One of your scripts seems to have stopped working

Hi Anomie. The script that I've used countless times, AjaxPreview, seems to have stopped working recently. I've been getting this in the console. Are you still maintaining it?

POTD protected templates

So I'm in the process of doing a cleanup of unused templates. There are a couple of thousand POTD templates (see here) that are unused. Can you help me understand the purpose of creating a separate "protected" version of the template? For example {{POTD protected/2018-01-02}} and {{POTD/2018-01-02}} are basically the same. I saw that your bot is creating the duplicates so I wanted to check with you. Thanks! @Zackmann08: As I mentioned at Special:Diff/885253438/885257167, as far as I know they exist so the Main Page cascading protection doesn't protect the general-use daily POTD templates and their subtemplates. Link classifier question

Zotero

Hi Anomie. I've been using Zotero for research for a while and have just been exploring the generation of citations directly from it. I've set the Preferences>Export>Default Format to be "Wikipedia Citation Templates" and it has been generating {{cite book}} and friends happily. Quite often though I am working on pages where the WP:CITEVAR uses {{citation}} which Zotero doesn't seem able to generate. Being a lazy old programmer I tend to expect computers to run around deciding on defaults and linkage, so prefer the latter method accordingly. Do you know if there is an easy way to make Zotero use {{citation}}? Not a major problem, most of the time it's only half-a-dozen keystrokes to change style (told you I was lazy). @Tony1: Mostly the issue is that {{row indexer|<nowiki>...</nowiki>}} is conceptually broken rather than your script. But the script itself could be improved by including dates when it adds {{Primary source inline}}, and could avoid adding it to a reference where the template is already there (as in two places in Special:Diff/890235565). About your offer

Hi Anomie. In your own time, I'd like to take you up on your offer to run AnomieBOT III against those old IP blocks, if the offer's still open. The consensus is unanimous so I wouldn't have thought there'd be any Bot approval issues, but you'd know more about that than me. There's a couple of quarry queries available from that discussion. It could work on other Wikipedias, but if you wanted it as a gadget it would have to be added as one. As for changing the numbers, you'd have to edit the code in the makeUnsignedTemplate function. Anomie⚔ 00:50, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

Question about recent database change

Hi Anomie, I saw on the phabricator ticket that you're the author of the recently implemented change to the database. It may be unrelated, but WugBot stopped working on June 4th and I can't seem to find a reason why. I had looked into the ticket prior to the changes, but thought they wouldn't affect the bot since I read the live revision, not querying the database. There are so many ways because over the years people have thought various alternative names would be useful. The date is for sorting into subcategories of Category:Articles with unsourced statements, so people wishing to work on the backlog can start with the newest or oldest articles I suppose. Feel free to use whichever redirect you prefer, and feel free to allow the bot to add the date if you'd like. Or, in most cases, you can use {{subst:cn}} to automatically produce the full "{{Citation needed|date=June 2019}}". Anomie⚔ 01:42, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

useridentifier: Uncaught TypeError

Hi Anomie. Your useridentifier script gives Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'defaultValue' of null on Special:Log. I think 'mw-log-user' in var u=['',document.getElementById('mw-log-user').defaultValue]; needs to be changed to 'mw-input-user'. @Headbomb: The "as if it were a different user" bit isn't entirely accurate, since it implies that the "bot" is still logged in to its own account and OAuth is working like some sort of sudo. As used there, "OAbot" is not terribly different from an edit like Special:Diff/902822949 where you used AWB. The fact that the tool also runs on its own as User:OAbot seems somewhat confusing. Anomie⚔ 13:24, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

May I ask you to look at one of my edits, please?

In Causes of the Holodomor, Consequence of collectivization an editor added a {whom} in a slightly odd place, while there is an appropriate ref at the end of a not very long sentence. Your bot quite appropriately added a date to the {whom}, which is a neat feature, thank you.

The editor also commented "This is written like some Marxist historian's opinion. please name him."

I looked at the ref and discovered that it was all in Ukrainian -- even though it is similar to Russian there are some differences -- but I could make it out well enough. So I translated the author etc, checked with Google to make sure, and then for fun ran the archived PDF through Google, and it did a pretty good job. (It's horrible at French, a bit of a joke, in fact.)

The author of the ref actually took quite a critical view, far from a Marxist one, not surprising given that he is a Ukrainian historian,

So I ended up with a somewhat odd looking ref and because you are such an experienced editor, and also run bots, I wondered if you might take a quick look, it is just one reference.

@Peter NYC: Personally I'd have used one of the citation templates such as {{cite web}}. Those templates have parameters for handling translated titles and such. As for the citation itself, there's probably no need to link to Google Translate (people can do that themselves if they need to) and I'd think MOS:CQ and MOS:LQUOTE would still apply to the “революції зверху,” bit. You might ask for more advice at an appropriate noticeboard, perhaps WP:Village pump (miscellaneous) or WT:Citing sources. Anomie⚔ 10:52, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
Thank you very much for having a look! I didn't write the piece, or the original ref, so I missed the quotation marks and punctuation when I did the translation; fixed those. Normally I would have used a cite template but got a bit confused, and will have another close look at the documentation to see how to deal with this.
The reason I linked to the Google translation was that at the web archive you can't just right-click and get a translation, all it does is translate the English header. So people have to know that they can copy the URL from the web archive and stick it into Google Translate, and from my experience that's not something many people know. As you suggested, I'll take this to the Village pump.

AnomieBot III

Hello, Anomie,

I check AnomieBot III's user page for broken redirects on user pages that the bot does not take care of. But that page seems to have changed in the last day or so. It use to have lists of broken redirects that needed to be taken care of but now, hardly anything appears. Since it seems pretty consistent that there are always some broken redirects that need attention, it's odd to see no list at all. Go into the page history from a few days ago & you can see how much it's changed.

Any idea what the problem is? It's just part of my regular routine to check this page (which I can't link to from a phone) and I wondered why things had suddenly changed. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 03:47, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

Perhaps people stopped creating broken redirects for the recent US holiday? Or, more likely, it looks like the database replicas are having significant lag which will affect the BrokenRedirectDeleter task's ability to find broken redirects. When the lag was rising the bot would likely not have been seeing any new redirects, and now as the lag seems to be falling again it may still be seeing redirects that humans have manually fixed.
