Whitelist
Thanks for your explanation on Whitelist. Is it possible to get out of the Whitelist? If yes, how to do it? Thanks John! Aceshowbiz (talk) 14:28, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
- If you mean that you want a site to be removed from the whitelist (so that it is blacked again), you could go to MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist, click on "Proposed removals" in the third line, and add a request to that section: but I see it says "Note that requests from new and unregistered users are not usually considered", so perhaps you had better tell me what you want done and why. Moved the page out - point to note
It is referenced - I backed up the statement about the conductor's background in contemporary music and left standing the tone that Wikipedia had already let be in their own article about Lou Calabro.
By the way, Sage City Symphony is listed in two existing Wiki pages and marked in red - I assume that means it wants this page to be made. On Calabro's page it is listed as the orchestra he started in 1973, on Marta Ptaszynska's Wiki page it is listed with the commission that she did for us. You need a couple more orchestras done for her too. Another of our composers who gave us a commissioned work has a Wiki page, Susan Hurley, though her Wiki page (and her entire focus re online currency) is in need of work.
One comment about the formatting for composers of classical music - it is the wild west in Wiki. Some of the pages have well-ordered lists of compositions, with good comment on the work, and some use the older in-line encyclopedia style with little musical dialogue. As a result it is not possible for all links within Wiki to turn up the same quality of information about classical works of music (contemporary or older). Wiki would be well served by finding an editor who knows classical music and could set up a template or two.
Finally, I want to mention something that is an increasing problem for everyone over here when it comes to retrieving older news articles. The trend is now for newspapers in their online presence to make customers register and pay to get to archived articles. Even if I popped in a link to older articles it wouldn't allow anyone to see them, and no one is microfiching news stories any more either so they aren't retrievable that way. That is the reason you are seeing a lot of discussion of past performances from liner notes of recordings on the composers' pages. Those links tend to stay around.
Anyway - the message says the page got moved out. Hopefully I am understanding this correctly. I am still not finding it easy to sort out these screens. Wiki has gotten a bunch messier since I did the internal one to document my SQL calls when I was working a day job.
Celia Murray Cemmur (talk) 21:16, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
- Taking your points in order:
- Yes, a "redlink" means there isn't an article there: if the article is moved into the main space, those will (automatically, no action required) become "bluelinks" and then clicking on them will take one to the article.
- Wild west formatting: that's the nature of an anyone-can-edit system. There is a WP:Manual of style with many sub-pages, and there are "Wikiprojects" such as WP:WikiProject Music which sometimes try to agree standards for their areas; but basically, the answer to anyone who says, "this should be tidied up" is, "fine, go ahead and do it!" There is no central organism called "Wiki" which one can ask or tell to do something - everyone is a volunteer, things get done only when someone has the time and motivation to do them.
- Paywalls - yes, a problem, and so is "linkrot", where links that used to work no longer do.
- Yes, the message on your talk page is from a "bot", an automatic system, of which there are large numbers doing useful housekeeping tasks. It tells you where the article now is, and presently you will get a message (from a human) to say either that it has been accepted and moved into the encyclopedia, or that it has not, in which case reasons will be given in or just under the yellow panel at the top of it.
- One thing that may happen when it goes live is that "maintenance templates" may appear at the top suggesting areas for improvement. If so, don't be alarmed, they put the article into various lists which may attract help from specialists in those areas. You should also not be surprised if others start to work on the article - I don't know if I have already said this, but it is a Wikipedia principle that nobody WP:OWNs any article. If you disagree with changes, the thing to do is discuss on the talk page and try to reach WP:Consensus - it's worth reading WP:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle as a guide to the way things should work.

No problem with others making changes
Thanks for the quick reply. I get it and would like it very well if someone saw ways to improve or jumped out from the wilds of Vermont to add stuff to the page for Sage City Symphony, especially some of the composers and older players who have paper materials in file cabinet drawers that haven't been cleaned up in 20 years. Musical groups were a bit all over the place too - I tried to hit the parts that would be most informative for someone new to the topic but am not sure I hit it. Re linkrot - I regularly run the external links on the organization's web site, expect that would be normal maintenance for anyone to do for Wiki pages as well. Thanks for the info on that group re musical entries. I'll have a while before they get this cast off my wrist so I might look in on the dialogue.

- How about making it somewhere else, and when you're done, post it. ~~Ebe123~~ (+) talk
Contribs 19:49, 4 October 2011 (UTC)- I have to delete it: for legal reasons we cannot host copyright material anywhere in Wikipedia, not even in user sub-pages or sandboxes, not even temporarily. Please ask your instructor to explain that to all the students, it is very important.
- If you want to take time developing your article, see Help:Userspace draft for how to make a draft in your own user space; but if you want to start with someone else's words and re-work them, you must do that off-line, not in Wikipedia; and minor rephrasing or re-arrangement will not be enough - please read WP:Close paraphrasing. - Yes, he keeps going - three more yesterday (I usually save them up till there are five or six before making another SPI report). But unless someone is willing to use their real-life details to make a report to the ISP, I don't see anything to do but whack-a-mole and hope he grows up; and even if it is against their terms and conditions, I am very doubtful whether the ISP would be interested. Have the abuse response team ever actually had any action from an ISP? I recall worse cases than this being discussed at AN/I where it seemed the ISP wouldn't do anything. Deletion of Adam fong page
I'm just writing to thank you for the quick deletion. I started this page and then noticed the capitalization error. I don't know if I have permission to delete a page so I just blanked it, started a page with the appropriate capitalization and explained why I did this. So thanks for the rapid response.Canticle (talk) 11:13, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- No worries. Only admins can delete pages, but if you blank one you have written, that's taken as a request to delete; alternatively, you can put {{db-author}} at the top. If you find you have created a page with the wrong title, you can "move" it to the correct title with the "Move" tab at the top of the page. That leaves behind a "redirect" which you can tag with {{db-r3}}, unless you think it might be a useful redirect (redirects are cheap, and redirects from misprints are sometimes helpful) in which case just leave it. Help needed for a student class project
Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Classroom coordination/SFSU Class Project and consider adding your name.
The scope of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Classroom coordination/SFSU Class Project is mainly concerned with new articles.
According to the teacher's instructions, this group of students may not create a lot of new articles, but may instead focus more on improving existing articles.
So, there may be little for us to do in the way the Wikipedia:WikiProject China/NNU Class Project required. The students may, however, still call on us for guidance in other areas. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:15, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
Needing some advice on how to proceed
Hi there
There has been "interesting" activity on a page that I frequently update and keep an eye on Iain Benson. A user, who appears to have changed his user name three times, added two banners questioning the neutrality of the article and the notablity of the subject. I have removed both banners as they called for discussion on the talk page and there was none provided.
More concerning however are the statements made next to the edits that remain in the edit history. The user states that Iain Benson is not a professor and asserts this more than once - although he reverted his own edit later on this possibly after having checked the references. He also claims that the article is for commercial promotion and that he is a minor legal figure, essentially advertising. I see these as borderline libellous comments as they remain in the history and are not backed up.
This subject is a personal interest area of mine, related to the area of religious rights and freedoms and their protection under law. I am currently developing an article on the South African Charter of Religious Rights and Freedoms and will be looking at further articles relating to this topic. The article on Prof Benson is neither propoganda, nor advertising as claimed. If appearing not neutral, it is most likely because no-one has had anything negative to say regarding the subject. It is written in a neutral style and has been upgraded to a C class biographical article meeting all the criteria for notability. Prof Benson is also included in the most recent edition of Canadian Who's Who.
Is it possible to have the comments removed from the article history given the aspect of defamation? Also, if this user decides to put up the banners again, what is the correct procedure?
I will also refer this to --Orange Mike but would apprecitate any help or advice here. (Ewooll (talk) 01:27, 15 October 2011 (UTC))

