Discussion[edit]

Can anyone help me as ho HOW the article Calgary Science School needs to be cleaned up??

Hello, first let me say the tagging of the article you wrote isn't meant as something mean to you or even necessarily a message for you to fix it. It's a way we tag things so that people who want to format articles can find the ones that need to be formatted. I have added the tag back to the article. Having that tag on it just puts it on a list for people in the cleanup project :)
If you would like to fix it up yourself that would be great too, the two pages I would suggest reading for help with it are Wikipedia:Manual of Style and Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. Remember this isn't an essay but an encyclopedia, so we are ideally only looking for factual information presented from a very neutral point of view. The manual of style is very helpful, but one of the best ways to learn about good formatting is to look at a few of our featured articles and see what formatting standards they implement.
Hope that answered your question, if not feel free to update it either on my talk page or on the newcomers page where you listed your original question. - cohesiontalk 03:35, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have Cleaned up and added to Calgary science school and removed the Cleanup tag. Please message me here if you still think this page needs to be cleaned up. Ardo191 00:59, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Css.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Css.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator.

CSS.jpg is copyright Calgary Science School 2003. Can we still use it?

A word of advice[edit]

If you want a page protected, please go to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection, not Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Scobell302 04:27, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't add the {{sprotected}} tag to articles that are not semi-protected, as you did to Bill Gates. Adding the tag does not change the protection status of an article but it does mislead editors. Thanks, Gwernol 17:54, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted page[edit]

I'm not quite sure what article you are referring to. Perhaphs you have the wrong admin. My deletion log doesn't really show that page. Pepsidrinka 02:04, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. So I guess I *did* delete it; way back in April. Here is the log. I don't think I would be a good idea for me to tell you who created the page. Nothing personal, I just don't see the need to do so. Pepsidrinka 23:49, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, the person who created the page used a throwaway account, so IMO, it won't really help much anyhow. And the editor hasn't edited in quite some time. Pepsidrinka 19:27, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

THE WIKIPEDA IRC SPAM PROJECT IS RECRUITING NOW

WHY ME
Your recent request to use VandalProof software has been refused as you have too few edits to the English Wikipedia.
We need editors to look through recently edited pages and decide whether the links are spam or not.
If the link qualifies as spam, you will need to revert the page to remove the link and warn the 'spammer'.
This will increase your edit count and allow the VandalProof team to approve you in future !
In fact, the Wikipedia IRC Spam Project shares many VandalProof administrators and users.
HOW TO JOIN

  • 1. Install an IRC client.
(ChatZilla, IceChat and X-Chat are free. X-Chat works on all platforms) - a full list is available here.
  • 2. Visit irc://irc.freenode.net/wikipedia-spam
This channel lists, in real time, all external links added to Wikipedia.
Around 50% of the links listed are suspicious and need to be checked.
We flag especially suspicious links in RED.
  • 3. Begin Checking Links
Click on any diff (the Wikipedia URL) listed in the IRC channel to begin checking and reverting as necessary.
    If you revert, remember to place a spam warning {{subst:spam1}} → {{subst:spam4}}
We need to be able to block persistent spammers just as we do persistent vandals.
  • Remember - If you need help or admin intervention visit irc://irc.freenode.net/wikipedia-spam-t

POLICY Before you begin, please read WP:EL and WP:SPAM. These polices are the basis of spam fighting.

Plaistow[edit]

The link I added was a reference supporting my statement on the diversity of Newham, the Index of Multiple Deprivation is a government document detailing this, how is this irrelevent or worthy of reversion? 84.43.49.23 02:42, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As this was a reference to a governmental source to substantiate a claim, please suggest what better way I could have achieved this than to link directly to the government source in question. This was hardly a link to a business, fansite etc. JamJar 02:55, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've reverted the changes, but removed the link, instead linking to the wiki article referenced above. I'm not John Prescott, nor for that matter do I have any other involvement in the Department for Communities and Local Government. Hopefully this is satisfactory JamJar 03:20, 12 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

It's my understanding that warning a user of a speedy delete may be appreciated in some cases, but it isn't necessary all the time. The difference between speedying a page and the more deliberative prod and AfD procedures is that speedy deletion is reserved for pages which are obviously and blatantly inappropriate for Wikipedia. Most of the pages I speedy tag are their author's sole contribution. In such cases, I think it's safe to assume 1)that the author doesn't particularly care about the quality of wikipedia and 2)that the author is aware that their page is not appropriate, and is probably aware that it will soon be deleted. When there is a significant chance an author might become a serious contributor, and failing to notify them of a speedy deletion might alienate them from Wikipedia, I notify them. Generally, however, I feel such notifications are a waste of time for the sake of politeness that is unlikely to be appreciated. If you feel differently, however, by all means notify users of speedy tags. Cheers, —Swpb talk contribs 20:05, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

nowiki tag[edit]

