The above post wasn't just a wiki-joke, I was genuinely puzzled by who and how anyone would calculate such a thing. I was already aware that the human brain produces relatively large amounts of heat (more heat than light perhaps) - and all sorts of odd factoids resulting from that (supposedly if our bodies had remained hairy all over, we would have been incapable of shedding sufficient 'brain heat' and would have fried our own brains - I know the feeling).

I also have an odd mixture of practical experience and scientific ignorance, so I was perfectly happy dealing with BTUs and Therms when dealing with boilers and radiators and suchlike, but baffled since they started referring to these things in watts, since in my personal 15WattSphere, watts are electrical units!

I presume someone has calculated the heat output of a human brain and rendered it as watts?Pincrete (talk) 09:41, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ah! Sorry, I misinterpreted you - someone else was complaining to me about citations at the time so I thought it may have been a reference to that.

I've done some googling since I honestly had no idea. Here [1] is a brief article I found - it doesn't have the precise figure, but explains how they track chemical processes using Magnetic resonance imaging. Fascinating stuff.

That's interesting that you have experience with industrial equipment. I barely have any practical skills at all, it feels very isolated from the real world up in my ivory tower. Must be fun playing with such big toys! 20WattSphere (talk) 09:56, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

By the way - sympathise with the challenge of converting everything to metric. One hint is that a watt is actually a speed of energy use - 1 watt being equal to 1 joule consumed each second. Checking out the link you posted, 1 Therm is around 105MJ, so if your brain is consuming 20 watts, it will take 105M/20 = 5 million seconds to use 1 Therm. 20WattSphere (talk) 10:03, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
