The Original Barnstar
Your contributions and hard work on Macedonia (ancient kingdom) is appreciated! SILENTRESIDENT 22:52, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@SILENTRESIDENT: thank you very much! It's an honor to improve the page, especially since it is such an important article and yet so neglected. Pericles of AthensTalk 23:05, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A small token of appreciation[edit]

The Barnstar of WikiProject Greece
For much-needed and excellent work on the articles around ancient Macedonia; instead of getting bogged down in the dispute over semantics like everybody else, you went ahead and transformed the articles beyond recognition. Kudos and again kudos! Constantine 15:46, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Constantine: thank you kindly! It is my pleasure to improve such critical articles on history that have been surprisingly neglected. Pericles of AthensTalk 17:53, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Macedonia (ancient kingdom)[edit]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Macedonia (ancient kingdom) you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Gratefulness + question[edit]

Hello PoA, First of all, I just wanted to let you know; amazing work on the Macedonia (ancient kingdom) article. Splendid, for real! - LouisAragon (talk) 23:47, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Btw, I noticed that you have done excellent work on numerous other key history articles of antiquity, such as the Parthian Empire and Sogdia. Based on this, I was wondering whether you'd perhaps be willing to develop any of these two articles; the Achaemenid Empire and/or the Kingdom of Pontus. Especially the Achaemenid Empire is in what I would describe as a rather poor state, despite being of such enormous historical significance. I was thinking about expanding both articles myself, but I had to come the conclusion that my own in-depth knowledge about these periods of antiquity (I'm fine with late antiquity) has simply withered too much after all these years. Anyhow, looking forward to your response! All the best, - LouisAragon (talk) 23:47, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
His LouisAragon! I'd like to significantly rewrite the article on the Achaemenid Empire, for sure, but that's a huge project. It would take a while. At the very least I could try to improve the article. I was actually hoping on improving the article on the Sasanian Empire first. Both of them need a lot of work, to be honest. It was fun writing the Parthian Empire article, but unfortunately I don't own most of the sources that I used for it. Even then most of them wouldn't be useful for writing the Achaemenid article. You can expect me to improve that article, but don't have incredibly high hopes to see any major improvements in the near future. I'm juggling two Good article nominations and a Featured article nomination at the moment. When those are done my energies can be focused elsewhere. Cheers! Pericles of AthensTalk 00:55, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

tall/taper[edit]

"Tall" is an adjective, and "taper" is a noun, and they are not synonyms. More explanation is needed as to why the same word means both of these. ---Ehrenkater (talk) 22:02, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Ehrenkater: Yeah, about that. Since you seem to think it is highly problematic, I don't think a lengthy explanation of a single word is going to be necessary. It's best just to remove it if you consider it to be that unclear to the average reader. Feel free to bring up anything else, but in the meantime the word "taper" has been removed. Pericles of AthensTalk 23:13, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine. (I'm just a bit curious now about what the lexicon entry actually means.) ---Ehrenkater (talk) 16:28, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Macedonia (ancient kingdom)[edit]

The article Macedonia (ancient kingdom) you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Macedonia (ancient kingdom) for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Iazyges -- Iazyges (talk) 22:21, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's excellent news! Thank you. I'll be sure to nominate it for a DYK. Pericles of AthensTalk 23:03, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proper placement of DYK nominations of GA articles[edit]

