Couple questions

Firstly, I've been going over some more minor composer articles, mostly using Grove Online for a reference. Should I put a Grove Online reference, and delete older Grove 1980 reference, or have both, or just leave the old one?

Secondly, I've been thinking I might want to become an admin some time in the future. Any advice? Thanks, Makemi 23:20, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think I've got about 2000 in the article space (not quite sure, since I seem to end up making a lot of edits in the User_talk space because of vandals). But I think it won't be three months for about a week. I'm pretty close, though. It seems like the criteria for adminship have gotten a lot stiffer. I've looked at some older RfAs, and peoples' criteria was 2 months and 1000 edits. I think the only annoying editing disagreement I've gotten into was that Chopin guy who's constantly trying to add the false date in the intro, but I think that's a pretty clear case of a troll. Thanks for the vote of confidence :) I'll wait a bit for adminship, and let you know when I've solidly hit the milestones. Happy editing! Makemi 23:39, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

We're working on fixing it's one big issue right now, no auto warnings, we're going to give something like

Your recent edit was automatically detected to be vandalism. If you continue to vandalize, you will be blocked. If you feel you have recieved this notice in error, please contact contact us at Tawkerbot2's talk page.

Ok, we set it in "angry mode" which overrides its one revert rule on the communism vandal so it should auto revert every time (within 10s I think).

Do you think the warning message is ok or should we toughen it up a little? -- Tawker 03:54, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just rv 2x new vandalism for this recently reinstated user that you had previously blocked. Thought I would let you know it has done little to curb his ways. -- Mike 02:03, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Well when I went to his page, i was surprised that no one had mentioned the initial rejection (some of which he never recovered from). But to make sure that it really was common knoweledge, I checked my mom's Volume Library. (1987) Sure enough there it was. The church of which we was a member of during his adult life was very orthodox and oftin outragious. Today is my first day, so I hope I didn't do something wrong. I'll ask my piano instructor come Friday. The preceding unsigned comment was added by The Blitzball Monster (talk • contribs) .

Thanks for the Barnstar!

I really appreciate the recognition. It's been a lot of work at times, but thankfully I've had a lot of help from fellow Wikipedians in handling the problem. Thanks again, OhNoitsJamieTalk 04:27, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Cornelis Verdonck, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Trobairitz

Thanks a lot. I'm actually contemplating getting it to FA status, but I'm waiting for a couple books to show up before I really know whether there's enough to say, etc. There's a lot of debate about attribution, and Dronke (in 1984) talks about the historic habit of attributing the work of women to men (as in the tradition of giving tons of credit to Hildegard's male secretaries). It looks like the first real work on these women was in the eighties, although they were separated out in some early (although not contemporary) chansonniers. Again, thanks. Charles Ives FARC

The article Charles Ives has been listed on Wikipedia:Featured article removal candidates (Wikipedia:Featured article removal candidates/Charles Ives), by me, as it has no inline citations and thus does not meet the featured article criteria at Wikipedia:What is a featured article?: "A featured article has the following attributes" 2.b. "'factually accurate' includes the supporting of facts with specific evidence and external citations...these include a "References" section where the references are set out, complemented where appropriate by inline citations."

I'm writing you because you contributed to the article. If you did the latter you may be able to add inline citations where appropriate much easier than someone unaquainted with the sources used. I thought you might be interested in the FARC or in saving the article from FAR by adding citations. Thanks. Hyacinth 11:47, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've just created this article, and noticed that everywhere within wikipedia this and seconda pratica are spelled with 2 T's. Grove Online has 1 T, Grout 6th ed. (yeah, I know, It's what I have) has 2 T's in the index and one T in the actual text, and Weiss Taruskin source documents has 2 T's, but it's a bit older. I'm tempted to go about linking prima pratica and Stile antico, and at the same time standardizing the spelling to "prima pratica" and "seconda pratica". Thoughts? Opinions? I'd put it on an article talk page, but I don't know what article people would be watching. Makemi 02:09, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, there's probably no "right" way to spell it, but is it better to leave the spelling as-is and just link it, letting it redirect, or is it better for me to change the spelling since I'm going to be editing anyway? Makemi 02:26, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks.

3RR Violation

How's it going? I'm writing to you because you I see that you are an administrator who takes quick action ie you got rid of a vandal at one of the pages I edit. However there is another vandal at the Joseph Sobran page. Here's the significant info for you:

  1. cur) (last) 07:24, 21 March 2006 DJac75 (rv)
  2. (cur) (last) 07:17, 21 March 2006 DJac75 (rv. POV vandalism)

More of the bad news:

  2. (cur) (last) 06:07, 20 March 2006 DJac75 (rv)

  6. (cur) (last) 03:03, 17 March 2006 DJac75 (His Wanderer articles appear on his website--is this an actual controversy?)
  7. (cur) (last) 03:00, 17 March 2006 DJac75

  10. (cur) (last) 01:22, 17 March 2006 DJac75 m

Yes, the Joseph Sobran page is a controversial article....but there can be no order when people violate 3RR. It doesn't allow the "community" to express it's point of view in balance with each other. Anyway, I've tried to find someone to take a look at this to no avail. Hope you can take care of it.