Dear John I was looking for a this page which does not exist any longer and from what I can see it was deleted by you?? My knowledge of Wikipedia is not great so maybe I'm asking the wrong person to restore the page. Before it had all his stats and data. Can you please restore his page. Kristinn Steindorsson is a well known Icelandic footballer. Player for the Icelandic U-21 national team and all time top scorer for his club Breidablik in Iceland's top division. - I am sorry for the delay in replying - I went on holiday the day you sent your message (which I have moved down from the top of the page to its chronological place). I am afraid that Wikipedia is not for what you want to do - it is an encyclopedia, and is specifically not for promotion of any kind, certainly not for use as an election notice-board. In fact, expressly to prevent use of it in that way, the policy WP:POLITICIAN provides that being an unelected candidate for political office does not provide the notability required for an article.
- As the article Damian Kettlewell was deleted by a process called WP:Proposed deletion it is automatically restored on request, but I have nominated it for deletion under a different process, WP:Articles for deletion, which will start a debate, normally lasting seven days, at WP:Articles for deletion/Damian Kettlewell, at the end of which an uninvolved administrator will decide what to do, based on the arguments put forward in terms of Wikipedia's policies, not on a count of heads. You are welcome to comment in the debate, you do not need an account to do that, but you should declare your interest, i.e. that you are the subject of the article. There was a bug in MediaWiki 1.18 that caused blocks made via the API to have talk page access disabled when it should have been enabled. This also affected scripts such as User:Animum/easyblock.js. - Sorry, but Wikipedia is absolutely not here for people to write about themselves or their businesses - for that, there are sites like Myspace and Facebook. This is a project to build an encyclopedia, it is selective about article subjects which have to show significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources, and we have strong rules against editing with a WP:Conflict of interest. The Rutgers Club
I do not understand why my article was deleted. The Rutgers Club is a historical landmark at Rutgers University, and the restaurant is a current dining option at Rutgers that is not covered by the main university page. Pages for other university-specific pages exist, such as the Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity page for Dartmouth. Why was my article considered less important than that article? CANE! page deletion
Hi JohnCD,
today I created a page for the band CANE! then it got deleted as you requested. I'd like to have an explanation for what happened. All the informations I wrote on the page were taken from CANE! official website (cane.boredyouth.org). I read why it got canceled (G11. Unambiguous advertising or promotion) but I was just wondering if I can still use the references from the band website, quoting them, or if I have to rewrite the whole article describing it from another point of view.
I'm looking forward to your reply
Thank you
- It's explained in the note I left on your talk page.
- Wikipedia can't accept material copied from elsewhere unless a formal copyright release has been made. Even if you say you wrote it yourself, we have know way to know that someone on the end of a wire is who he says, and copyright violations could give us big legal problems. See Wikipedia:Copy-paste and for the release procedure WP:DCM.
- But it's not worth doing that, because the band's own page is all jokey ("CANE! feeds on the flesh of young overweight virgins... occasionally it is found feasting on its own feces") and promotional ("a forward seeing and fantastic project"), but an encyclopedia article is quite a different sort of thing - neutral, serious, no opinions, just straight facts backed up by reliable sources.
- Finally, Wikipedia is selective about subjects - any article needs to show significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources, and the standard for bands is explained at WP:BAND - read that carefully, because unless you can show by independent reliable sources that the band meets it, you will be wasting your time.
- More advice at WP:Your first article. JohnCD (talk) 22:16, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
User:Demossoft
I observe that you have already warned this person about conflict of Interest.
This user has continued to spam articles by adding lists of books by the particular author Lina Murr Nehme. It is done in a rather sneaky manner. The references and links to the author's books are not added to the "Reference" or "Additional reading" sections but always to the "See also", and sometimes with the same book appearing as many as five times under different guises. All the links lead to the single page Lina Murr Nehme.
Are you and admin? There are so many of these references that tracking them down and reverting them is wasting time that I could spend more profitably on an article.
The problem is that since they are referencing an article that is within Wiki, it does not exactly fit the definition of spamming, although the intention and effect is the same.
Amandajm (talk) 02:40, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
- I hadn't realised he was still at it. I will take a look in a day or so and probably warn him again and raise a notice at WP:COI/N to get some more eyes on him. Thanks. JohnCD (talk) 19:51, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

- Wikipedia is not a notice-board for company announcements; it is a project to build an enyclopedia.
- If you work for the company, in writing about it or its people you have from Wikipedia's point of view a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and should read that guideline carefully, and also Wikipedia:Corporations and the Community.
- We cannot accept material copied from elsewhere on the basis of assertion of permission to use. For one thing, we have no way to be sure that someone on the end of a wire is who he says; for another, release under Wikipedia's license terms involves more than just permission to reproduce: it allows any reader to copy, modify, and use for any purpose including commercial, and it is essential that the copyright holder understands and agrees. Therefore, the procedure at WP:Donating copyrighted materials has to be followed.
- It is not often worth doing that, because the promotional tone of a company announcement may be unsuitable for an encyclopedia article, which requires a neutral point of view.
- Also, a company announcement alone would probably not be enough, because Wikipedia is selective about article subjects: the criterion used is called Wikipedia:Notability and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Myspace, LinkedIn, Facebook, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website, affiliated ones like his employer, and anything based on press releases. The test is, have people independent of the subject thought him significant enough to write substantial comment about? A company announcement of appointment as senior vice-president would not on its own be enough. There is more detail at WP:Notability (people) and good general advice at Wikipedia:Your first article.
- To sum up, I repeat my opening: Wikipedia is not to be treated as a notice-board. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 19:47, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