PericlesofAthens, I've just moved your DYK nomination of Macedonia (ancient kingdom) so it's now listed under February 20, the date it was listed as a GA. Whenever you nominate a DYK, it should go into the appropriate date in the "Current nominations" section; that date is the date it was approved as a GA, or if it isn't a GA, then the date the article first appeared in mainspace (if new) or when the 5x expansion began. I thought you'd want to know for any future nominations you may be making. Thanks! BlueMoonset (talk) 00:20, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nice image choice. Hope to see Pericles' expertise on the ancient greek pottery or Minoan civilization articles one day. Cake (talk) 14:28, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@MisterCake:: Thanks! And perhaps one day I will tackle those articles, although I've already promised someone else that I'd help to rewrite the articles on either the Achaemenid Empire of the Sasanian Empire, given my work on the article for the Parthian Empire.Pericles of AthensTalk 14:33, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Take your time, of course. The Achaemenid Empire article in particular looks pretty good to me. Would you know anything additional about Peritas? There's so much on his horse but not so much his dog. Cake (talk) 00:29, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, I'm afraid I don't know much about his dog. Seems interesting, though. Yeah, to be honest, it's the Sasanian Empire one that needs a bit of a rewrite. The Achaemenid article only needs touching up here and there, plus a good amount of additional citations. Pericles of AthensTalk 00:34, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You came at a point where there was a counterproductive and heated atmosphere at the talk page of Ancient Macedonia, and yet, thanks to your eloquent skills, this was turned into a momentum which transformed the poor article into a Good Article! Congrats! -- SILENTRESIDENT 16:15, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@SilentResident:: thank you very much! This was very thoughtful. I hope one day, if it is deemed stable enough, that I will be able to nominate it for Featured Article status. The edit warring back in January, however, is a scar on the present article that must be given time to heal, I'm afraid. In either case thanks for this and for helping to review the article during the GA process. It is now better because of it! Cheers. Pericles of AthensTalk 18:04, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I am ashamed that my lack of patience with certain editors did not help prevent the scar from ever being there in the first place. What we can do from now and on is to safeguard your edits and additions to the page. I hold the faith that everyone who has participated in the talk page, agrees that the article must be protected at all costs. It is our duty to the readers and visitors to Wikipedia to provide them with good articles and keep their quality as best as possible and protect it. Have a good day. -- SILENTRESIDENT 23:53, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Macedonia (ancient kingdom)[edit]

On 3 March 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Macedonia (ancient kingdom), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Alexander the Great, King of Macedon, besieged the Illyrians at Pelion (in modern Albania) in 335 BC, a year before waging war against the Achaemenid Empire? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Macedonia (ancient kingdom). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Macedonia (ancient kingdom)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. The Editor's Barnstar
For transforming Macedonia (ancient kingdom) from a chronically disputed article into a GA-class article, it is my pleasure to award you this editor's barnstar in recognition of carrying out this Herculean task. Way to go Pericles. Dr. K. 00:46, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr.K.: thanks! That was a very thoughtful thing to say. Cheers. Pericles of AthensTalk 03:27, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You are very welcome Pericles. I had lost all hope for that article given its history of conflict. In fact, once, I saved it from becoming a redirect. It seems quite improbable to me seeing it become a GA. Dr. K. 04:43, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Lol. Wow. That's pretty surreal given the current state of the article. I also find it astonishing, looking at the page as it existed in 2014 when you edited it, how similar it was back then to how it looked just two months ago (i.e. as of early January 2017). I took a few peeks at how the article looked going back to 2010, 2008, 2004 even, and it doesn't seem to have changed much in the past ten years. I was actually quite surprised by this, seeing how the article for Alexander the Great has been given so much attention, let alone articles like the Roman Empire. Sadly, relatively very few editors have bothered to spruce up the article on Philip II of Macedon. Pericles of AthensTalk 05:13, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
While we disagreed on a couple of details, the job you did was Herculean to say the least. (Heracles was definitely Greek.) This is a well-deserved Barn Star. --Taivo (talk) 11:28, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I came here to give you a barnstar, but you just got one. Anyway, you're doing great work on them Macedonia articles. Psychotic Spartan 123 09:22, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, right, we all have those death dates of prominent Macedonians memorized and should have noticed that "typo" a long time ago. LOL. There's only one Macedonian ruler's death that even 1% of readers could place within its correct decade. And it wasn't either Antigonus or Demetrius (although his name did start with an "A"). --Taivo (talk) 11:26, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I was speaking rhetorically, talking to myself in my own edit summary, basically, but perhaps I was too optimistic in thinking that historians and Classicists would be combing through my article and haranguing me for my typos. Lol. Pericles of AthensTalk 15:26, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

GA advices[edit]

