Groups[edit]

Three significant groups of Mandalorians appear throughout the Star Wars franchise: Mandalorian warriors, New Mandalorians, and Death Watch. Mandalorian warriors wear an iconic armor and typically work as mercenaries, assassins, and bounty hunters. New Mandalorians are a pacifist group who wish to separate Mandalore from its warrior past. Death Watch is a group of Mandalorian warriors who wish to restore Mandalore to its former glory; in Legends, this refers to restoring Mandalore as a major military power, and in The Clone Wars this refers to a rejection of New Mandalorian pacifism and a return to the warrior ways.

Mandalorian warriors[edit]

Mandalorian warriors are a cultural group identified by their iconic armor. Their traditions are reflective of a historically nomadic people who often worked as mercenaries, bounty hunters, and assassins, and many individuals continue to work in those professions. During the Clone Wars, many also served as instructors for the clone trooper army. They have strict code of honor, but they are typically characterized as opportunistic, seeking arrangements that ensure their survival as individuals, small groups, or a people. Mandalorian warriors have a clan system; in Rebels, clans are organized into larger houses, for example Clan Wren of House Vizsla. To separate Mandalore from its warrior past, the New Mandalorians abandoned the warrior traditions and exiled those who refused to do the same to Mandalore's moon Concordia.^{TCW 2.12} The Protectors, a group of Mandalorian warriors introduced in Rebels, controls the Concord Dawn system in the Mandalore sector.

In Legends, the warrior clans are led by a sole ruler called the Mand'alor, or Mandalore, who must have the support of the warrior clans to assume the title. Throughout various works, the position is held by Canderous Ordo, Jango Fett, Fenn Shysa, and Boba Fett. In Republic Commando and Legacy of the Force, to be considered Mandalorian, one must abide by six tenets, including wearing Mandalorian armor and speaking Mando'a. To lose one's Mandalorian heritage, so being not Mandalorian, is considered equivalent to losing one's soul. Adoption occurs frequently, leading to a great diversity in species, and bloodlines and blood relations are deemphasized. They are depicted as highly family-centric. Due to millennia of war with the Jedi, Mandalorian warriors culturally carry a hatred of Force-users.

Boba Fett[edit]

Boba Fett is a bounty hunter. He first appears in The Empire Strikes Back, in which he is hired by Darth Vader to capture Han Solo, and he is ultimately apparently killed in Return of the Jedi. Boba appears as a child in Attack of the Clones, which reveals he is a clone of bounty hunter Jango Fett and raised as Jango's son. He lives on Kamino with Jango and flees with him to Geonosis, where he witnesses Jedi Mace Windu kill Jango. Boba swears revenge and plots to kill Windu, as depicted in The Clone Wars television series. To achieve this goal, Boba seeks aid from Jango's bounty hunter associates and finally becomes a bounty hunter himself. Boba also appears extensively throughout the Legends expanded universe, and several works depict his survival of the events in Return of the Jedi and his life afterward. In The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, he is played by Jeremy Bulloch. Daniel Logan plays Boba as a child in Attack of the Clones and voices him in The Clone Wars television series.

Jango Fett[edit]

Jango Fett is a bounty hunter and assassin hired to be the template for the clone army. In Attack of the Clones, he is hired to assassinate Senator Padmé Amidala, and he subcontracts the job to Zam Wesell, who he kills after she fails. Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi tracks Jango to Kamino, and Jango flees to Geonosis with his clone son, Boba. Jango is ultimately killed by Jedi Mace Windu on Geonosis. He is featured throughout the Legends expanded universe, in which he vehemently opposes and nearly eliminates Death Watch and holds the position of Mand'alor, leader of the warrior clans, until his death. Jango is played by Temuera Morrison.

Sabine Wren[edit]

Sabine Wren is a graffiti artist, explosives expert, and member of the Ghost crew under the call sign Spectre 5. Though she is a member of House Vizsla and her mother was a member of Death Watch, Sabine does not support Death Watch. She was enrolled as a cadet in the Imperial Academy established on Mandalore, and she eventually escaped the Academy, an act that is said to have shamed her mother and family. She worked as a bounty hunter with fellow escapee Ketsu Onyo but ultimately joined Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla as anti-Imperial rebels. She recovers the darksaber, an ancient lightsaber and symbol of power in House Vizsla, from Darth Maul in season three. Though she turns it into Kanan's care, Fenn Rau encourages that she be taught to wield it, hoping that she will unite House Vizsla, call the Mandalorian people together, and lead them to fight the Empire. She is voiced by Tiya Sircar.