on CEO pages
Just to clarify, the Ryan M. Lance page is to note a significant person in industry. It is no different than http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rex_Tillerson or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_S._Watson_(Chevron).
Is it your intent that if we need to craft a page giving the history and life of the person versus started with the bio listed at our company? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ConocoPhillips6676 (talk • contribs) 22:07, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
- Please read:
- Wikipedia:Corporations and the Community
- The guide to writing WP:Your first article
- The general notability guideline WP:GNG
- WP:42
- What is needed is "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" to show why he is important and significant enough to have an article in an encyclopedia, as opposed to a site like LinkedIn. The notability question is, how do we know he is important? The answer, "His company's PR department says so" is not good enough. If he has made an impact outside the company, someone independent of Conoco will have written something about him - interview, profile in business journal, that sort of thing. JohnCD (talk) 10:21, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
Please see new information from User:Peter E. James in response to your closure at Wikipedia:REFUND#Angel (Company). There is a related discussion at User talk:Phearson#Help with a company page. Sounds to me that it would be reasonable to userfy the deleted page for the company person to work on it. The topic appears notable but it would take some patience to locate some WP:RS coverage and ensure that the article is neutral. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 15:46, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- Done. I have userfied the page. I am never happy with paid editors but this one seems willing to learn and Phearson is helping. I will add some talk page advice. Thanks. JohnCD (talk) 20:19, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
Good day, From: User: Interface Designer By education I am a philologist. I worked as an editor for several years, speak several languages. I am the author of many scientific works and think I would be useful for the wikipedia. Now I need you urgent help, please. Some of my articles are marked as speedy deletion by the user who is not an even a administrator, has a very bad reputation in WIKIPEDIA (see his history) talk and is acting as a Vandal. He does not appear on the wiki for years, then begins to remove all that he see on his way. That is called: Vandalism Take a look please at his history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Luthorsteele http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Andyjsmith&limit=500&action=history
This is my articles which he deleted without any talk with me:
Please help me and block this user as he is acting as a Vandal
Thank you very much for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Interface Designer (talk • contribs) 12:05, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
- Andyjsmith (talk) is not a vandal; he is not an administrator, so he cannot delete pages, but he is an experienced user who is doing the essential job of New Page Patrol. He tagged World Hosting Provider for speedy deletion because he did not believe it met Wikipedia's requirements; once tagged, an administrator, Nyttend (talk) looked at it, agreed, and deleted it - it normally takes two pairs of eyes to delete a page. If you are unhappy with that, Nyttend is the person you should approach. Andyjsmith put a Proposed deletion tag on World_Marketplace for the reasons he stated: you removed that, as you were entitled to do, though adding it was not "vandalism" as you said in your edit summary; the article is now at WP:Articles for deletion/World Marketplace and that is where you should comment, though you should say why the article should be kept rather than attacking other editors.
- Please do not make personal attacks. I see no reason why you should say tht Andyjsmith "has a very bad reputation in WIKIPEDIA" and "does not appear on the wiki for years". His contribution record shows that he has been editing regularly for years, and the New Page Patrol is a thankless task absolutely vital to keeping Wikipedia as a useful encyclopedia. Only deliberate damage to the encyclopedia is WP:Vandalism, and you should not use the word because someone disagrees with you about content. JohnCD (talk) 13:30, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for you help.
I agree with you.
I have one question: Do I have the right to prepare an article in my own folder? And what should I do to avoid being removed and not reported as spam.
It's bulk work. All the problems started from the bulk deletion of my articles.
And another thing: I now understand what to do. But could you kindly see World Marketplace article and tell me what is not good there what can be done to improve this article and bring it back into it's place. I'm not going to dispute with 3 users at 1 time. Most likely they can win.
Interface Designer (talk) 13:50, 28 October 2011 (UTC) Interface Designer
- Yes, you have the right to prepare an article within your own user pages, but there are some limits, explained at WP:User pages#What may I not have in my user pages? to what you can use them for. Advertisements, copyright violations, hoaxes, or personal attacks may all be speedily deleted even from user pages. It is useful to put
{{userspace draft}}
(two curly brackets each side) at the top of a draft article to make clear what it is, or to start one by going to Help:Userspace draft.
- The problem raised at the AfD with World Marketplace is that it lacks evidence of WP:Notability, a requirement for a Wikipedia article (because Wikipedia is selective, and is not a list of every product, company, record, band... that exists). Notability requires showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" - full definition at WP:GNG and brief explanation at WP:42. The AfD discussion will normally run for a week, anyone may contribute, and at the end of that time an uninvolved administrator will decide what to do, based on the arguments advanced in terms of Wikipedia policies, not on a count of heads. JohnCD (talk) 16:36, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
- See the comments that he's made at AFD and at many talk pages, including mine: apparently I'm attacking him because I know all the laws of Aikido, even though I've never heard of such a thing before :-) Nyttend (talk) 12:35, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
Peoplefone
Dear JohnCD,
I have no words about the request of deletion of the page Peoplefone...i only mention the mission and the shareholders of this company.
But ok, if you thinks it's a unambiguous advertising, please delete too the pages of vopium or 8X8 that are obviously advertising!
What is exactly the problem? maybe too much external links?
Instead of a speedy deletion to welcome me on wikipedia you could explain me and help me to avoid to create another unambiguous advertising!

- Many of our 3,500,000 articles are not up to standard, so What about that other article? is not an argument that is accepted - each article is considered on its own merits. The Peoplefone article was written in the first person and was obviously from the company: "Our mission.. thanks to our internet business model... We use the internet to reduce call access charges... " and full of marketing-speak slogans: "from the comfort of your home phone... Peoplefone takes you out of the tariff jungle... You get more talk and less blah blah!"
- That is an advertisement, not an encyclopedia article, which would be written from outside, describing the company in neutral terms, plain facts backed up by reliable sources. If you want to try again, first read:
- the WP:FAQ/Organizations
- WP:Notability and WP:CORP - you will need to cite references to significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources
- If you are connected with the company, WP:Conflict of interest
- Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide
- JohnCD (talk) 22:27, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation! Now I absolutely agree with your decision and I hope you didn't misstaken me about the exemple I made. I see those entries and i thought it would be acceptable to make the same, so I didn't expect a speedy deletion. But rules has to be respected!
So, thanks for your time. I'll maybe retry again in some time respecting what you have mention me!

Why betta belica wasn't a copywrite?
Now you may ask "Why isn't it a copywrite." My reason. First of all Iwrote King of the Asian Pond and I decided to put it on wikipedia. Second of all although the website is'nt 100% mine it is share by me and one other person, who gave me permission to put it on his blog. Also it was on my blog called" Betta World" and if you look hard you will find it. So to your suprise I'll bet it wasn't a copywrite. Beta123210 (talk) 15:22, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, but I have explained on your talk page that we have to be sure it's not a copyright violation, and just because someone on the end of a wire says they wrote it, that's not good enough. Read carefully the rest of what I wrote there. JohnCD (talk) 15:32, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Even if you could prove you wrote it we still can't use it unless you contact OTRS and have the text released under a free license. However, even if you did have it released, the text still had problems, the main one being that it was a blog post not an encyclopedia article. The best thing to do is write a new article from scratch. Take a look at Siamese fighting fish or Betta (the article Betta bellica currently redirects to) get a good idea what an article should look like. You might also want to read your first article. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 15:53, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
copyvio images
Thanks for deleting the printer pics just now. I have a real concern about the number of Indian university students who are uploading copyright text and images to Wikipedia. It seems that they aren't given the proper guidance - or they are ignoring that guidance. Because they are students I think they are given too easy a ride and are not subject to the same level of sanction as a regular editor would be. Compared with some of these students a regular editor would have been blocked a long time ago. What is your opinion? --Biker Biker (talk) 14:43, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, the whole WP:IEP is a disaster area, and there is a lot of concern - see WT:IEP and meta:Talk:Wikimedia Foundation - India Programs/Education Program. Students are being blocked, e.g. Special:Contributions/Swapnil.dahake, where they continue after warnings. We just have to keep plugging on, and try to scream loudly enough to ensure that nothing like this happens again. I'm afraid the Foundation have set themselves an objective Get more editors without considering that the top objective is Build an encyclopedia so that the subsidiary one should be Get more editors capable of helping build an encyclopedia. JohnCD (talk) 14:59, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. It is interesting to see that I am not alone in my thinking. Perhaps one more voice raising something at the village pump might make a difference. Then again... --Biker Biker (talk) 15:41, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi, JohnCD, and thanks for deleting the page User:Benzband/Status! I realize you must receive plenty of messages from people shouting " DELETIONIST " (but i'm just here to say thanks -having requested that deletion :) Benzband (talk) 10:35, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

John,
It would be nice if you could inform me what content could be added to make the page in compliance with rule A7 and give me a chance to edit it such that it would comply. Many articles about life science research products companies only discuss the company and its brands, and I don't see why a private company should be essentially deemed less important just because there isn't publicly available numbers on financials or a stock ticker to back it up.
Thanks,

The result doesn't seem to me too bad, and I declined Gaijin's speedy. I have also put {{subst:cclean}} on the talk page, which is a useful warning after copyvio has been removed. IBM product pages
Hi James, The page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Communication_Service_Enablers_(ICSE) - was deleted earlier. I have re-written the ICSE page in Sandbox - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Wikiuser164/sandbox. Could you please check if this is fine for posting on Wikipedia? I based this on other similar pages like IBM WebSphere - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_WebSphere. Do let me know if there are issues. Wikiuser164 (talk) 06:47, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not James, I'm John. Your question should be addressed to JamesBWatson (talk · contribs), and I will copy it to his talk page. But I will also give you my answer, which is, no, it is not fine, because:
- all your references are IBM, but to establish notability needs references to "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject",
- Wikipedia is not an IBM product catalogue, and
- as you work for IBM you have a strong conflict of interest, and should not be writing about its products even if they were notable. Leave it until somebody not connected with IBM thinks it interesting enough to write about.
- The Websphere article you cite doesn't seem to me any better, though it has been around longer: I have tagged it for lack of independent sources. JohnCD (talk) 09:48, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
Tci Network
Tci Network has been created and CSDed by multiple editors 4+ times now. The name needs to be salted. Additionally, I think the new creator is likely a sock of the old, since the content is identical. Gaijin42 (talk) 15:33, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

