The Longhorns[edit]

Four-piece outfit, The Longhorns, were formed in their hometown base of Kilmarnock whilst still teenagers, back in the mid-1980s. A lot has changed since then but their musical influences (The Clash, The Who, Steve Earle etc) are still pretty evident in their songs today.

They released their debut album ‘Feelin’ Down’ on Edinburgh label 53rd & 3rd in December 1987. The band had a strong post-punk following which resulted in sales in continental Europe and China.

A single, not from the album, ‘All I Want From You’ was released in January 1989, following a line-up, with original members Barry Meehan & Willie Fraser, joined by Stuart Layburn. Tich Hamilton completed the line-up on drums.

Back in the day, having released their debut album and single, the lads decanted to the big smoke, where they established themselves as a regular live feature at the world-renowned 'Marquee' club in London's soho in 1989 / 90. Paul McHolland and Dougie Adam joined Meehan and Fraser to complete the line-up. The Mean Fiddler was another London venue to find the band playing their own brand of guitar-based songs. The band interspersed their London assault with frequent sortees back over the border into Scotland to play, including many appearances in the then vibrant university / college circuit. Support slots with the established acts of that era, generous press coverage, and radio airtime led to a brief flirtation with a major record label. Having returned to Scotland to establish a base to work on material for a new album, the band took a break in 1992 "'for a couple of weeks". This short sabbatical lasted longer than anticipated, as it was 2007 before they got back together. No musical differences or fractious relationships here - they just enjoyed the break from what had been an intense period . Having re-emerged, the most notable change is that their prestigious live schedule has been replaced by an 'easy-does-it' approach - their forthcoming appearance will still not bring the total number of live shows to double digits since they re-emerged. They like it this way. Wjf67 (talk) 10:49, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