Another note - when you refer to a template, as you did on my talk page, rather than actually using it, you might want to put the template inside nowiki tags, so that it appears as {{db-bio}}. This will keep the talk page from appearing on automatically generated lists of pages transcluding that template. I would prefer not to have my talk page speedied ;) —Swpb talk contribs 20:14, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can I ask you review your addition of the db-bio tag on the Keith Rowlands article. I could agree with the tag for the pretty awful holding text the originator put up, but the article has significantly improved. Thank You! Rgds, - Trident13 20:21, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DB Blanked[edit]

Just fyi, when someone creates a article that was marked with a db-speedy, if he/she blanks the entire page (not just the speedy tag but everything) we generally mark it wiht {{db-blanked}}. Just wanted to give you a heads up. :) -WarthogDemon 02:36, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alexander Litvinenko[edit]

Please consider removing the tag you placed on this article, for the reasons I have stated on the talk page. This possible poisoning in a London restaurant (claimed to have been done by the Russian government against a critic who is notable even without this controversy) is a very big deal with regard to foreign relations, and could cause quite a bit of trouble for Putin, depending on what Scotland Yard turns up. This is a major deal, and a search on google news shows many links to articles - shown on the BBC to the Drudge Report and beyond. Tuviya 03:14, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy-tagging of Elizabeth B. Lacy, Justice[edit]

This article is admittedly awkwardly titled, but clearly not a speedy. The version you tagged plainly asserted notability, and the first female Supreme Court justice of a US state more than meets the threshold of notability. Please be more careful before speedy-tagging biographical articles. Opabinia regalis 04:22, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WARNING[edit]

Dear Ardo: Edits such as this one are ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. By tagging newbies' articles for speedy deletion within seconds of creation you are harassing legitimate users inviolation of common courtesy and WP:BITE. You are thus disrupting this project. If I catch you violating BITE again, I will block you. This is your only warning. - crz crztalk 05:07, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can aso add that if you want to avoid problems like these, you can simply follow this rule: If you're not real sure if an article should be tagged, don't tag it. If it's something that should be tagged and you don't tag it, someone else will. All of us editors work together. Oh, and if anyone gets on you at first, just tell them "Hey! I'm new here!" It's hard to learn the ropes. (Heck my first honest-to-goodness edit on a wiki accidentally defaced the article...) Good luck! :) -WarthogDemon 07:42, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:What can I do??[edit]

Thanks for the compliments. =) Okay, now if you want to get 250 mainspace edits, I suggest you either do vandal-fighting by patrolling Special:Recent Changes and reverting and warning users for vandalism. You can also just pick a group of poorly written articles and expand and rewrite them. Or...you can go to the Wikipedia backlogs, and help copyedit, fix up POV issues, etc. Copyediting is usually good practice for new users, so read WP:COPYEDIT and find some articles to copyedit at Category:Wikipedia articles needing copy edit. All of these are great ways to contribute to Wikipedia, and can help you get to 250 mainspace edits quickly. Nishkid64 19:41, 19 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

CrzRussian[edit]

I saw you had a little problem with CrzRussian, dont worry about it, he likes to throw his weight around wiki like he owns the place and its nothing big, I did find it rude what he said though and the funny thing was he is a hypocrite in what he wrote as I've seen him do this many MANY times myself, imho he is the worst admin wiki has at the moment and should be removed. Alas I had to sign out and change my IP because he has been harrasing me a great deal recently, and I would rather not be identified. My advice is stay out of his way, he cant handle what little power he has in life and will abuse it, I wouldnt like to see a good admin get problems from him. Congrats on becoming an admin, from your history you look like you'll make a good contribution to the site :) G'luck in the future and messaging me on this IP is pointless as its about to change :P Just wanted to let you know the situation. From a member of the wiki bad apple patrol.

Wait a sec.. I'm not an admin ? ... "I wouldnt like to see a good admin get problems from him. Congrats on becoming an admin..." Anyone?? Some clarification here? Ard0 02:52, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification and Apology[edit]

Dear Ardo: The words I chose in rebuking you were disproportionately harsh and therefore obscured my real message. I apologize.

What I meant to say is as follows. This is a collaborative project. People come together here to write an encyclopedia. Some are "established users", most are newcomers. They come in, put something down, and frequently leave. Now, a new wikipedian can make any number of mistakes. They can get their policy mixed up in an AfD vote, they can write an article that fails notability guidelines, or accidentally screw up an edit and delete something. These are no big deal - they're fully reversible, and nobody really cares. One thing that does leave a permanent impact is when brand new users posting their first ever legitimate article encounter unreasonable resistance from the eager crack-force called the New Page Patrol.

