Re Category:Deprecated templates, etc.

- I've have put forward a proposal to rename (and repurpose) Category:Deprecated templates to a temporary holding category; see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2007 May 7#Category:Deprecated templates...
Thanks for your notification; having seen the generally unfavourable response, I thought I'd mention here that I've always taken the "Deprecated templates" category to imply your rationale (i.e. to be replaced/deleted) regardless of name. It's a useful reminder, though, to return to Category:Wikipedia templates' immediate subcategories... Hope all well, David (talk) 03:58, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
- Regardless of the outcome of the CfD, I'm very tempted to go through the category and remove / redirect templates that aren't in use where possible, possibly even creating a subcategory something like Category:Templates replaced by mediawiki functions. As it stands, the category just looks like clutter to me.
- Yes, this task is something that can be done regardless of the CfD – but I haven't dared look yet at what its magnitude might be...
- Also, I noticed FrankB's comment above this about the lack of a clear picture with the template categorization. It would probably be a good idea to put a page together somewhere that gives a rough outline of the aims of categorizing templates, as well as an outline of the category system. I would also like to go through Category:Wikipedia templates by subject, and try to put together a decent set of sub-categories for each of its' sections (again, as a list on some page somewhere). With luck, Category:Uncategorized templates should be filled up fairly shortly (see Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/UncatTemplateBot), and it would be good to have a decent category system set up before people (hopefully) start looking to categorize those templates. - I was and have been pondering this key issue while populating Category:Wikipedia templates by style, toying with the idea of Category:Wikipedia templates by task and trying to clarify Category:Wikipedia templates' contents further. I suppose it hinges on whether there's consensus over how folk are most likely to use Category:Wikipedia templates; whether to find which templates are used in a particular namespace or for a particular kind of task, or perhaps to browse different styles of templates, or to find templates relating to a subject area, etc, etc – in other words, which of the immediate "Wikipedia templates by X" subcategories (and perhaps a couple of the other current immediate subcategories) might be(come) the most used/useful. Whichever that might be – my first thought is "Wikipedia templates by subject area" – my current thinking is that its contents should populate the top level Category:Wikipedia templates while the other "by X" categories remain subcategories indexed under [space]. For example:

Templates
Hi Mike, Thank you for fixing the template stuff ! I wasn't aware of that a redirect will damaged the whole history. I realized that my templates add some whitespaces to the article, though this was my very first time I used conditional templates, so unfortunately I wasn't able to resolve this problem. So thanks ! And you're right, next time I will use sandboxes for that.
Maybe you could help me with 2 other problems. I realized that the space betweens linebreaks is much bigger than in the version without a template. Do you know where the problem is ?? The other is, I tried to categorized the template direct in Template:PyhsicsNavigation but it didn't work, I searched for something like <includeonce>Category:Physics_navigation_templates <includeonce> but didn't found anything. Is it possible to use a conditional template or something similar for doing this job ? As it will be easier to have the category stuff direct in the PyhsicsNavigation template instead of writing it separately for every new template ?? Thanks again !

- Hi Mike,
- please see GR history for the old version and the new version GR new which uses the PhysicsNavigation template. The line spacing grows by about 0.5mm on my computer,so that the whole template looks a bit ugly. I would prefer to shrink the line spacing even a bit more than in the previous version. Any ideas ?

unfortunately, predictable I suppose
re: this Now you can see first hand why I urge caution on changing things... someone obviously decided to rewrite Template:Wikipedia category(edit talk links history) and didn't give a damn whether a parameter was used or not. Sheesh! How professional!
- nope just youthful inexperience... seems to need a lesson in boolean operators. Certainly needs to use a sandbox for such overhauls.