Dear Pericles of Athens, you have a long experience in turning articles of poor quality into GA, and your writing skills are proven. I could like to follow your example and go for GA status for Athens and Thessalonica but I am not sure how to start. I wonder, what could your first step have been, if you were me? --SILENTRESIDENT 20:55, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@SilentResident: hello! Thanks for the compliments. I would be honored to give you some advice and even continual feedback on your progress if necessary. For starters, you've chosen to tackle two articles that are already pretty well developed, so thankfully much of the work is already done for you! However, they need a lot of work, especially on inline citations for statements that lack them, which is probably where you should begin your efforts. This is where your judgment in shaping the narrative comes into play, because you can even choose to remove sentences that you think are superfluous while adding new content that you consider vital for understanding the topic.
Unfortunately you might be stepping on someone's toes with articles on major cities, since it appears that some editors have put a lot of hard work into these articles already. Aside from adding citations and sprucing things up a bit, leave a message on the talk page announcing your intentions. That way others can know what you're up to, which goes a long way in avoiding potential conflicts and edit warring. The articles already look very well illustrated, with tons of neat pictures, so that's not an area of immediate concern. The prose looks okay, but you could always make improvements and tighten certain sentences to make them crisper, shorter, and easier to digest.
I'm not sure if these articles need any help in terms of layout and organization, since there are already a number of logically-arranged sections and sub-sections, although perhaps you could split apart or combine certain things, or create entirely new sub-sections if necessary. If you do that, always keep in mind that articles shouldn't become behemoths that most visitors won't bother to read, per Wikipedia:Article size. These are already huge articles. Perhaps some trimming couldn't hurt, but of course you should always be careful not to excise something too important, and make sure to shift such material to an appropriate sub-article, like History of Athens for instance. I hope my advice is helpful! Regards, --Pericles of AthensTalk 01:27, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. Thats very useful to know, I will see what I can do. --SILENTRESIDENT 07:56, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

At this rate, we may run out of Barnstars to give Iazyges and you, for your excellent work on these articles. But what matters here is that your work is recognized among the Wikipedians! I still can't believe what you have achieved lately. Congrats to both of you. --SILENTRESIDENT 09:12, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@SilentResident: thanks! I'd probably do even more if I had spare time and if GA nominations moved at a reasonable pace. Given the slow death of the Wikipedia community over the past decade, I'm actually shocked that Macedonia (ancient kingdom) and Rise of Macedon passed their Wikipedia:Good articles nominations so quickly. Something tells me I won't be so lucky with my nominations of Ancient Macedonians, History of Macedonia (ancient kingdom) and Government of Macedonia (ancient kingdom). They'll probably sit dormant for another month or two (maybe even three or four months) before someone bothers to come around and review them. I'm trying to shoot for a Wikipedia:Good topics nomination if not a Wikipedia:Featured topics nomination, although my current FA candidacy for the Macedonia (ancient kingdom) article is moving at a snail's pace. The same happened with my article on Sino-Roman relations, which only recently got its FAC approved and displayed on Wiki's front page for a day. --Pericles of AthensTalk 11:18, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't knew that. Is Wikipedia's active community really smaller nowadays? That's sad. --SILENTRESIDENT 11:36, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It really is. Getting Good Articles passed used to take about a week and sometimes it was handled on the same day that it was nominated. Now it seems like each and every Good Article candidate takes months, or at the very least an entire month just to complete. My recently-nominated Sino-Roman relations article took two whole months to complete its FAC process, when my older FAs took less than a month to complete. Before the Sino-Roman relations FAC it also took four whole months just to get past the GA hurdle, from early September to late December in 2016. I was dumbfounded when that happened, since I came back to Wikipedia in August of that year, after a long hiatus and semi-retirement stretching back to 2010, and hadn't fully realized what had happened to the community. There are only a handful of people reviewing GACs now, and like one overburdened user overseeing everything there. It's really discouraging. --Pericles of AthensTalk 13:43, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Macedonia (ancient kingdom)[edit]

This was a nicely written article. I enjoyed reading and working on it. Just one question: I see "Aigai" frequently, but in Macedonia (ancient kingdom)#Architecture I see "Aigeiai". Is that correct, or should it be "Aigai"?

I don't know if I should continue on with the other related articles as you requested or take up another article on the requests list. I need to ask Miniapolis for guidance.  – Corinne (talk) 01:19, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't seem fair to the other requesters to bundle a fistful of requests into one. List them two at a time (separately) on WP:GOCE/REQ and we'll get to them. All the best, Miniapolis 01:42, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Corinne: hello! Thanks for copy-editing the article and tidying it up. You've done a great job. And yes, it should be "Aigai" in every instance. Hi PericlesofAthens,

Your April 27th edit of Kenneth R. Bartlett, explained as removal of vandalism, reintroduced some unsourced, defamatory content about the subject's supposed conduct during a strike (see diff here). Since you created this entry, I assume the reintroduction of these unsubstatiated allegations was unintentional. Risorgimento1871 (talk) 22:37, 23 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Risorgimento1871: Oh. I didn't even notice that. I was simply trying to restore the page to how it looked a while back before it was clearly vandalized. Help with an article[edit]

Hey PericlesofAthens,

I have been working on the Zhongshan (state) article; I found a great book that got me a lot of info, but I am not very familiar with writing strong articles about countries, so I was wondering if you'd be willing to check my work, and tell me what you think.

