Happy Adminship Anniversary Day[edit]

Happy Adminship from the Birthday Committee

Wishing Andonic/Archive 27 a very happy adminship anniversary on behalf of the Wikipedia Birthday Committee!

-- Ramesh Ramaiah talk 02:15, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey![edit]

Long time, no see. I've got a solo FAC running and was reminiscing about the glorious days of 6-way FA noms. Good times! It's nice to see you're still around, at least sometimes. Keilana|Parlez ici 20:09, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I never really expected to be back, it just sort of happened and now I've got all kinds of projects! :) It's great to hear from you too. We should do a collab sometime. So, how have you been? Keilana|Parlez ici 22:46, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Replied via email, let's move the conversation there? Keilana|Parlez ici 23:15, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andonic,

A few other editors and I are involved in a discussion at Talk:Latvian mythology#Latvian mythology or Baltic mythology? about whetherLatvian mythology (and, by extension, other Baltic mythology articles like Lithuanian mythology) are deserving of their own articles or whether they should be merged into Baltic mythology, which should be written to explain the similarities and differences between them?

You seem to be involved with WP:Wikiproject Mythology and your knowledge of writing mythology articles could be a great help in our discussion.

Kind regards, Matt (talk) 21:58, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Matt, just so you know, Andonic is pretty much inactive. (However, he still owes me an email...)Keilana|Parlez ici 22:58, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, as Keilana so kindly pointed out, I'm pretty much out of the picture by this point, sorry to disappoint. Regarding your predicament though, in a nutshell my opinion regarding whether prospective articles should be creative is, if someone's willing to write it, might as well give it a chance. Worst case scenario you can just merge the new content back later. It's a fluid encyclopedia, plenty of room for experimentation and growth. (@Keilana: I will dig it out of the lost forgotten depths of my inbox and reply later today haha). · Andonic contact 23:28, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
For someone "out of the picture", that was damn fast. Looking forward to your email! Keilana|Parlez ici 23:32, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification, guys. Before messaging Andonic, I checked his contributions and saw that his last edit was 5 July 2012, so I figured that he edited recently enough to at least give the discussion a quick look. Thanks for getting back to me, though. Kind regards, Matt (talk) 23:53, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:RaFCaw-boxart.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:RaFCaw-boxart.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:31, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Protection[edit]

Hi Andonic, I'm kind of familiar with Wikipedia, but not super familiar with the way it works editing wise. I'm trying to get protected or semi-protected the articles for Joe Garcia and David Rivera. The two are in a tough congressional race in South Florida and there seems to be an increasingly frequent amount of vandalism on the former and deletion of unsavoury content for the latter. I think it would do both the articles well if they remained protected or semi-protected until a few days after the election November 6th. Digitall565 (talk) 04:46, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

BLOCKED again?[edit]

Edit Request[edit]

Talk:Bitcoin Thanks. -Bitcoin (talk) 10:06, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey[edit]

yeah, I still edit from time to time. Enigmamsg 19:43, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP:RFUP suggested that I bring this here first, but full-protection may no longer be needed at the Bitcoin article. The page was protected due to a dispute between several editors, but it turns out that all of the editors on one "side" of the various disputes are all confirmed sockpuppets of HowardStrong, and the ~10 accounts have been blocked. Given that the "dispute" was a major sockpuppetry issue that is now resolved, I think changing the article's status to semi-protection might be good so that the editors that have discussed changes on the talk page can implement them. I wouldn't object to you disagreeing as an uninvolved administrator, I just wanted to inform you of the situation. - SudoGhost 05:03, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Judging from Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/HowardStrong#08 November 2012, it may be too soon to lift the protection. EdJohnston (talk) 16:51, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Given that the page has been fully protected for a month and half (and that semi protection is working on the talk page) how would you feel about dropping the protection on Bitcoin down to a semi? Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 12:55, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll post on the articles talk page to see if others chime in. I have no problem with unprotecting personally, it's been a while. · Andonic contact 13:21, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thoughts on a Category?[edit]

[1] Should it exist? Enigmamsg 23:42, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't create it. I just came across it. There's no real definition so I don't understand the category or how one would justify adding it to pages. Just because someone has lived in multiple countries? Perpetual traveler would mean to me that they're moving around several times a year, and that's not going to be documented, most likely. Dota 2 protection status[edit]

I was wondering, when do you intend to restore the indefinite semi-protection status to Dota 2? While I want to make sure that the page is comprehensive, I also don't want to have it suddenly destabilized by I.P. addresses adding in game guide content or linking up action real-time strategy, prompting the reviewer to get the incorrect impression that it has been unstable all along. I just wanted to say that you've been fantastic thus far with your review and I find it amazing how the implementation of your ideas has caused the article to be systematically rebooted. Keep up the good work! ;) DarthBotto talkcont 22:01, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
An outsider posted on the GA nomination page, wondering if the article is still being reviewed. I pointed out, however, what you said and that you're pretty busy. You're still alive, right? :P DarthBotto talkcont 05:06, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

At the bottom of the Dota 2 talk page, a brand new contributor stated that they think the page needs more images, videos and sounds. Now, I personally don't think any of those assets would really help, but what do you think, considering that you're reviewing? DarthBotto talkcont 21:10, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dota 2 review[edit]

I figured I'd start a new thread on your page, so we can communicate strictly for the GAN.

