Question regarding sources[edit]

Hi Ian,

Hope you are well! I have a quick question regarding sources. Can I reference a source in Spanish if I’m editing an article on Solar PV in Mexico which is in English? And if I find a source which is no longer there can I remove it? Lucia.yates (talk) 15:46, 6 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Need help regarding moving out of sandbox[edit]

Hello Ian,

I am looking for the "More" option to move out of my sandbox. However, the tabs at the top are "Read", "Edit Course, "View History", and a star. I was wondering if I am looking at the right page and how I can find that more option. Thank you so much! --Mahta Amanian (talk) 22:08, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Citations in Introduction[edit]

Hi Ian, I am new to editing Wikipedia and just finished reading "Editing Wikipedia" and "Evaluating Wikipedia". I am a little confused by which statements need to be cited and which do not. I have been looking through many of the featured articles on Wikipedia and have found that some of those articles have relatively few or no citations in their intros[1][2][3], despite times where I felt a citation would've been necessary. Could you help me clarify what needs to be cited in the intro and what does not? Thanks so much!

Article Evaluation[edit]

I read up “Center for Neighborhood Technology” on Wikipedia and found that it was the only page that talked about this organization.. This is something we have briefly talked about in class, but not too in-depth on this specific organization. More like non-profits that are similar in their cause. The way the article is laid out is almost as if it was pulled form a textbook. There are no real world examples of how this organization has helped better the community. When we talked about non-profits that are comparable in class, the conversation was centered on a real like example.

The page could be taken as a credible source for the organization, mainly because there are citations, linked news articles about the organizations progress and photos. There is one article referenced at the very bottom of the page under references, but is not cited anywhere on the page. There are various grammatical errors, but that can be easily fixed.. The viewpoints on this page are very underrepresented, and can be further expanded. Overall, the tone of the page is neutral, because it is meant to be more scholarly as opposed to being opinionated.

Would the following be good references?[edit]

Hi Ian,

I am thinking of editing the Bioremediation page and came up with a few sources that I would like to use. However, I went through the citations module and was not sure if I would be able to use these.

https://frtr.gov/matrix2/section4/4-2.html https://frtr.gov/matrix2/section4/4-31.html https://clu-in.org/techfocus/default.focus/sec/Bioremediation/cat/Aerobic_Bioremediation_(Direct)/ http://www.cpeo.org/techtree/ttdescript/ensolmx.htm

Also, I have read the 'talk page' of the Bioremediation article to see what other editors think. I came across an editor's post proposing major changes to the article and highly agreed with his outline. Part of that outline contained a suggestion for an Aerobic Bioremediation section which is what I am thinking of contributing towards. However, would I need to message the editor and tell him that I will be adding that?

Thanks! Lizhuang97 (talk) 03:46, 25 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

password recovery problem[edit]

Ian, I have a student "Majorkeyalert" who forgot his password and is not getting the reset emails. Is there anything we can do for him or should he just create a new identity and start over? Jparcoeur (talk) 12:57, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Jparcoeur: - unfortunately, he either didn't set up a recovery email with Wikipedia (which is distinct from what he set up with the Dashboard) or he didn't respond to the confirmation email. Either way, there's no other way to re-set things. So the best bet would be for him to create a new account, and just keep track of the contributions from both accounts for the assignment. Referencing issues at Patient participation[edit]

Hi Ian, I've noticed that students from Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/University of California San Francisco/Health Policy (Fall 2017) are working on Patient participation, and from the looks of the section drafts they're posting to the article's talk page it looks like their work will noticeably improve the article. However, a few appear not to understand how footnotes are linked and/or are using {{reflist}} to display references on talk pages instead of {{reflist-talk}}. Could you take a look at their additions to the talk page and clarify things for the students who seem to be having trouble? Thanks! —Shelley V. Adamsblame

Help Needed Finding Photos of Butterfly (that satisfy Wiki requirements)[edit]

Do you have any suggestions on how to find an image of this butterfly? Thanks!

Need help request from Goldsthm (talk)[edit]

Hello.

I wrote additions for the wiki page Energy Policy of Canada. I added details about how policies are formed at the federal and provincial level. I included the recent 2015 policy agreement that was developed by both the federal and provincial governments. I also included the provincial governments response to this agreement. Specifically I focused on Prince Edward Island and the strategy they developed to meet the federal energy goals. I hope that people will expand on these additions and add more details about what the other province are doing in response to the federal energy agreement.