Thanks! -- Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 01:40, 29 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Iazyges: I think the article looks great! You've restructured it very well. However, there seems to be an abundant reliance on Wu (2017) as a source at the moment. I also noticed that before you edited the article, there were citations attributed to Di Cosmo, Loewe, and Shaughnessy (2007), Yap (2009), and Ebrey, Walthall, and Palais (2009). Was there a reason you got rid of these? Or was it just because you wanted to rewrite the entire article? Adding these citations back into the article would certainly balance things out in terms of providing a diversity of academic sources, especially since Wu's Material Culture, Power, and Identity in Ancient China is such a newly-published source (albeit from Cambridge University Press). Other than that, I think everything looks superb. Regards, Pericles of AthensTalk 02:09, 4 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Mostly what you've said about redoing it entirely. I'll see which of the previous sources I can use to add stuff onto. Thank you so much for looking it over! -- Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 02:24, 4 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mosaics of Delos[edit]

Hey, sorry for taking so long to respond; I was hiking/packrafting in Montana with some friends, and had [incorrectly] assumed I would have reception, but had pretty much none. I also changed the timing of my archives, as I had apparently switched it to one day at some point, presumably when I was around constantly. I have taken up the review, and should finish it quickly. I should be more available throughout the rest of the summer as well, as I have no other trips planned. -- Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 04:38, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nom[edit]

Would you mind if I nominated Ethiopian historiography for DYK?  —አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 08:53, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Janweh64: go right ahead! I'm glad you like the article. I've recently decided not to bother with DYK's anymore, after I was informed that I had to start reviewing other articles if I ever wanted to successfully nominate another one in the future. I have no interest in that, so I've been only relying on Featured articles of late to reach the main page (my two most recent being Sino-Roman relations, on ancient Rome and Han China, and Macedonia (ancient kingdom), the latter which is going to show up on the front page soon enough). So by all means, do a DYK for Ethiopian historiography and also possibly consider doing a DYK for my recently successful Good Article candidate Mosaics of Delos (about ancient Greek artwork). I plan on nominating Ethiopian historiography as a GA candidate and hopefully in the distant future an FA candidate too! I've noticed a lot of Ethiopian history articles being poorly neglected on Wiki. For instance, look at the sad state of affairs with Ethiopian literature. However, the article History of Ethiopia looks pretty decent. In either case, best of luck with your DYK! Regards, --Pericles of AthensTalk 09:04, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

FACs and possible retirement[edit]

Hello, Pericles. I hope this doesn't come across as an intrusion. I happened across your comment about retirement at the FAC on Ethiopian historiography and was saddened to see it. Wikipedia has been losing editors for a decade, but it's always depressing when another good editor leaves. It's very true that Wikipedia is less active than it was, and much less so than it should be, but I don't think the situation is quite as dire as you suggested.

FAC reviewing is hard, and to me, at least, it's miserable. Every FAC should be reviewed by at least one person who knows the subject well enough to recognize any gaps in coverage, weaknesses in the sourcing, and so on. Reviews by people unfamiliar with the subject are also important, but in any subject outside my ancient Egyptian wheelhouse, I'm very uncomfortable supporting an FA that hasn't had an expert look at it first. I don't know how many reviewers share that viewpoint, but I can't be the only one. Anyway, my point is that I'm not sure there are any expert editors for Ethiopian historiography, so it's receiving an exceptionally low level of attention. If you did nominate mosaics of Delos, for instance, you'd be much more likely to attract reviewers, because there are still some busy and knowledgeable classicists and visual arts experts around.

