Updating an article about your self on wikipedia

Hi there

Thank you for your mail with the info regarding getting started on Wikipedia. The reason I got on and created an account was to update a page that is already on Wikipedia about myself, Professor Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela. I do not know who created the page initially, but would like to keep it up to date. I do not have a problem with my updates being proof read by anyone, the main aim is to make sure the page is reflective of my work and current since people searching for me find it first.

how can I go about archiving this

Linda Valori

You presumably mean this edit? Please note that the changes had too many issues such as pov, invalid deletions, and unexplained revisions. The attempted changes replaced an article with a minimal number of references with an article which not only contained no references, but deleted other useful material such as the persondata and the categories. Therefore the revisions left the article in much worse shape than the existing version. However, it is agreed that "false information" or unreferenced content should be removed from the article and replaced by content which can be traced to references (that is, verifiable). Having reliable sources helps Wikipedia editors find out if articles contain "false information". Dl2000 (talk) 01:37, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

The objective and truthful content must be downloaded from this page. the correct year under the image of "linda" is 2013 not 2003! You had visited page to do some editing on caste of Hemu by birth. Lot of information has appeared on talk page but one senior editor Sitush is adament on not removing the wrong facts. He is ignoring genuine references and supporting half-baked, factually wrong references. This makes the creditability of page doubtful also. I notice you corrected my editorial error in thinking that Wikipedia preferred the Month:Day: Year Format.

Recently I did a lot of (obviously unnecessary) minor editing changing all the dates in Misha B and her three singles Home Run, Do You Think of Me and Here's to Everything (Ooh La La) to that Month:day:Year format. • Wikipedia editors for US articles (except military) prefer the mdy date format, most of the rest use dmy (or some may not be conscious, and will use both). Your error is understandable, and fortunately because it's a common problem, there is an easy fix. Your articles have all been aligned to dmy with some additional fixes. And thanks to Ohconfucius for stepping in while I was on several hours wikibreak. The scripts mentioned are indeed recommended to help unify formats and other article elements. The X Factor article was unified based on it being a UK subject, therefore the US-oriented mdy conventions are not normally applied. Dl2000 (talk) 03:11, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Andy Hobsbawm

Hey DI2000, I re-wrote the Andy Hobsbawm page to clean up the flags. It was the first Wiki project that I've taken on and I thought everything was completed according to the guidelines. I noticed that you added a GB tag to the article. I assume this means that the reference dates should be in the British style and I was wondering if this is applicable on all articles. • Yes, all the spelling in an article about a British subject should be British spelling and all dates should be dmy. I'd just add that WP:MOSNUM allows for reference dates to be uniformly yyyy-mm-dd, if you're that way inclined, although some (like me) would prefer them to be dmy throughout. There's no need to be too strict in applying the formats, as this is a job that would otherwise be fastidious if it were not for automation. My advice would be to load up the scripts so that each conversion takes a second. Or you may tag an article with {{use dmy dates}} and/or {{use British English}}, and I or Dl2000 or someone else will come around eventually to straighten out the formats. -- Ohc ^¡digame!_{¿que pasa?} 08:34, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

And thanks to Ohconfucius for replying while I was busy. Indeed, WP:TIES is applicable on many national topics. As for flags, some are cleanup flags which can be removed once the specified issues are resolved e.g. referencing improvements, cleanup, WP:NPOV, etc, then there are tags which should remain with the article even after conformance e.g. {{Use British English}}, {{Use dmy dates}}, etc. Each tag should have a documentation section to indicate the appropriate treatment. • I suspect the comments relate to this edit, where you changed {{use dmy dates}} to {{use mdy dates}}, and altered a number of date formats also to mdy. This appears to be in violation of Wikipedia's convention for articles pertaining to India, which use the 'dmy' format (see also Date format by country). It's also, incidentally, contrary to respect for the format determined by the first major contributor in all other cases where WP:TIES does not apply. The article should therefore stay as 'dmy'. Date formatting in titles of publications

Hello. Re this edit to Jimmy Bissett... Please could you point me towards the piece of MoS that says we're supposed to change titles of publications, or, as here, titles of chapters within publications, to follow WP date formatting rules. For the record, the fact that something went badly wrong during the tenure of office whose job it was to stop that thing going wrong, and on an enormous scale, seems to me to be a relevant biog. fact. You know, if someone is officially in charge of a dam and the dam bursts, isnt that kind of relevant? But there seems a great wish among the owners of Wiki to protect establishment figures like G. from any criticism, however well justified.

