Welcome to Wikipedia[edit]

WikiProject University of Pittsburgh

As a current or past contributor to a Pitt-related article, I thought I'd let you know about WikiProject University of Pittsburgh, a collaborative effort to improve Wikipedia's coverage of the University of Pittsburgh and the Pitt Panthers. If you would like to participate, you can visit the project page, where you can join the project and see a list of open tasks and related articles. Thanks! CrazyPaco (talk) 08:07, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

UPittIT, please let me know if I can help. I second all of the comments on the Request for Feedback. I think you'll need some external sources to confirm notability for Wikipedia. See if you can find any mentions of D-Scribe (in general) in trade publications, magazines or newspapers (even search the Post-Gazette or Trib archives), etc. They need not be on-line in order to use as a reference. Your boss may know of places it has gotten some press. As is, the article may be criticized as WP:NOTDIRECTORY or WP:NOTPROMOTION. You are absolutely right though, it is better to have one overall article as individual collections will not likely warrant notability on their own, especially if you are having trouble sourcing the main parent article. The collections can always grow into their own articles in the future if it is so warranted. However, one thing that D-Scribe is involved in that may warrant their own articles right off the bat are all the academic journals it is beginning to publish. Academic journals are considered by many to have special allowances for notability because they aren't themselves usually the topic of coverage, and if any e-journals published by D-Scribe are indexed in Scopus, Social Sciences Citation Index, or similar, that generally satisfies notability and they can have their own article.

Be aware that the existing Hillman Library article sort of has the ULS within its scope and it is already mentioned in the University of Pittsburgh Press article. E-publish.

I think that you want to include D-scribe in the Digital libraries category. There are a few other examples of articles on similar subject there which you could use for ideas (see University of Florida Digital Collections and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries Digital Collections).

Most of all, don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions or need help. Wikipedia has sort of a culture unto itself, and it can be frustrating to work in until you get a handle on things. CrazyPaco (talk) 08:07, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Ethonology icon.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Ethonology icon.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Non-free files in your user space[edit]

Hey there UPittIT, thank you for your contributions. I am a bot, alerting you that non-free files are not allowed in user or talk space. I removed some files I found on User:UPittIT/Ethnology: An International Journal of Cultural and Social Anthropology. In the future, please refrain from adding fair-use files to your user-space drafts or your talk page.

  • See a log of files removed today here.

Orphaned non-free image File:Ethonology icon.jpg[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Ethonology icon.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

PLEASE NOTE:

  • I am a bot, and will therefore not be able to answer your questions.
  • I will remove the request for deletion if the file is used in an article once again.
  • If you receive this notice after the image is deleted, and you want to restore the image, click here to file an un-delete request.

D-Scribe Digital Publishing feedback[edit]

Hi UPittIT,

I think the article is much improved since the first time. The addition of external references will probably cement its notability. I think you may run into issues of WP:DIRECTORY and WP:NOTLINK. I do think someone will notice and have issue with the extensive list of links. I know you want to provide ease of access to every collection, but it that list of external links likely won't last out in the wild once you go live with the article. There is also a possibility that you should be prepared to consolidate the listing of collections into a more prose style of writing as opposed to an outline, but I think you'll just have to see what feedback you get. In any case, I don't think there is much reason to hold it back much further. See WP:IMPERFECT. Just be prepared for others to edit, as there is no ownership of articles so don't take edits personally. (I'll probably do some edits when it goes live myself...generally it is against Wikipedia:Etiquette to edit someone else's sandbox or user page). Remember to be WP:CIVIL, use the article's discussion page to talking about edits, and let the wiki take its course.

Regarding the images you uploaded that go with the e-journals, when you are claiming "fair-use" for an image, the image actually has to be used in the main wikipedia space (your user space sandbox is inadequate). Those images will be deleted unless that is corrected, and fair-use justification given. See Wikipedia:Non-free content. That is typically strictly enforced by the wikipedia community. You will likely need a fair use justification because Wikipedia itself is licensed by fair use Attribution-ShareAlike which means people can build on its content and use it commercially, which is less restrictive than Pitt's CC license. "Fair-use" will allow the logos' use for informational/educational purposes (like and encyclopedia) without infringing on the license it is released under (copyright or more restrictive CC). BTW, images like File:BSJ icon.jpg aren't copyrightable because they are made up of just text (simple shapes), so they can be uploaded to Wiki Commons (block and script Pitt logos can't be copyrighted either, but the image of the Panther can be). Trademarks like "Pitt", or IBM or Coke, however, should be tagged as "Trademarks". If your e-journal articles go live before the images are deleted, you need to stick a template (likely Template:Logo fur) on the images that aren't just text. FYI, you may want to take a look at Wikipedia:Notability (academic journals). ISSN indexing isn't really indexing, and won't guarantee notability, not that these journals may pass notability on their other merits. I've been involved in these journal deletion discussions before (see here), so I just want to make you aware of it. Feel free to email me as well if you have any questions. File copyright problem with File:Revista_000.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Revista_000.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Chris G Bot (talk) 01:50, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the username you have chosen (UPittIT) seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of a group, company or website.