Right now I'm tied up trying to finish a rewrite of Isis that I've been struggling with for years, but I should be able to upload it this month (fingers crossed). When I've done that, I intend to ramp up my participation a lot, to try to pull my weight around here. I'd be willing to review your work—even Ethiopian historiography, if it's still stuck at FAC—once I reach that point. So I hope you'll stick around, and you'll have my help if you do. A. Parrot (talk) 04:31, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@A. Parrot: thank you for the kind words of encouragement. I'd be more enthusiastic and very buoyed by your words if it weren't for the fact that my most recently successful FA nominations, Sino-Roman relations and Macedonia (ancient kingdom), weren't also mired in such a slow, grinding process when they were submitted. This is not an isolated incident; this is a pattern, even if editors are staying away from Ethiopian historiography due to their inexperience and/or discomfort with the subject matter. I have no doubt that there are still some classicists around, but how many of them give two hoots about Greco-Roman artwork or mosaics in particular? I'm not sure how fruitful it would be to submit Mosaics of Delos at this point, not with this bitter taste in my mouth for Wikipedia these days. It seems like I come here for no other purpose than to work the graveyard shift removing occasional vandalism from the headstones in the cemetery. Sometimes it's even a welcome relief just to revert vandals on a page I otherwise thought wasn't getting much attention. I can't believe it has come to this, considering how things were back in the day when there were numerous reviewers happily willing to support or oppose my various FACs on Chinese history. I'd throw my hat into the ring as a reviewer just to bring a bit more balance to the scale, but that sort of role is simply not my forte (I'm great at producing content but not so good at critiquing it, especially subjects that aren't familiar to me). There use to be a small army of FAC reviewers back in the glory days of Wikipedia. Now most of them are gone, the saloon's been abandoned, and it's just tumbleweeds over there. --Pericles of AthensTalk 05:06, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Not sure if you still remember me (my old username was AQu01rius). I've returned to become somewhat active recently (not sure how long it will last, as the sentiment of missing the glory days is real). I am planning to the learn the tricks of FA, so I hope you will stick around too. Alex ShihTalk 05:11, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Same here, on both points. I hope you'll reconsider retiring. Wikipedia needs your participation, PericlesofAthens.  – Corinne (talk) 15:32, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I just looked at the Macedonia FAC. March 31 to July 22—man, that is terrible. Hard to put a positive spin on that. All I can say is that there are still good editors around, and we'd hate to lose one more. A. Parrot (talk) 19:07, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@A. Parrot: yep, and looking back on it, the FAC for Sino-Roman relations only took two months in comparison (February 2 to March 31). However, the Good Article nomination began on September 24 and ended on December 31, 2016! That was the wake-up call for me that something here was very wrong, and I didn't fully understand it since I had taken a very long hiatus from about 2011 to 2016 (busy with the Peace Corps and getting my postgraduate degree overseas). I hadn't realized that Wikipedia had basically degraded to the status of a virtual ghost town in that relatively short amount of time. Pericles of AthensTalk 19:56, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Corinne and Alex Shih: thank you both for your kind words, but it doesn't change the fact that the FAC review process is broken. If this was some abnormality that happened once then I'd be fine with it. This is now the third FAC in a row that has received a paltry amount of attention. There has to be some better way for the FAC process to attract more competent reviewers. I know that canvassing is against Wiki rules, but SOMETHING has to be done, otherwise this site is going to lose its remaining core editors, and I predict it will happen pretty fast. Pericles of AthensTalk 19:56, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of Wikipedia's systems need an overhaul, and that includes FAC. There is a small trickle of new blood around here, and if I remember correctly (I can never remember where to find the statistics), the number of active editors has actually risen very slightly since a nadir in 2015 or thereabouts. I'm guessing that FAC is slow to benefit because the tangle of rules and the extremely long reviews nowadays make it look too forbidding to attract new participants.
Iridescent suggested this reform back in March, but it didn't gain much attention at the time. (The comments the proposal did receive are also worth reading.) It would streamline all the review processes into one board, but with more reviews required for FA status. Importantly, it might help newbies to gradually become more comfortable doing assessments while seeing how higher-level reviewing works. I'd support the proposal if there were a vote, but is the crisis at FAC severe enough to overcome all the inertia that would resist such a drastic change? I doubt it. It would help to have some heavyweights in support, though... A. Parrot (talk) 20:17, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It would be really not good to see such a great editor like you leaving wikipedia. I hope you could reconsider seeing my image review just around 5 hours after nomination. I am not sure if I could have done a prose review too, because I have already done an image review on the article (I do not have so much idea about FACs, so I am unsure if one could do both reviews for the same article). I would also love to review the Mosaics of Delos when you put it up at FAC, so please reconsider your decision, as I would lose the opportunity of reviewing it if such a great editor like you leaves wikipedia. Is it not amazing that more reviewers came to the FAC immediately after you mentioned your retirement? :) I also would love it if you would give me a hand in becoming an editor like you, as if a veteran editor mentors a naiive editor, the learning process would be quick! Just look at the number of editors who would hope you to be around! Also, please feel free to tell me if you have any articles to be reviewed either for GA or for FA (currently you have none at GA and only one at FA which I have provided a review for), and I would almost immediately (on my next login most probably) jump to review it! So, I am sure you would rethink your decision. Adityavagarwal (talk) 12:30, 7 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There's nothing to prevent anyone doing an image review and a content review for the same article. I often add a sources review when I've done a content review. At the present time I'm doing what I can to speed up the somewhat glacial FAC process by clearing all the outstanding source reviews, the lack of which has been holding up perfectly promotable candidates for days, sometimes weeks. When I first engaged with FAC some 10 years ago, articles often were promoted within two weeks and were rarely on the page for as long as three. But there were more editors around then, and more enthusiasm. Also, I have to say, less quality; many of the articles promoted then wouldn't make it today. Brianboulton (talk) 16:06, 7 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Brianboulton, A. Parrot, and Adityavagarwal: thanks for the words of encouragement. I might stick around for an FAC on Mosaics of Delos, but I might do that a long time from now, especially after the miserable fact that no copy-editors from the guild bothered to review the article during the roughly three months or so that I had a tag there on the talk page requesting one (again, something that would have been handled within a few weeks back in the ole days of Wikipedia). As for Ethiopian historiography, I am also encouraged by the fact that Wiki users Casliber and Mike Christie have left positive reviews and offered their critiques and support. Ugh. There are so many critical history-related articles that require immediate attention, such as Nero and Slavery among the indigenous peoples of the Americas. If I come back to Wikipedia in the near future it would be to address basic concerns for improving those articles. I just lack the energy or time to do it these days, which I think is the universal problem for Wiki editors who signed up roughly a decade ago but now are too busy with real life to commit to anything on Wikipedia anymore. It doesn't help that this site has lost something like half or more of its regular reviewers and editors, which has slowed everything down to a snail's pace. A long-term problem[edit]

