an advice or help from user Guglani1?

I had an old account with name Guglani since perhaps 2005, but long back i forgot its password and email associated was closed. subsequently i registered as Guglani1 which is working well. Meanwhile my accouts at other wikis registered as Guglani were also working well.I never used Guglani at en.wiki after i registerd as Guglani1.Meanwhile accounts at other wikis as Guglani have been ticked by me as Global account without ticking at en.wiki.Now some people at wiki have attached my Guglani1 a/c with my old Guglani a/c ,i am happy with it.But can I request , that my global a/c on other wikis as Guglani can also be attached and in so doing I should not loose all the old editorial history on wiki projects for these two accounts although these are at different wikis.Confusion comes on some wikis like en.wikibooks where i get user id as Guglani and Guglani1 both , how to sort out this cofusion.--Guglani1 (talk) 12:45, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

IPA fonts

Since the discussion at MediaWiki_talk:Common.css#IPA_font is a bit old, I didn't know if I'd get an answer there. When you say Gentium is supported by WP, did you mean Gentium Plus, or the original font? And can you point me to where it's supported? This is all new to me.

Also asked you what you meant at Help_talk:IPA#IPA_font.

I realized that Gentium as it is is too huge - hundreds of kilobytes. That's not great for a webfont that should be quickly downloadable. I'll probably add SIL's subset for IPA, although I'll have to research that. I'll update you. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 15:41, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link fixing one-day contest

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. Purification Rundown

Hello. I'm confused about your recent edits to Purification Rundown. You added a few 'not in citation' templates to sources, but a quick check shows that the info is indeed in the sources attached. Was this a mistake? Grayfell (talk) 22:21, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

I don't think that it was a mistake. I didn't see a clear indication in the source of the asserted facts.

This edit marks in this way an article about the death of a man from Oregon, but I couldn't find a man from Oregon mentioned in the linked articles.

This edit marks in this way a statement that asserts that Kelly Preston "endorsed the program and credits it for helping her late son Jett". In one of the linked articles I couldn't find anything at all about the Purification Rundown, and in another one it is mentioned in passing and not as the article says.

How is that a personal attack in any sense of the term? It was an accurate statement; you do need to read WP:Vandalism, because nothing I did was vandalism. I put no emphasis on the someone whatsoever, so that's a deliberate misrepresentation right there. Ironically, false accusations of vandalism are often classified as personal attacks, as are deliberate misrepresentations... You edit-warred on the page with me, but the utterly inappropriate thing is your edit-warring on my talkpage. WP:IDONTLIKEIT is an essay related to deletion discussions, so is irrelevant. I note you have a history of this sort of activity as well - which you've been blocked for as well. And still you don't learn. I get the feeling WP:CIR is a useful read for you as well. Nope, this is another extension which has been locally translated. Is it possible to develop a transliteration tool for all languages like content translation tool? Hmm, I think that you are confusing several things.

Transliteration is something that is done in the UniversalLanguageSelector extension (ULS). It includes a transliteration tool for Urdu, although I haven't heard a lot of feedback about how it works from Urdu speakers. This is the little keyboard icon that appears near the input boxes.

ContentTranslation is a tool for translating Wikipedia articles. It's completely new, and it's not deployed anywhere yet. It's similar to translatewiki, but targeted specifically for articles rather than translating software.

The extension that you are describing - "send emials to users when changes and edits take places in their talk pages and watchlist" - that is definitely Echo. I see that only four messages of this extension are translated locally in ur.wikipedia. All of them should be translated in translatewiki. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 18:16, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Basically this tool has been developed for urdu wiki, but I am not a professional programmer and have only basic knowledge about it. Proposed deletion of Brian Vala Nahed

Hello there, It seems to me the subject of the article is actively involved in writing and editing the article and has turned it into a personal résumé. Even the Wikipedia's automated service has picked up on that, "Grig8wan9rat7ok4 (talk • contribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic". When I removed the second paragraph of the main article (on Behrouz "Brian" Vala Nahed) for being laughably promotional, it was quickly reverted. Even on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brian Vala Nahed's page, the user "Grig8wan9rat7ok4" removed/edited the comments that he did not like, so I clicked on "View history" in order to undo his edits, but was unable to do so, as it asked for it to be done "manually". The consensus seems to be that the article should be deleted for good. As an administrator, you have the authority to remove it. Thank you for your assistance. Could you assist?

