Winter storm naming

I just wanted to make you aware of this discussion I started at Winter storm naming. I have no intentions of making any changes to the article myself, but was just hoping to get input from editors previously involved in the article (or recently-closed AfD) in an effort to improve the article and clarify its purpose. Attribution of public-domain text at 2013 Pakistan earthquake

Hi. I am not an admin and this is just a friendly comment to a fellow editor. You obviously know it's ok to add public domain text verbatim to an article, but you might not realize that you need to attribute the text to the source to avoid any appearance of plagarism. The guideline is that there needs to be a visible attribution in either the text or the reference section, so your comment in the html just proves good intentions. Thank you. I was not aware of the requirement to attribute PD content and put the html comment in so that the section wouldn't be accused of copy-vio and to encourage others to re-write/improve upon that text. I added the text just a couple hours after the quake, when the section seemed both informative and timely, which is why I simply copied without editing the text. List of Airbus A380 orders and deliveries

You changed the Emirates delivery numbers in List of Airbus A380 orders and deliveries. This is not a small job and cannot be done in isolation, the tables now do not sum, and they disagree with each other. These tables, or templates, are also included in other related pages and causes discrepancies on those pages including rendering some of the text in those pages incorrect. The tables also do not match the references cited. Changing this little number is a very big job. In the past it was chaos because people updated the tables piecemeal in response to press releases and other sources, consequently, the consensus arose to use ONLY the official Airbus O&D, this pretty much fixed the numbers churn. This comes out monthly so we just need to wait. I would recommend that the change be reverted. Ex nihil (talk) 09:45, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dual citizens on MH17

There is some discrepency in the list, there are three Dutch people with dual citizenship one each from Israel, USA and Belgium, two Britons one each from South Africa and New Zealand, so shouldnt tehe dual citizen section for all these countries includ these numbers? inspector (talk) 15:52, 19 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, but how can it be modified to note suspended services? The reason I changed the table format was because I didn't recognize it (at the time I made the edit) as a common table format (and there was no ref for the "start date")...I usually see the second table format without start/end but with a notes section (Table format (without start/end dates)). WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

Dude's continuing to be disruptive. Now that it's evident he "lost" on the sortable table at Los Angeles City Attorney, he's gone back to edit-warring on Template:LosAngelesCityAttorneys. I've explained what I did there numerous times, and yet his most recent comment at Template talk:LosAngelesCityAttorneys seems to act like I did it BOLDly for no apparent reason. Could you explain to him what's going on? Cuz I'm at the end of my tether with him right now. Change of name

Hello, AHeneen. I wanted you to be among the first to know that I have changed my username to User:BeenAroundAWhile. That’s because I have, well, been around a while — 83 years to be exact, on April 8.

First, I want to apologize if I have upset you with some of my recent edits. Obviously I don’t mean anything personal by my edits, and I make them only because I think they will be good for the encyclopedia.

But I did want to introduce myself. For a good many years I have specialized in creating or editing Wikipedia articles about Los Angeles — its neighborhoods, its history, its public servants — oh, all that stuff. I have either originated or contributed to most of the articles on Los Angeles City Council members and Los Angeles city attorneys, dating back to 1853. I’ve been able to use my L.A. Public Library card to good advantage over the Internet, even though I don’t live in L.A. any more. I’m glad you share my interest in history.

Also I notice your interest in international relations. That was my field when I was at UCLA, although I graduated from UC Riverside with a major in government. I worked for two years in Geneva, with the International Labor Organization. Interesting life, but I returned to UCLA to get an MA in journalism.

I suppose I am addicted to Wikipedia. As a former newspaper reporter and editor, and a journalism professor of a quarter century specializing in writing and editing, I can’t keep away from hammering away at a keyboard in a manic attempt to edit and to create. I have tried to take breaks, but it is an impossibility. Not only do I have my watch list of favorites, but I also hover like a vulture over the Recent Changes page and pounce on any submissions that are found wanting. Oh, well.

As you know, I’ve taken a break from our discussion about improving the templates associated with Los Angeles City Attorney, but I plan to return to it after my week is up. I hope that our chats over there will be friendly.

