Marcelus provided numbers (evaluation required)
Hello, I created new discussion in your talk page because I need your evaluation of Marcelus recent actions as well. Yes we had disagreements with him in the past, but I was not involved in any of the three sanctions of Marcelus in the last ~6 months, so I don't know all the details. Thanks for clarifying why he was sanctioned the most recently. Since all three Marcelus' sanctions were in Lithuania / Poland topics it risen a concern to me because I am a long-term editor of Lithuanian topic and I am recognized as one of only two precious editors in "Lithuania" topic, so I seek for high quality content in "Lithuania" topic.
Firstly, it was strange that after little more than 3 hours Marcelus appeared in this nomination in which I requested to rename article name of Paweł Holszański from Polish language to Lithuanian language, despite the fact that Marcelus never before edited this article which was created in 2006 (check edit history of this article).
Secondly, I would like to point out to the way how he presented numbers of allegedly the most common name of Lithuanian noble Paweł Holszański / Povilas Alšėniškis (in my nomination and then in this discussion) by purposefully selecting "Search pages in English only" in the Google search and this way excluding many Lithuanian sources which use name Povilas Alšėniškis (e.g. article of the Universal Lithuanian Encyclopedia). Paweł Holszański is Polish language variant of his name and Povilas Alšėniškis is Lithuanian language variant of his name. By providing such numbers and Google search links in the nomination and discussion Marcelus presented Polish language variant as more common than Lithuanian language variant (455 versus 104). However, by performing neutral Google search with content of all languages we find out that the Lithuanian language variant is much, much more common (19,000 versus 11,400).
This is clearly important for WP:COMMONNAME and most likely will result in a decision if Polonized name of a Lithuanian noble from the Lithuanian noble family Alšėniškiai will be kept. What do you think about such presentation of numbers by Marcelus? Is it according to Wikipedia:Assume good faith, WP:NPOV and other Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines? I think it could purposefully mislead other contributors about the most common name of this Lithuanian noble. For example, if we select Italian-only text in the Google search we might also get favorable results for Italian language in the cases of French nobles names, etc.
I believe you see Marcelus' IP address somewhere, so by geolocating his IP address you will find out if he is from Poland or not (I think there is 99% chance that he is from Poland and 1% that he is from a nearby country like Belarus with large Polish minority). This could be useful for identifying why he present such numbers favorable for Polish language and very unfavorable for Lithuanian language. If such Marcelus' activity do not comply with Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines, I think it is an important example of his editing in topics he was recently sanctioned already. Due to the imposed zero-revert limitation he clearly do not perform edit warring anymore, but does such presentation of numbers comply with Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines or is a different type disruptive activity in the same Poland/Lithuania topics? Sorry for my long comment, but I am concerned. -- Pofka (talk) 22:20, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
- There are lots of reasons he could have found that discussion that are perfectly innocent. This looks like a content dispute. Editors will inevitably disagree with each other sometimes. It doesn't matter what Marcelus's nationality is or where he edits from. You should focus on discussing the content, not other editors. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:39, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
- @HJ Mitchell: But is such presentation of numbers by purposefully excluding Lithuanian sources in a Polish-Lithuanian dispute is Wikipedia:Assume good faith (fundamental principle on Wikipedia)? He acted in this way after less than a week following your sanctioning, so I think it is important. This could clearly affect voting process and decision making in the nomination. In your sanctioning you stated to Marcelus that "This restriction is indefinite, but I will be willing to reconsider after three months with no violations and no edit warring in other topic areas." So I think he should strictly comply with the Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines, especially its fundamental principles. However, I think such presentation (manipulation?) of statistics could mean violation of Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines, so that's why I requested your evaluation if such content-related activity is disruptive or not.
- You are right that all currently recorded sanctions for Marcelus are for revert warring. However, recently there also was a report (two months ago) because he described Zigmas Zinkevičius (famous Lithuanian scientist, author about Lithuanian history and minister) as
chauvinistic pig
(1, 2) and according to users Cukrakalnis and Turaids (see: archived discussion here) he violated WP:NOTHERE, WP:ICANTHEARYOU, WP:GRUDGE, WP:POVPUSH, WP:SYNTH, WP:OR by trying to insert "anti-Polish" text about Mr. Zinkevičius (for quick understanding of the situation take a glance at Cukrakalnis' initial statement and initially uninvolved editor Turaids' 15:49, 24 January 2023 statement). In this report he was actively defended by (another?) Polish user Piotrus with who he recently exchanged e-mails through Polish Wikipedia to communicate privately (evidence). The report was flooded with text and eventually archived without a clear decision if he violated the Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines, despite multiple users saying that he did and the fact that it seemed like this way he caused WP:BATTLEGROUND (I did not participate myself, only saw later what happened). - Afterwards Marcelus and Piotrus began removing content in a contentious topic (see edits of Marcelus: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and Piotrus: 1) which Marcelus initially described as "
Plus some additional badmouthing of Poland (...) It's completely off-topic. Basically, the whole Belarusian part should be rewritten
" (edit) and "the article is suppose to be about history of coat of arms, not an excuse to spread anti-Polish propaganda
" (edit). - So content-wise his editing is worth taking examination as well. By the way, Marcelus today inserted another claim to the same discussion that
Paweł Holszański was a Polish-speaking Lithuanian noble
(Marcelus' edit), but did not provide any WP:VERIFIABLE WP:RS to support this claim. Can you please ensure that he provide such source having explicitly such quote about Povilas Alšėniškis? Otherwise, I think this could be a violation of WP:OR (7 days after your sanctioning). By the way, one of the provided examples of Wikipedia:Nationalist editing is "Famous person is or is not a member of group". -- Pofka (talk) 19:28, 14 March 2023 (UTC)- @Pofka: Your two posts between them are over a thousand words. - @HJ Mitchell: Hello, I was quite busy for the past few days and Marcelus continued behaving in the same way, so today I filed a complaint at WP:AE as you suggested (see: Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement#Marcelus). Since you very recently sanctioned him, please provide your evaluation. -- Pofka (talk) 00:56, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