- To have a Wikipedia article it is necessary to show Wikipedia:Notability by means of references to "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". See also WP:42, WP:CORP, WP:BFAQ and es:Wikipedia:Artículos sin relevancia aparente. Also, Wikipedia is not to be used for advertising or promotion of any kind. vandal/csd user
Mr. Sam Ali (Vocalist,Writer,Musician) and various other titles repeatedly recreated and CSDed by User:Kingsamali In the most recent attempt stole significant content from another band's site to appear notable and have references etc. Is there a noticeboard for stuff like this so I am not just picking an admin at random? Its not really vandal, etc, so I dont know where to put it. Gaijin42 (talk) 19:10, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- No, it's not vandalism initially, but once explanations are ignored one can start to use uw-create warnings, and if re-creation continues past {{uw-create4}} then a report to AIV is appropriate. This one did, and I have blocked him. As to noticeboards, there is WP:COI/N if someone seems to be promoting themself or something else in a suspicious way that isn't actually vandalism. Why was my page deleted? Can I get it back?
Hello, I made a Wikipedia page for the Jigg Airsoft team. I just wanted to know why the page was deleted. Also, is there any way I can request it to be undeleted?
Thanks
-Brian — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bryman95 (talk • contribs) 22:08, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- It was deleted because Wikipedia is not Myspace, it is an encyclopedia and is selective about article subjects. The test we use is called notability and is not a matter of opinion but of whether a subject has had "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." See WP:42 for what that means. The question is, have people not connected with the subject thought it important enough to write substantial comment about? So, sorry, but it's most unlikely that your airsoft team will qualify. If you want it undeleted, the first thing to do is ask me; now I have said no, you can go to WP:Deletion review if you like, but read the links I've given you first, so that you don't waste your time.
- What won't do any good is just posting it again and again. It will simply be deleted, and sooner or later the title will be salted to prevent re-creation. JohnCD (talk) 22:32, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
a promotional editor
I see you've been one of the people advising User:MIchael Leeman with his articles. I have some general concerns with the style and nature of his work, and I've made a rather long post about them on his talk page; it refers primarily to cone of his current articles, buit it applies to his work in general. I think we've been much too easy-going with them. Please take a look at what i said, because you may want to comment, both in general, and about my specific points. As you know, I tend to support articles on companies and products, but to do this effectively, they have to be good articles. DGG ( talk ) 03:51, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
Youtube References
Are there any circumstances when it is acceptable to make reference to a Youtube video? A Ph.D researcher presented findings that are contained in a book that is referenced in the Wikipedia article that I wish to edit. Not everyone has access to that book, but a summary of his findings can be found in a Youtube video. I wish to add a line to the Wikipedia page that discusses his research, stating that "Unsolved Mysteries published a video illustrating some of his photographs and findings." The Youtube video contains a 5-minute excerpt of that Unsolved Mysteries episode in which his findings are graphically illustrated. Would it be copyright infringement for me to make a reference to that Youtube video? I understand that the Youtube user who uploaded that excerpt might have had to obtain permissions in order to do so. I do not know if he has or if he has not. Wouldn't that be something that Youtube and/or the Unsolved Mysteries publisher would have to address with the Youtube user who uploaded that excerpt (that is, if they do not already have an agreement that I just don't know about), anyway? Would it be copyright infringement to even point to the relevant Youtube video, as I wish to do? COice6 (talk) 03:53, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
- The policy page on eternal links is WP:EL. You shouldn't use a Youtube link as a source for WP:Verifiability, or for WP:Notability, but I should say that what you propose comes under WP:ELMAYBE #5 "Sites that fail to meet criteria for reliable sources yet still contain information about the subject of the article from knowledgeable sources." XLinkBot would probably revert any Youtube link you post, but according to User:XLinkBot you can re-revert it.
- Copyright is a more worrying issue. WP:ELNEVER: "If you know that an external website is carrying a work in violation of the work's copyright, do not link to that copy of the work. Linking to a page that illegally distributes someone else's work casts a bad light on Wikipedia and its editors. This is particularly relevant when linking to sites such as YouTube, where due care should be taken to avoid linking to material that violates copyright." It depends what you know or can discover about the circumstances under which that clip got onto Youtube. I suggest you post a question about it, specifying the link you want to make and as much as you know about the circumstances, at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems.
Speedy
Hi,JohnCD.Please help me.I'm in a tension.If this continue I may leave wikipedia.
- Will I be blocked from editing even if I place a appropriate speedy tag?
- Has anyone reported me to WP:ANI?
- If i simply patrol new pages, without speedy, will that be OK?
I'm really sorry for all that I did.I want to learn from my mistakes. Can I get a second chance?
- I have never vandalised, and have done every edit in good faith.
Please reply to this. That's me! Have doubt? What I done? 14:27, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
- You can look at WP:ANI yourself: nobody has reported you, but if you continue to add inaccurate speedy tags, somebody will. Qwyrxian asked you to stop, and so do I - you are making far too many mistakes, and that harms the encyclopedia because it is discouraging and confusing to new contributors. If you are interested in patrolling new pages, I suggest you (a) first read WP:CSD carefully, several times, including the "non-criteria" section, and WP:10CSD and WP:A7M; then (b) spend quite a long time just watching - look at a new page, think whether you would add a tag, and if so which, and then watch to see what someone else actually does, and whether an admin accepts that. Don't start tagging again until for some time your guesses have nearly always been right. If you don't understand why a particular tag was applied, you can always ask the person who added it.
- So much rubbish comes flooding in that it is easy to get into a frame of mind where your reaction to a new article is "How can I get rid of this?" That's wrong; you should be thinking, "Is there maybe the seed of a good article in this?" and only if the answer is "No" start thinking about speedy tags.
- There are plenty of other useful activities that will help you learn about Wikipedia: look at Wikipedia:Community portal for some ideas. JohnCD (talk) 14:52, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
- Another suggestion (I came here looking at Dipankan001's contributions): withdraw your request for rollback. You do not need to go faster. What you need, now, is to slooooowwwwwww dowwwwwnnnnnnn. :) If all you want to do is move at the fastest possible speed, you're not really in the right place. Huggle is a great tool, but really only appropriate if you are already good at spotting vandalism--and, perhaps equally as importantly, knowing what isn't vandalism. The thing is, with Twinkle, your speed is fairly limited, so if you make mistakes, it's easy to catch (for you and for others). With Huggle, you can easily revert a dozen edits a minute. This is why it is important that we be sure you will use the tool accurately.
- Finally, if I may make one more suggestion...try adding something to the encyclopedia. It could be a new source, some new verified information, or even just some corrections to grammar and spelling. Stopping vandalism, tagging pages, asking for deletions...these are all important, but, ultimately, the encyclopedia gets better when people actually make improvements. Working at the slower speed of editing will, I think, give you a much better sense of how to work here. Qwyrxian (talk) 15:34, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
Arrinera Automotive deletion: My thoughts
No problemmo. If you thought it was not notable enough then that is fine with me. I just thought that a company that is building Poland's first supercar was notable. There are also many other source that mention AA but i chose to use the minimum and most comprehensive CARBUZZ source. But i am not pissed off or anything. Maybe just a little disappointed.Fotoriety (talk) 04:56, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- It's not what I think, it's whether the article shows notability by references to "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". See WP:42 which spells out what that means. If you think you can do that, I have userfied the article to User:Fotoriety/Arrinera Automotive where you can work on it. JohnCD (talk) 09:34, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
Nah i don't want to work on AA any more than i have already done. If someone else does then good for them.Fotoriety (talk) 10:44, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- Well, it sounds as though there is possibly an article there. What I will do (tomorrow, because it's late) is move it into the Article Incubator, a place for articles to be worked on that aren't ready yet, and post messages at WP:WikiProject Poland and WP:WikiProject Automobiles to see if someone is interested in working on it. JohnCD (talk) 22:28, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
Cool. Sounds good to me.Fotoriety (talk) 23:13, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- Done at Wikipedia:Article Incubator/Arrinera Automotive in case you want to come back to it. JohnCD (talk) 21:59, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
I just noticed that on polish wiki they have an article on the venocara called veno. Do you reckon there is any way of transferring its info into the english wiki? and if this is done will it then allow the article out of the incubator? i know i'm being a pain: sorry.Fotoriety (talk) 02:26, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I see, pl:Veno (supersamochód). There probably are enough references there to satisfy WP:N, as long as they aren't all copies of the same press release. If we use information from that article, we'd have to attribute it, to give credit to the Polish authors, but there's a template, {{Translated article}}, for doing that. I haven't got time to follow up at the moment, but I have linked the :pl article on the incubated article, and on the two WikiProject talk pages. JohnCD (talk) 11:34, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