However, do not disturb yourself to reply to this message. I find Wiki far being the genuinely open, participatory system that it affects to be. I have found several times that the shadowy, self elected Wiki police come along and delete postings in ways that seem to me unjustified and there is no way ordinary folk can resist or appeal against such deletions. • Please don't remove the dates maintenance template even though you may not see the point of it. Although there are currently no dates in the article, that does not preclude there being dates in the article at some point in the future. The template acts as a time stamp in the maintenance of all articles. Tagging will allow programmed maintenance of date formats going forward.     • Just getting back after a few days of other activities... first, there are frequent cases where editors remove the date tag when removing another maintenance tag such as {{no footnotes}}, so the deletion of the dates tag could be assumed an accident that was part of the other edits, especially considering that the edit summary only indicated "ref". Also some editors are not aware that some templates such as {{use dmy dates}} are not issue templates and so are not removed, even if the article is consistent. Although dates may not currently be on the article, there may have been dates in the article in the past, but removed for various reasons e.g. deleting a ref due to deadlink, even though this is discouraged at WP:DEADLINK. Anyway, the template was restored because there was no stated justification for removing it, although removing {{no footnotes}} was obviously appropriate due to the added ref. Date formatting style revert

Per your revision of a article for a Canadian made film, I ask you to clarify your reason based on this excerpt from the style guide:

Choice of format

All the dates in a given article should have the same format (day-month or month-day). However, for citations, see Wikipedia:Citing sources#Citation style. These requirements do not apply to dates in quotations or titles.

Articles on topics with strong ties to a particular English-speaking country should generally use the more common date format for that country (month-day for the US, except in military usage; day-month for most others; articles related to Canada may use either consistently).

The above clearly states that a article to a particular English-speaking country should generally use the more common date format. Which for Canada is a mix of ISO and dmy for short dates and mdy for long dates. I fail to see why so many editors think the ISO format is hard to comprehend, when it was designed and adopted to avoid confusing short date formats like dmy and mdy.Helmboy (talk) 03:51, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

• The article is of a Canadian subject, and can indeed in theory be in either dmy or mdy format, per WP:MOSNUM. According to you, Canada uses "a mix of ISO and dmy for short dates and mdy for long dates". However, our convention is a usage that is deemed and not necessarily the one that you claim to be de facto. The use of yyyy-mm-dd dates within the reference section is not at issue as their use is not a requirement. It's not relevant in any event because dmy dates have been used from the beginning.

I find it very frustrating that Wikipedia allows changes to its site with unverified information. I would like to point out that I have tried a few times to correct the references over the years but there seems to be someone that wants to have fun at your expense by adding aircraft to the company that are not operated. Seemingly there are very small minds out there that get a kick out of changing things and having a laugh at other peoples expense!

The company Golden Eagle Airlines finished operations in the north of WA in June 2013 by handing back the company RPT AOC. The company has NOT gone into liquidation or made insolvent, it just ceased business. I am sure you are interested in portraying TRUTH when it is pointed out and hope that you will act professionally in the response to this message. Badr Hari changes I made

Hello DI2000, thanks for your nice way of reminding me :) The case with the sentence I removed from Badr Haris page is as following: He is a former K-1 Heavyweight champion (2007—2008)[5] and K-1 World Grand Prix 2009 finalist

"...is a former K-1 Heavyweight champion (2007-2008)[5]..."

This is unfortunately not true. I also read the reference [5], but this is only an article of a dutch magazine. It says "Politie zoekt K1-kampioen" meaning: "Police is searching for K1 champion"

Whatever, he never was K1 Heavyweight champion. In 2007 Semmy Schilt won against Peter Aerts and became 2007 K-1 Heavyweight champion. In 2008, Badr Hari was finalist and fought against Remy Bonjasky, however he kicked Remy Bonjasky illegaly and was disqualified. In 2009 he was again finalist and lost against Semmy Schilt.