[1] What exactly do you mean by "hate speech"? Seems entirely subjective- what is constructive to one person is "hate speech" to another. "Hate" is in the ear of the listener. It depends much more on the sensitivity of the listener than the intention of the speaker. Someone who's wrong on the internet (talk) 03:46, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Someone who's wrong on the internet: our article gives some good definitions of hate speech. In the context of deciding whether to block someone for their first and only edit, I would usually be looking for something like religious/ethnic/anti-LGBT slurs or "I hate <insert characteristic>". Nine times out of ten (essentially any use that isn't self-deprecating), the N word is hate speech. Professing one's love for a fictional swamp-dwelling ogre is not. Rollback
Hello,
It has been approximately three weeks since you granted me a rollback rights trial and I am wondering if you will consider granting it permanently. I am familiar with when you are supposed to use the rollback feature. I have used the rollback feature on vandalism and my own edits. There have been some accidental misclicks but I fixed it and reverted it back. DDMS123 (talk) 17:46, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
- @DDMS123: According to the software, you've only used it about half a dozen times and two of those were tests. I'd be happier if you had a bit more of a track record. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:54, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, I'll try to establish a more better track record. DDMS123 (talk) 18:00, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
91.73.33.144's unsourced edits
Thanks for the block on 91.73.33.144. I think that that IP4 is the same editor as the IPv6 I reported here [2] and that geolocates to the same country.
Just today, 2A00:F29:280:BD93:F4AD:1707:38D:33A9 made this edit at Kaathal: The Core: [3] and after I reverted it and left a warning on their talk page, 91.73.33.144 made a nearly identical edit: [4]
I think 2A00:F29:280:BD93:F4AD:1707:38D:33A9/64 (or even 2a00:f29:280::/42) could use a 72-hour block and then we'll see if they resume after that block expires. — Archer1234 (t·c) 14:36, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Archer1234: I've blocked the /42 for a fortnight to match the IPv4. Let me know if they're if they're still causing problems after that and I'll make the block longer. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:41, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
Brianna Wu
So let's get this straight. Two editors both make 500 edits in one day (today) to become extended confirmed and then kick off a massive edit war with each other over trivial grammar edits on a page historically targeted by trolls. Right.
Once upon a time, I'd have indeffed them both but I no longer have objective judgment in this topic area. CIreland (talk) 21:29, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- I saw that they were both new. I hadn't realised how new they were until after I'd partially blocked them both. I'll keep an eye on things and see what happens. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:32, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