In regards to my additions I have the following questions:

1. Did I cite correctly? It was a little confusing entering the appropriate information into wikipedia so I hope I did this correctly. 2. Are my figures okay? I created the graphs based off of data I found on the identified websites. 3. I would also like some advice on where in the wikipedia page "Energy Policy of Canada" I should add my additional section "Energy Policy of Canada". There is a lot of information in the wiki page and I am not sure where my section would be the most appropriate. If you could give me some advice that would be great.

I would also appreciate any other edits that you think are appropriate to my additions for this wiki page.

Thank you,

3 specific questions for Ian[edit]

Dear Ian,

My name is Winston Zhou, and I am enrolled in a class wherein I have been asked to edit a Wikipedia article.

I have edited <aexternal free">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_of_Siberia">"Power of Siberia"</a>.

If it is not too much trouble, I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide some comments on the changes I've made.

Furthermore, I have three specific questions I would like to ask you.

1. Will the references section update itself when I copy the changes I made from the Sandbox to the actual article? I already added new citations, but I see that the references section still reflects the old citations. 2. Do you think that the tone for the additions I made are okay?

3. Is it possible for me to modify the CSS for the Wikipedia article? For example, I would like to decrease the padding/margin for the

  • bulletpoints. Thanks a bunch! Sincerely, Winston --WinstonZhou (talk) 20:17, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Wikipedia Article's Authenticity and Possibility of Unreliable Source[edit]

Created an image on Microsoft word using information from several research articles[edit]

    Hi Ian,

I am a little bit confused about how the Creative Commons/GNU licenses work and whether my flow chart qualifies. I created this basic flowchart (using microsoft word) based on the research of several different groups of researchers and I'm wondering three things: 1. Am I able to obtain a creative commons license and how would I credit the sources I used? 2. If so, how exactly do I obtain a creatives commons license? Do I just copy and paste the automatic script generated at the Creative Commons Website? 3. If it's because I used microsoft word, is there a work around I can do? Thanks so much,

    CodeSwitch (talk) 17:17, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Ian, sorry to bug you again! I have tried unsuccessfully to upload the flow chart I created. The recurrent error I receive is either "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons" or "An automated filter has identified this edit as potentially unconstructive, and it has been disallowed. If this edit is constructive, please report this error." I can show an admin my flowchart if that's the issue here? CodeSwitch (talk) 05:40, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ian, I need some help with a couple of things.

    1. Media. My images and media look horrendous. For the table I created, it looks like maybe I should just create a wiki table is that correct? The diagram I've created has a lot of white space, do you have any suggestions for how to fix that?

    2. Could you comment on the tone and clarity of the first paragraph. Much of the content is the same, but I tried to adjust so that initial paragraph was more general and clear as to what a CCA is and less where it is.

    3. For the sandbox to wiki migration. I have included the paragraphs I changed, but for the new sections I'm writing, do I need to do anything special to make those edits happen how I would like, or will I be able to place them when I update the main article?

    Hello Ian,

    - How is the overall flow of the content? Is it easy to read? And is it neutral enough for the article?
    - I have some citations from this website: pv magazine (it will not let me to fully include the link), and the sandbox will not accept that source as reliable, apparently it might be on the black list. Could I request this website to be used as a reliable source? Because I think this website can be traced to its writer/author.
    - I made the section divided into 4 subsections, from Wind Power to Biomass Energy. Is that make the article easier to digest? Does it provide clarity?

That's why I wanted your opinion on it. The document doesn't state anything about copyright and I looked for information on government work but I couldn't find anything definitive. I contacted one of the authors and he told me that the information and images posted on those reports are public and "of free use" that is why I ended up posting it. I looked at the page you sent me and for what I read the information is somewhat outdated, I believe there have been some reforms done to those articles but I'm not sure to what extent, but I don't have the authority to make that decision. Do you know anyone more experienced that can help with this?

    Thank you for your time Lucia.yates (talk) 15:14, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello.

I was wondering if you could help me address the following questions:

    1. The sandbox currently contains parts of two articles and a new article. THe new article is Energy Policy in Ecuador. What kind of steps/process should I expect when making a new page out of this content?

    2. Given that I am making a new article, should I be linking it to any kind of project pages? Is that even my role to perform?

