Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Four new wikis have been created:
Problems
- Last week, users who previously visited Meta-Wiki or Wikimedia Commons and then became logged out on those wikis could not log in again. The problem is now resolved. [5]
- Last week, some pop-up dialogs and menus were shown with the wrong font size. The problem is now resolved. [6]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 November. It will be on all wikis from 16 November (calendar).
Future changes
- Reference Previews are coming to many wikis as a default feature. They are popups for references, similar to the PagePreviews feature. You can opt out of seeing them. If you are using the gadgets Reference Tooltips or Navigation Popups, you won’t see Reference Previews. Deployment is planned for November 22, 2023.
- Canary (also known as heartbeat) events will be produced into Wikimedia event streams from December 11. Streams users are advised to filter out these events, by discarding all events where
meta.domain == "canary"
. Updates to Pywikibot or wikimedia-streams will discard these events by default. [7]

New page reviewer granted
Hi Blaze Wolf. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:
- Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
- If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
- Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
- Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
- Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. Hey man im josh (talk) 16:39, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- Y'know I had a feeling you would be the one to give me the role Hey man im josh given the conversations on the Discord server. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 16:40, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Game engines without an article
Is this a policy? And if so how is one suppose to know, I couldn't find it with a quick search. :/ The Minecraft article itself mentions Bedrock so I assumed it was a valid addition for the Legends article as well. Ckoerner (talk) 21:35, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Ckoerner: Hey there! It's listed in the documentation for {{Infobox videogame}} which says
Only use this field for those engines listed in Category:Video game engines, either engines with an established, independent article (such as Unreal Engine), or those that have a redirect to their own section on an appropriate developer or series page (such as Dunia Engine).
― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 00:24, 30 November 2023 (UTC)- Ah, got it. I was looking at WP:MOSVG. I see you fixed the Minecraft article too. :) As an aside, kinda odd that the engine for one of the most popular video games on the planet doesn't have an article/section! Ckoerner (talk) 00:37, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Ckoerner: Well, the engine for Java edition works out because it's a common game library...although the notability tag on that article is a little concerning being from 2016. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 01:15, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Blaze Wolf Middleware (i.e. Havok) and API layers (DirectX, OpenGL) aren't actually suppose to be in that field at all. LWJGL is not an engine. -- ferret (talk) 01:52, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- Ah well then. I'll go ahead and remove it then per the infobox. I was not aware of that fact. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 01:52, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Brianicenhower (23:30, 30 November 2023)
A book that I personally authored & published in 2018 is cited as a source for the Wikipedia page for the term “sphere of influence”. My name Brian ICENHOWER is correctly listed, but I don’t know how to create my own page for my own name to list all of the other published books, works, and etc. --Brianicenhower (talk) 23:30, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Growth team newsletter #29
Welcome to the twenty-ninth newsletter from the Growth team! Help with translations
Community Conversations
The Growth team will host its first community conversation Monday, 4 December (19:00 - 20:30 UTC). The topic for this meeting will be Mentorship.
This first meeting language will be English, but we plan to host conversations in other languages, and about other topics. Please visit the conversation page on-wiki for the details on how to join. You can also watch the page, or suggest ideas for upcoming conversations there.
Impact Module
At the beginning of November 2023, the Growth team deployed the New Impact Module to all Wikipedias. We recently released a follow up improvement to how edit data was displayed based on editor feedback. [17]
Add a Link
We released “add a link” to 35 more Wikipedias. [18] [19]
We have a few Wikipedias remaining:
- German and English Wikipedia will be contacted at the beginning of January 2024.
- There are a few small wikis that will not receive the task until they have enough articles for the algorithm to work properly.
Community Configuration
- We shared Community Configuration 2.0 plans with technical stakeholders. [20] 🖂
- Initial Community Configuration design ideas have been shared and discussed with community members.
- A basic Community Configuration 2.0 demo is released on ToolForge.
- Developers can find some initial proof of concept code shared on gitlab.
Mentorship
When a mentor marked themselves as "Away", they were not getting their name assigned to new accounts when they returned. This has been fixed. [21]
We improved the message received by newcomers when their mentor quits, to reduce confusion. [22]
We worked on ensuring that all mentees are assigned to an active mentor. This required reassigning mentees with no mentors to a new mentor. We paused this as the clean-up script confused some editors. We will resume it when the identified blockers are resolved. [23]
It is now possible to create an Abuse Filter to prevent one user from signing up as a mentor. [24]