- Blocks endorsed. This was blatant trolling and point-making. Newyorkbrad (talk) 21:47, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- She's been on mine for about as long as she's had a standalone article. I somehow ended up being the admin on the spot when Gamergate kicked off. Not an experience I'd care to repeat. Though it's not the obvious trolls who waste small amounts of time that worry me, they'll be shown the door soon enough, it's the ones who waste hundreds of hours of the community's time. I wonder what The Devil's Advocate's latest account is, or Tarc's... HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:54, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

How to file complaint?
@HJ Mitchell For a better Wikipedia, I strongly feel that I should file complaints against several people. How do I do that? I believe there is a page particularly for that purpose. I would appreciate your guidance. Thanks.70.164.212.36 (talk) 18:48, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
- It depends on what you want to complain about, but the incidents noticeboard is probably the best place. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:07, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
- Great, thanks. You probably saw my cut-and-paste of the under 3-minutes flat deletion of my first edit (I had promised not to write, not to cut-and-paste :) . That was simply the beginning of a frustrating episode. Also, the person hurling insults, then another someone who apparently suddenly became an expert on a subject after talking about rock music for years, stalkers of my Talk page who keep asking that I be blocked (like the undertaker in Lucky Luke who keeps saying "let's hang him"), not to mention an admin who insulted and threatened me with his great powers (not you). No shortage of candidates, unfortunately.70.164.212.36 (talk) 19:35, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
- Make sure to read WP:BOOMERANG. You'll be asked to provide evidence for the offenses you allege above in the form of diffs. And your own actions and comments will be under scrutiny. You edited with an ethnic POV in a contentious area under DS, you attempted to apply a religious/ethnic POV to volunteers attempting to help you at DRN [5], you've accused everyone who has disagreed with you of being "paid propagandists", and since returning from your block nearly a month ago you have evinced some serious WP:BATTLE and WP:IDHT mentality. You could attempt to return to some constructive editing, preferably in an area not under DS, or you could go the route mentioned above. The end results will depend on your decision. - If pointing out what is against Wikipedia rules, giving proper references and direct quotes, noticing propaganda and trying to clean it up is editing with an ethnic POV, then I must admit you are correct in stating that. As for what I asked of the arbiter for the dispute that I filed, I simply asked because I did not know of any rules prohibiting that. There is an ethnic question as to why my edits were deleted, not why I made the edits (you can be green as far as I care. I only know to protect facts), so I had to make sure that whoever was going to be the arbiter did not have biases (note that I added Turkish as well). In my opinion, he overreacted and was influenced by one of the parties to the dispute. Finally, I did not accuse everyone who disagreed with me as being "paid propagandists", but I simply drew attention to the existence of such, which I have no doubt of. I am more than willing to do constructive editing, and that is what I thought I was doing with the Burning of Smyrna article, adding references and smoothing out outright propaganda ("only a few Turkish and pro-Turkish", indeed!). However, I am afraid of running into similar hostility, unless I resolve the existing issues first. Hopefully, some of you who mean well will try to see my side of the debate. In any case, I do not wish to fill up @HJ Mitchell's Talk page, so I will stop here.70.164.212.36 (talk) 04:07, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Just an information
I want to inform you that the two users भोजपुरी and लोहरान that you blocked in this wiki recently were continuing similar vandalism in Wikimedia Commons. Their actions have beet reported to an admin. Btw, please keep an eye on them whenever you are free. Thanks. Haoreima (talk) 16:09, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
- Idk if sock puppet investigation will be helpful or not. To me, their behaviours are almost all similar - replacing Devanagari script (Hindi script) by Kaithi script (Bhojpuri script) without any discussions or explanations. Haoreima (talk) 16:11, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Haoreima: I don't think there's any need for an SPI here as they're already blocked. If there are issues on Commons I'd suggest going to c:COM:ANU or c:COM:AN/B. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:16, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