Is the JAT vandals gone? Didn't see one for miles! Anyways, it seems like the message was a success. Also didn't see a new SPI since October 22. This is a win on the counter-vandalism war! (Only if they are gone). ~~Ebe123~~ → report ← Contribs 17:33, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Deleted Backbone.js
Deleted for lack of notability? Backbone.js is the technology that all of the following are built on:
- LinkedIn Mobile: http://www.linkedin.com/static?key=mobile
- Flow: http://www.getflow.com/
- AudioVroom: http://www.audiovroom.com/
- Groupon Now: http://www.groupon.com/now
- Pandora: http://www.pandora.com/newpandora
- Trello: http://trello.com/
- BitTorrent.com: http://www.bittorrent.com/
You know when the economic bubble burst in Japan about 15 years ago that started the "Lost Decade" and executives threw themselves off the tops of buildings? That's what Backbone.js is doing to web application development right now. This morning, Backbone.js made most of my 10 years of web development experience obsolete.
Please, if you could explain a little more what made you say Backbone.js not a notable technology, and what *is* a notable technology by comparison, I would really appreciate it. Maybe you could also post a link to the deleted page (I didn't see how I could view it). Maybe the page was junk, but the technology seems revolutionary to me.

- Done - as a contested proposed deletion, the article has been restored on request. I will notify user Phil Bridger (talk), who proposed it, in case he wishes to consider nominating it at WP:Articles for deletion, which would start a debate, normally lasting seven days, to which you could contribute. Wikipedia's definition of notability, for any subject, is that it has received "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." See WP:GNG for fuller definition and WP:42 for an interpretation. You will see that the article is a one-liner which does nothing to explain why Backbone.js is important, and the only references seem to be primary ones. You are welcome to expand the article and add secondary sources; I will post a note at WT:WikiProject Software which may help to bring other interested editors. - Simple - rather than work on the one-liner I userfied for him, he simply created it again. Why he created it with a db tag on, I don't know - he must have copied the old one after it was tagged but before I userfied it. It clearly isn't an A3 any more, and from a quick Google it looks like a notable subject; also, for once from the IEP it isn't a copyvio! So I have just tagged it "unreferenced" and we'll see what he can make of it. JohnCD (talk) 22:57, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi JohnCD. Thanks for deleting the Ziddi razan article. Would you consider salting it too? The article was recreated after an AfD and has been subject to apparent sockpuppet activity. Speedy declined
Hello JohnCD. Regarding Huey Lewis & the News, a redirect I had requested to be deleted, you declined with the reason given: "target of redirect has not been deleted or tagged for speedy". I do not contend the target should be deleted but rather that it should be moved over the redirect, itself becoming a redirect to what is the correct and proper name and title for the ensemble. A search at Allmusic.com using the current title shows the artist not found[Hueyallmusic.com/search/artist/huey+lewis+and+the+news] with an option to choose the correct possible match [4]. I am fairly certain the redirect carries the title which should be home for the subject rather than to redirect it to an improper title. My76Strat (talk) 21:09, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
- Ah, I understand. You used the wrong db template, {{db-redirnone}}, "redirect to a page which does not exist, has been deleted, or is itself currently tagged for speedy deletion", and that's why I declined it. The one you want is {{db-move}}, which you put on the target page in the form
{{db-move|1=PAGE TO BE MOVED HERE|2=REASON FOR MOVE}}
. I haven't got time tonight to sort this one, but if you tag it like that someone will. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:41, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Hope to hear from you soon, Jeff The Foot. www.findthefoot.com
Jmactron (talk) 06:51, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
- Myspace, Facebook and the like are places for people and bands to write themselves up: Wikipedia is different. I deleted that article a year ago because it was (a) a copyright violation, copied from Facebook without any copyright release (b) as usual with articles copied from Facebook, written in a style far too promotional for an encyclopedia article: "sound that is immediately recognizable, with a novel edge that is certainly their own... original songs that provide an uncharacteristically deep insight... " etc. (c) an advertisement: "'available for download on their website and on iTunes... available at www.findthefoot.com with a name your price option, including a free download in exchange for spreading the word to others... " and (d) had no independent references to suggest notability to the standard of WP:BAND. So any new article would look quite different. More advice on your talk page in a day or two. - Yes, it's a useful page - WP:Copyrights is necessary, but it does make the eyes glaze over and not many people actually read it. I'm trying to use it to spread the copyright message into student projects on a bottom-up basis - after deleting a copyvio I add to the talk page warning: "Please read Wikipedia:Copy-paste and, if you are editing as part of a class project, ask your instructor to read it too and explain it to the rest of the class." Diminishing font
John -- Writing to you as my assigned mentor. I was editing the entry on the Battle of Jutland, tried to insert an en-dash by hitting control and the hyphen key on the number pad, but instead I got a reduction in the size of the font of the whole artilce. I then, of course, hit the combination again, and got a further reduction. I don't know whether it has just affected my view or the font of the actual article on Wikipedia. My apolgies. Can you help? Or point me toward someone who can? Both as to putting the article back the way it should be (if necessary) and as to avoiding the problem in the future. - No, you haven't broken the article, what you did only affected your view of it. The hyphen on the number pad was acting as a "minus" - if you pressed Control and the "plus" sign, it would increase the font size again. To enter an en-dash you type