Hi Eric,

As your contribs mainly on IE & Central Asian topics, i want to let you know about ongoing disruption on those articles by a long-term sockmaster who has been actively socking for at least 7 years. I am noticing so many socks of that LTA vandal on multiple articles nowadays, here is the current one [1]. Other socks just banned this month[2][3][4]. Since the targeted articles are within your fields of interest and you have enough relevant knowledge on the topics, that would be nice if you take a glance at the LTA page and report additional socks when you notice them. Because, presumably it is a COI case, thus, the sockmaster is not an average vandal on WP. Due to the seriousity of the problem, extent of the disruption and countless sock tricks by the long-term abuser, a few editors alone can not overcome it thoroughly. Thank you. 31.28.41.96 (talk) 10:13, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey wanted to thank you for keeping cleo's page so nice, and teaching me how to properly wiki! How you currently have her ancestry section is perfect.

@Randyharrisonfan: thanks for the input! And thank you for introducing the ever prestigious Michael Grant and Stacy Schiff to the article. It is contentious, I realize, having other editors managing your contributions. I don't want to step on your toes at all, of course. It's just that the article is so damn big, slightly larger than my Featured article on Augustus, that I think reviewers will raise this complaint in the Featured Article candidacy. It pains me to remove anything from the article, especially since my new sub-articles (Early life of Cleopatra and Reign of Cleopatra) don't really get that many views on a daily basis, certainly not as many as the main page. That said, I'm very encouraged by your kind words here and with your help, along with that of editors who have offered their advice on the talk page, hopefully this article can soon reach Featured status. Best wishes and warm regards, Pericles of AthensTalk 08:06, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

cleopatra ancestry[edit]

gotcha. would you like me to change it back?

