Honest mistake on George S Patton

Hello,

Thank you for raising these concerns. You are right about Patton. However. as you may know, Maghakian won over two dozen medals and the medals featured on the infobox are in fact his notable ones. You should check out an article like John_Shalikashvili which shows all his medals with the small picture logos. I would like something similar. Proudbolsahye (talk) 02:28, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members).

So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:

  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

Invitation

Hi Abraham, B.S.

In case you didn't know, there is an editathon coming up following a backstage pass in the State Library of New South Wales by some of the Library's curators on 23 November. This may or may not be a convenient time and place for you but it should be an interesting event. We hope it will be productive too.

This is the first time that an Australian cultural institution has opened its doors to us in this way and will be a special opportunity because the Library is providing: one of its best rooms; its expert curators (along with their expertise and their white gloves); a newly launched website (containing new resources); and of course, items from its collection (including rare and usually unavailable material) which we can look at, learn from, and use, to improve WP articles. For example, on the chosen topic (Australia and WWI), the Library holds many diaries and manuscripts from the period.

If you could make it, I am sure the encyclopedia would benefit! As you can see from the Library's project page, they have connected this editathon with their own work. They have already set out a wide range of resources to make things easier for us. What do you think of the idea of a "Maintenance Category", something like [[category:Australian generals without info boxes]], or something similar? The 'powers that be' seem to be on a little bit of a war path regarding categories lately, so it might be wise to shy away from that idea (otherwise it may be deleted before it is of any use). (Update) FYI, I haven't forgotten or lost interest - it's a case of discovering that things are not as I thought. Taking a lead from your VC page, I thought a good way to go might be to set up an OzGenerals page. (Once again I was quickly reminded what a big list they are.) When I started to get down to it (and I'm still only in the "C"s), I discovered that, on average, the quality of the existing pages is quite high. And also, I've yet to come across an existing page that DOESN'T have an infobox. My major-discovery-for-me is that there are a LOT more red links than I expected. These days, I'm no longer interested in edit warring. Sadly, that doesn't mean that something I do won't annoy someone.
If something I do annoys you, please tell me - preferably on a talk page, or via email if necessary - rather than in an edit comment. I'm sure we can sort it out without embarking on an edit war. I've come to the realization that, in general, we agree. It seems silly for us to start an edit-war over minor details when, in general, we agree on the big things. I have the impression that R-S is no longer a member of the ADF, so I am not sure about the accuracy of the phrase at the end of the lede which says: "three recipients of the Victoria Cross for Australia are still serving in the Australian Defence Force." The retirement announcement, I believe, stipulated that Roberts-Smith would transfer to the Army Reserves, in which case I think the above statement is still technically correct. The fact that Roberts-Smith was in uniform during the Anzac Day ceremonies in Canberra would also appear to support his still being in the Army in some capacity. Abraham, B.S. Medal table ordering

Hey there. Interesting point that you brought up on the Matthew Mitcham page regarding medal ordering in the infobox. I was acting under the impression that there was no consensus reached at Template talk:Medal templates documentation#Order of medals, and based on personal preference (original consensus of ordering first by chronology with most recent first, and then ordering secondly by medal type within each event) I went ahead and made that the style of the article when I went to tidy up the medal information.

I acknowledge that the style on the pages you listed, for example Ian Thorpe and Michael Phelps, are of your preferred style. However, I do believe that the old style has more merit, because:

  1. Ordering by chronology rather than medal type is more helpful for a reader because it is easier to count the number of each type of medal than to work out the changes in an athlete's medal performance over time. The latter is important because one often wants to know when an athlete excelled, improved, or faced challenges in their career. Therefore it is better for the medal table to be ordered in such a way to assist a reader with the second, more difficult task.
  2. The first task, that of counting how many of each type of medal an athlete has accumulated, can be easily remedied by an extra medal count table, whereas it is impossible to remedy the second task of giving a reader a chronological impression with any other extra table.
  3. The best compromise would be to keep the medal table ordered in the original style, and, if the sportsperson has a large number of medals that makes garnering an impression of how many golds, silvers and bronzes they gained in each competition difficult, then this can be fixed by adding an extra medal count table in the infobox.
  4. Finally, I believe it is better to order competitions by most recent first, rather than earliest first, because whatever is more recent is usually of greater significance to a curious reader today.

Keen to hear your thoughts and arguments. I am open to moving this discussion to the infobox talk page if you feel that would be better.

Infobox - commands

Hi - I just thought I would consult with you on the order in which we set out commands for UK senior officers in infoboxes. I think in the UK we normally put the most junior command first and then list them in increasing importance. I see that for Richard Dannatt, Baron Dannatt and a few others it is the opposite way round. Is there any guidance in the MoS on this or do you have strong views on this? Best wishes. Hi Dormskirk. I don't believe there is anything set out in the MoS or other guidelines about this, rather it appears to be based on editor discretion. My personal preference is for the most recent command to be listed first, in reverse chronological order. In my experience, infoboxes—including those on UK military personnel—are rather inconsistent in which is listed first, so my changes, in part, sort some consistency. That, and I see the list of commands similar to that of the honours, in which the most notable/recent are recorded above those of a less senior level, flowing through to the lower level and potentially less notable commands. On all the articles on British field marshals (over 100 of them) that I have worked on, I have put the commands in chronological order so, while I am merely striving for consistency too, there would be quite a lot of work to move them all to reverse chronological order. Postnominals and honorific prefixes

Hello. I noticed that you removed a lot of titles and postnominals like OBE from instances of {{infobox military person}}, and I have to admit that I'm quite unhappy with that. Is there a consensus for this broad change? If so, you might also want to remove the template parameters just to avoid confusion.
