: Electronic money. I have no idea where Surfpin fits in the industry.... so how much emphasis does it deserve???? Regards, Ariconte (talk) 20:21, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Senomix Timesheets page?

Hi,

I just logged in today to add more detail to the Senomix Timesheets Wikipedia page located at:

However, I see that you marked it for speedy deletion, with it removed before a -hangon- could be posted in response.

As far as I can tell, the page itself did not match the "Unambiguous advertising or promotion" reasons under which you marked it. There was no advertising on that page and I was careful in writing the text to ensure it met Wikipedia's standard for software descriptions. There was no promotional chatter or other garbage which I'm sure you would see from auto-generated spam pages -- it was a description of the product: One of the first commercial applications to use Sun's Java Web Start technology.

To clarify the article and ensure it is not confused with promotional material, I have added in an external reference to the Sun Microsystems 2004 Swing Sightings journal in which the software was first mentioned and will obtain additional materials to cite for relevant content over the coming week. Other article text was also adjusted to clarify the listing, with a sentence describing the software's functionality (which could possibly be construed as promotional) removed entirely.

Would those adjustments resolve your previous concerns about the entry's content?

You may be right in your assumption that WP:GNG is not met (and WP:NOTNEWS). If it's not a hoax, then it seems extremely local in nature -- google news doesn't seem to turn up anything. For one thing, you're not the creator, so you shouldn't place a hangon: they're only for the creator of the article. Just wanted to thank you for your patience and coaching in the Wikipedia process. A new world for me, and quite enlightening.

More work to do on Diane Nash, and will take a look at other civil rights figures, just to make the sources are in. Kids use Wikipedia a lot, and Martin Luther King's birthday is a few weeks away. Lots of school essays. A good time to pitch in on clean up.

Meanwhile, haven't forgotten about Elise Boulding, just waiting for books to arrive. Decided I was seeing a piecemeal story, and needed the bigger picture. Hopefully that will get revisited soon.

Conflict Continuum Article

Hello Ariconte

Months ago - nearly a year in fact - you were a very active participant in the editing of an article I posted in 2008, Conflict Continuum. It was my attempt to explain a model created by educator and theorist Andra Medea. After I posted the article it immediately acquired a few tags (orphan, cleanup, original research), which I tried to fix by adding links to other Wikipedia entries and source references. To no avail. The tags stayed. Eventually, seeing that except for the tags it was otherwise attracting little interest I turned my attention to more urgent matters and left my article to fend for itself. (Essentially, I had to find paying work. But I'll leave my personal life travails out of this.)

Every once in awhile I came back to check on it, and was mildly relieved that it remained live. Then, earlier this year, I saw that someone - or perhaps a committee of someones - had cut it down to a stub and grafted on a capsule description of an unrelated conflict continuum theory developed by someone named Elise Boulding. I thought, "OK, they just didn't like it for some reason. It's been living on borrowed time anyway." This past week I discovered Andra Medea herself had showed up in December 2010 to make some edits, which prompted a flurry of activity. And ultimately the changes that diminished my article to its present state.

I've learned some interesting things reading the exchanges that broke out. Apparently there was skepticism, never explicitly stated as such, that I really existed; the original article was of sufficiently high quality no stranger could possibly have been responsible for it. Wasn't it a dead giveaway that this Rawland character had contributed nothing else to Wikipedia? Well to borrow from Stephen Crane, "A man said to the universe: 'Sir, I exist!'"

Of if it can't go up under the original Conflict Continuum title, perhaps under a new title that makes clear it's about Medea's model only. I have a few more references to address the problems that attracted tags the first time.

My memory of the issues is: The original article was like an essay... and some thought it was promoting Ms Medea's book. etc. Please read WP:OR, particularly the sections comparing primary and secondary sources, then just do what you think is right. Boy, I don't agree with that at all. There was a sentence in one section and a portion of a paragraph in another that, looking back, I'd say strayed into essay territory, but as for the rest the tone I aimed for was that of a neutral summary. As for promoting "Conflict Unraveled," the text of the article never mentions the book. It was only cited as a source. My impression was that Widefox thought Medea was using the article to promote her book and herself (he was a bloody great thug about it too), and maybe thought she was using my name as a cover. Perhaps that's because I was absent from the discussion.