Hi John
Another editor has looked at my article and it is declined. I have tidied up the refs a lot. I am new to this and just want to enter our local Church of England (as many other Churhes of England have) to Wikipedia. Please advise me where I am going wrong ?
Markst123 article about St Mark's Church England Markst123 (talk) 23:05, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
- I have explained on your talk page Wikipedia's inclusion criterion of notability, which looks for "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." See WP:42 for how that is interpreted. The test is, have people unconnected with the subject thought it important enough to write significant comment about? Your article's references are its own website, the sites of allied churches, a listing in "A church near you" etc - nothing that shows notability in Wikipedia's sense. That is in no way a reflection on the church but, as I said before, Wikipedia is not a noticeboard like Myspace where any person or organization can write about themselves, and has chosen this way to be selective about subjects for articles. Scrotum Poles page deletion
Dear John,
I note that you have deleted my page about the Scrotum Poles. The band are often bracketed with the Homosexuals, the Desperate Bicycles and the Television Personalities, so I cannot understand the deletion. They have been regularly included on Chuck Warner's Messthetics series including Messthetics Greatest Hits.
Could you advise me as to how to proceed.
Kind regards
Rachel
Rmcutler (talk) 18:40, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
- Your article didn't say they were "bracketed with" those others, only that they "followed" them, which I didn't consider an adequate statement of importance. I have "userfied" the article for you - moved it into a page in your user space at User:Rmcutler/Scrotum poles where you can work on it. You will need to provide references to confirm what it says, and to show how they meet the notability requirements of WP:BAND. JohnCD (talk) 22:59, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Deleted sanbox - user:krider07
Hi John, I am a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador for the Housing and Social Policy course that is participating in Wikipedia's United States Education Program. You deleted a student's sandbox the other day, citing that it blatantly plagiarized material. The student has the citations and was going to put them in, but thought that because the material was in the sandbox, it could sit there as she continued to work on the article. Would you please consider restoring it so that she can add the citations and finish this as part of her class project? Thank you for your consideration. This is the first time most of these students are working with Wikipedia articles. I, the other campus ambassador for this class, and the instructor are monitoring the content as well. We appreciate your vigilance for keeping inappropriate material off of Wikipedia. Thanks again for considering my request on behalf of this student.
Regards, Julie Jktanaka (talk) 05:55, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
- No, absolutely not. The issue here is not plagiarism but copyright. The material in the student's sandbox was a long passage copied from a textbook, "Housing policy in the United States" by Alex F. Schwartz. I explained both to the student and to the other campus ambassador that "for legal reasons Wikipedia cannot accept copyright material, not even in user pages, not even temporarily." If copyright material is to be reworked for an article, that must be done off-line, and always bearing in mind that paraphrasing may not be enough to avoid a copyright violation, as explained in WP:Close paraphrasing.
- Just adding citations to a lengthy copied passage is not enough to avoid violating copyright. From Wikipedia:Copy-paste:
Brief quotations of copyrighted text may be used to illustrate a point, establish context, or attribute a point of view or idea. Copyrighted text must be attributed and clearly marked as a quote. Extensive quotation of copyrighted text is prohibited even if correctly cited.
- I am very concerned that this has not been clearly explained to you in your briefing as a Campus Ambassador. Please read Wikipedia:Copy-paste, ask all your students to read it, and also ask whoever is your supervisor in the USEP to read it and explain it to other CAs. Copyright is a very serious issue for Wikipedia, and it is a considerable drain on volunteer resources to have to check incoming material for it. See WT:IEP as an awful warning: another student outreach program where the number of copyright violations has been such as to lead for calls for the program to be shut down, and where a major effort is going to have to be mounted to screen every one of its contributions. I hoped that the USEP would have briefed its CAs better. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 10:51, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification. I will reemphasize the copyright policy to all involved in this project Jktanaka (talk) 14:05, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
- Good. Sorry if the above is rather sharp - getting this vital message across sometimes seems like shouting into empty air! JohnCD (talk) 18:09, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
John, thanks for taking the time to explain this to us. I'm the instructor for KRider's class, and also learning about what the issues are in contributing to Wikipedia. The whole class as well is learning about how to use and contribute to Wikipedia. While I admit we were all taken aback to have the sandbox deleted, I do see from your explanation why you thought that was necessary.Rachel Garshick Kleit (talk) 18:01, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
- No problem, it's what I'm here for, though I hoped someone else would have done it already. It's worth reading (as few people do) the warnings below the edit box, to see what you are agreeing and committing to when you press "Save page". Wikipedia's CC-BY-SA license is (and as a free encyclopedia is intended to be) very broad, permitting copying, modification and re-use for any purpose including commercial, and there can be big trouble with the real copyright owner if that is done without their consent. There used to be a "bot", an automatic system, that did much of the copyvio-checking of incoming stuff, but owing to some technical problem with the Google interface it is down at the moment and the whole load falls on human volunteers. The Indian trainwreck is causing something of a backlash against student outreach programs, and it would be a pity to reinforce that, so it is very important to spread the word. Wikipedia:Copy-paste is a good, simple statement - please get everybody to read it, often. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 11:24, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Saturn (talk), who proposed it, in case he wishes to consider nominating it at WP:Articles for deletion. Note that per WP:POLITICIAN, just being an unelected candidate for political office is not enough to establish notability; you will need references to show notability independent of that. JohnCD (talk) 20:55, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

ACF
The Article Creation Flow mock up was quickly put together by Brandon Harris as a peace offering after he rejected the strong Wikipedia consensus to limit the creation of new pages to autoconfirmed users. That project, generally referred to now, as WP:ACTRIAL, was born out of a need to control the creation of new pages (rather than new articles) up to 80% of which will be deleted anyway, and which the current system of NPP can no longer cope with. Article Creation Flow is a kind of of hybrid of AfC and Article Wizard and is an excellent demonstration of how landing and instructional pages could have a far more inviting look, and provide a much greater user-friendly process for the creation of new articles by new users. However, as you have noted, development appears to have stalled for nearly three months and not gone beyond at the initial discussion at MediaWiki. Following initiatives begun in October 2010, the proposal for WP:ACTRIAL was well researched and the RfC subscribed by around 500 users that provided the clear consensus took place in March. At the general pace of developments of this kind, including their trials, if work was to commence now, it could take up to a furtherr 12 months or more before Article Creation Flow would finally be implemented. In the face of the current education programmes that will cause a desired increase in new articles, but also an undesired increase in unwanted pages, and the recent huge backlog at Articles for Creation, it is probably time to prioritise this project and start moving forward. It remains to be seen how this can now be begun in earnest. Its sister project, the NPP Zoom that is equally important, is also moving at a slow tempo, and early this month I devised and initiated a survey in an endeavour to speed up and address the issues of NPP more directly. It is not known yet how, and by whom, the data from that survey will be used once it has been analysed and summarised by the WMF. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:58, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I read the ACTRIAL refusal, one of the most depressing things I have read since I joined. On that basis, I expect my idea will be refused too - "mustn't discourage Myspacers and spammers - why not improve schoolyard gossip and advertisements instead of deleting them?" Bah! - Thanks for the clarification. I didn't get what had gone on, obviously, but that makes sense. -Fenevad (talk) 23:58, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
Steve at Mexifornia clothing,
not sure why you took my page down but put it back up ASAP.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.43.26.156 (talk) 04:38, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
- I have restored the article Mexifornia clothing because it was deleted by the Proposed Deletion process which is automatically reversed on request; but you should understand that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a business listing directory and certainly not a free advertising noticeboard, and in writing about your own business you have, from our point of view, a WP:Conflict of interest. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for more advice. I have notifed user OSborn (talk), who proposed deletion, in case he wishes to consider nominating it at WP:Articles for deletion, which would start a debate lasting normally seven days to which you could contribute. Derogatory redirect
I was just noticing that you have deleted the offensive redirect "Porkistan" two times before (the most recent being in October 2011), and that it has been created on a total of seven occasions. Instead of having to delete it everytime someone creates this redirect, isn't there a way to permanently block the creation of this page, so as to prevent users from recreating it? I'm sure there must be a way to do that. Mar4d (talk) 05:21, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, create-protection or "salting" is possible, but we are reluctant to use it pre-emptively (see WP:Protection policy) and I don't feel this gets created often enough to warrant it. Feel free to apply at WP:RFPP if you disagree, but I think you will get the same answer. If you like, you can "watchlist" it so that you will see if it gets created again (to do that, click on the red-link and then on the page "Editing Porkistan" click the white star just left of the search box so that it turns blue). If it appears again, tag it {{db-attack}}. JohnCD (talk) 08:51, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
Vandalism by User:119.30.38.34
Hello JohnCD,
I have noticed the IP 119.30.38.34 has been vandalizing articles such as Shah Amanat International Airport recently. I cleaned up the mess he made but he kept on vandalizing it again and again.
I checked out his User Talk and I learned that he has already been warned several times and also temporarily blocked from editing in March '11 (by you). I think he should he should be blocked permanently. Please take action against him.
Thanks.
--Zahir (talk) 11:59, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
- We do not normally block IPs for long periods unless it is clear that they are static, i.e. not likely to be reassigned to someone else. You did the right thing by giving him a #3 vandalism warning, and it seems to have stopped him. The place to report vandals is WP:AIV which is watched by many admins, but see the notice at the top of that page: vandalism must be recent and must normally have continued after a final warning. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:09, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information. I don't really know what to do in vandalism cases