Looks good that way! I actually didn't know that wasn't Roller's original idea, but it makes sense since Fletcher's book was published prior to his (Burnstein's I have not read.) Adrian Goldsworthy also has great insight on Cleopatra (including her ancestry) in his scholarly works 'Antony and Cleopatra' and 'Caesar'. Also thanks, I'll see if it works. (I wish i could change my handle haha I made this account when I was a wee 13 year old child and feel it is REALLY silly now as a 24y/o) Randyharrisonfan (talk) 00:52, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Randyharrisonfan: Nah, you should keep the name. It gives you character! Don't betray your 13-year-old self (heh). Without changing your account name, you can actually edit your signature (in your "preferences" tab at the top right) so that you can use any name you want. For instance: "[[User:Randyharrisonfan|BadAssMotherFuckerWallet]]". Lol. You know, from Pulp Fiction. ;) Also, I'm well aware of Adrian Goldsworthy's works, in fact, just yesterday I saw him being interviewed in a documentary on Youtube. The guy is prolific. The only reason I haven't cited him is because I don't have access to any of his books and I do not intend on making further trips to the university library for this or any other Wikipedia project. I'm too busy for that in real life. Google Books is also of no help, since they do not allow you to see the exact page numbers from his books. If you can find something from his works, feel free to add citations, but please, no more input unless it's in a footnote. The ancestry section is already large enough as it is. I'm worried that someone will even complain about it in the Featured Article Candidacy page, which is now active. Pericles of AthensTalk 10:00, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I do have a copy of both book's, if you ever found information via google books and wanted an accurate page number! Also will do, always a footnote (he agrees with Grant Cleo's grandmother was Syrian, to start). I added a little tidbit from Schiff's book that goes along with Roller, but as you said the ancestry section is pretty puffy now (I edited before I saw this, sorry), so if it redundant or too much I undersntad. Congrats on making the article Feautured! It is well deserved! (and hah gotcha, I'll keep the name then!) Randyharrisonfan (talk) 19:30, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Randyharrisonfan: thanks for the message. From now on let us please put further ideas and citations into footnotes, because the section is fleshed out enough as it is. Pericles of AthensTalk 19:36, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Noted! As I finish up Schiff's book I'll see if there is anything of note not already explained in other sections or subarticles on Kleo that might be of use. My studies often keep me from "fun reads" (aka books I //want// read to read, haha) so my pile of Cleo works is high. I'll probably do Goldsworthy's next. (Also I decided my nickname on Cleopatra Selene II, my favourite hf ;3). Kleopatra Selene (talk) 19:40, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know if you yet know, but Roller is coming out with a new book about Cleopatra Selene, Cleopatra's Daughter: and Other Royal Women of the Augustan Era (Women in Antiquity). I hope is ok to post this here. I've already preordered the book and am BEYOND excited for it. Kleopatra Selene (talk) 04:24, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Randyharrisonfan: that sounds great! I wasn't aware of this at all. Thanks for sharing. Perhaps it could even be mentioned in the new article I created for Duane W. Roller. Regards, Pericles of AthensTalk 04:29, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That would be great! I actually e-mailed him the other day (I was actually surprised but very happy he e-mailed me back) with a few questions I had about his sources for certain claims in his Cleopatra biography. Very nice man, and I loved his dual historiography of Selene and Juba II. Kleopatra Selene (talk) 04:33, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image placement[edit]

Hi PericlesofAthens! Thanks for your edit at History of Medieval Arabic and Western European domes. Is the image placement comment a personal preference? I can't find it in the MOE and I have been placing images on the left below section headers a lot. AmateurEditor (talk) 14:59, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@AmateurEditor: Hmm...I remember reading about this rule a decade ago when I was a more active editor on Wikipedia. Perhaps the rules have become lax since then? Feel free to change the alignment back if you want. I was under the impression that images should not be placed to the left when they appear right under a section heading. Perhaps this rule is now outdated. Pericles of AthensTalk 15:12, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, if you think it looks better this way, I will leave it as is. I was worried I needed to go back and change a bunch of other articles. AmateurEditor (talk) 15:15, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ipigott: thank you for your thoughtful invitation. I am rather flattered! However, I am far more interested in editing historical articles about ancient Greeks and Romans (and even ancient Chinese topics) than I am about writing articles on women in general. Cleopatra just so happens to have been a woman AND one of the most important figures in ancient Roman, Hellenistic Greek, and Egyptian history. She deserved a better article and I'm happy to have made sub-articles for her as well. I also plan on rewriting and improving parts of the article on the 7th-century Chinese empress Wu Zetian, not necessarily because she was a woman, but again, because of her importance to Imperial Chinese history. Since I prefer to pursue niche topics on Wiki at my own pace and choosing, I will have to respectfully decline your offer. Regards, Pericles of AthensTalk 13:56, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure your planned contributions on ancient history will enhance Wikipedia's coverage of women. Thank you for your contributions to date and your detailed explanations.--Ipigott (talk) 16:00, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Really are you retiring?[edit]

