Brhamos[edit]

I noticed your changes which re-added the test numbers. I believe there is hardly any qualitative addition to the article by leaving placeholders for tests that have been performed (but there is no public/citable information avialable about those tests). If you are trying to (which I suspect you are) imply that "x" number of tests were performed and nth test out of that was conducted in such and such manner then this can be easily achieved by wording a sentence to that effect - rather than leaving empty placeholders _and_ stub template. Bias in British Raj article[edit]

Your participation in the current debate in removing bias from the current British Raj article is appreciated. A small group of people have overtaken this article to show British rule in India in a highly exaggerated positive light without any discussion of large scale atrocities, suppression of rights, racist policies, general looting of national wealth. Desione (talk) 18:03, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Hi. Thanks for the great job you're doing in Indian Military pages. I have a small suggestion, especially wrt the Indian Army page. When you add new images, I request that you put the previous image (if it is a free/fair-use image that is) somewhere else on the page, or the gallery, since it would otherwise mean that we lose good informative images. thanks. Sniperz11 14:20, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Then thats OK. Thanks for it. I have added the changed image into the Gallery, and you may want to remove it from there if you wish. However, I noticed that a similar thing had happened with the BrahMos Page. I have added the image into another section. Hope thats OK, since the Brahmos page is the main place to put the Image. Cheers. Sniperz11 16:02, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Still, the present pictures too are quite good and informative, and I must commend you for the great job you're doing. If I get any better pictures, I will upload them as well. As for the Present images, it would be a waste to orphan them just because they are of lower quality than we'd like. I think it would be a nice idea to put them into a gallery, or add an images section, and put the links to the images in there. Hope you find that agreeable. Sniperz11 08:02, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for the award you bestowed... I will do my best to continue with the work and keep your expectations up, and improve wikipedia. Sniperz11 17:34, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I sm Indian myself and ashamed of an deluded person like you spoiling nuetral articles which are a painstaking toil of other well informed contributers such as idlrguy. Hi. About Arjun Mk 2[edit]

Hi Chanakya. With reference to the Arjun MBT page, I was wondering if you have any info about the Mk. 2 variant. I'm not able to find much info... all that I'm seeing is upgrades to the Mk 1 itself. Theres no info about Mk 2. Cheers. Sniperz11 15:45, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

thanks a ton for that info. I was looking for any info about whats new in the Mk 2. But I was not able to find anything, except for ur link. Thanks. Sniperz11 04:09, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wanted to know your opinion about splitting the IGMDP page. IMO, the page can be renamed as "Indian Missile Systems" or "Indian Missile Programs", which can give a lot more coverage to the development itself, as well as previous programs like the Devil & Valiant. A new page for IGMDP can be created, since the IGMDP encompasses only the 5 missiles- Prithvi, Agni, Akash, Trishul & Nag. Plus, some missiles can be hived off into their own pages. What do you think? Sniperz11 18:00, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unforunately, this article had to be deleted since it consisted mainly of text taken directly from this website, in violation of their copyright. It would be really great if you could contibute an article about this plane in your own words, since it's a gap in our aircraft coverage right now. --Rlandmann 21:36, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mig-23[edit]

Hi. I need a little info about IAF Mig-23s. Do you know how many were/are there in service? I heard that only the MF variants were retired, but 20 BN variants are still in service, although BRs page does not have them on record. How many were in IAF service, any idea? Thanks in advance. Sniperz11 20:39, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Do you know how many MF variants India originally procured/built? Unfortunately, neither BR nor the IAF page list the previous aircrafts in service. I think we can create a list of aircraft in IAF service as a new list page, with listings by year of service or type. However I dont know how relevant or useful such a list will be. Insignias of Indian Armed Forces[edit]

A great find Chanakya. The Ashoka Emblem on the picture [1] is indeed correct, and, being the national emblem, is included in the insignias of the armed forces as an identifier. I have seen this on service uniforms, naval offrs. caps and plaques, so its correct.

I think the top left is the Naval Aviation wing emblem (not sure though) and writes "meva parasmo parmaha". My sanskrit is a bit rusty, so I'm sorry about not being able to provide a good translation. The top right is IAF emblem with their motto "Nabha Sparsham Deeptam".

Bottom left is the Indian Army, and does not have a motto. Right is Indian Navy, with "Shano Varunah".