re: This incident had the side-effect of reminding me about Category:Miscellaneous templates. Do you still have objections to me clearing that template out and deleting it? Category:Uncategorized templates can take over its job of an odd-template drawer - that category has the advantage of not appearing to be a permanent home for templates... Unused templates
Ah ok, thanks for the clarification. In general, empty categories used for maintenance should not be speedy deleted because it is difficult to judge whether or not it is in fact being used by anyone. It may very well be a good idea to delete the category but I'd rather see it go through the proper CfD route just to make sure enough time is given to verify that it is indeed unused. - Hello. I've recategorized all of the templates in Category:Ship navigational boxes into Category:Naval navigational boxes, and nominated the former for speedy deletion. The templates probably need further categorization into sub-categories of Category:Naval navigational boxes, but I'll leave that for someone who knows more about naval ships than I do. - Being a member of WikiProject Ships, I went ahead and started the process. At this point all of the Australian, Canadian, German, Japanese, UK, and US templates in Category:Naval navigational boxes have been shifted to appropriately named sub-categories. adminship
On a completely unrelated note: have you ever considered a request for adminship? I don't know your work around here so well but you've been around for a year and a half and you seem to be pretty active in various WikiProjects and at WP:TFD so unless you're hiding some kind of skeleton in your wiki-closet, I don't think it would be much of a problem. - Thanks for asking, but I've got more than enough to be doing here without the extra admin duties (and if I finish my current non-article-writing tasks any time soon - which is very unlikely - there's plenty more to do...). Also, with my current task (sorting through Category:Uncategorized templates), it would be very tempting to go OTT with the delete tool to get rid of unused templates, and that's probably not the best way to approach the problem. I'll bear the possibility of requesting adminship in mind, though; maybe I'll give it a go in six months or so. Thanks again. Mike Peel 22:36, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, do as you like. At the risk of insisting though, admin tools can be quite useful when doing all sorts of cleanup, from closing TfD discussions yourself to editing protected templates, having access to deleted pages (and figuring out the history of some complex mess), protecting sensitive templates, etc. The thing is: I'd rather see good trusted users with the sysop bit regardless of whether they intend to use it 200 times a day. - I've been thinking this over for the last couple of days, and I've come to the conclusion that requesting adminship would be a good idea - there are some things that it would make easier for me to do (as you say, editing protected templates, etc.), and I can also help out with some of the backlogs requiring an administrator (e.g. speedy deletions, thus adding a bit more variety to what I do here). My concern above about deleting unused templates was probably unwarranted; either passing them through WP:TfD, or turning them into redirects where appropriate, are proving to be the best ways of dealing with them.

So there's the official template, just fill in answers for the questions and transclude the page on WP:RFA when you're ready. If you take a bit of time to do so, it might be worth updating the edit stats on the nomination's talk page. That TfD
I noticed you closed that TfD on the Tolkien language stubs, and also deleted the category pages. I also noticed you said at the TfD that I was the main author. I was the creator of the category page, but someone else created the language stub template. I guess you could say that I found a half-finished stub sorting system, created the category page and started using the stub to label pages, but then realised how pointless it was and binned the lot. I used db-author for the category page, but TfD'd the template because I hadn't created it. If you think I should notify the creator, or want to yourself, that is fine. Equally, if you think the close is OK, I'm happy to leave it at that. Just thought I should let you know that I didn't create the template, but came across it while doing some tidying up. Category:Articles for deletion templates
Hello. I noticed you've been categorizing some of the afd templates into this category. Would you mind removing these categories from Template:Afd2 starter and Template:Afd3 starter (and other similar templates)? milesian school
hi, my name is Orit and i am a Spanish Hebrew translator. in a Spanish novel i came across a "jónic" school of phylosophy, and consulting the wikipedia in Spanish, found no link to an English or Hebrew equivalent. through the names of the key philosophers i have managed to track down the milesian school, thinking they are one and same. one of the wonderful things about the wikipedia (for a translator) is the possibility to go from an item in one language to the same in another. if indeed i am right and this is the same school (forgive my igonorance in philosophy,) could those terms be linked in spite of the different name? best, o —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.163.21.228 (talk • contribs) 14:19, 2 August 2007
- Hello. Technically, it's very easy to link the pages: put [[en:Milesian school]] at the bottom of the article on the non-English Wikipedia(s). For more information, see Help:Interwiki linking. The TfD notice was placed on the template only a few hours before the discussion was closed, thus disrupting Wikipedia's natural consensus building process as users watchlisting it could hardly have the chance to express their opinions about the deletion. Jodrell Bank
I enjoyed the article on JBO, so thanks for your work on it. I was looking at it as my father, who is 80, was remenincing about when he was a botany assistant at JB, and Lovell employed the botany assistants to put up posts, and to go on scavaging expeditions to airfields to collect electrical generators. Not got any independent verification of these stories but quite interesting. Maybe I'll see you in the Alan Turing Building?Billlion 09:33, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

- Hello. The reason I relisted that template was because it was nominated by an anonymous user (albeit one with a large number of edits), and also because the template was in use on about half a dozen images. In such a case, I decided that there was no downside to relisting the template so that it could be discussed further. The nomination also didn't make it clear what they wanted doing with the template; as such, I assumed it was up for deletion, rather than redirection. Had I thought about redirecting it, then I might have closed it - that's no big deal - but I tend to prefer to err on the side of caution with deletion. Mike Peel 09:52, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

- In retrospect, I should have deleted that one under housekeeping, rather than catempty. One of the issues I have with that criteria is that there is generally no way to check whether a category has been empty for more than 4 days, which is an issue I'll bring up at WT:CSD right now...

Infobox Planet and categorisation
Hi, yeah, just as I suspected - thanks for the confirmation and link. Moon has the "atmosphere_density" parameter that I was searching for, but no sign of it in the category... Now that I know it's not just something I did wrong, it'll save me thrashing around and trying to find out what's going on. :) Do you mind also pointing this out at Template talk:Infobox Planet?