In any event, there's probably a different reason the article can't stand as originally written. According to Wikipedia's definition, the Rogue Messiah section of the article was original research because I imposed a novel interpretation and structure on the raw material. It just so happens AMedea liked my interpretation. But that's neither here nor there. As written it doesn't meet the standard, yet that's the part of the article I most want to have in. You requested speedy deletion under G1(patent nonsense) of Template: Ship USNS.....(Sorry but I forgot the rest of the name), however G1 only apples to pages that are made up of text like this: jndhdndjsnsjnsbshshdjshjssjnsjiaallqpwkakkqka. Basically, if you can understand it G1 doesn't apply. The page still needs deletion because that is not a template but an article, however, it would not be deleted under G1. Just letting you know. I spent 2 months researching Kris Herzog, the world he lives and works in is primarily reported on by media sources like TMZ and TMZ.com, CelebDirtyLaundry, LickAblecelebs.com, RadarOnline.com, etc.... I also included more mainstream ones like; Los Angeles CBS 2 / KCAL 9, People Magazine, US Weekly, Life and Style weekly and several others listed on my Wikipedia page, which combined have published over 247 stories about Herzog, his Book, My True Hollywood Story and/or his company, The Bodyguard Group over the last 4 years.

As for Independent, since over 50% of the stories on TMZ and TMZ.com do NOT show Herzog in a good light, I would say they those are as Independent as you get.

The 21 Independent and verifiable sources I list the include several national news media outlets like: Los Angeles CBS 2 / KCal 9 which have aired 2 News Anchor Sharon Tay in depth news investigations about Herzog (re Mel Gibson) for a total of over 10 minutes of air time, it was then re run nationally and internationally.

Herzog has been the central figure in over a dozen national and international news stories in just the last 4 years and that is far more than thousands of others who currently have pages on Wikipedia.

Herzog owns the only company in the United States that gets jobs for free for U.S. Navy SEAL team members and others.

Herzog was a key and central figure in some of the biggest news stories of 2009, 2010, 2011, Mel Gibson and Herman Cain.

Herzog's story is noteworthy and as 50% or more of the news stories I have sighted DO NOT paint him in a good light, this is clearly* NOT** self promotion, advertising or and auto biography.

• **TMZ calls him a convicted felon who likes to impersonate cops, etc....

When you Google search: 1. Kris Herzog, 2. Kristian Herzog or 3. Kris Herzog Book, you get millions of results and Herzog has a higher standing and more noteworthiness than thousands of *people that currently have Wikipedia pages.

• Like his contemporary Gavin De Becker. who currently has a Wikipedia page.

I have never met or spoken to him and only started this project to learn about Journalism and Wikipedia.

The negative entry about Herzog and 99% of the negative comments about him in every News story about Herzog, is by a stalker that has been stalking Kris Herzog for years, he is filing a civil case against her and his Attorney has already started to look for her, to have her served with a Restraining Order and Civil papers, one of her alleged witnesses will not stand up for her and have already stated she misquoted him, the other has been named in the civil suit and will be served papers soon.

Court Records Indicate: This female stalker uses many names and has already been arrested for stalking Herzog and other celebrities in the past, she was committed to the Arizona State Mental hospital twice for stalking.

It is a classic case of e-media or social media stalkers or "haters", people that will never be you, so they attack you for no reason.

I did a check with the BBB of America, in 44 years NO current or former client has ever sued or even filed a complaint against Mr Herzog or his company.

If you read her complaint carefully she offers NO eye witness testimony about anything she alleges, NONE PERIOD.

SHE HAS never MET or spoken to Mr Herzog in any way, shape or form, except to email his company weekly, begging and pleading for an interview of him or any of his Celebrity clients.

Her alleged witnesses have NEVER met Mr Herzog or witnessed anything they have alleged.

If we are to go by the FACTS and ONLY the FACTS here they are:

His 43 year old company The Bodyguard Group.

Herzog's web site CLEARLY states that they are NOT a security guard company, but ONLY a private referral group of elite military members.