Cheers Sniperz11 09:06, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm....I think you're right Chanakya. Also, I think the motto on the Tri-service emblem was misread by me. I think it is "seva paramo dharmah", which makes sense. What do u think? Sniperz11 16:21, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DRDO overhaul[edit]

Hi Chanakya.... I was looking at the DRDO page. I think it could use a bit of tweaking, especially wrt layout. I think we can hive off the projects into separate Lab pages for the individual labs (at least for the major ones (like ADE, LRDE, GTRE, etc.). In addition, a list of labs also is needed. What do you think? Sniperz11 05:31, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

K. Thanks. I'm on it. I'm a bit busy at the moment, so it may take some time to do. Hope thats ok. Cheers. Sniperz11 09:17, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. wrt ur edit #144960261 on the Sagarika page, INS Rajput is the testbed for the Brahmos. I do not think it was involved in the Dhanush Launch (IIRC, that was a different class). I do not know about Sagarika though, since we have no info about it. Sniperz11 14:06, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah.. I think thats correct. The Dhanush test bed is the Sukanya-class while the Rajput is the launch bed for the Brahmos. Like you said, rajput may be involved in tracking and data collection of other missiles, since it would be suited. As for Sagarika, you may be right in that it is a SLBM version of the Prithvi-3, but considering that its a project that till recently, the govt even refused to acknowledge existed, I think we should just wait for more confirmation. Sniperz11 03:54, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I personally think that the Sagarika is a SLCM. Most indications coming out of DRDO and Navy suggest the same. For one, an SLCM is more versatile, and will not be limited to the nuke-delivery role that an SLBM will. We are following the Russian way of using cold-launch rather than hot launch (it was there in one of the DRDO publications). Nirbhay is a good project, and will certainly give the services a much needed LACM weapon. Engine development for it has been going on for some time now actually, based on the Lakshya PTA experience with its turbojet development by ADE. Some Israei help has also been taken, since they have loads of experience developing such systems. Unfortunately, this project went into semi-limbo once Dr. Aatre left. Its been reactivated a few months ago (after the Agni-III and sagarika launches- guess the services saw the use of an LACM). Sniperz11 00:27, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Revert-warring[edit]

Chanakyathegreat, you have violated the three-revert rule, by reverting template:Modern tanks four times in a 24-hour period. I have warned you about edit-warring at template talk:Modern tanks before. Please stop—the way to accomplish things is by seeking consensus through discussion.

If you breach the 3RR again, I will report you to an administrator who is not involved in the discussion, and you may be blocked from editing. Michael Z. 2007-08-08 14:49 Z

I have reported you for violating the 3RR again, at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/3RRMichael Z. 2007-08-08 19:52 Z

August 2007[edit]

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 24 hours in accordance with Wikipedia's blocking policy for violating the three-revert rule at Template:Modern tanks. Please be more careful to discuss controversial changes or seek dispute resolution rather than engaging in an edit war. If you believe this block is unjustified, you may contest the block by adding the text {{unblock|your reason here}} below. GDonato (talk) 13:00, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

{{unblock reviewed|1=I am totally against the misuse of warnings to continue vandalism. It's going to be quite funny if one warns another and continues with edit wars without any specific reason and the one who corrected the vandal gets blocked. This is really a funny policy of Wikipedia. The courts will now punish the police for warning the criminals with I will shoot you warnings and try them for attempt to murder. The Admins must have a relook on the issue.|decline=This block is not about whether you are right in the dispute over the template. Clearly, there is an ongoing discussion on the template's talk page that gives you ample opportunity to discuss the issue without getting into a silly revert war. I also note your failure to assume good faith by labeling others' edits as vandalism. There are mechanisms in place for dispute resolution but infinite revert wars are not among them and the block will give you an opportunity to cool down.

Those who warns first get the opportunity to get the other blocked? What kind of system is this? Your explanation is purely technical and rule based without looking into reality. Even after repeated explanation in detail if someone makes changes without providing any reason, what you call it? I suppose according to your explanation it is not vandalism. Then what is the need to explain things, I can make changes wherever and when I want it without providing any source or explanation, and still my action will not be vandalism. Personal comments[edit]

From Template talk:Modern tanks:

I feel sorry for you. Did you see Arjun MBT there. I think you lack knowledge and require a lot of reading. What I am against propaganda. I hate people spread lies as ultimate truth. That's why I said truth must be put as it is. There can only one thing that can be done. Have the Type 90 or remove the stuff altogether. I still don't understand on what basis you call the tank Pakistani. Because of the name or because it is license produced in Pakistan. That is not the criteria to add it to the list man. I can see some kind of overt nationalistic approach shown by some in you. Can't you think from the reality point of view, not just from the point of adding some flags to satify someone. Chanakyathegreat 08:56, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

I suggest you stick to writing about the facts, and don't indulge in insulting speculation about my knowledge and my character. If you hate me because you think I spread lies, or if you suffer from the ridiculous notion that I am a Pakistani nationalist, or that I can't "think from the reality point of view", you should keep this opinion to yourself.