- Am I going to get a response here? If I did make a change to something someone had responded to, I certainly didn't intend to do so. That can happen inadvertently during an edit conflict. I'd just like to know where I did it so I won't make that mistake again. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 17:09, 25 March 2023 (UTC)
- You may not have edited your comment after somebody replied. I didn't look at the timestamps. My point was to ask you to please post your statement in one edit and not go back and add to it or change it later. If that means taking longer to post a reply because you have put more thought into what you want to say, that is preferably to commenting in a rush and having to go back and change it. Hey HJ,
You blocked 87.107.220.3, but I think their edit summary’s need to be revdel or oversighted. Can you do this? - 🔥𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒆 (𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌)🔥 14:41, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
- They're rude, but they're not "grossly offensive, insulting, or degrading" or libellous. In my opinion, it's more important that anyone can see why that IP is blocked than that we hide rude words. Nonetheless, RevDel is massively over-used in my opinion, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone's already done it while I was typing. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:45, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

- It's long been a principle that everything on Wikipedia should be public unless there are good reasons to hide it, including block logs and the reasons for them. That's why RevDel is (supposed to be) limited to copyvios, grossly offensive material, serious BLP issues, and other kinds of serious disruption, rather than just rude words, and oversight is even more limited to essentially personal information and libel. But my impression is a lot of admins will revdel just about any instance of the word "fuck". HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:02, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

