Jake Davis (Born July 20, 1992) is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer from Los Angeles, California. He first gained recognition for his cover of Hozier’s “Work Song” on CandyRat Records.[1] In June 2016, Davis won Santa Monica’s Emerging Artist Competition, securing a spot with Save Ferris and Cibo Matto at the Twilight Concert Series on the Santa Monica Pier. Life and Career[edit]
Jake Davis was raised in Sherman Oaks, California. Growing up he taught himself to play guitar, piano, bass, drums, ukulele, and mandolin. At age 16, Davis fast-tracked his way out of The Buckley School and went on to produce many local bands at his alma mater UCLA. He graduated in 2013 with a degree in Literature and Music.[3]
Davis began his solo career in 2015 with his cover of Hozier’s “Work Song” and a series of other guest performance videos under indie music label CandyRat Records.[4] This worldwide exposure earned him his first official gig: a residency at the popular Los Angeles venue, The Satellite.[5] Davis writes and produces his own music. He can be seen performing live with Los Angeles musicians and self-proclaimed “best-friends” James Harmon, Eddy Barco, and Jordan Meltzer.[6]
The Valley EP[edit]
In the summer of 2016, Davis announced his debut EP: The Valley. Co-produced with Dekku in the San Fernando Valley, the EP was aptly named after it’s birthplace.[7] Davis has been known to express brash fondness for his hometown, claiming he “waves the flag of suburbia with no shame.”[8] The Valley’s lead single “Saying It Right” premiered on August 9, 2016.[9] “Beneath the light hearted melodies the lyrics deal with insecurity and struggling to connect, albeit in a cool and collected way. ‘Saying it Right’ displays a level of production and musicianship above what you would expect for such a shamelessly addictive pop song.”[10]