Splatoon 3 comments
Here are the comments that I have after a glance:
- The lead is a bit short right now for a 66,000 byte article, perhaps it could be expanded to describe more about gameplay and how the game was marketed and received by critics. Take a look at Elden Ring for an example of how the lead was expanded to include more information.
- The footnote in the first paragraph of gameplay is unsourced, and is not very relevant to gameplay in my opinion and could possibly be removed.
- Painting the ground seems to be an important part of gameplay and combat, but that really isn’t expanded upon until a later part of the gameplay section. Perhaps it can be raised and explained upon in the first paragraph?
- The footnote about transporting data from Splatoon 2 is unsourced.
- You don’t need to have more than three citations for a bit of information as that may be citation overkill.
- The section about TableTurf battle is quite short, and probably doesn’t need to have its own section unless further information can be included there.
- Some citations appear to be inconsistently formatted: The website sources needs to either all be wikilinked, or not wikilinked at all, and they need to either all have their publishers included, or none of the publishers mentioned at all.
- Maybe development can be merged into the marketing section?
- The Reception section is relatively underdeveloped and is probably the biggest hurdle to getting the article promoted at FAC. It cites only 6-7 reviews when there are over a hundred on Metacritic with their own points that may agree or disagree with the current reviewers that are included. Thus, I don’t think the reception section is enough to meet WP:FACR 1b., which intends for the article to be comprehensive.
- The points made by the reviewers that are organized by paragraph, and good reception sections tend to be organized around "topic statements" where a paragraph focuses on a single theme. For example, the current reception section looks a bit more like this article’s reception before I worked on it, while a FAC-quality reception tends to be more organized like that article's current one. You do not need to go overboard and write something like Katana Zero's reception, but for a AAA game, more reviews and opinions need to be included generally.
- As with all FACs, there will be users who make their own nitpicks about the writing style, and so I would go over User:Tony1/Advanced editing exercises to help bring the prose up to scratch and help minimize comments on the writing.
- What helped me the most was taking notes on the writing styles and format of video game FAs from about 2016 onward, so that may or may not help you. How is the writing style of their articles compared to yours? How did FAC reviewers treat the nominated article while it was a FAC? I took notes about those articles and tried to mimic them with my own to make the nomination process easier.
The Night Watch (talk) 15:35, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- @The Night Watch: The things you mentioned that are unsourced are sourced to the game itself which does not require an actual citation to my knowledge. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 16:26, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- Since most information in the gameplay section of articles has the possibility of being challenged, I would try including a citation just to be safe. The Night Watch (talk) 16:33, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- Alright. I believe there's a citation template for this anyway so I'll probably either add the citation saying that it's sourced to the game, or possibly find some other, more accessible, source that states this. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 16:35, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Wikeditor2024 (10:22, 12 December 2023)
Hello, I hope you're doing well! My name is Wael, I just published a wikipedia page for m yself, but it got rejected. I understand that Wikipedia has specific guidelines and criteria for page creation, and I am eager to improve my submission to meet these standards. In my initial submission, I included several reputable online links and articles from well-known sources such as Berytech and Arabnet, ] [36]. Additionally, I referenced my official website, www.bildits.com, where the "Founders' Story" section contains my picture and a quote establishing my role as the founder. Moreover, I cited an article from a podcast with over 17,000 views, where I served as the guest speaker [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DFWJknaeuY. I also mentioned other articles from sources where my company got featured such as Forbes on STEM day https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbestechcouncil/2019/11/05/understanding-stem-educations-scions-offshoots-and-nodes/?sh=8ec26522a73c and also referenced my LinkedIn page https://www.linkedin.com/in/wael-saade/. Would love to know your feedback and I looking forward to hearing back from you, thank you! --Wikeditor2024 (talk) 10:22, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Wikeditor2024: Hi there! The problem is that you are writing an article on yourself, which usually isn't what you should do. I appreciate that you are eager to publish an article, however there's a good chance that you fail our notability criteria. Also, since you're writing about yourself, you have a major conflict of interest and should avoid writing this article about yourself. There's also the problem of reliable sources. While Berytech and Arabnet might reliable (i don't know for sure), websites such as LinkedIn certainly are not. If you believe you truly are notable then someone will eventually make an article on you. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 12:03, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