Thoughts on rewriting
Hi Harry, hope all is well. I've been trying to shape Walt Whitman's lectures on Abraham Lincoln up for FAC and I just ... can't. Every time I read through, I'm left quite unhappy with the prose/structure, yet I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix it. I was hoping you might be able to quickly take a look and offer any thoughts on how I might fix it. No worries if not. Cheers, Eddie891 Talk Work 00:29, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Do you mind reading my ANI close re:User:Freoh?
I'm not a frequent ANI closer and while I certainly have gone long, I would love any feedback you'd care to offer on my close. I've been reading the discussion all morning and I'm not asking you to do that, just help me understand how I could have been more direct and less wishy-washy. BusterD (talk) 18:50, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
- It seems a reasonable closure to me. I try to avoid spending too much time at ANI, but if your close is an accurate summary of the discussion, I'm left scratching my head as to why they weren't indef'd. But, a closer is supposed to sum up the consensus as they see it and in 11 days no admin saw fit to swing the hammer unilaterally. If I were closing it, I might have put the result (the bold bit) at the top and the summing up below and I might have made the summary a little shorter, but that's me. Well done for taking it on and writing up a proper summary of the discussion instead of leaving it to fall into the archive unresolved. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:14, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, Harry. I was trying to summarize the discussion itself, but made the comment about more direct consequences being likely. In this case I'd rather err on the side of warning rather than acting, since I didn't see consensus for that. On the other hand, it could be argued I've merely kicked the can. Thanks again. BusterD (talk) 19:33, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
- At least you've kicked it in the right direction. If we end up having the same conversation again it's likely to be shorter, and they can't argue that the concerns weren't made clear. I often think that closures at ANI (and in general) are unnecessary but this one shows the benefit that can come from a well-considered close. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:46, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello. Just read this and realized Buster might not be the very experienced ANI admin I initially assumed them to be. Can I suggest that it might be a good idea to monitor Buster's discussion with Freoh ([[6]])? Specifically, I personally suspect it is a manifestation of Freoh's inability to take advice and let it go, and if so, Buster's good faith will not be rewarded. Cheers CapnZapp (talk) 06:51, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for your concern. I'll concede my good faith often goes unrewarded; fortunately I don't assume good faith in search for any compensation or return. If anybody sees me in distress I'd appreciate the ping. BusterD (talk) 09:47, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
March 2023
Recently, I've noticed your interest in editing some British military related articles and I thought to ask if you might have any interest in doing a co-nomination for James Madison who was US President when the 1812 War with Britain was taking place, for a FAC renomination. I've already done the successful GAN nomination. One benefit is that you get to put a gold star on the top of your Talk page if it goes successfully. Any thoughts? ErnestKrause (talk) 00:20, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry, between real-life and my exisiting commitments on-wiki I don't have time for a project of that scale. I might skim over the prose over the next few days when I get quiet moments. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 09:42, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
Registered historic parks and gardens in Monmouthshire - a favour
Hi Harry, from your comment above, the answer may well be no, which is fine of course, but if you had a bit of time to spare, I'd very much appreciate a Source review on Registered historic parks and gardens in Monmouthshire which I have up for FLC here. I don't think it would be too arduous - there are a dozen books, a few online sources, and about 100 Cadw/Coflein citations, all of which lend themselves to online spot-checks. As I say, if you've not got the time right now, no problem, but if you had, I'd be very grateful. All the best. KJP1 (talk) 13:19, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- @KJP1 I could never say no to you but source reviewing is not really my area of expertise. I'm away from home at the minute but if you still need someone next week (when I can get to a proper computer), let me know. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:29, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- Harry - thanks, that’s fine and understood. I’ve put a request up for a source review, and hopefully someone will pick it up. KJP1 (talk) 16:39, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
AE alteration needed
Hi Harry. On the now-closed AE for me, you made a comment "...Please refrain from making substantive edits to your comments once posted, and especially once replied to...." You have explained that you were irritated that I had not made a comment all at once, but had added and revised it in several edits, without any intervening comments by anyone. Right now your comment stands as an accusation that readers will forever assume is a true accusation. (I have never seen such an accusation made at a drama board without it being because someone violated talk page protocol by editing a comment that had been replied to. Otherwise, adding to or tweaking a comment is not forbidden.) I'd really appreciate it if you would remove that comment. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 19:43, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

- @Toddy1 I'm not sure what the issue is there. I could be CIR, it could be a language barrier, but whatever it is they're causing problems and not improving the encyclopaedia so I've indef'd. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:19, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Discussion with User:Troywan
Hi HJ, I'm a bit uncertain just now as to if I've done the right thing. After they attempted to replace the article Frank van Diggelen with a declined AfC draft, User:Troywan accused me of copying content (?) on their talk page. As they did not ping me, I'm only seeing this now. As this is my first time having a content dispute, I am a little distraught, and thought you could help. Have I done anything wrong? I don't think I've done so. This is all rather saddening; it's kind of ruined the excitement of getting a Good Article promoted today. Any of your help would be appreciated, as always. Schminnte (talk • contribs) 17:21, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Schminnte Sorry for the belated response. I don't think you did anything wrong there. They shouldn't have overwritten the article, especially as their draft was inferior to the existing version. Don't let it get to you. Some people focus only on one article, usually one that means something to them; we have to worry about the encyclopaedia as a whole and all six and a half million articles. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:05, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the advice, I'll keep this in mind. Schminnte (talk • contribs) 15:09, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