Deletion of other people's legitimate work is serious business. We must respect their efforts, at least in order that we not earn a reputation as a place where newcomers are not welcome, to say nothing of common courtesy. When you tagged an article within less than one minute of creation for speedy deletion - when that article was a good faith effort and did not meet WP:CSD criteria - I decided to come over here and tell you why this was wrong. When I saw two warnings from the same day for the same thing, and reviewed your contributions, I realized that we may have a more serious problem and I decided to upgrade my message to a threat.

I hope you understand my motivation and are not offended. - crz crztalk 05:30, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please also see the message I left in response to your post on the noticeboard. Newyorkbrad 13:27, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To weigh in as a relatively new user to Wikipedia, I must say I found it VERY offputting that you attempted to delete my article for notability reasons without knowledge of the subject or even a simple google or news daemon search to see if the article had necessary notability and relevance. It seems to me that you are just going for a large number of individual edits, and instead of doing something like, say, contributing to the encyclopedia, you find it easier to wantonly apply speedy-deletion tags to new content, because most people gauge that kind of contribution with bots that don't know the difference between good changes and bad. The fact that you are either an administrator or in consideration to become one has shocked me, I must admit - I don't expect such conduct from respected users, let alone admin. Tuviya 17:28, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CrzRussian[edit]

Can you take a look at this controversial revert? [1] It appears it's sort of a drive-by without any discussion, it removed reliably sourced and footnoted information. Thanks. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kiyosaki (talkcontribs) .

Um ... that's a legitimate question, Kiyosaki, but I'm not sure why you are asking it of this user. Newyorkbrad 22:27, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good plan. - crz crztalk 03:04, 21 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

minimal requirements for sysop[edit]

this is minimal: 3000 good edits, +4 months here at least, a lot of community visibility, and deep meaningful participation in several project-level processes, such as deletion, page moves, vandal-fighting, etc. - crz crztalk 04:13, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If I can add to that, a lot of RfA participants also like to see a high rate of using edit summaries, which are useful to newpage and vandalism patrollers. The summary doesn't have to be long, especially for repetitive edits (like "rvv" for revert vandalism), but some hint what change you made. If you find yourself forgetting to include the summaries, you can go to your Preferences and select a setting that will remind you. Regards, Newyorkbrad 04:16, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion[edit]

Hi. I don't think participation inequality is nonsense so I removed the {{db|nonsense}} tag you added, but if you want to {{prod}} or afd it instead, I won't object. I don't know if the idea is notable enough, but it didn't seem like a CSD. Angela. 04:44, 23 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Ard0 06:01, 25 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

I removed the speedy deletion tag from Peter Clover which you added as "nonsense" within the first minute of the article's existance [2]. If you took 30 more seconds to do a Google search, you would have seen that this is an actual author and not nonsense. Please be more careful and thoughtful when tagging articles. Thanks, Metros232 17:54, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You need to be more careful about what you are marking for deletion. You've been warned and people have repeatedly brought this up to you. If I see it again, I might have to try to figure out how to make a request for an admin to comment on it. I think it's a disservice to the site, even if you are trying to get your edit count up. Tuviya 23:06, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I try to tred lightly in the new pages, but even so, I keep messing something up and getting in trouble because I marked something for nonsense cause it was two sentences long and one of them was about ponies and such. Alot of the pages I see, I leave them if I'm not sure. I click almost every link, and end up marking maybe every 3rd or 4th one for speedy. Ard0 23:26, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Marking pages for speedy deletion is one of the most controversial things an editor here can do. You might want to take on some less prominent tasks until you've had a little more experience here. I've been here 5 months now and I've only ever speedied a page for blatant personal attacks. Newyorkbrad 23:29, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Like...? Ard0 23:30, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Like ... writing an article. If you don't have a whole article in you, contributing to or editing an article about something you're interested in. Reverting vandalism (I don't have any of the special vandal-fighting tools, but I have a few hundred articles on my watchlist that I can keep an eye on). Reporting persistent vandals to WP:AIV for blocking. Commenting on nominations on the articles for deletion page, WP:AFD (that's where articles go whose notability or suitability is in question, and you can comment without taking the whole burden on yourself). There's lots of things to do around here, but I think those are a few that might interest you. Regards, Newyorkbrad 23:38, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

how did you find my page about bryan popkin so fast?

