Images in inboxes[edit]

Thank you for your contributions! I wanted to let you know when adding images to infoboxes you only need the filename, not the whole File: template. See WP:IBI for more details. Thanks. -Kj cheetham (talk) 18:42, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi An ocean liner fan234, let me know if you need assistance with this. -Kj cheetham (talk) 10:11, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There’s something I might need your help with two ships I am trying to get images for are RMS Alaunia 1925 and SS Albania 1920 An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 12:32, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I only meant my help regarding technically inserting images into infoboxes on Wikipedia, rather than finding the images to start with I'm afraid. -Kj cheetham (talk) 13:26, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am having an issue where when I add an image into the Infobox it removes it An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 15:05, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Which specific article? -Kj cheetham (talk) 15:05, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well I was trying to add an image into the RMS Alaunia Infobox but the Infobox disappeared and it wasn’t the image being to big it was the same size as all of the others. An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 15:10, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
RMS Alaunia (1913) already has an image, so I assume you mean RMS Alaunia (1925)? The infobox code looks standard, so there should be any issues. The main thing is to just add the filename, not the whole File: template. I just added an image myself from Wikimedia commons, which is hopefully the one you tried. -Kj cheetham (talk) 15:17, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 15:34, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you aware you are still adding images to infoboxes incorrectly? e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=SS_Britannic_(1874)&diff=prev&oldid=1197385328 I am fixing them when I see them though. Thanks. -Kj cheetham (talk) 11:07, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh my bad An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 11:19, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a big deal. :) I just see them pop up on Category:Pages using infoboxes with thumbnail images. -Kj cheetham (talk) 11:24, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Where do I find the file name An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 03:53, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey I made a mistake when I was adding images to Infoboxs on the list of Cunard line ships in the 1918-1934 section I accidentally moved Tuscania to the side could you help put it below ss Alaunia 1925. An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 03:29, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Adding onto this topic. Like the first message here says, you don't have to put the full File: template in the infobox. You only need to put the image file name in it so it displays. Example-Ship image = RMS Titanic jpg is how you should do it, NOT Ship image = [ [File:RMS Titanic jpg|thumb|Blah Blah] ].

Thanks, Sudric (talk) 06:54, 2 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much I finally learned how to add them in correctly An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 08:38, 2 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Authorship[edit]

Hi, I see you are claiming authorship of the various photos you are uploading. Unless you are very old, I don't think that is likely. In the author field you should put { {unknown|author} }(remove spaces between brackets). For the source use the appropriate PD tag. Regards Murgatroyd49 (talk) 09:41, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello yes I am claiming authorship of photos but the reason why is because I don’t know who these photos belong to they old photos and it is very difficult to find out who published them. An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 09:59, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So you put unkown author. They are all obviously in the Public Domain so you need to add that information. Have a read of Public domain to get you started. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 10:09, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright thank you I promise to not make the same mistake again An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 10:29, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, it can be something of a minefield. Just for my own curiosity, where did you find the photos? Murgatroyd49 (talk) 10:31, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For the SS Belgic from 1885 I found that image on a post. For the finance sinking I just typed into goggle “ss finance Georgic collision”. For the delphic 1925 I found the image on a website called “ship nostalgia”. An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 11:06, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah right, I wondered if you'd aquired an old album from somewhere. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 11:08, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Say by any chance is there a way to change the author of the images I posted as my own work? An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 11:40, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you can edit the page, using the standard edit tab at the top of the page. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 11:42, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Under the section labelled int:license-header put PD-UK-Unknown between the double curly brackets, or PD-US-Unknown if you are in the States. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 11:53, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think I did it wrong cuz now it just says “view header” An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 01:32, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to add onto this in regards to your Runic 1889 photograph. The photograph in question comes from the National Museum of Liverpool. With, I think, the owner as Priestley and Sons. Please correct the information on it as soon as you can.
Thanks, Sudric (talk) 02:55, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Done An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 09:49, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I hope this doesn't come off as rude, but we did tell you so. It appears that all your photos have been deleted for this reason or something similar.

Asiatic[edit]

The image File:SS Asiatic.jpg is of the 1873 ship Asiatic stranded in Mossel Bay, South Africa, in April 1884. You have that part in the description. This is confirmed by other versions of the photo here and here.

The 1873 Asiatic was built at Whitehaven Ship Building Co, and was a ship of the Union Line. It never was a White Star ship. It changed names in 1888 and was scrapped in 1895. The first link above, and this shippingandshipbuilding.uk page, give that ship's history. I don't think we have an en-wiki article for that ship.

The White Star Asiatic was built in 1870/1871 and is described on this shippingandshipbuilding.uk page. It never went to Africa in its White Star service, and indeed had a different name by 1873, long before this photo. I'm not sure it even went to South Africa under that name; as Ambriz it seems it mainly went to West African ports. That ship wrecked in 1903.

So... that is why I removed the photo from the SS Asiatic (1870) article -- it's the wrong ship. My edit comment tried to explain this. Do you have better information that contradicts the above? If not, it should be removed again. What was the source for the image, and does it have better information there? The links above seem pretty detailed (even naming a ship in the background cropped out of your upload), that the ship aground was named Asiatic at the time, which could not be the 1870 ship. I have not been able to find an image of the 1870 ship.

BTW, it was a similar issue on the image you initially uploaded to SS Belgic (1873) -- multiple other sources (and visual comparison) showed it was actually of the SS Belgic (1885), despite the image description, so I moved the photo to that article. Carl Lindberg (talk) 13:28, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry my bad lots of people use that image of asiatic from 1870 An ocean liner fan234 (talk) 08:19, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

image boxes[edit]

Just so you know when putting ship images in fleet lists, you can remove the text box by going into advanced and changing the image frame type to frameless. LJKMagic (talk) 10:26, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