    3. Is there any statement within the article that betrays a neutral tone?

    Questions about pictures and citations[edit]

    Hello,

Along with a team of three other students, I am editing an existing article (Laryngopharyngeal reflux) for Voice Disorders (Fall 2017) at McGill University.

Our group is wondering about the procedure for adding pictures to the article that are not from Wikimedia Commons. Is it possible to add pictures from other online sources?

We were also wondering about how to properly cite some types of information. For example, if we would like to include information about symptoms that are listed in a table in a textbook, how can we include this information without plagiarizing? The symptoms are usually displayed in the text as one-word items in a list, which seems difficult if not impossible to rephrase.

Any advice you can provide on these two matters is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.--Meggeo (talk) 19:24, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ian, to elaborate on the point of the symptoms comment. What if the article lists the symptoms or diet modifications for treatment in sentences. This cannot exactly be rephrased. How can I proceed? Thank you VoiceDisordersKristine (talk) 21:21, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

One of the students in a Wiki Ed class listing you as contact (Tjwigmor in Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/University of Calgary/Introductory Geology (Fall 2017)) has been repeatedly uploading an image from another web site to commons, falsely claiming it as CC-licensed, and adding it to Eleanora Knopf. Hi Ian!

I am submitting questions for the Emerging Energy Policies's class and am writing an article about the History of the Venezuelan oil industry. My questions are the following. I am not sure if you can see my sandbox, but it'd be helpful if you could read the beginning of my section titled Economic Troubles and Their Effect on Oil Policy. Is the tone too negative and biased? Maduro is a poor leader and it's fact that the economy is in decline, but I don't want my distaste for the presidency to seep through my writing. Also, how do I move articles from sandbox when there are other excerpts from the original wikipedia article in between my own text? Wikipedia is identifying them as plagiarism but I don't want to input my own text in the wrong place. Finally, if there are small edits I want to make to prior sections, such as adding a more recent citation or removing a false fact, do I need to use sandbox? Or can I edit the wikipedia page directly?

Hi Ian! Thanks for the welcome message Ian. Myself Suman, a graduate student from USC and part of ENGR 499 course by Sarah Mojarad. I just had a couple things to ask for clarity actually.

As you know, I'm a new Wikipedian, but I've completed the training modules and a couple of edits already!

If possible, have a look at Mars Society page once and review my edits. I'd highly appreciate any suggestion to improve the page.

Most of the content by previous authors are mostly sourced from Mars society website (primary source).I'm not sure if I can replace old references to the existing content in the page. Lemme know.

Also, could you tell me if its OK to add new citations (most recent) by removing old ones?

Thank you very much for the reply, Ian! I acknowledge to your feedback and will take your advice to my learning process henceforth.

I have set a google extension called "grammerly" that automatically highlights any spelling and/or changes in varieties of English. I actually thought about this as a possible concern but wasn't sure. Thanks for pointing it out!

I was also a bit unsure if I can use Facebook pages as the source; because many Mars Society chapters (like India and Bangladesh for example) don't have their official website yet, but have a facebook page. I did find third-party articles about them. I'll remove that facebook source link and reference it with the third party article reference rather.

Thanks for clarifying about where and how the references need to be in a paragraph. I'll make the necessary changes.

I'm not sure what you were referring me to with "|access-date = ". Please let me know about it.

Thanks again for the help Ian!

Entrepreneurship in Cuba[edit] Cuba is in the process of changing their socio-economic model and Entrepreneurship is crucial component of this process. Under reform socialism implemented by Raul Castro, “Cuba’s socialist government would control the major industries in the economy, directing the market mechanism by changing investment credits, amortization rates, depreciation allowances, interest rates, prices, wage structures, and other macroeconomic controls.” (Gonzalez-Corzo). “Reform socialism keeps the foundation of the socialist system in place, however businesses have more political freedom under this reform (Chilosi 1992; Kornai 1992; Nove 1989). Now, one of the goals of socio-economic reform entails the government decreasing its payroll by 20%. The purpose of Reform socialism is to develop the economy by changing government policies while maintaining the foundation of the political economy. This allows the self employed to make more decisions without being constrained by the state government. Likewise, it allows “the introduction of some market-based performance metrics (e.g., profits, and material incentives) to improve enterprise efficiency, and the reduction, but not the complete elimination, of centralized decision-making” (Gonzalez-Corzo). [Great! Is this your language or a quote? The language in this sentence is noticeably different from other sentences.] To date, employment in the state sector has decreased by 13%. Meanwhile, self employment has increased by 187% (Gonzalez-Corzo). I invented this sentence by combining the following two. In fact, the introduction of Entrepreneurship was largely influenced by the increasing demand for goods and services in Cuba. The state sector would not be able to supply for this increasing demand in Cuba. With the changes in government that has loosen the restraint of political regulations on businesses, there are still limitations that control the expansion of the self employment sector ranging from: funding for businesses, business education and no access to foreign investors that are interested in these companies.