I moved :ru:File:Filatov_A.V.jpg to commons (as it got uploaded to en-wiki, and we only need one copy) - easy part. Adding {{now commons}} to the Russian page has not worked as I thought it would - any change you could fix the template - other foreign language wikis do understand the {{now commons}} template - but the editing system on ru is rather odd, so not sure if I've put in correctly. [1] has been reverted, can you describe how it fixed white spaces? Remember, you are not really encouraged to make edits that have no effect on the content or body of the article. Lontara

Hi Amire80

I saw a message about Boeginees Lontara script at your translatewiki page. I normally work at nl.wiktionary and I had added a bunch of Bugis words from Matthes dictionary. nl:wikt:Categorie:Woorden in het Boeginees In Lontara. I had downloaded Saweri and I could see them, cut and paste them and they were visible on wikitionary. All in firefix on a Windows machine. I even put a link to the saweri page for people who wanted to check my work. A few 'updates' later and everything reverted to illegible squares. I redownloaded saweri and another font TULISAN, restarted my computer, but nothing works. As I understand little about such technicalities, my question is simply: help!?

Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Extension request

I would request to develop such extension for all languages that create an extra tab with read, edit or history tab, or anywhere else, when any confirmed user hits that button, this extension auto corrects all spelling mistakes existed on the page.
It may be useful to create a special page for those wikis they enabled it, where they put and enter the wrong and right spellings.

User:Amire80, shalom! There is currently a dispute between me and a Filipino editor (see: User PacificWarrior101) about what is considered worthy or not worthy of publishing on a WP article page because of what may or may not be perceived by others as distasteful (bad taste). See the editor's Talk page, the sub-title "Kamusta ka na." The editor in question has posted a Commons photograph of Israeli singer, Dana International, a photograph which I personally feel shows bad taste and tends to "flout" the dignity and self-respect of the Yemenite Jewish people. I voiced my concerns to the editor about my feelings of repugnancy evoked by the picture on a main article page that treats on ethnicity, namely Yemenite Jews. Most Yemenite Jews will feel a sense of shame by seeing this photo of "Dana International" on the page that speaks specifically about them as a people - and who, by the way, are mostly conservative to religious. Can you please help me resolve this dispute with User PacificWarrior101? I sense that our Filipino editor is recalcitrant to sound-reason. While casually reading Romanization of Persian I came across a reference to "UniPers", and followed the link... which went nowhere. It looks like the link was to a section of that article that you removed. I know nothing about the topic, so I'm not questioning your judgment in doing that. Unfortunately though the article defines the official Iranian Latin script and the Bahá'i in terms of UniPers, without defining the latter, so a lot of information has gone missing. Wow, very old memories.

I remember being involved in the deletion of a related article called "IPA2" (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/IPA2 (2nd nomination)). I don't remember being directly involved in the deletion of the "UniPers" article, but it seems like it had a similar problem - no source. You can see an old version here. I don't know much Persian myself, but an article whose only source is a dubious personal website without a clear professional backing is always suspect. In fact, it's possible that all references to UniPers should be removed from Romanization of Persian.

It is also possible that somebody who knows Persian well can prove that I'm actually talking nonsense and that UniPers is a valid system :)

British Jews

I complained on the Talk-page of British Jews that they have decided to remove the name and picture of the best female British scientist Rosalind Franklin from the list of prominent British Jews, but they have ignored my request to reverse this edit. My comment is as follows: I find it really strange that a Wikipedia editor has decided to remove the name of DNA pioneer, and possibly the best UK female scientist, (i.e. Rosalind Franklin) from the main pictures of prominent British Jews. I think her picture and name should have not been removed, especially when there are only 2 women pictures left (out of 12 pictures). Please could someone reverse this edit and add the late Rosalind Franklin's picture to the list of prominent British Jews.

Universal Language Selector

Your answer to my query on enwiki was helpful for me to understand the idea behind that change. Afterwards I posted on https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Universal_Language_Selector/Design/Interlanguage_links#At_first_I_just_laughed_but_now_I_see_a_.28small.29_point, but at the moment that page seems not to be active. As you seem to be involved in the project 4 short (!) points for consideration:

Giving a personalized choice of relevant languages at the top of the language list is a good idea. Would help me in my style of article creation (usually snooping around in 3-8 versions how they do the intro to the topic)
Showing "Common languages" by geographical location is not a good idea. Because presently the results are still random (I see the results for my position at Tehran), and from my knowledge of living in multilanguage countries in Asia and Africa not really relevant for users. Nobody over here knows e.g. Georgian.
sorting the languages by continents is also not really helpful, rather adds to confusion and takes more time (to look for which language where? Especially for languages which have status in more than 1 continent. Looking for Português or Nederlands in the abc-sorting I can straight go to "P" or "N"; here I have to look first if the programme deems it to be international or European; putting in both makes the whole list longer.) And if I look e.g. for Tatar, I have to know it is in Europe, not Asia. If I remember Turkey as Asian country, I look in vain...
the remaining partly alfabetic list (sometimes showing 9, sometimes less) is decorative but pretty useless.