AE request regarding Marcelus
I noticed that in the AE request during Marcelus, I started talking about Marcelus' behavior towards Cukrakalnis (and vice versa). Since I don't want that clogging up the main AE request, should I make a separate thread at WP:ANI? Just wanted to ask. -- Shadow of the Starlit Sky 03:50, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Shadow of the Starlit Sky If it's relevant to the AE request and you can summarise it concisely, add it there. If it's outside the scope of the Eastern Europe contentious topic or it can't be summarised concisely, you would be better taking it to ANI. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:31, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
- Hmmmm… looks like I gotta take it to ANI, then. -- Shadow of the Starlit Sky 15:57, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
- The thing is it is somewhat related to Eastern Europe but it’s more about editor conduct/civility than that topic itself. -- Shadow of the Starlit Sky 16:04, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Shadow of the Starlit Sky AE can only apply restrictions in relation to contentious topics so if you're seeking action with a wider scope, you're better off at ANI. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:13, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Deletion
Hey can you delete this page. It is not linked anywhere and is currently of no use. No article is made. So, can you please delete that page. In the future, when someone tries to create a draft, it might be a problem. 2402:3A80:1E05:655B:56C6:F72:9BE1:7241 (talk) 06:23, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
- I can't see any valid reason to delete it. If it becomes a problem in the future, we can look at it then. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:10, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
- IP - I agree with HJ. As a frequent page mover at WP:RM/TR, it's not uncommon for us to be asked to move a draft to where a redirect is currently blocking the process. We can handle it at that point and isn't hurting anything in the mean time. - UtherSRG (talk) 16:35, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

- @UtherSRG Apologies, it's a Twinkle preference. It's useful for removing junk and categories when blocking vandals/spammers and username violations but not when indef'ing for other reasons. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:08, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
- Ah! Got it. I can see how that would be useful at least for some indefs. In this case, it wasn't, but I put no foul on you for that. This user failed WP:CIR. - UtherSRG (talk) 16:43, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Suspecting edit war
Hey, I have reviewed Sayyid: Revision history - Wikipedia and it seems that there is an ongoing dispute between two users, furthermore they are possibly engaged in an edit war, so I came here to ask for your opinion as I am very unfamiliar with Wikipedia policies. Miner Editor user problem
User Miner Editor, to whom you granted rollback privileges, made what seems an automatic rollback on the Doomsday argument page at 7:25am on April 9, 2023. This was a rollback of a good faith edit that in fact provides the only correct solution to the issue discussed on that page. Miner Editor did not seem to read or understand the problem or the edit. Their privileges should be hence revoked and the rollback removed.
- Everyone makes mistakes. Me included. One misjudged rollback is not grounds for revocation. I would suggest talking to them and explaining why they were wrong and hopefully they'll see it as a learning experience. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 09:35, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

TPA for talk page spam
Hello there. I noticed that you immediately revoked talk page access for a couple of recent spamublocks who had spammed on their talk pages. Is that a standard practice? If not, I think it should be! I've lost track of how many WP:CORPNAME accounts keep spamming their talk pages after being blocked. Many thanks for your work here all these years. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 16:00, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Drm310 If the spam is on their talk page, I usually revoke TPA, yes. I don't know about other admins. I have some sympathy for people who mistake Wikipedia for some kind of hosting site but none whatsoever for spammers who would have no intention of following the rules if they'd bothered to read them. Lots of IPv6
Hi, Harry. You blocked 2402:3a80::/32 from the user talk namespace pursuant to persistent harassment from it per this discussion. Now I see another IPv6, 2405:205:1287:1ced::619:f8ac, from the same geographical location, harassing 331.dot again, in the same manner. Is there anything to be done, or do you think it's time to just wait for them to get bored? The pages in question are well-watched, after all. Bishonen | tålk 21:18, 16 April 2023 (UTC).
- PS, and another at User talk:Cullen328: 2401:4900:1C1B:959C:6092:9CD3:B88F:EFFF. I guess they have access to lots of ranges. Bishonen | tålk 21:29, 16 April 2023 (UTC).
- @Bishonen Hey Bish, looks like they're mobile IPs which are notorious for broad and dynamic ranges. You could play whack a mole with short range blocks. There's no point blocking them for any length of time because they'll be on another range before the block expires. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:50, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, we can't block all of India, I guess. And, as Beebs said, admins typically don't really care about that kind of IP harassment. On my page, certainly, that crap gets reverted so fast by the trusty talkpage stalkers that lightning stands still. Bishonen | tålk 22:12, 16 April 2023 (UTC).