I was wondering if you could provide guidance for me and my group on our topic of low protein cat food. We looked quickly on WIkipedia and could not find an existing page on this topic but were able to find a page relating to low protein diets in humans.

    Technical Issue with Class assignment[edit]

Hey Ian! I am Harshini and I was assigned to write a Wiki article on Calmodulin as a part of my Biochemistry class assignment. Since there was a pre-existing article with the same title on Wiki, I wrote an article titled "Role of Calmodulins" that had a different focus than the original article. Turns out though that my dashboard has assigned to me to simply edit the already existing article on Calmodulins and so it is not reflecting the "Role of Calmodulins" article that I wrote. Is there a way that this can be re-assigned? I already have an approximately 1300 words article on the roles of calmodulins posted on the mainspace and the person who wrote the calmodulin article has also linked my article in theirs. Hoping to hear bacak from you soon! Thanks! --Harshini Devi Sampathkumar (talk) 15:54, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Need help request from Aarmst10 (talk)[edit]

    Hi Ian,

I was recommended by my instructors to contact a member of the wiki team for advice! My group's topic is "Odor reduction in dogs". Based on what I have looked through on Wikipedia so far, it seems that there is no existing page on "Odor Reduction in Dogs'. The closest I could find was "Dog Odor', which I was thinking may be helpful to build on, and add a section specifically focusing on diet OR alternatively, focus completely on making a new article about our topic.

What do you think? What would your recommendations be for tackling this particular topic? I hope I have provided sufficient details, and I look forward to hearing from you. All the best,

    Hypoallergenic Dog Food[edit]

Hello Ian, We are getting started on our wiki page. Our topic is hypoallergenic dog food, however, there have been no Wikipedia pages created yet for this topic so we plan to create one ourselves. We are thinking about explaining the broad definition of a hypoallergenic dog, common allergens (proteins and carbohydrates), common symptoms (skin and coat irritation and digestive issues), and food solutions (novel protein diets, limited ingredient diets, and hydrolyzed proteins). We were wondering how we can all link to one person in our group's sandbox because we have to do this for marking purposes.

    Thank you, Ken lambert (talk) 21:56, 30 October 2017 (UTC)Kennedy Lambert[reply]

    Hi Ian,
Specifically, we would be talking about dogs that have allergic reactions to certain foods, which requires them to eat hypoallergenic food.
This is different from a hypoallergenic dog. Does that make more sense?

    Adding an Edit (Taylor1.5)[edit]

    == Adding an Edit == (Taylor1.5)

I want to add this to cell membranes discussion on organelle discussion about cell membranes. Me and my team wants to discuss each organelle structure for base understanding within the e.g topics.

The Golgi apparatus has two interconnected round Golgi cisternae. Compartments within the structure forms multiple tubular-reticular networks responsible for organization, stack connection and cargo transport that display a continuous grape like string vesicles, ranging from 50-60 nm. The apparatus consists of three main compartments, a flat disc-shaped cisterna with tubular-reticular networks and vesicles.

Greg Taylor (Taylor1.5) 10-30-2017 (Marshall University) 8:43 PMCite error: The <ref> tag has too many names (see the help page).

I was thinking something like this.