These same people that attack him here on Wikipedia have made dozens of complaints against Mr Herzog and 100% of them have found to be UNFOUNDED and they were ALL dismissed.

Herzog's criminal record, from altercations with the aggressive criminal Paparazzi.

Herzog had stated in public interviews and fully admits to having thousands of violent altercations for the aggressive criminal Paparazzi.

Out of these thousands of violent, 100% work related altercations, Herzog has be charged in 3 cases, one 21 years ago, on 12 years ago and one 5 years ago. ALL 3 were verbal ONLY altercations, NO injuries, NO serious violence has ever been alleged. (pushing shoving excluded)

To have only 3 cases, all misdemeanors but 1, out of thousands of work related altercations aggressive criminal Paparazzi, gives Mr Herzog a record of staying out of trouble 99% of the time.

My father is a District (State's Prosecuting) Attorney, he pulled ALL of Mr Herzog's Police reports and court records.

As for concerns about Herzog being violent or dangerous, My Father, after speaking to the Officers involved with Herzog said this: "Herzog is not made for Hollywood, he to far to direct, upfront and honest and that makes enemies fast in the world he works in, he using the images of himself with celebrities to get jobs for U.S. Veterans for FREE, that pisses off the normal security companies that do not do it for free."

Herzog's criminal record, from altercations with the aggressive criminal Paparazzi.:

Of ALL of Mr Herzog's courts cases, ALL have been dismissed, PERIOD. (1 after a plea deal, to stay out of trouble for 3 years, which he has and that was dismissed as well).

If ANY of the so called PI or companies had the impressive Celebrity photos like Herzog does, they would also use them to get jobs, just not free of charge for U.S. Veterans, like Herzog and his father before him, has been doing since 1967.

His attackers do not have a web site like Herzog, with thousands of celebrity photos, so they are jealous of his success.

Members of The Secret Service and Herman Cain's staff had been on Herzog's web site for several days BEFORE Herzog was hired by the Herman Cain campaign, what does that tell you. Maybe they know more about the REAL Kris Herzog than any of us.

Has Herzog been in trouble, yes he has, but I think we all deserve a 2nd chance and ALL reports were Herzog did an outstanding job protecting Herman Cain, evidenced by the photos of Herzog with Herman Cain, taken AFTER the TMZ story broke and Herzog was headed home.

If Herzog is so bad, why is it that after thousands of stories have been run about him, NOT one ex girlfriend, NOT on ex Employee, NOT one ex Client has ever said anything negative about him ?

If he is so bad, why don't ALL the celebrities demand to be taken off of his web site ?

Maybe Herzog is just a human as any of us, not perfect, made mistakes, but even his worst critics have NEVER offered any proof that he is not what he says he is, a U.S. Veteran Helping his fellow Veterans with FREE of charge job placement.

The information on getting started with the editing process I am sure will be very helpful. Learning about the prefix WP in front of medicine proved to be the open sesame. I had wasted more time just trying to get there. It was an enormous help. Now I an set up with the Cardiology group and can start moving forward with my projects. I did encounter one difficulty in following the directions. I was told to copying a listing that was already there and so I did, however there was a period (.) elevated from the bottom of the line to midline position. How is that done? I cannot find it in any of my shortcut lists.

Thanks for your advice on COI

I absolutely understand why editing a page with which I have strong connections is discouraged. The issue, though, is that my company's page as it stands is substantially biased, whereas the edits I am trying to make would reduce that bias immensely, if not completely. Our page currently reads like a self-promoting advertisement and has been left that way for quite some time.

There is no question that an edited version would contribute more constructively and add more value to Wikipedia than the existing one. Is there any way for me to submit my edits for approval from a third party? If not, do you have any suggestions as to how I might get those edits made? I'm happy to disclose my affiliation on our page if that would make a difference. You were right - I edited the Fredreick C. Leonard article a bit and was able to make edits to my company's page from there. Now that I have made it more objective and up-to-date, is there a way to request that an objective third party review the page to remove the "wikify" and "advert" flags? Have a look at Wikipedia:Getting started, start with the first line Wikipedia:Who_writes_Wikipedia. There are about 140,000 editors of which 1% (1400) are administrators ... more experienced editors. So I don't think your post was changed by an 'admin'. Just by someone who thought his version was an improvement (see WP:AGF). As far as RS, the difficulty seems to be that there is/are far more un-RS than RS, so what is taken for use is merely what happens to be available or convenient. Also worth noting is that paradigmatic concensus is always challenged but the concept of agreement must be different in its composition (i.e. lacking un-RS, RS present).DJC (talk) 13:54, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Regarding Copyright problems with Group (film)