Page Deletion 'Original Cherry Assassins.'
Hi there.
Just querying why this page was requested for deletion. As both manager and band member, i feel it wholly inappropriate to request deletion under the request as to why it is important or significant. The band in question have played in many local and regional venues, and are lined up to play a few of the major uk festivals this year, and the page was created to allow people to know more about the history of where the band came from, not in a sense of self promotion. As many other bands are currently on wikipedia in a similar sense, from major ones to fairly minor ones, i feel that the deletion of this article is unfair. There was no inappropriate content, nor anything which wasn't verifiable (if a request for citation had been placed on the account), and i feel that removal for the sake of claiming unimportance was wholly unjustifiable. Wikipedia, as a majorly important tool of knowledge to many, of which i include myself when wishing to find out more about something, shouldn't be censored in such a fashion unless it could be proven to have inappropriate content, or anything which cannot be proven...and i feel that i should bring it to your attention.
I'm not meaning it in a nasty sense, but something which could be considered colloquially important in one area of the world shouldn't be told by someone on the other side of the planet it was unimportant or insignificant, and i would much rather you had brought any grievances to me before deleting the article, as we have had a few queries to ourselves about the history of the band and where our music originated, which would have been better served by having the page to refer people to.
I'd appreciate the reinstatement of the page, or at least a comeback to my points i've referred to if it wouldn't take up too much of your time...
thanks J. McVeigh

Following your previous message...there are a plethora of bands currently on wikipedia which do not at present meet the criteria of which you have linked to, but yet still remain online.
Furthermore, we have been featured in two uk music magazines (ie proper review and one 2page interview, not just gig listings), as well as having played the opening weekend of this year's edinburgh festival, and are on the set for this years tbreak tent at 't in the park' so i feel there is a perfectly valid argument for inclusion.
0807733m (talk) 15:56, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
- Many of our 3,800,000 articles are substandard, and so What about those other articles? is not an argument that is accepted - each onee is considered on its own merits. If your article were restored as it is, it would just be deleted again. I will "userfy" it - move it into a user sub-page where you can work on it to show how it meets WP:BAND. Link and advice on your talk page later today. JohnCD (talk) 17:27, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

You have deleted my Wiki page 'Solarstone'
Hello John
I'm not sure why but you have deleted our Wikipedia page for 'Solarstone' citing 'unambiguous copyright infringment from the page http://www.solarstone.co.uk/about
How we could be infringing our own copyright by pasting content from our own website to our own wiki page is beyond us... could you please reinstate the page with immediate effect. Gareth Solarstone / Solaris Recordings 77.100.229.85 (talk) 09:38, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) First, if you work for the company, you should not be trying to create a page for them, per WP:COI. Second, it doesn't matter if you own the copyright--Wikipedia requires that all content be in the public domain or in a "free" copyleft format, like CC-BY-SA. If you want, there is a way to donate the material to Wikipedia...but the truth is, it's probably not worth the effort, because after looking at that page, it isn't appropriate for Wikipedia for far more fundamental reasons than just the copyright. Wikipedia articles shouldn't read like press releases or corporate pages; instead, they should be a neutral summary of information printed in reliable sources about subjects. Looking at the deleted articles (admins can still see deleted articles), I note that there are no references of any type whatsoever, or anything to verify that the company is notable--i.e., has been discussed in detail in multiple reliable sources.
- So, we can't re-instate the page, as that would be a copyright violation. But even if you solved that, the page should still be deleted until such time as a neutral page based on reliable sources can be written. Qwyrxian (talk) 11:29, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
deleted record Pete Seeger album titled "Pete"
RE: deleted record (1/11/11) of Pete Seegers titled "Pete" from 1996.
Hello JohnCD - I visited Wikipedia tonight to get the personnel information and other info about Pete Seeger's excellent record "Pete" and found it had been deleted.
This is a legitimate album, in fact it is currently available on Amazon.com although I didn't note what label it's on. The copy I have is from 1996 and on Earth Music Productions based out of Litchfield, CT, USA (zip code 06759). The distributer was Living Music. The ID # (probably wrong terminolgoy) is LMUS 0032.
The songs were primarliy ones that Pete had in his notebooks but never got around to recording, and about half of them feature choruses such as THe Union Baptist Church Singers, a group called Gaudeamus and The Cathedral Singers. It includes some excelent protest songs such as "Garbage" and "My Rainbow Race" and two beauties: "The Water Is Wide" and "Russian Song / "Ode To Joy". But the whole album is good (and I'm not really even his biggest fan).
Not being real savvy, I don't know if I missed any other info you'd need but wanted to say that it really shouldn't be deleted... Thanks.

- The page Pete (album) which I deleted wasn't about the Pete Seeger album at all - it started:
"Pete is the upcoming eighth album by the gothic metal band Type O Negative. It is the first release since former lead vocalist and bassist Peter Steele's death in April 2010, whom the album is named after."
- and was deleted because no confirmation of its existence could be found - probably a hoax article, its author has been blocked for creating other hoaxes. JohnCD (talk) 18:59, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Felicia Lamport Kaplan
Hi there. I see that "a page with this title has previously been deleted... 20:30, 25 October 2010 JohnCD (talk | contribs) deleted "Felicia Lamport Kaplan"
I wonder do you recall the reason for deletion and whether or not any new page would be likely to succeed? Many thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:27, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
- I deleted the page Felicia Lamport Kaplan because it was simply a redirect to Felicia Lamport, a page which didn't exist (and never has). A quick Google suggests that there might well be enough sources for an article about her, and that "Felicia Lamport" would probably be the better title for it; if you write the article, you could restore the redirect from the other title. JohnCD (talk) 19:18, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I may well do that if I can find the time. It's a shame that a "reason for deletion" could not be logged in some way when articles/ re-directs are deleted. But thank you for explaining. From my own brief researches I couldn't tell if Felicia Lamport Kaplan was, in fact, her legal married name, or not. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:25, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
- The deletion log does give a brief reason - if you click on the redlink you'll see "G8: Redirect to a deleted or non-existent page" - though it doesn't tell you whether the target page ever existed and if so why it was deleted. I don't know whether "Kaplan" was a legal married name: I suggested "Felicia Lamport" as a title because Google suggests that was the name she was best known by as a writer. JohnCD (talk) 19:35, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
- Yes it does, no it doesn't and yes it does (in that order)! Thanks again. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:38, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
- Have now quickly thrown one together, but would much appreciate a second look. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 23:01, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
- Looks good - well done. I have restored the redirect from the Kaplan name. JohnCD (talk) 12:09, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

My Page ' GK Sanghar' has been re-edited with changes that you Advised!
Hi John,
I have re-edited the page I created for GK Sanghar. I have looked at your comments and realized that there may have been some parts to the contents that showcased subjectivity. So I have removed all subjective information and kept a more neutral approach. The article is properly referenced as the person is my client and I am her Manager. She is a local news personality and whatever information that is distributed is released by her Manager directly into the public domain for accessibility to her well-wishers.
However, I don't understand why the article name has been changed from GK Sanghar to G.K. Sanghar. Initially, there was a older wikipage once created. However, the information on that site lacked proper references and inadequate information. The names of article page should be restored to GK Sanghar.
This is the actual biography of a real person. References have been added and citations are non-subjective. The published work of the person has been referenced to avoid plagiarism by other parties only.
I hope you receive this message and pass the approval of this authenticated page created not for the purposes of publicity or commercial interests, but to allow for an avenue of credibility of the person and her work, and to share objective details of the person with her well-wishers.
Please allow the progression of the page.