Thanks

I saw your commented-out note asking people not to add any births for people who didn't already have a wikipedia article, and got all nostalgic. When I started here in early 2003, finding red-link people in day articles, which were littered with them when such articles existed at all, was one of the major ways I discovered new articles that needed to be created - it was a sure-fire way to find something that needed to be done, when I had 10 minutes for a bit of wiki-ing. Sound files

Wanna check out if you think these sound files would add anything to their intended articles? They're recorded live, so they might not be high enough quality. For Buxtehude, for Hildegard of Bingen, for Campion, for Etienne Moulnié and/or air de cour, for Cantigas de Santa Maria, and for Leonin/Perotin. They're all pretty big, especially "Wo ist doch", so careful. Thanks, Makemi 22:30, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Administrative duties

Ok, so I've been double checking the Speedy deletion criterion, and I'm a little mystified as to why I can't speedy delete images such as Image:Bonk to the Future.jpg, which was uploaded only for use in a really dumb vanity page, which was speedily deleted (by me once, and Francs 2000 twice). Is it because they can't be undeleted.Cheers, Makemi 21:52, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What's your understanding of "vandal" images? Just curious. Ivan Shokoloff seems plausible to me. Frankly I don't know much about minor twentieth century Russian composers, but a number of things make sense, which I wouldn't necessarily expect from a hoax. Firstly, the whole Russia to Cuba thing is logical, the time period is right for twelve-tone music and influencing Milton Babbitt (although I'd definitely want a better source on that). And that whole thing about being a better plumber than composer makes sense for the USSR, since I'm pretty sure they decided who worked at what. I wouldn't be that surprised if the current Grove didn't include this guy, as he seems pretty non-notable, but probably not to the extent that he's deletable. If I knew cyrillic I'd check the Russian wikipedia, but I don't. Cheers, Makemi 23:01, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

A tool for leaving warning messages

Hi. I noticed that you actively revert vandalism to articles. Thanks!! I also noticed that in at least one case (Henry VIII of England) you didn't leave a warning message on the vandal's talk page. I think it's important to leave messages in almost every instance of even the most minor inappropriate edits for for several reasons.

But leaving lots of messages can be tedious, even with the templates documented at Wikipedia:Vandalism. So I've made some vandal-warning tools that are explained at User:Kbh3rd/Vandal_warning_toolbox. A list of warnings can be added to that toolbox menu on the left whenever a user talk page is being edited so that the proper warning message is only a click away. You might like to try it out.

Thanks again for your help! --Kbh3rdtalk 04:27, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the kind words about my work. I figured we would cross paths eventually... and indeed I would be interested in a meetup. I have already signed up. Why don't we give Angela the option of where to meet? (If she's on campus all weekend, she may want a change of scenery, or if she's tired, maybe she'll want to meet somewhere near her hotel--just a thought.) Then the local participants can decide from there. I'm open to any of the suggestions on the meetup page, although being on a student's budget, the cheaper the better as far as I'm concerned. Looking forward to it, --Rockero 01:30, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I'm glad you'll be able to attend the meetup. I don't mind what time of day. I'll probably be jet-lagged anyway since I'm coming from Australia. :) I'm staying on Cabrillo Blvd, CA 93101, so something easily findable from there would be good. Angela. 03:50, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome, Angela. I hope that some can participate, though I cannot. Cheers, -Will Beback 08:57, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help. If I may, two more images need speedy: Image:Harry Potter - danr.jpg and Image:Harry Potter - Harry Potter - danr.jpg

You're welcome--I just deleted another one of those. The only reason I didn't speedy the last one is that it has been placed on IFD; it seems that there is a loophole in deletion policy (unless I'm missing something) where I can't speedy the last copy of an image, even if it was used only for vandalism. CSD G3 seems to cover it. They should all be gone now. Antandrus (talk) 19:43, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for banning 38.119.107.82. They were being a real pain.Penarestel 20:27, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
you're welcome.... sometimes they just keep it up until you block them, it's all you can do. Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 20:25, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Matt Leinart Vandal

As a heads up, I put in a checkuser request to affirm it's one user. Of course, do not comment my submission on its page. T K E 00:46, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The vandal has been confirmed by Bureaucrat Essjay as a lone vandal. T K E 05:57, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A Void

I just saw your addition to my talk: many thanks for your kind words. You did spot that it wasn't just my contribution's summary that was lipogrammatic, didn't you?! It's a pity that A Void's story is not worthy of high acclaim, not to say disappointing; I think it must gradually dawn on any individual slogging through it that its main claim to notability is its author's adroit, not to say cunning, navigation around his constraint, and not his plot construction! As you rightly said to Kat, "Oof"! This is not to gainsay that its author's (and translator's) virtuosity brings its own satisfactions. And writing lipogrammatically, if it is apt, is, I found, a fairly good form of brain-workout! --Sock1 (or is that 2?)talk

A little detective work

Hi Antandrus!

I wonder if you could do a little detective work for me...at your convenience, could you find out whether User:71.139.197.127 and User:71.141.34.204 and User:71.139.169.121 are all related to each other? Edits from this IP range seem to be coming from the same user, and I suspect it is a roaming IP of some sort. Let me know if you find anything interesting! --HappyCamper 23:46, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is there an IP range block that would be effective? Do we know whether there are legitimate users on the same range? --HappyCamper 00:35, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, okay. Never a dull moment on Wikipedia - that vandal is new to me. --HappyCamper 00:42, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Happy First-Edit Day

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.