Language that you select are automatically added to the list, so if you use it, it will adjust to you automatically.
The results are not random. They are selected according to languages that you selected and languages of your area. What makes you think that they are random? Which languages to you see from Tehran? Georgian does appear as one of the languages of Iran, albeit a small one, see the table here: http://unicode.org/cldr/charts/27/supplemental/territory_language_information.html . So you can't say that it's "no-one".
Continents are somewhat useful - they are certainly not damaging. From our statistics we found that most people use the search box to find the language they need anyway.
We are going to improve the "partly alphabetic list" - that's another reason why this feature is still beta.

First; We have new changes in Wiki nahuatl, the international code is correct (.nah), we use this intercode for all Nahuatl variants. In Wikipedia is named Nāhuatl, but native Nahuatl speakers say Nahuatlahtolli (Nahuatl language or Mexican language), nahuatl is a person or Nahuatl speaker, this is similar Runa simi (People language in Quechua), Avañe'e (Guarani language) or Aymar aru (Aymara language).

Second; We need change the old scripture by simple scripture in nahuatl: Classical Nahuatl use diferent alphabet ( Ā ā, Ē ē, Ī ī, Ō ō, Ç ç), but new Nahuatl variants don't use linguistic symbols, this is complicated write in PC; Nahuatl speakers prefer a Simple Alphabet; por example: Xōchitl, Māçatl, Nāuatl (old scripture) and Xochitl, Mazatl, Nahuatl (simple alphabet).

A Modern Hebrew pronunciation question

Greetings: I have a Hebrew pronunciation question. Normally the pronunciation of the יו combination at the end of words when it signals possession is /v/. But when the last vowel of the word is /i/ I've also heard the pronunciation /u/, so for אביו 'his father' both /a-viv/ and /a-vi-u/. Is that correct? Thanks. אביו is /aviv/, pronounced the same as in תל אביב, though it's a different word.

Most often יו is -av, which looks a bit unusual, but you get used to it.

Occasionally it's -yo, for example in מיטת חוליו - /miˈtat ħoˈljo/ - "his sickness bed".

"Her husband" is usually בעלה, not אישה. Most Israelis probably don't even know that the possessive ה is "supposed" to be different from the feminine ה, so these words would be pronounced the same if anybody actually used such a construction, but I don't recall ever hearing it. If somebody wants to use איש instead of בעל for "her husband", it's far more likely to be "האיש שלה", with a separate word for "her" (or maybe בן הזוג שלה or בן זוגה, which literally means "her coupled", or in more natural English - her spouse or her partner.)

Some women do say "אישי" for "my husband", though. It's a mix of mild feminism with religious inspiration from Hosea 2: "And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call me Ishi; and shalt call me no more Baali". At least אישהּ is used in the Bible, e.g. וַתִּתֵּ֧ן גַּם־לְאִישָׁ֛הּ עִמָּ֖הּ וַיֹּאכַֽל. But I get your point, which is, if I understand you correctly, that the sound /h/ is never used in Israeli Hebrew a the end of words? Which is surprising to me since, unless I'm mistaken, /h/ can be found at the end of non-final syllables as in יהיה /ih-ye/ 'will be'. Or do Israelis pronounce that word /i-ye/? I also have one question about כתיב מלא. Regarding the conventions of כתיב מלא, do Israelis do more or less what they want (within limits) or do they rigidly follow a standard practice? In particular I'm curious if the letter ה is ever used as אם קריאה in כתיב מלא beyond its well-known use as אם קריאה in כתיב חסר? At the end of the word the consonant ה is pronounced only by a rather small number of people who take care to speak in a standard way, and in casual speech it's completely silent.

In the middle and beginning of words it's almost entirely merged with the role of א. Nevertheless, quite a lot of people do pronounce it differently. In a word like יהיה a lot of people will completely omit it, so it will be something like /jije/ rather than /jihje/.

