I am diagnosed with "moderate autism", but I don't know whether it matters to communities. I'll address whatever issues involving me you can bring up, i.e. I'll take accurate criticisms to heart. (More at my user page...)

An arbitration case regarding The Rambling man has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

  1. The Rambling Man (talk · contribs)'s resignation as an administrator is to be considered under controversial circumstances, and so his administrator status may only be regained via a successful request for adminship.
  2. The Rambling Man (talk · contribs) is prohibited from insulting and/or belittling other editors. If The Rambling Man finds himself tempted to engage in prohibited conduct, he is to disengage and either let the matter drop or refer it to another editor to resolve. If however, in the opinion of an uninvolved administrator, The Rambling Man does engage in prohibited conduct, he may be blocked for a duration consistent with the blocking policy. The first four blocks under this provision shall be arbitration enforcement actions and may only be reviewed or appealed at the arbitration enforcement noticeboard. Should a fifth block prove necessary, the blocking administrator must notify the Arbitration Committee of the block via a Request for Clarification and Amendment so that the remedy may be reviewed. The enforcing administrator may also at their discretion fully protect The Rambling Man's talk page for the duration of the block.

    Nothing in this remedy prevents enforcement of policy by uninvolved administrators in the usual way.

  3. The Rambling Man (talk · contribs) and George Ho (talk · contribs) are indefinitely prohibited from interacting with, or commenting on, each other anywhere on Wikipedia (subject to the ordinary exceptions).
  4. George Ho (talk · contribs) is indefinitely restricted from participating in selecting main page content. For clarity, this means he may not participate in:
    1. Any process in which the content of the main page is selected, including Did you know?, In the news, On this day, Today's featured article, Today's featured list, and Today's featured picture.
    2. Any process in which possible problems with the content of the main page are reported, including WP:ERRORS and Talk:Main Page.
    3. Any discussion about the above processes, regardless of venue.
    He may edit articles linked from or eligible to be linked from the main page (e.g., the current featured article) and may participate in content review processes not directly connected to main page content selection (e.g., reviewing Featured article candidates). He may request reconsideration of this restriction twelve months after the enactment of this remedy, and every six months thereafter.
  5. The community is encouraged to review the selection process for the Did you know and In the news sections of the main page. The community is also reminded that they may issue topic bans without the involvement of the Arbitration Committee if consensus shows a user has repeatedly submitted poor content, performed poor reviews, or otherwise disrupted these processes.

Interaction Ban Reminder

Hello,

I’m writing to remind you that as a result of the arbitration case that both you and The Rambling Man are prohibited from interacting with each other, barring the usual exceptions. Recently, you posted questions to the election pages of multiple candidates where you indirectly made reference to The Rambling Man. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15) Please note that such comments are not permitted under the interaction ban and further instances will result in a block. Shall I report his attempts to excuse himself to you, Mike? I felt unease when he made indirect references by saying "canvassing". I was prompted to ask questions when mentioned "canvassed". Hello, George,

I go through a lot of PROD'd files and I was wondering why you prefered a pretty bland image of a record over a more visually appealing album cover. If they are both non-free images used to illustrate the article subject, in an article about that subject, then I think our readers would prefer an interesting album cover over an image of what the record looked like decades ago. I realize that you are more familiar with copyright guidelines than I am so I'm wondering what I missing here. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 22:20, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Liz: I appreciate your preference for a cover art to illustrate a song, but various releases back then used either picture sleeves or generic ones. Many pre-1990s American vinyl releases and other overseas releases use generic sleeves. But then I figured that I can use free portion of any release, regardless of where it was released in. Otherwise, if I couldn't find a free replacement, then I can go for a non-free portion of a release from the song's home country. Worse, even some album arts don't belong to any specific single release but rather a compilation album or a song's parent album.
I nominated some of my uploads to FFD to have them evaluated. They were eventually deleted without objections from others. George Ho (talk) 23:37, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