Your comment is way out of line. See Wikipedia:No personal attacks If I have misunderstood what you write above, I'm happy to let you explain what you really meant by your remarks. Michael Z. 2007-08-11 19:09 Z

Hi, For the Indian Navy Page, IMO, we should include (Hindi: भारतीय नौसेना - "Bharatiya Nau Sena") Since that is the Official appellation used by all government sources and the Navy itself, and it does add context. In addition, Hindi, being the most popular national language, as well as the most commonly used official language, does warrant a translation. Plus, most Indian Languages translate IN as the same. What do you think. Sniperz11 12:11, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thats very tenuous logic you're using Chanakya. We dont try to change central govt policy. If something is official nomenclature, we use it. In addition, the Emblem of the IN does contain the words in Hindi. By the inequality logic, would you remove the words Satyameva Jayate from the National Emblem. Plus, if you look at the Navy Page, they have the name in both Hindi and English. Plus, the translation is the same in many Indian Languages. Its not our place to try and change something official, we should use it without question. Sniperz11 14:45, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Indian Maritime History.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Indian Maritime History.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Pictures & Language.[edit]

Hi Chanakya. I agree with your logic about using only relevant images, and removing those with better replacements. What I'm worried about is orphaning these images, which are good in their own right. Thats why I suggested that we move them to the gallery section first, rather than replace them totally. If need be, they could be removed after some time.

As for the languages, I somewhat understand your logic behind it, but I dont necessarily agree with it. I have replied to that in my previous reply on this page. My opinion is that this is an important topic that should not be decided by both of us alone. I suggest that there be a discussion about this on the Talk page, or on the Wikiproject India forum, since it is an issue that concerns quite a few articles, and may be more important than we both suspect. What do you say. Cheers.

Replaceable fair use Image:Project 17 frigate.gif[edit]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Project 17 frigate.gif. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Seraphimblade Talk to me 04:30, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:[edit]

Hi,

Your view of the subject can very well be correct. I was one of the first persons to question the credibility of the article. But the lead editor brought in some book sources in which he claimed the authenticity of Mappila Malayalam. I assumed good faith and hence did not want to cross-check the correctness of those citations. You have nominated the article for deletion. That is the right way of doing it. Lets see what happens. In this edit, you make remarkably confident and strong inferences about another editor's motivation. Please comment on the edits, not the editor.

Poverty in India Image[edit]

Beggar in Bodhgaya

There is a discussion going on regarding whether or not the following image should be a part of the Poverty in India page. Most Poverty in *Country* pages do not have any images, at most 1. User:Otolemur crassicaudatus has brought many images showing extreme poverty in India and has tried to mislead people into thinking this is the way a majority of poor Indians live. There is a vote in which your input would be appreciated. You can find this discussion here

I feel that the the Bodhgaya Beggar image does not represent poverty in India correctly because:

  • The beggar in Bodhgaya image does not accurately depict poor people in India because they do not look like this. This man is an exception. To say that this man represents all poor people in India is very wrong. A small minority of Indias poor are disabled. Most living under the poverty line work long hours fishing, farming or as construction workers. This picture shows a man whose legs have been broken. Unless a majority of India's or even a fraction of the poor have legs like this, the image is irrelevant and undue to the poverty in india page.
  • Poverty and Disability are not connected in any way. There are thousands of super rich people who are disabled.
  • There are 11 country articles on poverty
  • This user is being uncivil and unyielding. This user has tried to have my user page deleted because it said America is priceless!
  • This image is being used by User:Otolemur crassicaudatus to display his dislike of India and to mislead people into thinking that this is the plight of millions of poor Indians. This user has often added images showing extreme poverty to many India relating articles.[2] Even though this user knows that poverty is present in every country and that extreme poverty is not a fair representation of the Indian economy, this user has previously tried to add an image of children washing their clothes in a mud puddle to the economy section of the India page. This user has added this image to the poverty section of the Economy of India page, when a graph showing poverty would make more sense.
  • WP:Undue says:
We should not attempt to represent a dispute as if a view held by a small minority deserved as much attention as a majority view. Views that are held by a tiny minority should not be represented except in articles devoted to those views. To give undue weight to a significant-minority view, or to include a tiny-minority view, might be misleading as to the shape of the dispute.

This can be applied to this because a very tiny fraction of poor people in India are disabled. Most work very hard trying to make a living for themselves. This image is misleading. Nikkul (talk) 03:10, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:IndianNavalOPV.jpeg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:IndianNavalOPV.jpeg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Replaceable fair use Image:Bmkhdw05(small).jpg[edit]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Bmkhdw05(small).jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ricky81682 (talk) 20:14, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Arjun MBT.GIF[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Arjun MBT.GIF. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks for uploading Image:Agni-III Republic day.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Hi Chanakya
Saw your note. I thought we have almost turned this Aircraft of the Indian Navy article itself into one on the Naval Air Arm? I mean the only thing missing right now is the Naval air stations, and I could easily add a section on them. Then, the only thing remaining is to request a change in title to Indian Naval Air Arm (with a redirect for anyone pointing to "Aircraft of the Indian Navy" to get sent to "Indian Naval Air Arm"). What do you think?
I know you're busy, so I'd be happy to move on this alone if you agree. Marathi_Mulgaa (talk) 19:29, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