- @Saganbond: Hey there! I took a look at what happened and the user reverted the edit with the edit summary of "Better before" which is quite vague as to what exactly was wrong with the edit. I would suggest asking the user about it on their talk page so that you can possibly gain an understanding of what was wrong with the edit. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 14:09, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Tech News
- The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 8 January 2024 because of the holidays.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 December. It will be on all wikis from 21 December (calendar). There is no new MediaWiki version next week. [37][38]
- Starting December 18, it won't be possible to activate Structured Discussions on a user's own talk page using the Beta feature. The Beta feature option remains available for users who want to deactivate Structured Discussions. This is part of Structured Discussions' deprecation work. [39]
- There will be full support for redirects in the Module namespace. The "Move Page" feature will leave an appropriate redirect behind, and such redirects will be appropriately recognized by the software (e.g. hidden from Special:UnconnectedPages). There will also be support for manual redirects. [40]
Future changes
- The MediaWiki JavaScript documentation is moving to a new format. During the move, you can read the old docs using version 1.41. Feedback about the new site is welcome on the project talk page.
- The Wishathon is a new initiative that encourages collaboration across the Wikimedia community to develop solutions for wishes collected through the Community Wishlist Survey. The first community Wishathon will take place from 15–17 March. If you are interested in a project proposal as a user, developer, designer, or product lead, you can register for the event and read more.

Question from 혜의성 (05:30, 20 December 2023)
Hello. I noticed the page for Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess does not feature the Korean version in the list of regions, when KR was a seperate region with its own region lock. I want to add it, however, all "proof" for this version existing is either in the form of horrendous quality youtube videos, or web.archive old nintendo website release confirmations. Is web.archive a valid source on wikipedia? --혜의성 (talk) 05:30, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
- @혜의성: Hey there! I'm not sure honestly. I would as over at the talk page for the video games WikiProject. They would know more than I do. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 15:32, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
Question from Neba Wilson (09:38, 21 December 2023)
Hello there, How can I add new images and a brief introduction of myself on wikipedia as a musical artist ? --Neba Wilson (talk) 09:38, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Neba Wilson: Hi there! First, to upload a new Image i'd recommend taking a look at Help:Uploading images. Second, Wikipedia isn't the place to introduce yourself as a musical artist as there's a very real chance you aren't notable according to our criteria. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 15:39, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Pages that use the JSON contentmodel will now use tabs instead of spaces for auto-indentation. This will significantly reduce the page size. [44]
- Gadgets and personal user scripts may now use JavaScript syntax introduced in ES6 (also known as "ES2015") and ES7 ("ES2016"). MediaWiki validates the source code to protect other site functionality from syntax errors, and to ensure scripts are valid in all supported browsers. Previously, Gadgets could use the
requiresES6
option. This option is no longer needed and will be removed in the future. [45] - Bot passwords and owner-only OAuth consumers can now be restricted to allow editing only specific pages. [46]
- You can now thank edits made by bots. [47]
- An update on the status of the Community Wishlist Survey for 2024 has been published. Please read and give your feedback.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 January. It will be on all wikis from 18 January (calendar). [48][49]
- Starting on January 17, it will not be possible to login to Wikimedia wikis from some specific old versions of the Chrome browser (versions 51–66, released between 2016 and 2018). Additionally, users of iOS 12, or Safari on Mac OS 10.14, may need to login to each wiki separately. [50]
- The
jquery.cookie
module was deprecated and replaced with themediawiki.cookie
module last year. A script has now been run to replace any remaining uses, and this week the temporary alias will be removed. [51]
Future changes
- Wikimedia Deutschland is working to make reusing references easier. They are looking for people who are interested in participating in individual video calls for user research in January and February.