Typo in block log?
Hi Harry; thanks for your work. This block log entry seems at first blush like it may have been the result of a misclick? The discussion at AE reads as if centered around the blocked user's persistent misgendering mixed with some general rudeness, and nothing to do with gun control. The user is asking on his talk page for the block to be refiled under a different CTOP / Arbcase. I'm here as a neutral party asking whether that might be possible, or alternatively if you could explain to him why the gun control topic was chosen to appear in the log. Thanks in advance for any response. Folly Mox (talk) 08:04, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Folly Mox apologies for the delay. The conduct in question was at the intersection of three designated contentious topics. Since I was imposing a site ban rather than a topic ban or any more nuanced sanction, I just picked one of the three. I wasn't aware that anyone would take offence to the topic it was logged under but if anything I'd have thought gun control would be less offensive than gender and sexuality. 2600:387 rangeblock
Hi HJ, while I was logged out, I noticed you blocked all IP addresses in the range of "2600:387::/40" Pardon me for asking but isn't that a particularly huge range? That covers just about all of AT&T across the entire United States, doesn't it? I'm not telling you off at all, I am just curious as to whether this is a typical thing that has to be done to combat IP vandalism. I can imagine it's pretty easy to edit from a mobile phone. ⛵ WaltClipper -(talk) 18:19, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- @WaltCip: Apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I haven't been at a proper keyboard for a week. You're correct, it is a large range, but it's one that gives us a lot of problems as you can see from it's block log (and if I remember, the block logs of some of the /64s within it). I've softened the block so anyone who wants to can create an account but the unhelpful anonymous edits outweigh the helpful ones. Unfortunately mobile IP ranges tend to be large and dynamic, which makes combatting vandalism difficult. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:11, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for explaining, and I apologize for deleting my question. I was worried that my inquiry sounded a bit too much like pointing fingers.
- That's an awful dilemma. On one hand, the vandalism surely has to be stifled. On the other, it seems we're trending very heavily in the direction that static IPs (usually home addresses) are really the only available way for people to contribute anonymously, and I know that generates complaints of its own too. It's a difficult position to be in! Glad you're out there fighting the vandals, though. --⛵ WaltClipper -(talk) 14:28, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
- You're right. It's a new take on the age-old Wikipedia dilemma. We want to encourage anonymous editing, but that also leaves us wide open to abuse and the only tools we have to respond to that are blunt instruments. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:21, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
User:Wacto talk page use
Hi HJ Mitchell,
This user that you blocked a few weeks ago – Wacto – is using their talk page access to further promote their business (diff) instead of placing an unblock and name change request.
So you might want to remove the talk page access.

Marcelus/Pofka AE request
I recently found out that User:GizzyCatBella, who majorly affected this AE request's result (in fact, it was their proposed decision for a 1-way IBAN and a logged warning that ended up being enforced), was indeffed and ArbCom blocked as a suspected sock of User:Jacurek. Should we review this AE request or something due to GCB being a sockpuppet? Just wanted to ask you as you were the admin who closed the aforementioned AE request. -- Shadow of the Starlit Sky 13:20, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Shadow of the Starlit Sky Speaking for myself, I'm satisfied with that outcome regardless of GCB's contribution. Regardless of their influence, the result would likely have been similar. Again speaking only for myself, I didn't feel it was necessary to re-impose a full topic ban and the IBAN and final warning, in my opinion, strikes the appropriate balance and lays a clear pathway for any potential future disruption. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:36, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
- @HJ Mitchell Yeah, I kinda agree with you. I think the result is OK as of now. I just wanted to know if I needed to do anything to clean up what was left behind from GCB's socking. -- Shadow of the Starlit Sky 14:31, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
Autopatroled
Hello again HJ. I was wondering about requesting autopatroled privileges at Wikipedia:PERM. Do you think I would be approved? I've created 37 articles according to XTools, including 2 GAs. I draft all of my ideas now, after an unfortunate circumstance with getting an early creation deleted. Thanks for consideration, Schminnte (talk • contribs) 15:25, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