1E BLP AfD list

When you find articles that are worthy of 1E AfD/redirect discussions, please consider notifying me. E.g. if you don’t see me at Survivor AfDs, please ping me. It’s not canvassing if I’m requesting it, right? These 1E-chopped-liver articles are WP:NOT and shouldn’t exist, especially the BLPs. I completely understand how an “event” causes a BLP to be created before someone steps up and makes a 1E article. But trying to kill the BLP makes many a seasoned editor wet their panties simply because “the sources are good”. Seeing those AfD closures was particularly satisfying. Hi George Ho. You nominated File:Darin and Sheila Damude.jpg for discussion at FFD, but didn't do the same for File:Gerard Lowe.jpg. Just curious as to why since the way both files are being used is quite similar. The uploader of both files is the same and it might be hard to convince that user that one file is no good, but the other one is OK since they probably see no difference between the two. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:27, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, George Ho,

I just deleted some files your PROD'd but I noticed that you didn't post a notification on the talk page of the editor who uploaded them. Please use Twinkle any time you tag a page for deletion (CSD, PROD, AFD/FFD/RFD/etc.) and set your Twinkle Preferences to "Notify page creator". We do have bots that sometimes fill in at times like this when a page tagger forgets to notify the page creator but it isn't 100% reliable. So, it would be much easier for you to post these notices, via Twinkle, when you tag a page for deletion. Please try Twinkle out, it really is a useful editing tool in so many ways. Thank you. Just for reference, you don't need to use Twinkle to add a user talk page notification; you can simply copy-and-paste the notification template syntax in the prod deletion template onto the uploader's user talk page. When you add {{Proposed deletion}} to a file's page, just make sure the |help= parameter isn't set to |help=off. The notification template will be displayed by default if you remove the parameter altogether or set it to |help=yes. You can also add the same notification to the article's talk page or a relevant WikiProject's talk page if you want. Audio from video

Hi, I remember you uploaded some cleaner audio of fair use songs a while back and I was wondering if you could help me out. There's a free (commons!) video with a bunch of Spanish and Catalan names being said, and I was hoping to create audio files to add these to the relevant articles, but it seems like however I export the audio it's always the wrong kind of .wav for the uploader. Lemme get this straight: you intend to upload fair use or free videos, right? Or audio and video? And which video format? I can get audio format .wav. Regarding naming, how about using {{rename media}} (if local) or {{rename}} (if Commons)? Or you can simply rename the files yourself via Wizard before uploading the file. Ok, there's a free video. I have separated audio and saved it as .wav format, but the Commons uploader says it only takes a certain type of wav file and what I have is wrong... it's not working. I can't find a way to convert the audio to .ogg, which I think is the only other file type the uploader accepts. As I remember you have uploaded .ogg files before, I was going to upload the video (as .webm, which the uploader automatically converts) and am asking if you would be able to take the audio from this video and upload to Commons as .ogg files. The audio is of (peoples') names, nothing to do with file naming - that's the other part, it's maybe 10 names, so I could also split up the video to multiple uploads, one for each name. .mp3 is now a free format and (IMO) easier to use than ogg, and the uploader should be aware of it. (Still can't figure out why ogg is still used more often than mp3, despite mp3's patent being expired for several years.) If you still insist on using wav instead, both c:COM:File types#WAVE and c:Help:Convertin video should help you more. How about the Audacity software? Regarding the naming, when I uploaded JPEG and PNG, I can use the same titles only as long as no other JPEG file uses the same name of the JPEG file and no other PNG file uses the same name of the PNG file.

I don't know why or what you mean. By adding more info, if I use the plain list format, the execution would've looked sloppy, and the source would've looked less readable. Well, if anything, it's the other way around: since you want to change the existing style, you need to get consensus by convincing others that there is something extraordinary, per WP:BRD or WP:RETAIN. Otherwise, we could have 200,000 of these back-and-forths where you (or someone else) are adding {{track listing}} and I (or someone else) am removing it back and forth. That's why MOS:RETAIN exists: where we have different styles, keep the existing one so that we don't expend these resources on this kind of stuff. RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.

The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.

Large-scale deletion of Fudan University

As one of the most reputable universities in China, Fudan University deserves a comprehensive wikipedia page for the global audience. However, the user has cut down more than half of the carefully curated and edited contribution over the years by many other users for no reason.