    PRESENT

Organelles In eukaryotic cells, membrane-bound organelles within the cytoplasm may have a single membrane (e.g., endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi Apparatus, lysosomes and peroxisomes) while others (e.g. the nucleus, mitochondria and chloroplasts) may have multiple membrane systems.[15]

    CHANGE

Organelles[edit source] In eukaryotic cells, membrane-bound organelles within the cytoplasm may have a single membrane (e.g., endoplasmic reticulum, a Golgi Apparatus: "Membrane consist of two interconnected round Golgi cisternae. Compartments within the structure forms multiple tubular-reticular networks responsible for organization, stack connection and cargo transport that display a continuous grape like string vesicles ranging from 50-60 nm", lysosomes and peroxisomes) while others (e.g. the nucleus, mitochondria and chloroplasts) may have multiple membrane systems.[15]

"My team will add to each one. I think it will create a larger grasp on variation of cell membranes; while not demeaning the secondary application of the actual Golgi Apparatus source. The Organelle addition will create understanding of multiple organelle membranes, while filling the section with a leading approach to further investigate organelle functions."

    ANSC 4560 Sandboxes[edit]

Hi Ian, I'm wondering if there is a way to link our sandboxes together so everyone in the group can see each other's edits? We have chosen one group member's sand box to start writing but seems like we are having trouble finding and writing in that sandbox. (Sometimes we edit the source and saved, but the original sandbox owner still cannot see what we put even after refreshing couple of times). Anything we are doing wrong that's causing the problem?

Hi Ian, I asked you some questions about a week ago, and I was just wondering if you saw them? I am not sure if I replied correctly, so I will repeat them here- (they were clarification for a reply you made to me)-"So I was hoping to work with the existing wikipedia page titled 'Dog Odor'. It would give some background information on my topic of odor reduction in dogs for my assignment. Then my group members and I, who have done research on the nutritional aspect of odor prevention, can add what we know (or add pieces from the existing page to our article). So our article could be kind of split into a general section on causes of dog odor, and then we would add a more detailed section covering specifically the nutritional aspect. Hope that makes more sense; what do you think about the feasibility of that? And what do you think about us splitting up our sections of the article into: skin and coat, dental, and gastrointestinal? That way we could describe under how odors are caused and reduced in each. Thanks, Aarmst10 (talk) 00:35, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Student additions[edit]

Sigh. Ian, a whole lot of students, maybe on the same course, are making a whole lot of additions to a whole lot of articles such as Pheromone, Sex pheromone, Lek mating, and Coccinellidae (that's just a sample). They have apparently been working on species X for weeks and have many fascinating facts about them, all cited to primary research. They have then, I suppose, been told to find another article to add a fascinating fact to, with the result that the luckless 'topic' articles get bombarded by one unstructured addition after another. One type is "and this behavior is exhibited by species A, B, C, D, E, F, Gee, and Zee.[ref to species A]" - this is unsatisfactory both for its listiness and for its lack of citation, and I won't even mention the tortured English. Another type is "Ladybirds eat insects. They are additionally [hint: fascinating fact #27 coming up] significant predators of Nuisance-issimus american-farm-damage-ensis as evinced in corn plantations in Indiana.[1][2][3]" This is potentially constructive but in the wrong place in the article, and the student hadn't noticed that biological control was mentioned someplace else in the article. With any luck the Fascinating-Fact-additionally-exhibiting-behavior season is almost over for another year, but there really should be a bit more regulation rather than just letting the hordes loose on live articles and, ahem, volunteer article maintainers. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:29, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Chiswick Chap: - I'm sorry about this - this class is good at writing species articles, but they aren't so good with the idea of adding incoming links - and, to be honest, since students so rarely even add incoming links, it isn't something I have given much though to. Thanks for letting me know. I will get in touch with the instructor, and think about how to adapt the training material for this in the future.
Many thanks. It's not so much links as very specific examples of often general facts. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:35, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I got that. I was just trying to explain their motivation (but I think I skipped a step in my head). The class has been creating or expanding articles on lepidopterans - and (IMO) doing really good work on these species articles. (You can see what they've been doing here, if you're curious). The problem here, I think, is that when they try to add incoming links to the articles they've worked on, they're narrowly focused on the species they've been working on. Should I just add it to the existing part if so where? Also I would like some feedback to my addition and maybe what direction I should take next. Thank you so much.

    Hi Ian!

I need help with my first draft on the Healthcare Worker's Disease Outbreak during the SARS outbreak. Could you read my first draft in my sandbox and give me some feedback? Some specific concerns I haver are listed below:

    1. Determining if there are relevant sections/subtopics that are missing from my article. 2. Seeing if my language usage and citations are sufficient/typical for a Wikipedia article. 3. Pictures/Visual aids that may contribute to my article? 4. Is there a better way to title my article? Thank you!