Azim Wardak
Hi John. I see that you've undeleted Azim Wardak but I really why this shouldn't still be considered as a BLPPROD candidate. When I placed the tag a couple of weeks ago, I tried to find decent online sources and couldn't find significant coverage. Sure, I was able to confirm indirectly that he was a high-ranking employee of Afghanistan's ministry of commerce but from vague primary sources. Consider the fact that currently, the sentence
- He was able to hold office throughout this period thanks to his professional skills and the good relations that he built with his international collaborators
is supported by a reference that simply states that he was one of dozens in attendance to the Second Annual U.S. Afghanistan Trade And Investment Council Meeting. And the sentence:
- He has been a great promoter of the WTO in Afghanistan in order to open the Afghan market for its economical and social growth.
is supported by a reference that only lists him as a participant of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. In other words, there isn't a single sentence in that article that is supported by a reliable source. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 22:01, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
- The first reference confirms that he was President of International Trade at the Ministry of Commerce and Industries, and I think that is enough to get past the fairly low threshold of BLPprod, which requires only "the presence of at least one reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the biography." No prejudice to PROD or AfD if you think he is not notable, or trimming the article back to remove uncited claims. JohnCD (talk) 22:10, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
- Fair enough. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 22:24, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

I agree that this page was unneeded, but I was surprised to find it deleted entirely, since I don't remember the entire content to be from the site listed. But I havn't yet tracked down the discussion (is my eye missing something at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Archive_debates/2011_February_index?). Would you consider restoring at least the talk page with the merger discussion, and do something to make the links here into redirects? Sparafucil (talk) 21:57, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
- There wasn't a discussion - it was speedy-deleted as a copyright violation, a straight copy of http://www.medieval.org/emfaq/misc/lamentations.htm. I looked back through the history to see whether there was a non-infringing version, but the same text was there from the first entry in Nov 2006 - all the subsequent changes were mere tweaks like categories and maintenance tags.
- Evidence that it was copied from medieval.org, rather than their copying it from us, is that their article has the author's name, François Velde, at the bottom, but in our version this name got added to the list of German composers, after Krenek.
- The talk page only contained a WikiProject Catholicism template, and a note pointing out that the article was a copyvio.
- I think the redlinks should stay, to encourage someone (you?) to write a non-copyvio article. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:43, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
- ...or should any useful material from this be added to Lamentations of Jeremiah the Prophet, citing the medieval.org article as the source, and the redlinks be altered to point to that? JohnCD (talk) 22:42, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the refresher; I must have misremembered the talk page. Lamentations of Jeremiah the Prophet was originaly so titled to refer specifically to English settings, but is the best target for Tenebrae music. Sparafucil (talk) 20:38, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
PennSthersheypaz
Good Morning,
Back in June we created a page for Harold L. Paz, which was deleted (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Harold_L._Paz&action=edit&redlink=1) of copyright infringement http://pennstatehershey.org/web/guest/home/aboutus/leadership/paz. Dr. Paz, is our Dean of Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey. He has revised his bio and I was wondering if I can create a page without it being deleted again.
Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pennsthersheypaz (talk • contribs) 12:55, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
- There are several issues here:
- If the material has already been published, on the University website or elsewhere, Wikipedia cannot accept it without a formal copyright release. Assertion of authorship or of permission to reproduce is not enough; for one thing, we have no way to be certain that someone on the end of a wire is who he says, and for another release to Wikipedia involves much more than permission to reproduce, Wikipedia's CC_BY_SA license allows anyone to copy, modify, and use for any purpose including commercial, and it is essential that the copyright holder understands and agrees to that. The method of making a copyright release is described at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- It is not often worth making a copyright release, because material written for another purpose is seldom suitable - Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a notice-board. (You may find User:JohnCD/Not a noticeboard helpful).
- You say that Dr Paz "has revised his bio", but Wikipedia articles written by their subjects are strongly discouraged, for reasons explained at Wikipedia:Autobiography
- Another reason why a simple copy of a University announcement or website would not be sufficient is the need to demonstrate Wikipedia:Notability, a requirement to have a Wikipedia article, which is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by citing references that show "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject."
- Dr Paz as the subject, and you if you are associated with him, have from Wikipedia's point of view a WP:Conflict of interest. That need not prevent you from editing, but you need to be careful, and follow the guideline WP:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest. I sggest that you read WP:Your first article and then make a draft in your "user space" - see Help:Userspace draft for how to do that. If you do that, the page that is created will have a link to more advice, and a button with which to submit it when it is ready, when independent users will review it. Deleted My Page
Hello
Created a page for the Onondaga Ogres football program. Page was deleted for notability. This club was the first football program for the students of Onondaga Community College in the fifty year history of the school. We were covered in the Syracuse Post Standard and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) following a game against Alfred State College. In the 2012 season we will be an official NJCAA Club program and be acting as its varsity representative. I began the entry in wikipedia as a starting point that was to be expanded on in the coming days. If you could reinstate the page it would be helpful and I will do my best to update it as quickly as possible with relevant content.

Deleted album article
Who are you to unilaterally delete someone else's article? There are articles about completely unreleased albums, but one that was released and sold over 30,000 copies has no significance? No doubt this is because it was a Christian album. What are your specific objections? The Moody Blue (Talk) 01:43, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
OK, I just read on your page how this happened-sorry. I have had trolls vandalize edits and such before that had a very anti-Christian bias. This article is notable because the musician who recorded it is. David Persons was one of the Austin "Wrecking Crew" in the late 70's and early 80's. He played a lot of session work, as well as toured with Neil Diamond, Jimmy Buffett and numerous others. This is his only solo album until later this year. He is notable and was a well known studio musician. Simply because no one has written a wiki article about him does not mean he isn't notable. I was looking for a link to his album and realized there wasn't an article for it, so I added one. It should stand.
Once again, sorry about the hissy fit earlier, I didn't realize you were responding to a bot. The Moody Blue (Talk) 01:52, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I need to correct my earlier message - I left out a 0. It should have read 300,000 copies. Sorry. The Moody Blue (Talk) 02:03, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- I presume this is about This Is A Recording (David Persons Album). The notability standard for albums is at WP:NALBUMS: "An album requires its own notability, and that notability is not inherited and requires independent evidence." NALBUMS goes on to say that the artist does not need to be notable if the album meets the general notability guideline, but that is an unusual situation, so that WP:CSD#A9 permits speedy deletion of an album article if the artist has no article and there is no indication of importance or significance. In this case the only source cited was a download link - no evidence of significant independent coverage or recognition.
- The fact that it is a Christian album was not apparent from the article, but in any case has absolutely nothing to do with anything - it is not a reason to delete, nor is it a reason to keep.
- If you think that Persons is notable to the standard of WP:MUSICBIO, I suggest you start by writing an article about him, but it needs reliable sources - "Persons has been rumored to be working on a new album" isn't for Wikipedia. In particular, notability is not a matter of saying so, but of showing significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. JohnCD (talk) 13:02, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- So I need to write an article about Persons as well. Well, since it hasn't been done (which mystifies me a bit) give me a week or so to write one before you delete the album article. I see your point with the absence of an artist article, so I will try to get that corrected. Persons is also listed on IMDB from a childhood network television appearance ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0282266/ ). I will get the article together. Some of the interviews and such I may use are not found on the web, as they were done in the 1980's before the web was really around, but I will document the print sources. Please give me a fortnight before you delete the article and I will get the artist article done to de-orphan this article. Thanks! The Moody Blue (Talk) 19:52, 22 January 2012 (UTC) (PS - I trust you got the follow up messages I sent after I read your page. The first message was before I read it.)
- I have userfied the album article for you - moved it into your user space - to User:Themoodyblue/This Is A Recording (David Persons Album). If you post it again now it would just be deleted again. Even after Persons has an article, the album article would need independent evidence of notability, in the form of independent comment about it - failing that, a mention in the artist's article is the way to treat it. (I know there are a lot of tracklist-only album articles lying about, but see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS). You may find advice or help at Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums. Yes, I read the second part of your message, but even after your apology I still thought "No doubt this is because it was a Christian album" needed some response.