I would like to specifically ask what is the reason behind deletion of the previous history section, especially regarding the funding and Chinese meaning behind the university name as cited here: "Fudan University, then romanized as Fuh Tan, was founded as Fudan Public School in 1905, by Ma Xiangbo, SJ, who had resigned from Aurora University. In February 2024, I tried to replace the single covers for the songs "Alone Again (Naturally)" and "Helter Skelter" (song) (File:Alone Again single.jpg and File:The Beatles "Helter Skelter" US picture sleeve.jpg) with free single labels from Commons (c:File:Alone Again (Naturally) by Gilbert O'Sullivan side-A 1972 US release.jpg and c:File:Helter Skelter by The Beatles B-side label US vinyl (copy 2).png) as they likely failed WP:NFCC#1. Both were promptly reverted by a user who said that the cover arts are not "fully replaceable" with the vinyl labels, and both cover arts survived FFDs calling for their replacement/deletion (WP:Files for discussion/2024 February 16#File:Alone Again single.jpg and #File:The Beatles "Helter Skelter" US picture sleeve.jpg). Reading FFD discussions, I figured that pro-cover arts people will favor keeping them. I'd refrain from re-nominating them for now until a lot of time passes. Of course, there are other songs to consider, but if I were you, I'd focus more on pre-1980s single releases if you wanna continue with the same mission. Have you considered stopping your campaign against cover art altogether? This is not something that has community support (as has been evidenced at FFD) and if you want a general policy against it you should gain consensus for that, instead of citing NFCC (which again, the community does not interpret in the same way as you do).

@Elli: I'd love to stop if not for fears of misinforming and misleading general public into believing that a cover art is the standard artwork of a single release and if not for other editors omitting captions as "irrelevant" or "non-controversial". Readers looking at a vinyl label would identify one part of a release, some of them more curious and willing to research further. Other readers ofa sing article would jump into conclusions and then... stop researching further... or just listen to the song over and over without having to research. Avoiding misinformation is a high priority, in my opinion. The consensus, I think, would consist of those wanting to attract mass appeal without consider accuracy and probably young'uns who are oblivious about much of history. It'd be clear to our readers that the cover art wasn't used everywhere if a caption is added. (1) Sometimes, an editor can remove one older caption and then a newer one. (2) Even a caption might not ease my concerns about which portion or cover art is appropriate as lead image. (3) Lately, there has been a trend of eliminating captions from articles about most recent songs, especially when a cover art is universal. (4) Most album articles may not necessarily need a caption; unsure about song articles. (5) No point on adding a caption for an existing image if I'd replace an existing image with another one.

Yes, if an image doesn't need a caption, then it doesn't need one. For newer singles, sure. But various artworks have been used for specific releases, most of them overseas.
Many American singles lacked picture sleeves back in those pre-CD vinyl days, and old surviving singles occasionally or often have been traded from one generic sleeve to another. Even some picture sleeves were discarded for whatever reason, probably wear and tear, or the same reason listeners discarded singles, or... I dunno.
To recognize a vinyl single, if a picture sleeve is absent, a surviving vinyl label should suffice, but nowadays that's as if you are a vinyl collector or into vinyl again amid ongoing vinyl revival era. A single lacking labels and picture sleeves would be harder to identify, honestly. I might say the same about CD and cassette singles, but would those be different stories?
it's clear that editors prefer actual cover art to pictures of the records. Not surprised. However, that also leads some editors into using (misleading) cover arts of parent albums using same names of songs, thinking that such cover arts would fool readers, especially without using captions. Millennials and newer generation, as I fear, probably wouldn't bother researching older songs but rather newer ones heard on radio or streaming, especially when researching has never been one of their top priorities. Even they wouldn't care much about how music industry worked back in old pre-digital days from past consumers' perspectives.
I still think vinyl labels should sufficiently help readers recognize specific American releases lacking official picture sleeves, but that's when no free alternatives exist at this point and when songs or singers come from the USA. As I understand it, use of templates, such as {{pb}} for paragraph breaks, is better for many purposes - such as accessibility - than html tags.

This is just a hint, not a complaint (your edit conflicted with mine on the blackout RfC, but I've left yours in place, since editing other people's comments is meant to be very minimal).
