Origin[edit]

Prior to 1994, journalists and writers were using the term dark metal to describe a style of metal or classify the somber or negatively-themed music of certain bands. For instance, heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath attracted the label due to their horror and occult-themed lyrics and imagery. The thing that solidified dark metal into a recognized genre is the release of Bethlehem's album of the same name. After that release in 1994, any band with a style of metal similar to that of Bethlehem might be placed into the genre of dark metal, and many writers consider the band Bethlehem to be the originators of the dark metal genre.

In the Title[edit]

I decided to search using "musik" instead of "music" on the hunch that there might be German sources. I was right.

  • Keller, Irina Elisabeth (2010). "Mein Geist entflieht in Welten, die nicht sterben": Epochenbezüge zur christlichen und schwarzen Romantik sowie zum Expressionismus in den Texten deutschsprachiger Gothic- und DarkMetal-Bands und Bands der Neuen Deutschen Härte ["My mind escapes into worlds that do not die":References to the Christian era and dark Romanticism and Expressionism in the texts of German Gothic and Dark Metal bands and bands of the New German Hardness]. Herbert Utz Verlag. ISBN 9783831609819.

Quotes from the Book[edit]

  • Zusammenfassend ließe sich sagen, daß die Gothic-Bewegung mit den Jahren immer vielschichtiger und vielseitiger geworden ist, so daß sie unzählige Musikbereiche (Genres)
  • In summary, it could be said that the Goth movement over the years has become increasingly complex and varied, so that they enjoy countless more music areas/genres/classifications (List)
  • Dennoch können nicht alle Bands dieser Genres – vor allem beim Dark-Metal oder Industrial – zwangsweise mit dem Etikett Gothic-Musik versehen werden.
  • Translation: Nevertheless, not all the bands in these genres - especially dark metal and Industrial music - have had the Gothic music label forced on them.

Black Sabbath picked up the torch in the early '70s, Motorhead in the mid-'70s, and then Metallica in the early '80s. It was Metallica that opened the floodgates to this latest heavy metal subgenre, generally termed thrash metal, dark metal or death metal: fast, bone-crunching, hard rock played with ferocity, strewn with violent, bloody imagery. In rushed the bands like Megadeth and Slayer -- both at the top rungs of the subgenre -- and after them a slew of others: Dark Angel, Mordred, Carcass, Celtic Frost, GWAR, Annihilator, Overkill, Exodus, Sepultura, Testament, Sacred Reich, Danzig, Napalm Death, Type O Negative and Voivoid. {{cite journal}}: Cite journal requires |journal= (help)