There are two issues with this:

  1. It is possible that you have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, you must exercise great caution when editing on topics related to your organization.
  2. Your account cannot represent a group of people. You may wish to create a new account with a username that represents only you. Alternatively, you may consider changing your username to avoid giving the impression that your personal account is being used for promotional purposes.

Regardless of whether you change your name or create a new account, you are not exempted from the guidelines concerning editing where you have a conflict of interest. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. --Hammersoft (talk) 20:47, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Heads up[edit]

With respect, we can not accept the work you are doing. First, as I noted in the section above, you have a conflict of interest. The issue here isn't that you aren't seeking financial gain. The issue is that a person such as yourself acting at the direction of your employer has an inherent bias that makes it exceptionally difficult to create a neutral resource. Secondly and even more importantly, a considerable quantity of the work you have posted to the various articles you are creating in your userspace are copyright violations. You can not take materials from a University of Pittsburgh web site and post them here. For example, you've taken material from this site and posted it to User:UPittIT/D-Scribe Digital Publishing. Without a specific release from an authorized copyright agent of the University of Pittsburgh submitted to the permissions queue of the OTRS system, we can not accept this material. It must be deleted. Third your username represents an organization and is not acceptable. I've reported this username to WP:UAA and expect it will shortly be blocked from further editing. This is NOT to be hostile towards you in any respect. You are very welcome to contribute to Wikipedia on subjects not related to your employer. Please feel free to start a new account under a username that does not represent the university in any respect. If you have questions, please ask. Normally, even when blocked, you can post messages to your talk page (this page). Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 21:27, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

July 2011[edit]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.

Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, celebrity or other well-known individual, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, or organization. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

You are still welcome to write about something other than your company or organization. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

Attempt to address concerns[edit]

Greetings,

When I first began this project of adding information about the digital libraries at the University of Pittsburgh, I explicitly asked about the conflict of interest issue. I was told that due to my username, I would have to be extra careful in ensuring that I had neutral language if I wanted to be able to proceed - I was not told to change my username to a less controversial one. Therefore I find it slightly disconcerting that it wasn't until after I'd put months of work into the project that I was blocked. I am still confused over the attention that this username issue has gotten. Wouldn't it be rather easy for a user who is affiliated with whatever they're writing about to simply conceal his or her identity with a misleading username? By using the name I chose, I was attempting to immediately disclose my affiliation so that my article could be held to a higher standard or neutrality.

Additionally, I am a part-time employee. I only have five hours each week to work on this Wikipedia project. I think that may be part of the blame for my perceived lack or response or interaction. Also, this is my first time working on Wikipedia. I doubt it is of any surprise to you that it is not the most intuitive layout ever. I was under the impression that imperfect items could be in my sandbox. The language of the material may appear partial, or the photos may not have clear tags on them yet, but I thought the point of the sandbox was to have a place to work and perfect the material so that it can be published. It now appears that just as much attention is given to the material inside the sandbox as is given to the actual pages of Wikipedia. It was certainly my misunderstanding.

Contrary to the discussions that have been going on about my use of images, I have been putting a great deal of effort into securing images and permissions that would not violate any copyright policies. My first go round of just uploading the thumbnails was misguided, I admit it. However, since then I have been working on a trial-and-error basis to figure out what tags I have to include to make a photo acceptable. I apologize for this methodology, but again, it is quite hard to secure this kind of information on the site. I finally thought I made a breakthrough last week with determining that the way and intention toward the images I wanted to use qualified for the fair use rationale which, as far as I understand it, they do. I therefore uploaded the images under these conditions. I realize that the pages must be officially launched in order for the photos to qualify as fair use, but I thought I had until the end of the week to do this.

There is valuable information on these pages, and I do not think the world should be made to be unaware of it simply because I am new to the Wikipedia community. I think someone should still work to publish them, but I'm not exactly sure how I can proceed from here and not get in trouble with the community. I'm certainly not going to attempt to appeal my username being blocked since I don't entire understand how I can abuse this function, so I don't want to risk doing it. This is a fairly substantial project for me, and I would like very much to not see all of it wasted. I would therefore appreciate clear guidance on how to proceed from here.

Even after I post this, I have no idea if any of you who originally brought forth the concerns will be made aware of it. Do I have to post your names somewhere in here?

Thank you,

UPittIT (talk) 16:03, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • The problem here is that you are working at the behest of an organization. Wikipedia generally does not accept that type of editing. Your edits, try as you might, will be inherently biased. Whatever articles you feel should be included in the encyclopedia can be requested at Wikipedia:Requested articles. Yes, I know, you can't edit. But, you can create another account using a different IP than the one you've been using for this account. But before doing that, you need to be aware there are serious issues in all of these articles. Wikipedia depends upon reliable secondary sources. You and your project team are not such a source. If any of the projects you've attempted to write about here are notable, someone will write about them eventually. --Hammersoft (talk) 18:52, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, UPittIT. It has been over six months since you last edited your Articles for Creation draft article submission, "Bolivian Studies Journal".

In accordance with our policy that Articles for Creation is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on User:UPittIT/D-Scholarship@Pitt requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://d-scholarship.pitt.edu. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
