Cast[edit]

Plot[edit]

In modern day Manhattan, a carpenter called Jesus gains a following through his message of charity, compassion and spirituality. One of his followers, Judas, becomes increasingly disillusioned with Jesus, believing he is not truly embodying his message and concerned that his followers' Messiah-like perception of him has gone to his head. Meanwhile, religious leaders and the social elite (referred to as The Pharisees), who worry that Jesus' popularity threatens the societal status quo that keeps them in power, all agree that he must be dealt with.

Jesus, who believes in a higher power with whom he communicates, is greeted by adoring crowds when he and his followers arrive in town for passover week. After rejecting the suggestion of Simon to instigate an uprising, Jesus is shocked by the desecration and disrespect of a synagogue and commits assault of those misusing the temple. He goes into hiding, where he meets with the city's sickly homeless population, who ask him to heal them. Exhausted, he is comforted by Mary Magdalane, who acknowledges she loves him and that it frightens her.

While the Pharisees use their influence to portray Jesus as a deranged and dangerous criminal, Judas meets with them to express his concerns over Jesus's erratic behaviour and the consequences of associating him; he is offered money and protection in exchange for giving up Jesus. At a passover seder, Jesus predicts that he will be betrayed by one of his followers, the rest will abandon him and he will die after that. He clashes with Judas, who accuses him of losing sight of his cause, then asks the higher power if he has truly made a difference and, if he is to die, what that will achieve. Receiving no answers, he consigns himself to his fate. The gathering is raided by police and Judas points out Jesus, who allows himself to be arrested.

Out of the jurisdiction of district judge Pontius Pilate, Jesus's case is heard by corrupt politician Herod (Jack Black), who mocks his public image and labels him a fraud when he can't perform miracles. Seeing the cruel treatment of Jesus, Judas is overcome with guilt at having betrayed a righteous man for money and hangs himself. In despair after denying having known Jesus, Peter and the rest of Jesus's friends wish they could return to an earlier time when there was peace and hope.

Herod bribes Pilate into prosecuting Jesus; he finds him delusional but innocent, yet the people of the city demand he be convicted. Unable to quell the masses and with Jesus refusing to defend himself, Pilate reluctantly orders his execution. As Jesus is led away he is overwhelmed by crowds who have gathered to mock him. Struck on the head by a projectile, Jesus falls to the ground where, staring up at the sky, he proclaims his mission is finished and commends his spirit to the higher power - which he recognizes to be his father. He dies, but those who remained faithful to him continue to spread his message.
