Professor Sarah Dunlop (born 8 November 1953), is an Australian neuroscientist. She is the Winthrop Professor, the Head of the School/Head of Experimental and Regenerative Neurosciences at the School of Animal Biology, The University of Western Australia (2013-2018). Her key research area is neurotrauma, focusing on the understanding, preventing and promoting functional recovery after traumatic injury to the nervous system. She leads an integrated program of basic science and clinical research at the University of Western Australia and the Royal Perth Hospital. She Chairs the Clinical Trials Committee of the Spinal Cord Injury Network. She was the President of Australian Neuroscience Society (2010-2011), President of the Federation of Asian Oceanian Neuroscience Societies (2011-2013) and current Chair of the University of Western Australia Neuroscience Discipline.
Early life and Education[edit]
Professor Dunlop completed her BSc (Hons) in Zoology at King’s College London in 1974. In 1978, she completed her PhD in Zoology at the Queen Elizabeth College.
Work[edit]
In 1979, Professor Dunlop began her neuroscience career at the Department of Psychology, The University of Western Australia. Over the span of her research career, she made influential contributions to a number of medical practices worldwide, which include premature baby survival, spinal cord injury recovery and treatment of drug seeking behaviour. Her research encompassed both basic science and clinical research. Laboratory-based basic science research involves studying rodent models to understand and prevent the spread of secondary damage of surviving tissues after taumatic injury to the nervous system. These studies use technologies that include red light, pulsed magnetic fields and nanotechnology to target drug delivery. Professor Dunlop is actively involved in two multi-centre clinical trials focused on spinal cord injury: the 'Spinal Cord Injury and Physical Activity (SCIPA)' and '(ICED) Immediate Cooling and Emergency Decompression'.