    Help with ANSC 4560 Assignment[edit]

    Hi Ian,

My group and I have been starting to go through some articles and compiling our information on the topic assigned to us (Skin and Coat Health in Dogs). We have placed "Coat (dog)", "allergies in dogs", and "dog skin disorders" into our watchlist. We discussed adding some sections in each about preventative care, ingredient options in food to look for for treatment/prevention, and potentially creating a new article for Dog Skin and Coat Care.

We would really appreciate some feedback from you for some options, etc.

    Thank you (Hannahjayg (talk) 14:58, 16 November 2017 (UTC))[reply]

    Pet Nutrition Wiki Assignment[edit]

Hello Ian, I have a few questions about my groups topic of Diets for cat skin and coat care. We were trying to figure out whether we should create a new page or add to existing pages. I found two pages that could possibly be added to. One was a cat food page and I was wondering if you think we could add a skin and coat care section to this. The other page was cat skin disorders and it had a sentence that relates to our topic when it explains what cat skin disorders were. Would we be able to add a section on to this or do you suggest starting our our page?

Adding an image to wiki sandbox[edit]

    Hey Ian,

I made a histogram on my laptop that I tried to add onto wiki but when it uploaded it says it was a stolen image and I was copyrighting. When I tried to delete it wouldn't let me so then I tried to add the reference to where I obtained the information for the histogram and it wouldn't let me. The histogram was copied out of the textbook Canine and Feline Nutrition where I recreated it in excel. So I just undid all my edits on the sandbox but it is still saying that I am violating copy-write protocols. I want to upload the histogram image but I don't know how and I also don't want it to say I am copywriting because I'm not I just don't know what I am doing.

    Final version- sandbox[edit]

    Hi Ian,

What my group an I were going for is that we are going to be contributing to more than one page on wikipedia. We will be adding to the "Cat" page, specifically under the "physiology" subsection of this page. For this page we want to describe some of the amino acids etc. that cats cannot produce themselves which is why they need to be supplemented in a diet and why the cat fully cannot produce them. We want to broaden the very minimal information in this section. From here we were then going to link this section of the "Cat" page to the "Cat food" page more specifically the vegetarian/vegan diet section. In this section, we then want to provide some information on what types of vegan foods can be available that contain these nutrients that the cats require. Again, by linking it back to the first page on "Cats" and why they specifically need those nutrients.

Does this make sense? Or are we still approaching this assignment all wrong?

Or I can add hospitals in San Francisco that did treat Plague patients, but I would be adding information about San Francisco's hospitals into an Oakland article? What do you suggest adding based on the two options that I provided?Aleman1993 (talk) 01:22, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Pet Nutrition Topic[edit]

    Hello Ian,

My group was hoping you'd be able to review our information before we post it publicly? We'd like to post it as a page called "Gastrointestinal health cat diet". Our sandbox can be found here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Elafleur/sandbox

    Help for these classes[edit]

Is it possible that you could possibly exhort these students writing Wikipedia pages to rely on WP:SECONDARY or even better WP:TERTIARY? Pleaase? Often, the sources cited are awful, and this problem has persisted for years. --Smokefoot (talk) 01:12, 1 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Questions regarding integration[edit]

Hello Ian, Our group feels as though our sandbox is near complete. I was really hoping it could be published or get some last feedback. If this is possible I would love to be able to put our link into other relevant wiki page such as the 'Greyhound' page as well as the 'sled dog' or 'Husky' page as we talk a lot about nutrition for those two groups and they do not seem to have any specific information of nutrition for there pages. Not really sure how to go about this but we would really appreciate any help. Welcome[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia and Wikiproject Medicine

Welcome to Wikipedia! We have compiled some guidance for new healthcare editors:

    1. Please keep the mission of Wikipedia in mind. We provide the public with accepted knowledge, working in a community.
    2. We do that, by finding high quality secondary sources and summarizing what they say, giving WP:WEIGHT as they do. Please do not try to build content by synthesizing content based on primary sources. (for the difference between primary and secondary sources, see WP:MEDDEF)
    3. Please use high-quality, recent, secondary sources for medical content (see WP:MEDRS). High-quality sources include review articles (which are not the same as peer-reviewed), position statements from nationally and internationally recognized bodies (like CDC, WHO, FDA), and major medical textbooks. Lower-quality sources are typically removed. Please be aware that predatory publishers exist - check the publishers of articles (especially open source articles) at Beall's list.
    4. The ordering of sections typically follows the instructions at WP:MEDMOS. The section above the table of contents is called the WP:LEAD. It summarizes the body. Do not add anything to the lead, that is not in the body. Style is covered in MEDMOS as well; we avoid the word "patient" for example.
    5. More generally see WP:MEDHOW
    6. Reference tags generally go after punctuation, not before; there is no preceding space.
    7. We use very few capital letters and very little bolding. Only the first word of a heading is usually capitalized.
    8. Common terms are not usually wikilinked; nor are years, dates, or names of countries and major cities.
    9. Do not use URLs from your university library's internal net: the rest of the world cannot see them.
    10. Please include page numbers when referencing a book or long journal article.
    11. Please format citations consistently within an article and be sure to cite the PMID for journal articles and ISBN for books; see WP:MEDHOW for how to format citations.
    12. Never copy and paste from sources; we run detection software on new edits.
    13. Talk to us! Wikipedia works by collaboration at articles and user talkpages.

Once again, welcome, and thank you for joining us! Please share these guidelines with other new editors.

    Secondary sources[edit]

Hey Ian. Who goes through all the students edits to push them to use secondary sources and format the references similar to the rest of the articles they are working on? Do you guys systematically do that? Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 22:37, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Systematically? No. We focus on getting them to do this up front, and we're working iteratively to improve that. We pay more attention to medical-related topics, where it matters more. I spot check student work, as I'm able (and follow up when I see patterns of problems). And I try to get instructors to look at sourcing when the look at student work.
"Systematically" though...that has me thinking. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:10, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

student training materials for editing about health/medicine[edit]

Hi Ian. Some students from this class don't seem to be familiar with MEDRS, MEDMOS, and MEDHOW. I went looking for the training material (I recall that there used to be some but maybe I am wrong) and all I found was a link to MEDHOW on this page. Does that material still exist somewhere? thx. Jytdog (talk) 19:10, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Found it here; that dashboard page is just not linked-to from here. That should be marked historical or something maybe? Jytdog (talk) 19:15, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We don't use it, but some non-US classes might still. I don't know. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:21, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
btw that class is editing in a ... difficult topic, namely health effects of natural products. There is lots of bad literature, lots of hype from the dietary supplement industry, and lots of advocacy from people in alt med. Very difficult topic. Student GA nominations[edit]

Hi Ian, sorry to mention another thing. Students are still nominating articles they haven't contributed to. One can only surmise that their lecturers have mentioned the GA system without saying terribly much about the desirable preconditions, the work involved, the possible delay, and the need to be around possibly in many months' time. I'm not convinced there shouldn't be a blanket ban on student nominations, but failing that a more careful approach would be highly desirable. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:00, 13 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can tell, this wasn't the case. The instructor for this course is one of the most experienced people I work with, and she knows Wikipedia policies quite well. As far as I know, apart from mentions of FAs and GAs for illustrative purposes in our training materials, we only mention them as examples of articles that students shouldn't pick to work on.
In a few cases instructors do ask about nominating student work for FAs or GAs. If they do, I steer them clear of the FA process, and let them know the commitment that a GA requires (willingness to stick around and address areas that need improvement) and the importance of not wasting volunteer time. Student-authored article deleted; sandbox deleted[edit]

Hi Ian, A student of mine created a page that was tagged for copyright violations and deleted. I asked her to make changes in her Sandbox and recreate the page. She did, and the page was deleted again. Her Sandbox is also now deleted. I can't see any of her work from the semester. Does that mean she deleted her own Sandbox?

The Wikipedian who deleted was User_talk:Jimfbleak and the student's User page is User:Joneskm2168

    Any advice? Christiancyoung (talk) 16:38, 13 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Christiancyoung: No - what happened is your student moved her sandbox back to the same page, where it was deleted again.
I'm going to email you the contents of the deleted pages, so you can see what they did. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:12, 13 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ian, the user Smokefoot has harrassed my 400 level chemistry classmates and instructor during the course of our wikipedia class assignment. I direct to the talk page of condensation reaction, alkyne zipper reaction, and organometallic chemistry to see how smokefoot has been treating new comers. Also useful would be to view the talk page of the instructor Mclaughl, where smokefoot has also left his mark.