I imagine that you were concerned about this article's having been created some months ago and redirected it to your userpage lest such creation should happen once more or in order that editors who know you IRL might best quickly find your userpage. Whilst either impulse is surely understandable, neither overcomes our general disfavoring of cross-namespace redirects (that is, redirects that point from a page in one namespace to a page in another [here, from one in mainspace to one in userspace]), and so I have tagged the shibley page as {{db-rediruser}} (for speedy deletion as R2). If there's some reason for this cross-namespace redirect that I've missed, you should, of course, feel free to use the {{hangon}} tag, and you should, in any event, feel free to drop me a line at my talk page should you have any questions. :) Joe 07:26, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Windows XP Logo.png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Windows XP Logo.png. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Peter O. (Talk) 16:05, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Calgary Science School IP[edit]

Well... there is an option for administators to disable/enable blocking anonymous users only and account creation, however, there are still bugs in that system. I've tried to edit with both parameters checked, but could only do so when anons were blocked, and account creation opened. Another user couldn't edit at all with it blocked, so it seems to really depend. In any case, that IP is now unblocked to my knowledge, so you should be fine. —Pilotguy (push to talk) 21:10, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article List of people by name: Arden, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:List of people by name: Arden. You may remove the deletion notice, and the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. Jerzyt 15:19, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Huh! that boilerplate is utterly inappropriate. That page will be AfD'd and deleted with extreme prejudice if the Prod fails, for vanity and clueless relationship to the rest of the structure it purports to be part of. No doubt you're doing valuable work here, but that was not part of it.
--Jerzyt 15:31, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What?? What's a boilerplate?? I'm not extremely wiki-experienced.. Sorry about creating that page.. Could you explain further please? Ard0 04:05, 13 December 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Hello,

Thank you for your stub submission. You may wish to note that it is preferable to use a stub template from Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types instead of using simply {{stub}}, if you can.

Thanks! --Vox Causa 02:02, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe I should read up on those templates, as I'm not too familiar with them. Hence the reason why I just used stub. Sorry, Ard0 04:45, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Editor Review[edit]

I don't apply the speedy tag as blatantly as you say I do, there are alot of pages I leave alone and let someone else deal with, due to my lack of memorization of all the templates for speedy. I've been yelled at about three or four times for my tag on Alexander Litvinenko, no need to yell at me about that, thank you. Could you please write some more on my editor review, with some more constructive comments. I can't learn when all people focus on is my mistakes. Thanks, Ard0 04:57, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

  • You are getting very defensive, and I don't appreciate that very much. You should have been talked to about the Litvinenko article, and there were MANY other ones that you were talked to about - despite this, you continued to apply speedy-deletion tags erroneously. I am not going to add anything else - I feel that you are frustrated because I have indicated an area that you need growth in, and it is my belief that you are not really ready to be an administrator, because of a variety of issues - one being your lack of familiarity with speedy delete policy, another being your quickness to take offense, and the third being that you seem to want it a bit too much for me to be comfortable. My comment stands as it is. I will add that I have nothing against you personally, and that I am sure you are a good editor - but it is my belief that, if you want a high edit count, you should edit articles the old-fashioned way by adding content - not by deleting anything that you can't immediately recognize, without any research into the subject first. Tuviya 05:25, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also, I'm not 'yelling' at anyone. That attitude is another issue entirely. Best wishes, Tuviya 05:26, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Many pages I delete are unsalvageable junk of the "bill is a poophead" type or vandalism. I do give warnings (eg about giving sources) if appropriate, but advertising is liable to speedy deletion. It's difficult to see why the responsibility for meeting the criteria is down to me rather than the poster.

OK, the text follows, try again (I've not protected against recreation), but remember that articles like this must not be written like advertisements. As for the five minutes, the assumption is surely that editors save text when they are happy with the content? MERRY CHRISTMAS Jimfbleak.talk.07:59, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maple Skate is a Dutch speed skate and tool manufacturing company. Numerous amounts of competitions have been won on maple skates and blades, including all of the olympic gold medals in Torino. Founded in 1990, the company has become a worldwide standard for klap and fixed skates.

Products[edit]

Maple Skate manufactures short and long track ice skates, inline dry skates, blade benders, sharpeners, de-burr tools, backpacks, helmets, covers, and laces. Many high profile speed skaters endorse Maple, including Cindy Klassen.

I've just seen your other message, fair point, my apologies. You need to make sure you give sources for your article, also, as it stands, it's basicly a eulogy to the company, bound to read like an adv. Jimfbleak.talk.08:04, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your understanding, I'll find some more info on Maple, write the article in word or something, then put it up. Could you maybe give me a hand once it's up, to expand it a bit?? Or just let me know of some way I can request it be expanded? Thanks again, Ard0 18:36, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
