Colin Franklin article[edit]

Hi and thanks for your question on the help desk.

The personal details about Mr Franklin were removed - however this was because they were not sourced. On wikipedia, the guidance on what does and does not go into the biographical entries of living people is given at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons and specifically Privace of names and A Note on marital Status.

The basic rules are that if the information is available on reliable sources, and cited correctly, they can be included.

As a work colleague, I would think that you have two ways in which Mr Franklin's disapproval can be made:

  • If Mr Franklin has access to an official e-mail address (e.g. at an educational establishment), then he could e-mail his disapproval himself
  • If you are a work colleague, he might be able to do it via you through your official e-mail address.

The contact details for the Wikimedia Foundation (which covers Wikipedia) can be found at Wikimedia Foundation - Contact Us.

As I say, I don't know if Mr Franklin can prevent the items he objects to being included, but that would be the place to contact about it.

A reminder - the e-mail would need to come from an official address - such as one from a government agency (e.g. for the Office of the Auditor General of Canada, this would be [email protected]) or educational establishment.

If you have any other questions, I can be contacted via my Talk page (shown on my signature following this message). PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 16:39, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comment on my talk page. I think the ieee.org e-mail address would be perfect. However, I should point out that although it might be possible to remove personal information, such as marriage, wife and children, it would not be possible to remove the entire article. Any inaccuracies could be dealt with (as long as their is sufficient citations for it), but as a very notable individual, the article would be very unlikely to be removed in its entirety. Unless Mr Franklin intends on removing his career details from the Comms Hall of Fame and the IEEEE websites (which are the main citation sources), plus any information in publicly available books, etc, the information is out there - and there is no real reason to remove it from Wikipedia. I assume that Mr Franklin would have no objection to being listed in a book encyclopedia?
I understand that some people may feel that there is a chance that untrue/inaccurate information may be listed in Wikipedia - however, to be honest, the checks and balances generally work - if such information is put into wikipedia, it would quickly be removed by someone watching the article (as I do, now that I've started being interested in it!)
As I said above, Mr Franklin can contact the WikiMedia Foundation - this would be the preferred contact, as the e-mail address can be verified with IEEE themselves! However, I would guess (and this is a guess - I am not an Administrator) that the only things that would be likely to be removed would be any personal details such as marriage, wife's names, children's names (but I'd prevent those from appearing anyway, as from what I can see, these details have no reliable sources, and none of those individuals are notable in their own right) or inaccuracies - but reliable sources to back up the correct details would be required. The inclusion in Wikipedia is the downside of being a world-reknown person!
By all means, contact the WikiMedia Foundation using the details I gave above - and let me know if there is anything else I can help you with (and/or how Mr Franklin gets on!)
Please give my best wishes to Mr Franklin, and my hopes that he can come up with a solution which he is happy with. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 15:28, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You indicated (in your response to PhantomSteve) that you would contact Dr Franklin so he can formalize his concerns. I trust you will review the current version of the article before talking to him. I took on the responsibility of reviewing the article for accuracy. As an aside, Dr. Franklin is quite an impressive guy. I realize some of the personal information was already removed, perhaps by you, but there is no guarantee it won't be put back. I have a disagree with the official position of Wikipedia regarding personal information, and may take that up at some time. Regarding the other information, I either found a source for the information and added a citation, or moved the questionable material temporarily to the talk page. Please look at the talk page to see the details. My plan is to leave those items on the talk page for some time, until someone can confirm one way or the other whether they are verifiable. You are probably in a position to help. If they cannot be verified, I plan to take them down from the talk page.
For the remaining items in the bio, you might find some you still think are wrong. If I've misread a citation, or there is reason to think the citation isn't reliable, please let me know and we can fix it. Feel free to contact PhantomSteve (who knows more about the inner workings of Wikipedia than I do) or myself (who spent more time looking at sources) or both if you have any quesitions.--SPhilbrickT 16:18, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