Now, I took the liberty of marking your pointers that are unquestionably fixed as complete. The ones I did not mark as complete are the ones that I feel are at your discretion for assessing, as they can be considered otherwise subjective. DarthBotto talkcont 22:42, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it would be a good idea to continue with the GAN and see if we can get this thing done! We've done so well thus far, I'd like to get that momentum back! DarthBotto talkcont 21:43, 30 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You may have bitten off more than you could chew, but whenever we have worked together on this page, we have been very successful, so don't feel impotent, because we will finish it and it will be ready for Good Article status, if not close to Featured Article status. I too am busy with studies and projects- in fact, I have two research papers due this week, as well as two films in production. But, we'll get this done! ;) DarthBotto talkcont 20:13, 4 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have implemented your suggestions to the best of my ability! DARTHBOTTO talkcont 21:19, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm having trouble finding an reliable references that state, contrary to the references in the article, that Valve makes money via the Steam subscribers Dota 2 attracts. On another note, I'm not exactly sure what to put in the proposed beta section, which is a problem on my end. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 05:29, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for being so diligent with your review. We've done something that is very beneficial to the community and Dota franchise. :) DARTHBOTTO talkcont 20:23, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Imperial Walker.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. -- ТимофейЛееСуда. 20:35, 9 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

John Huppenthal[edit]

You protected John Huppenthal, apparently based on claims made at Reddit. Check the article history -- the edits cited on Reddit were from about 4 years ago. There is no current evidence of COI editing, and there's only been one IP edit in the last 6 months or so. Beyond this, you protected the article on the day after Huppenthal's successor was sworn in. There's now zero chance of the "Politician's office likely editing the page," since the politician is no longer in office.

Given this background, it would make sense to revert your protection edit. Thanks. Fearofreprisal (talk) 04:10, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection[edit]

Hello, Andonic. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers[edit]

Hi Andonic.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:46, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open![edit]

Proposed deletion of Escapa[edit]

The article Escapa has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Apparently some sort of amateur web game? Lacks significant coverage from reliable, independent sources. (?) It had no meaningful hits in a video game reliable sources custom Google search. There are no worthwhile redirect targets.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. czar 04:50, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Escapa.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Escapa.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to [email protected], stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to [email protected].

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. czar 04:51, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Harmonizers Pitt.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Harmonizers Pitt.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Train2104 (t • c) 23:48, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

MfD nomination of Portal:Strategy games[edit]

Portal:Strategy games, a page which you created or substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; you may participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Strategy games and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Portal:Strategy games during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Guilherme Burn (talk) 12:31, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Strategy games portal requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! File permission problem with File:IR.Kurdistan cropped.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:IR.Kurdistan cropped.jpg.

If you take this step, add {{permission pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Notice

The file File:Liberty-statue-with-manhattan-1-(cropped).jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unused, low quality. Superseded by files at c:Category:Right side views of the Statue of Liberty.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 05:52, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you and the whole team today for the article, introduced (in 2008!): "This is the second Tzatziki Squad collaboration up for your scrutiny." - A timely contribution! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:19, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wow blast from the past haha. Thanks! Wish I still had time to do stuff like that. All the best in the new year! :) Andonic contact 11:58, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Precious[edit]

blast from the past

Thank you for contributions to quality articles such as history of timekeeping devices and Dota 2, for service from 2006 saying "blast from the past" in 2012 already, for running the Tzatziki Squad, for supporting future admins, for a clean user page not about yourself, - repeating (3 February 2009): you are an awesome Wikipedian!

Your signature and linter errors[edit]

Just a reminder that your signature contains obsolete font tags. They create Linter errors, and it is advised that you change your signature to [[User:Andonic|<span style="font-family:Times New Roman;color:Black;">'''A'''ndonic</span>]] [[User talk:Andonic|'''contact''']] ASAP.

The purpose of this message is because Linter errors affect the way the page looks, and with a lot of errors, the page may render badly. To reduce Linter errors, please change your signature.

If the software doesn't accept my replacement signature, let me know, and if that's the case, unfortunately you may have to change it to something else. Sheep (talk) 11:15, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