I do hold the copyright on Group, the movie, starring Carrie Brownstein. Forgive me, as I've not been part of creating anything on Wikipedia before, but we are deluged with requests about the movie since Brownstein's success on Portlandia, and figured we'd be doing everyone a favor by getting into out about this earlier acting project she stars in.

However, if the image is a problem - which I gather it is - let's delete it. Our goal here, and as stated, I am the copyright holder, is to make information available to more people.

I own the movie, Group, the official website associated with the film - www.groupthemovie.com, and the production company, Wovie, that made the film.

I hope this clears things up - does it? Also, is there any chance that page was saved some place or will it have to be created all over again?

ectrodactyly clarification

I did not add an article, I removed a few words from a sentence. The article is about ectrodactyly, and the first sentence read, "Ectrodactyly...also known as Lobster Claw..." and that is not an acceptable term. People with ectrodactyly are not lobsters, they do not have lobster claws, they have hands. That offensive term was coined by the original Grady Stiles, who used his ectrodactyly as "Lobster Boy" in a circus freak show back in the early 1900s. ABC television had a special five years ago using that term, and that's where the reference was cited from. Don't you know that when ABC re-ran that same show recently, over 140 people from our group emailed them, asking them NOT to use that term!! It's like calling people who wear glasses 'four-eyes' and mentally disabled people 'retards' and so on. We're trying to educate people that ectrodactyly is simply a genetic deformity, not a 'Lobster Claw' syndrome! WLM

Hi Ariconte, I saw your feedback for the WLM mobile app. The countries available for uploading monuments are listed under "participating countries" on the main landing page (available from the Wikimedia Commons homepage and also from here: WP:WLM). Australia is not a participant, probably because there was no one to work on the lists, which is pretty labor intensive. I myself put a lot of effort into translating lists into the English Wikipedia for the Wallonian portion of Belgium, and to my delight I see that they are being used! I wish I had had time to do the Flemish ones, but that will be a project for next year. I am not sure what you mean; do you mean the app just stops? When I choose "Browse countries", I see that Australia isn't listed, which is correct behavior. The "nearby" function will not work if there is nothing nearby. Jane (talk) 08:39, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

I expected the app to allow me to take a picture and then upload it to commons with the matched time and GPS data. If that can be done, I don't know how. There don't seem to be any user instructions that are not related to the contest. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 08:42, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Oh well of course that would not be possible, because without the infrastructure of having the identifier for the subject in an appropriate list, there is no basis for uploading content to Commons. The whole idea of the app is that the "encyclopedic content" rule is covered by the subject being in a "list of wanted objects". Otherwise people could upload their birthday party photos and so forth. You can match any picture to GPS data and timestamps, but that doesn't mean it is a photo worthy to be uploaded to Commons. That is analgous to saying 'You can not crete an article in Wikipedia unless it is on a wanted articles list. There are lots of images in commons that were not on lists when the were uploaded. Confuses me, Ariconte (talk) 11:41, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Of course you are right in the sense that the app seems to be overly restrictive, and it would be great to have an app for the default upload wizard that adds your geocoordinates and timestamp (I think the default uploader does do that if your camera allows the geocoordinates to be sent through). I think the problem here is with perception about what the scope of the WLM app is: the WLM app is only for the contest, so each photo needs to be within the constraints of the contest, which by definition are the lists. Without the lists, no jury would be able to judge pictures in an orderly way, since they would have no way of knowing whether the object was in fact on a cultural heritage list or not. This problem is a catch-22 for many countries however. Germany has no central heritage agency, so only a few regions are participating. To make it seem less restrictive, they have allowed uploads without an identifier. Unfortunately I don't speak German, so I can't quite figure out how they manage this with the judging and everything. Jane (talk) 14:26, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
