RE:Alf Jones

I have looked in the book I use and I only see one Jones in the list. "Jones, WA Born Wednesfield, from Walsall TS, joined 1885, retired 1886, 0 League appearances, 2 FA Cup appearances." Nice work. I added a few names of novels, etc., and I imagine that there are more. A number of his books re available on Googlebooks. But I think you've got the most important ones. There is an entry on him at the Dictionary of National Biography, but I don't have access to that. DNB articles generally have a lot of informative info, and if you can get access to it, I think it would give you more info. I enjoyed reading the article. Gazette

The search page is http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/AdvancedSearch.aspx?geotype=London Because of the way the majority of the pdfs having been created by scanning in the original printed issues, the indexing can be a little hit and miss, so to be reasonably sure you've go tall the entries relating to a given person you relaly need to search on full names, first name, middle initials and surname, all initials and surname, and for those in the military, service number, assuming one of the other searches turns that up. In addition to beign a defintive source for commissions and prmotions of officers of the British armed services, it's the honours lists as published in the Gazette that are the definitive record of peerages, knighthoods, decorations for gallantry and so on. To try and get round the issues with indexing, I've been creating a list at User:David Underdown/Honours which liks to the relevant issues for the New Year and Birthday Honours lists each year (not yet complete), so if you know that someone was appointed OBE or whatever in a certain year, this provides an alternative way of fidning the reference. Perhaps not so relevant for the sorts of articles you appear to do, certain Church of England appointments are also gazetted, as are results of general and by-elections to the UK parliament. Feel free to let me know if you're struggling to find something, adn there are a couple fo subtleties with the template which may not be immediately apparent, but they've done a major revamp of the website at elast once recently, and using the template should allow us to fix references more easily if they do that again. They're acceptable in that we use them all the time, even if we can't personally verify them, per WP:AGF. However, I don't mark them as verified because that implies I did personally look it up, which I couldn't do. Just leave it, and if there are any other concerns anyone has, they'll be expressed. George Brann

I'll take a look tonight. Sorry if I sounded a bit brusque on Winlaw: I just recognised the rather arch and archaic Wisden style, which is reverential to the point of obsequiousness when it comes to old public school cricketers. Without being an expert on it, I reckon that Wisdens from 1935 onwards are probably still in copyright under the "70 years after the death of the author/editor" rule in the UK, where they were first published, so I suppose we have to be careful! The book "The Men Who Made Sheffield Wednesday Football Club" have his birthplace down as Kirkham, Lancashire which is midway between Preston and Blackpool. Billy Williams (footballer born 1876)

I've added a few bits, but to be honest you've done a really good job with the article and I don't think there's that much more I can add. My WBA Who's Who has a different date of death for the player, so I will start a section on the article talk page to keep track of the date of death as listed in various sources, then if appropriate maybe add a footnote to acknowledge the discrepancy. Michael Keeping

This is probably a hopeless cause but as a Saints fan and part of the cycling project you seem an obvious man to turn to. Here's the query, whilst doing some personal research I found that Frank Keeping (actually called Fred), the silver medal winning cyclist from the 1896 Olympics, went into business in Milford-on-Sea running the "Cyclist's Shop" and later a garage. Now Michael Keeping of Saints and Real Madrid fame's bio reads that he "continued to turn out occasionally for Fulham until 1941 when he returned to Milford to join the family motor business.". Southampton

Hi DK. I was just wondering if I could ask you for your opinion on the Southampton page. Someone has started a massive overhaul of the history section and while I think done without any malice or anything like that, I'm not convinced it is actually improving the article - quite the opposite in fact. Players honours

Hi DK - I would like to have honours for every single Arsenal player but I'd rather they be comprehensive so that's why I reverted your incomplete edits - either have them all or not at all was my line of thinking. Obviously that will take a bit of time, I'm currently most of my way through my second pass over Arsenal player articles to improve them. Billy Felton

Unfortunately I have nothing beyond statistical information. He played for City in a period which is not well documented; after the 1926 cup final team, but before the consecutive cup finals of 1933 and 1934. I don't know of any book which would have more information about his time at City. Even for captain Sam Cowan I had to skip from promotion in 1928 straight to the 1933 cup final.