Is it true? [5] That could be very sad. But it is completely understandable and I respect your decission. But know that... you will be missed. Your work however will be protected at all costs and it shall be an inspiration and reminder of how great contributors Wikipedia used to have in times not long gone. --👧🏻 SilentResident 👧🏻 (talk ✉️ | contribs 📝) 02:07, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@SilentResident: thank you for the kind words and for the assurance that my work will live on, regardless of my presence here. I've been mulling over the idea of full retirement for a while now. Even though my talk page says "semi-retired", for the past year or so I have been very active on Wikipedia, although not at the same level as in my glory days of writing Featured articles (i.e. 2007-2010). Unfortunately I can no longer sustain that level of commitment, as real life responsibilities and concerns will soon be eating up most of my spare time. I've had a good long run here and I can say with some confidence that I've reshaped and greatly improved several important areas of the encyclopedia (for instance, my various GAs and FAs on Chinese history). Even after going into full retirement, I might pop in from time to time to check on things, but I think the days of rewriting whole articles and creating new sub-articles will come to an end with my present project on Cleopatra. I will stick around for a while longer, perhaps to raise Early life of Cleopatra, Reign of Cleopatra, and Death of Cleopatra to FA status (hell, maybe even History of Macedonia (ancient kingdom), to match the FA status of the main article), but after that I'll probably bow out and pass the torch on to new editors and existing members who will be as committed to Wikipedia as I have been. There are still many other editors writing and nominating Featured Article Candidates and doing fine work in improving various history-related articles. I will retire with the comfort and knowledge that things are still in good shape here, despite the inevitable decline in the overall amount of editors found at Wikipedia. Warm regards, Pericles of AthensTalk 08:30, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Completely understandable. It was a honor for Wikipedia to have had members such as you. Keep up the good work for while it lasts, and if there is anything I can do, give me a shout. --👧🏻 SilentResident 👧🏻 (talk ✉️ | contribs 📝) 22:19, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I removed my comment at Talk:Cleopatra. I see that you have already basically answered my question here. It is a disappointment: your transformation of Cleopatra is probably the best work I have seen in my time on Wikipedia (I found it funny that your edit here, completely rewriting the article, counts the same in numerical terms as my edit here, simply replacing a hyphen with an en dash). I have planned for months to expand/rewrite Friedrich Hölderlin and other articles relating to German Idealism (including the main article German Idealism itself), but the interest in doing so fades further and further, and all I am actually doing is creating stubs for chess grandmasters, updating or making trivial edits to chess articles, and reverting vandalism on my watchlist, so I am not sure how you muster the motivation to write articles so large in scope for the benefit of readers who likely will never know who wrote what they are reading, but it is very commendable. Wikipedia will suffer a great loss when you fully retire. Hrodvarsson (talk) 02:33, 17 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Hrodvarsson: Yeah, sometimes I also wonder where I find the time to do that! Lol. Which is exactly why I wish to retire. Soon enough I won't have time to do much more than pop in every once in a while to revert vandalism, add images to articles here or there, provide scholarly citations for random stuff, and maybe amend some statements that I don't like in some articles. Perhaps the current "semi-retired" banner at the top of my page is sufficient enough to express that, though, since fully "retired" means never coming back, if I'm not mistaken. What I won't be doing, however, is writing huge new articles and sub-articles to boot. I might, however, continue nominating some of my "Good" status articles as "Featured" ones, after sprucing them up a bit to make sure they meet FA standards of quality. I might do that with an article like History of Macedonia (ancient kingdom) or even "Reign of Cleopatra VII". Regards, Pericles of AthensTalk 09:41, 17 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Legacy of Cleopatra[edit]

Have you thought about creating an article for the legacy of Cleopatra, as you previously have for the early life, reign, and death of Cleopatra? Векочел (talk) 00:21, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Векочел: I might consider doing that at a later date, but not during the FAC process. I'll have to see if I have enough material and access to enough secondary sources to warrant the creation of a new article about her legacy. Pericles of AthensTalk 03:35, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Some ideas for possible sub-headings (these are just suggestions) include descendants, description in Roman literature, cultural depictions, medieval depictions, modern depictions, and written works. This way, the information will correspond will correspond with the legacy subheading of the main page. Векочел (talk) 22:51, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Векочел: indeed, that is a sensible approach, although I would probably add a few more categories not discussed in the main article. The major problem here is the lack of sources at my disposal. I'd feel more comfortable making such an article if I could gather more books and articles, find more academic web pages on the subject. Perhaps I will do that in the future, during another trip to the library, but as of now I don't think I have enough sources to craft a brand new article. Pericles of AthensTalk 23:46, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Besides your local library, there is often information online. You might find information in Google Books previews. Векочел (talk) 01:28, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