Hi, ignoring MOSTIES for a moment, is there any other reason why you keep doing things like this? There is, for example, no Indian English dictionary or work of grammar and there is a long tradition of using British English because it was the darn Brits who introduced the language to that country (and they only left in 1947).

There have been some discussions about this particular type of tagging and they've never really come out strongly for or against ... but it is irksome. - Sitush (talk) 00:04, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

There are in fact some dictionaries and usage works involving Indian English (Oxford U Press, Sound System, INDUS/Harper Collins, etc). There is the Indian English article, although it does indicate some uncertainties regarding general English usage patterns in India. Perhaps if consensus is available, {{EngvarB}} could be preferable to {{Use Indian English}}? However, MOS:TIES does have consensus, and keeping track of English variants is a reasonable logical conclusion from that; not sure why it would be irksome to support that. Another editor set up the tag some time ago. It was restored since it is a type of tag which should not be normally deleted without MoS reason. If the article doesn't have the format "at this point", then changes may have been made since the tag was applied which might be contrary to MOS:DATE. The article also doesn't seem to have a strong national tie (e.g. US) that would warrant conversion to mdy. You could check with the tagging editor and/or article talk. Yeah it appears to have been originally introduced here but as far as I can tell there were no extended dates (beyond year) of any kind in the article then or since, at least until I started working on it this week LOL. It was introduced a few years ago, probably about the time you ceased to be active on the project. It's a part of WP:DATESPROJECT. In addition, you might like to check out the template documentation. The documentation seems perfectly clear, I think I was more confused because I'm wasn't sure why the article in question was tagged at all because it didn't include any extended dates. But it is about a literary genre and discusses an international selection of authors (though I think most are American at this point) so I suppose it was a preemptive move? The thing is, I overhauled the article and added over 23 citations this week (before that there were none) using the American date format since I'm American. Will this tag make a bot come along and change all of those to dmy? I have no problem with that in an of itself, but I'm not sure to which nation the article should have strongest ties. There is probably no strong national tie in the article in MOS:DATE parlance. Maybe check with Tony1 who did the original tagging - he might support removing the tag or perhaps indicate if he noticed a date pattern earlier in the article development. Death of Neil Robson

This is verifiable from Tasmanian newspapers but unfortunately people now have to pay for content. There was a reference on Google and it may have been appropriate for you to have done a google search before removing the date of death. I'm not criticizing you, as I realize you are probably busy in your role as a page patroller and did not have the time to check. There are entries on the Tributes page, which has to be paid for after a certain time. The online newspaper Tasmanian Times has a reference by the President of the Proportional Representation Society of Australia, and it is a very nice obituary, but it is at the bottom of another article. This is referenced, as you requested. Tasmania is a small island, and although Robson is a very significant figure he has not been a parliamentarian for some years and people forget. The Launceston Examiner ran details of his death on page 2 the following day, but because of a pay wall it is not possible to access it. Do you have similar problems in Canada? Robson is a significant but unrecognized figure in Australian politics in that "Robson Rotation," where the names of candidates are rotated on ballot papers, is named after him. For the previous edit, as my reverting edit summary indicated, there was no reference or explanation provided, and I did a news search for which "no obit found" at that time, although sources did become accessible since then and the obit sourcing is now in order. Claims of death do need to be supported by a source (WP:V, WP:BLP), and offline or inaccessible sources can be considered acceptable (WP:RS, WP:DEADLINK). I've reinstated the date of death, based on an Art South Africa announcement (Twitter/Facebook), and a compelling variety of tributes to him on such sites as Facebook and Twitter. For Wikipedia purposes, we need to have reliable sources such as obituaries from media outlets. Facebook and Twitter postings are often considered less reliable sources. Proper referencing is needed because unfortunately there are occasional cases where a false death report is entered e.g. Bertrand Meyer#Wikipedia hoax. Finally, my condolences. My reply: There is nothing controversial about the fact that Jonathan Self and his third wife, Marianne Van Pelt, are currently married. The NYT article referenced (which you read) states: "'I’d come home when I met Jonathan, but also like I was undertaking a grand adventure,' Ms. Van Pelt wrote in an e-mail message just after the event. 'We’ve just said our vows in the strange little registry office in Gibraltar — we both cried!' The NYT article makes clear that there was a celebration of their marriage where they first met, not that a marriage service was performed. My reply: Thank you for your good corrections and for spurring me to strip out unnecessary and imprecise detail. As you suggest, I will seek additional documentation for unreferenced family configurations, which were provided by the subject when he wrote about himself to create the article. Whether or not he and his present wife become divorced is in the realm of possibility rather than fact and seems superfluous until it becomes a fact. People split and reconcile now and then, without being tracked in Wikipedia, and thus that detail seems superfluous to an article of this size and minor notability. "Template damage"