WikiCup 2015 May newsletter

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by India The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Belarus Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. @Baffle gab1978: Sorry I wasn't able to catch this before you got far through the article. It should be referred to as "Flight 370", not "Flight MH370". This follows the style used on aviation accident articles to refer to the flight as "Flight [number]" and is consistent with all the Flight 370-related articles, except the unofficial theories article (which hasn't been copyedited yet). New arbcom case

Hi AHeneen, a new arbcom case has been opened: Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Kww and The Rambling Man. Reading the discussion, there seems to be a lot about Kww's behauvior but not so much about TRM. I remember there was an excellent ANI thread about TRM's rude behauvior at ITN/C. I found it: Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive852#Inappropriate_conduct_by_administrator_User:The_Rambling_Man and it seems you initiated the thread.

First of all, sorry for my bad english. I wanted to reply to your post on the french Bistro. Your informations are correct, some canton have been deleted and other have changed. Living in elsass, I have in my Watchlist many cities in Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin. The fact is that many cities (also very small cities) are up-to-date, but we are not sure that it's the case of all cities. If you want, I can spend some time tomorow to check it.

Concerning the future new region, I don't know what is the policy on wikidata, but for your information, on frwiki it has been decided that we won't change the regions name until the 1st January, and then at this date a bot will replace all in one hit.

Most entities and people in Category:Search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 still face the same problem, as they had their own history well before the event, except for the Joint Agency Coordination Centre, which was created in response to that event. Not entirely. I was trying to create a category to list people, agencies, and vessels that participated in the search. I realize now that the first two aren't appropriate, however, I would still like a category to group vessels involved in the search. The Search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 article had lists of assets involved in the search, but that seemed like excessive detail for the article and so I removed it (moved to talk page). There are categories such as Category:Gulf War ships that categorize vessels by participation in events, so wouldn't a category of vessels that participated in the search be ok? It's a matter of degree: were any of these people or entities involved in the event during a significant portion of their own lifespan, as in the case of ships in the Gulf War? I now see that you were referring to this. That is the PAGE NUMBER in the preceding reference that supports the given content, using Template:Rp. Read the template's documentation to understand how it works. Template:Rp is used many times throughout the article and is an alternative to converting the entire article to use short citations. I have a question about File:MH370 SIO search.png. Is "7th BTO arc - Location (distance from satellite) of Flight 370 at the time of its last transmission (8:19 MYT / 00:19 UTC, 8 March 2015)" correct or is it a typo?

  • Also I found two small typos: "Acoutsic detections" and "Australian Transport Safey Bureau"

The Atomium: copyright law. (again)

Hi,

Can a person have the copyright of an architectural photograph in the United States that they took? From what I have read, they can't. It seems a bit ambiguous. And if they can't, can one still slap a Creative Commons license on it? --Agamemnus (talk) 06:15, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

US copyright law says that copyright protection for buildings does not include pictures of the building (Wikilegal/Pictorial Representations Architectural Works). The person who photographs a building has copyright protection for their picture (it is a derivative work). So if I take a photograph of a building, I have copyright to my photo, but the architect does not have copyright (for their building) for my photo. AHeneen (talk) 06:30, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
How would one categorize a work that is with extreme likelihood (99.999%) not in any substantive way original, but the very original doesn't publicly exist, or we don't know which one is "the original"? For example, the photo from Flickr that we have on The Atomium is an OK photo (though cut off at the top), but I am sure hundreds or thousands of people have already photographed The Atomium from that exact same angle. --Agamemnus (talk) 16:53, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

But what about this though? "The transformation, modification or adaptation of the work must be *substantial* and bear its author's personality to be original and thus protected by copyright." Is it substantial? One could argue that in an age where photography is cheap and easy, a simple 2D photo of a 3D object (where many nearly identical ones exist) is *not* substantial. --Agamemnus (talk) 19:55, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The law gives the photographer copyright protection. I am not a judge to decide if the change is "substantial", but we must be cautious and assume that the work qualifies for copyright protection. AHeneen (talk) 13:12, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Scotland Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Philadelphia Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
  2. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
  4. Somerset Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
  5. Washington, D.C. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
  6. Somerset Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
  7. United States Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
  8. England Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

My original confusion arose because some of the media articles, which I used as sources and which you redacted, erroneously refer to McAnulty as "U.S. Ambassador to Somalia". I was of the opinion that by the time of my last edits, I had clarified that McAnulty is an envoy in charge of a mission or what used to be called a legation.