About כתיב מלא - Israelis do more or less what they want within limits. Only a very small number of crazy nerds (like me ;) ) follow the Academy's standard (or, for that matter, are aware of its existence). Even Hebrew teachers in school usually don't follow it or know it (this is my #1 reason for not wanting to send my son to school, although I have a few years of naive hope till I have to decide). Well what I mean is this: כתיב חסר uses, as אמות קריאה, the four letters א, ה, ו, י. Now the extensions in the use of אמות קריאה that כתיב מלא introduced only make use of the letters ו and י (either using them as אמות קריאה in more places than כתיב חסר or doubling them, וו and יי, where one wants precisely to show that they are not being used as אמות קריאה but as full letters). However, as to the letters א and ה, well כתיב מלא uses them as אמות קריאה only where they are already being used as such in כתיב חסר. In other words כתיב מלא, at least the official version, does not extend their use as אמות קריאה. At least so far as I am aware. Now I could see places where the two letters א and ה could be used to improve readability and reduce ambiguity and I was wondering if in the informal use of כתיב מלא by Israelis (not in the official rules) such uses occur. Here is one specific and very common example: even כתיב מלא (as practiced say in newspapers) does not give you a way (other than context, which is not always available) to distinguish in the 2nd person singular of verbal forms, prepositions and possessives, a masculine form from a feminine form. For example לך 'to you' may stand for both the masculine /lkha/ and the feminine /lakh/, אמרת 'you said' may stand for both the masculine /amarta/ and the feminine /amart/, etc. Now using ה as אם קריאה in such cases would make it easy to distinguish between the two: one would simply write לכה and אמרתה in the masculine and לך and אמרת in the feminine and the ambiguity would disappear. In second-person past tense verbs it is used occasionally by some people. Socially, it is definitely considered a mistake, comparable to writing "seperate" or confusing "their" with "there", or even more wrong than that. It's always spontaneous - it's never intentionally used by educated people for disambiguation. Of course it's amusing to note that such spelling was actually used occasionally in the Bible, see s:Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar/44. Flexion of the Perfect of Qal#GHGpar-44-g. Hebrew educators in the late 19th centuries could have decided to teach children to write like that and today it could become the standard.

The problem is, that this wiki is very strongly affected by spambots (I don't know why this wiki, when im blocking these bots, and deleted that spam), and not used by any user (except me), so I don't see any user who needs this wiki, but I want to ask your project first, because I don't want to decide it, if it is unclear that someone still needs it. If your project don't need it, we will lock the database there, via siteadmin, so nobody can do anything there, no editing, deleting, blocking and so on, just read. If there is a new reason to use this wiki later, you or others can ask me oder another beta steward or developer, than someone of us can unlock the database. gr8 comment u made on Rotten Tomatoes

hello Amire80, I was really digging ur comment on Rotten Tomatoes...as a serious film fan (i used to work as an animator) i've always felt that Rotten Tomatoes is full of "hipster attitude." They seem to emulate disrespect for arts & film as a "cool" way to promote themselves, a sad sign of our times-- a sarcastic hipster signature of ego. In a related sense, I fist saw ur wiki-work in ur post of an Aleppo Codex image for an article describing Koheleth--yes I'm Jewish also & was recently listening to that most classic-rock song from my Jewish-summer-camp days, performed by The Byrds [originally written by Pete Seger, truly a Spiritual & deeply human dude], the song "Turn Turn Turn."

It's lyrics are from the book of Koheleth, thus in a way tying-into the vanity of hipsters like Rotten Tomatoes. Truly a song of consciousness-raising that emerged from that gr8 folk-hero music scene of the 60s/70s. It was good to see a comment on the enigmatic nature of Koheleth in a quote from that wiki with the insight, "On this reading, Koheleth's sayings are goads, designed to provoke dialogue and reflection in his readers, rather than to reach premature and self-assured conclusions." I appreciate the deeply human/honest approach that no matter who/what Koheleth is, was or was not saying, he certainly intended to bring forth an attitude of thinking and pondering even though most critics & philosophers tend only to dissect the book along the lines of it's concepts of futility & burn-out (such as "all is vanity"). You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. I wanted to follow-up on an message I sent you in September regarding the need for you to sign a confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 in order to maintain your access from Wikimedia to nonpublic information, and specifically to the OTRS system.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are transitioning to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain their access. You are receiving this message because you have access to nonpublic information by way of the OTRS system and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy. If you do not sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015, you will lose your OTRS access.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnumwikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain your access to nonpublic information.