Vandalism on "Memory Safety" page
User talk:46.140.113.98 has been repeatedly vandalizing the Memory safety page (see Talk:Memory safety#advertising for SLIMalloc for discussion). It looks like they were banned from editing the page for a few days, and then immediately performed the same change again, once the ban was lifted. I'm new to editing Wikipedia, so I don't know what the right course of action is, but I wanted to bring it to your attention. Thanks so much!! KramerCosmonaut (talk) 04:57, 26 April 2023 (UTC).
KramerCosmonaut has repeatedly censored a highly-relevant ResearchGate publication while claiming that this entry is "vandalism". As our attempts to start a conversation were not honored on Wikipedia (see the "Memory safety" discussion) we have sent this email - in the hope that the real vandal (the author of science censorship) will give an explanation to his obvious conflicts of interests and unfair use of Wikipedia editing powers:
Subject: Your Censorship of SLIMalloc on Wikipedia

From: P. Gauthier <xxxxx[at]xxxxx.com>
To: xxxxx[at]xxxxx.net
Dear Mr. William Woodruff,
Since you are "Engineering Director, R&D practice" at TrailOfBits.com "Responsible for directing the Ecosystem Security group",
and "Program manager and technical lead for program analysis research across DARPA programs" for Cyber-Security,
and have yourself given "course on ethical hacking" and contributed to "security tooling",
it is surprising to see you repeatedly censoring SLIMalloc on Wikipedia under the fallacious accusation of "Vandalism",
especially since all the other commercial products listed on this Wikipedia page are immensely inferior to SLIMalloc - both on capacity and performance.
We would be delighted to publish SLIMalloc as "Open Source" software - if only we were sponsored or funded - either by private investors or by the taxpayer.
In the absence of funding, we have to keep trade secrets private so that we can sell our works and make a living.
I am open to any discussion or suggestion you might have.
Sincerely,
Pierre Gauthier

IP evading block
Good day, I'm reporting a vandal who evaded a previous block by changing his IP code which was 151.48.146.82 and was blocked by you, currently it's 151.48.150.174 and is being used for the same kind of vandalisms, I think that you may be able to do something about it.151.82.129.28 (talk) 15:10, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

Removing rollback right
Hello, I'm requesting my rollback rights to be removed, as I do not have a need for them anymore. Since you were the one who enabled them on my account originally, I thought I should contact you about it. Thanks. – MaterialWorks 19:54, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
I am curious as to the reason for a December 2021 block being put on User:216.213.209.201, an IP that hadn't edited for over three years. BD2412 T 01:42, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

Portsmouth war memorial photos
It was great to see you in Portsmouth the other weekend! And better late than never:
I did a bit of perspective correction on the reliefs, but getting them properly square was impossible without causing too much distortion. Hope they're useful all the same. the wub "?!" 00:08, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

ZORKO BRAND
Seems like it's not their first rodeo with spamming Zorko, with accounts such as:
- Zorko drinks (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)
- Verifiedpro (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)
- A handful of IPs
- and now ZORKO BRAND (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)
all propagating that nonsense over the last half a decade. I don't see what more to do with that, but since you blocked that last one, I thought I'd let you know. LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 10:54, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- @LilianaUwU Thanks. They're persistent, though not very prolific. I've blocked the other account and the IPs are caught in a range block that appears incidental. I'm in two minds whether to protect Zorko or leave it open as a honey trap. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:00, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

- @Deepfriedokra there's been a sockmaster targeting that article for a while. I suppose it's possible that someone unrelated made 29 trivial edits then made two edits that look exactly like an LTA but that doesn't bode well for their future editing career... Hai. A user of the name User:Naduz is repeatedly vandalising this article's lead section. When other users edit the article and improve the grammar and content, this user removes it and rewrite them using poor grammar. He is edit warring.
