Approach[edit]

There are two possible approaches. We can select to develop an article that is relevant just to our class and use a private wiki to create it. Alternatively, we can select to develop an article relevant to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia and hope that we can get it instantiated after external moderation.   • Let's put less focus on how we can enhance our lives with Web 2.0 application tools and look into how we can improve the current Web 2.0 technology into the next generation of tools (a.k.a Web 3.0).   • Web 2.0 - manpower for free
    • Inspired by what Jason said in the last lecture about Flickr and photo tagging, the idea of this article is to deal with the reasons/incentives for people delivering content, participating in the value-added process (prosumer) and suchlike in their free time and the opportunities for organisations (such as companies, NGOs, research institutions) to integrate such unpaid manpower into their value-added processes either by modifying existing business models or by establishing new business models in the Web 2.0 environment. Why and how do people participate? What are the incentives in different settings (do people have to be idealistic/self-interested/communicative to participate)? What are their benefits? How can companies take advantage? How do they have to change existing business models? Which new kinds of business models come up?

  • Web 2.0 and privacy - In my opinion one of the most important topics to discuss concerning Web 2.0 applications: How did Web 2.0 change our attitude to publish intimate information to everyone? Which kind of risks come along with it? Is it defensible that the trade with private information becomes a new business model? [Fabian Kirstein]
  • Read an interesting blog posted by Dan Howe, Link to blog post, his article is based on how social media and other Web 2.0 tools are being utilised during a natural disaster or an emergency situation. The article also specifically goes into greater details about Google's Person Finder which I personally found it very intriguing. Having said all that, I thought we, as a class, could further enhance our knowledge on how Web 2.0 could be useful in an emergency situation or a natural disaster. [Ton Phuong]

Depending on class vote (Internal vs. External)

  • (Internal) University 2.0 - Developing a university 2.0 framework that integrates web 2.0 in a way that reflects the design patterns established by oreilly. Most of the technologies required for harnessing these patterns already exist at QUT, therefore developing a comprehensive framework that enabled evolving subjects that never fall behind the eight ball could pose several benefits.
  • (External) Mobile Web 2.0 - Leveraging off the the mobile web (Strategies, Tools, Technologies etc)
  • Do some comparison in the Web 2.0 content. For example, How young people are understanding and using Web 2.0(social media) different with their elder? How Web 2.0 applications effect the organization different with individual? What the Web 3.0 will be different with the Web 2.0? [Geng Gao]