Hi,

I'm curious about this edit, which restored some inappropriate bold to the article (Visual Display Unit doesn't actually point at that article, so it shouldn't be bolded, and in any case bolding outside of the lead is very rarely appropriate). Can you elaborate? My inclination is to move those bolded definitions to the lead where they belong, de-bolding the one which isn't a link target. why is the page now redirected?

Hi DI2000, I'm not quite sure why this is happening. A page that I updated this morning, twice, has now been removed and redirected to another page. inappropriate content on a wiki page: how do you change it if you are not allowed to do so.

What if the content put on wikipedia is not accurate and that the person under the name this content is written under wants to remove the content? We are not talking "promotion", we are talking about having wikipedia being accurate about the info it displays, especially when it is under someone's name. In this article, a little more than half of the dates were in format mm/dd, and the other half was in British format (dd/mm). It took me a lot of effort to change the dates to have uniform formats. According to Wikipedia Manual of Style, it is important to have consistent date formatting. For example, you can not have "March 6" in a title, and "6 March" in the article body text. Umm.. you need to be less selective in your reading of the MoS. A title or quotation of "March 6" is supposed to be rendered as is (per WP:MOSNUM, WP:MOSQUOTE), while other date formats can be in the body text. So, no, title and quotation dates should not force the body text to be formatted accordingly (what would happen if different titles have different formats?) Or maybe I missed a part where Crimea is now getting annexed to the US where WP:STRONGNAT would justify the format changes you were making to the Crimea articles. Label collective update

Hello, I am getting in touch with you because we just received notice that you had reverted our sweeping changes to an article about 'Insurgence Records'. Yes, we are the subject of this article and indeed that is reflected in the name on our account. If I may explain the intentions behind the alteration of the article...

The Insurgence Records project has been offline for quite some time. We are beginning anew. The wiki article about us was written by colleagues, but it is badly out of date and the individuals responsible for initially posting it are no longer in orbit with what we are about. The material was replaced by something much more rudimentary because we intend to build this article back up slowly and with the appropriate resources so as to contribute a more realistic picture of who we are. Of course we encourage others to write about us, but the main thing we saw with this article was a disjointed attempt, including spelling mistakes, links that no longer exist (website has moved, myspace is something no one bothers with anymore), etc.

Thank you in advance for taking time out to read this. We appreciate your vigilance regarding random deletions, but can assure you in this particular case, we are acting on good faith and merely seek to build an an updated foundation from which others may more accurately base their links and commentary on. As it currently stands, this wiki gets spanned to Google in a search on us and only serves to unduly date us.

Buddhism by country

Recently, a "new user" has removed again the tags and added totally unreliable claims such as "North Korea is 90% Buddhist, South Korea is 70%" and "Buddhism is the largest religion in the world". The article is in a really really bad state... to support the "1 billion Buddhists" big number it pretends that other religions are "Buddhist" or subsumed under "Buddhism". The Staggering Stories of Ferdinand de Bargos

Hi there,

I did completely update the page on The Staggering Stories of Ferdinand de Bargos, and I apologise if the coding I've done is rubbish. I'm completely new to Wikipedia editing, and have tried very hard to get this one page updated. I have spend days of research at my local library, to get my information correct, and I just want it to be online.