It's all theories that aren't proven and can't be proven
There's nothing "more plausible" or "rather", WE DON'T KNOW AT ALL. Medieval authors never left anything about that. 5.173.4.130 (talk) 20:30, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
- Not only is that not true but your grammar isn't good at all. We have ways of finding things out. "more plausible" is generally referring to theories that are more widely accepted. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 20:35, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
It's totally true. If you know of any evidence for or contra of any of these theories, show it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Merlin#On_the_talk_page (there's no such evidence, not in the stories, not in the medieval commentaries nor a anyhwere). "Widely accepted" according to whom? The ref citing Jean Markale, the rival theorist, who was a highly controversial person? Half of his Wikipedia article is "Controversy" section! And no, your "less accepted" Gaston Paris was much higher regarded (3 times Nobel Prize nominee). But I didn't even change it make Paris "more plausible" thab Markale in turn, because WE DON'T KNOW.
Just revert it back and do whatever grammar fixes you want.

Recent changes
- Starting Monday January 29, all talk pages messages' timestamps will become a link. This link is a permanent link to the comment. It allows users to find the comment they are looking for, even if this comment was moved elsewhere. This will affect all wikis except for the English Wikipedia. You can read more about this change on Diff or on Mediawiki.org. [55]
- There are some improvements to the CAPTCHA to make it harder for spam bots and scripts to bypass it. If you have feedback on this change, please comment on the task. Staff are monitoring metrics related to the CAPTCHA, as well as secondary metrics such as account creations and edit counts.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 31 January. It will be on all wikis from 1 February (calendar). [56][57]
- On February 1, a link will be added to the "Tools" menu to download a QR code that links to the page you are viewing. There will also be a new Special:QrCode page to create QR codes for any Wikimedia URL. This addresses the #19 most-voted wish from the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [58]
- Gadgets which only work in some skins have sometimes used the
targets
option to limit where you can use them. This will stop working this week. You should use theskins
option instead. [59]

Recent changes
- The mobile site history pages now use the same HTML as the desktop history pages. If you hear of any problems relating to mobile history usage please point them to the phabricator task.
- On most wikis, admins can now block users from making specific actions. These actions are: uploading files, creating new pages, moving (renaming) pages, and sending thanks. The goal of this feature is to allow admins to apply blocks that are adequate to the blocked users' activity. Learn more about "action blocks". [60][61]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 February. It will be on all wikis from 8 February (calendar). [62][63]
- Talk pages permalinks that included diacritics and non-Latin script were malfunctioning. This issue is fixed. [64]
Future changes
- 24 Wikipedias with Reference Tooltips as a default gadget are encouraged to remove that default flag. This would make Reference Previews the new default for reference popups, leading to a more consistent experience across wikis. For 46 Wikipedias with less than 4 interface admins, the change is already scheduled for mid-February, unless there are concerns. The older Reference Tooltips gadget will still remain usable and will override this feature, if it is available on your wiki and you have enabled it in your settings. [65][66]

Question from Frosty45 (19:10, 19 February 2024)
Hi --Frosty45 (talk) 19:10, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
hello!
hello to you, user! I was looking at the adopt me page on Wikipedia and thought I could be adopted by you (if you want too)! I like editing articles on Taiwanese articles because their english articles could be a lot better and more organised (and until a few hours ago, I've been obsessively adding userboxes to my user page haha). I've edited with IPs before, but understood all the WP:(insert something) language and I hope if you adopt me (or if you choose not to), I could learn a couple of things from you too! Thank you for considering and reading my application, please ask me more questions should you want/need to! Cheers to you! Joséthewikier (talk) 09:30, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Joséthewikier: Hi there Jose! I'd be happy to adopt you. I"m not very well versed in Taiwanese culture but I'd be happy to help you if you need any help. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 14:41, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
- It'd be a great pleasure for you to adopt me! I hope I'll be a great and fast-learing adoptee! I think the first thing is that I like to use the Chinese wikipedia articles and add information (and sources) to English wiki but I think it requires me to be extended confirmed user, which I am not. I think that's all for now! If there's anything I should know before editing Wikipedia (I already read the 5 pillars and some others), please tell me! Thank you! Joséthewikier (talk) 18:17, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Blaze Wolf i'm sorry i forgot to tag! Joséthewikier (talk) 02:47, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Joséthewikier: Thanks for the ping, for whatever reason I was not notified when you replied here on my talk page. You don't necessarily have to be extended-confrimed to take things from the Chinese Wikipedia and put them on the English Wikipedia. You're mistaking it for the translation tool which does require you to be extended-confirmed. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 12:10, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