Ideally I would have had just contacted whoever created the page, and maybe ask for their help, but I couldn't find any way to do that. I can only just manage basic HTML, and I have found wiki coding extremely difficult and frustrating. I have already tried various tutorial pages and have not made much sense of them. I am somewhat miffed that there is not an easier way to do wiki editing - maybe with the help of some user friendly interface. I had to resort to using Word 2007 and try and get it converted, but even then I still had to spend many hours trying to tweak the coding.

So sorry to moan, but I really don't have much spare time, and this TV show is one I am extremely passionate about. I feel I am discriminated against because I'm not a coder.

Composite gear housing

Thanks for your help in getting the intro in the proper form. I did not know where to ask for help, so I left comments there and hoped that someone was watching the page for edits. I guess all we can do is make incremental improvements.

Rod Stewart's "Young Turks"

When I saw the text on Rod Stewart's "Young Turks" that said

 "... The lyrics, written by Stewart, concern a boy who has left his hometown with his pregnant girlfriend ..."

I knew that the lyrics cannot necessarily construe that conclusion. Curiously the reference for that text is http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1501 , which says instead

 "... This tells the story of Billy, a kid who leaves his hometown and gets his girlfriend pregnant ..."

Evidently these two quotes disagree with each other about whether the boy (Billy) gets the girl (Patti) pregnant before or after leaving his hometown. While it's evident from the lyric "... Patti gave birth to a ten-pound baby boy ..." that Patti had become pregnant, it's not evident from either the lyrics or the video when or where Patti became pregnant. Regardless, neither of the two aforementioned statements finds justification from the lyrics.

The text and the disagreeing reference made correction difficult. Scouring both the lyrics and the official video, I claim that the best conclusion about Billy and Patti is the interpolation that I said, namely,

 "... The lyrics, written by Stewart, concern a boy and his girlfriend, who have left their respective homes to travel to Los Angeles ..."

with "Los Angeles" coming from the video. One may substitute "another town" or "another city" for "Los Angeles" if relying purely on the lyrics. Other variants are also possible.

I couldn't cite any relevant reference about how Patti became pregnant because I have never found any. I think the lyricists intended to keep those specifics unstated. Yet the sentence in question needed correction because it was baseless. However, it would have been clumsy to explain anywhere all the reasoning that went into such a brief correction. So I attempted to interpolate while keeping the Songfacts reference, which someone else, not I, had introduced. Gooday. I am working incrementally on Phil Vincent and you have made changes characteriSed as "restore from template damage" here.
This article had only 3 old references cited as 2008 (one being a typo as 2006 - I checked the article's instigation as 2008), and as I often/usually paste-in contributions I have made to previous articles - either as a basis or actual prose - it is most unnatural for me to use this format "Use dmy dates|date=September 2010".
Often I don't notice, and often previous editors have badly-formatted their contributions in any case, often missing entirely the date citations are applied (I always add a date irrespective if there is no 'online' URL, as I feel it's better to have a full summary for future editors to easily check when refs have been retro-applied, and in case sections get shifted around.
As I don't want to go through changing what's now 10 refs I have added (and not finished with this and other associated articles) would you at you convenience change the date format to Metric, to your satisfaction? Other bits of code such as "df=yes|" and changing 'Image' to 'File' are beyond my comprehension. Alternatively, I can leave mixed date format. Hi, I would appreciate it if you didn't revert all my edits without at least being given the chance to explain I have added heavy metal as all of there albums could be classed as heavy metal and non of the genres on any of UFOs albums are referenced at present moment. Khoury article

What's there to discuss? You invoked WP:DATERET, and now that you saw that the original format was in the M/d/year format, now you're changing your tune by saying that your preferred format had been in place for 4-5 years. Come on, man that's a cheap point, the other format had been in place for 4-5 years too, not to mention it was the original format to begin with. Look, your recent edit is in violation of WP:DATERET, I can discuss this with you to kingdom come, it's not going to change anything; Concede the point and move on. Have reverted the article to your previous edit. Although it is debatable whether the article style had significantly evolved since earlier US style, it is an unproductive debate at this point so have now changed my tune on this.