Ketsu Onyo[edit]

Ketsu Onyo is a bounty hunter employed by the Black Sun criminal organization. She attended and escaped the Imperial Academy on Mandalore alongside Sabine Wren, and the two worked as bounty hunters until Ketsu betrayed Sabine and left her for dead. Sabine, however, forgives Ketsu and offers her a second chance at a better life. With their reconciliation, Ketsu agrees to help Sabine in the future and, in one episode, she aids the Rebel Alliance fleet against the Empire. She is voiced by Gina Torres.

Fenn Rau[edit]

Fenn Rau is a pilot and leader of the Protectors. In exchange for their cooperation against the Rebel Alliance, the Empire grants the Protectors control of the Concord Dawn system. The Rebel Alliance seeks his permission to pass through the system, but the convoy is attacked. Sabine Wren confronts Rau, and he is ultimately captured. Knowing that his capture will trigger an Imperial takeover of Concord Dawn, he instructs the Protectors to keep his capture a secret and allows the rebels to pass through the system. While he is held prisoner, he refuses to join the Rebel Alliance and emphasizes that he struck deals with both sides for the survival of his people. In his absence, the Protectors are attacked and eliminated by Gar Saxon. Rau initially blames the Rebel Alliance for leaving his people without his leadership and protection, but he eventually learns that Saxon intended to destroy the Protectors regardless of his presence. Heartened by Sabine's display of Mandalorian values, Rau ultimately joins the Rebel Alliance. Upon learning that Sabine recovered the darksaber, an ancient lightsaber and symbol of power in House Viszla, he pledges loyalty to Sabine requests that Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus teach Sabine to wield it, hoping that she will unite House Vizsla, call the Mandalorian people together, and lead them to fight the Empire.

Rau was introduced simultaneously in the tenth issue of the Kanan - The Last Padawan comic and the Rebels episode "Protectors of Concord Dawn", both released the same day.^[1] He is voiced by Kevin McKidd.

Death Watch[edit]

Death Watch, as seen in The Clone Wars television series, is a group of Mandalorian warriors that opposes New Mandalorian pacifism. It believes that those who maintain the traditional warrior lifestyle are True Mandalorians and wishes to restore Mandalore to its warrior past. Led by Pre Vizsla, Death Watch remains in hiding on Concordia until the Clone Wars, during which it ultimately deposes Duchess Satine Kryze and retakes the planet with aid from Darth Maul and Savage Opress. However, Maul kills Vizsla in a formal duel, winning leadership of Death Watch and control of Mandalore. This creates a schism in the group: Bo-Katan Kryze declares that an outsider cannot rule Mandalore and leads some members to break away, and the remainder, bound by honor and tradition, follow Maul. Though Death Watch upholds the warrior traditions, the Protectors, another group of Mandalorian warriors, denounce Death Watch as traitors.

Death Watch is organized into smaller units, such as the Nite Owls led by Bo-Katan.

In Legends, Death Watch wishes to reinstate Mandalore as an empire.

Pre Vizsla[edit]

Pre Vizsla is the governor of Concordia and the leader of Death Watch. He initially appears to support Satine and New Mandalorian ideals, but he truly wishes to restore Mandalore's warrior heritage.^{TCW 2.12} He is in possession of an ancient Jedi darksaber, passed down through his family, and he uses it to duel and kill Jedi and Sith. He eventually deposes Satine and takes control of Mandalore, but Maul invokes a Mandalorian custom, challenging Vizsla to a duel to the death for control of both Death Watch and Mandalore. Bound by honor as a Mandalorian soldier, he accepts and, upon his defeat, gladly submits to his death. He is voiced by Jon Favreau.

Bo-Katan Kryze[edit]

Bo-Katan Kryze is the leader of the Nite Owls, a group within Death Watch, and Satine's sister. When Maul kills Vizsla in a duel and assumes control of Death Watch and Mandalore, Bo-Katan leads a minority within Death Watch to defect, declaring that an outsider shall never rule Mandalore. She frees Satine from prison, enabling her to contact Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi before Satine's recapture, and when Obi-Wan himself is captured, Bo-Katan frees him and helps him escape back to Coruscant. She urges him to alert the Senate of Maul's presence on Mandalore and of the outbreak of civil war in Sundari, accepting that it will trigger a Republic invasion of the planet.

Bo-Katan returns in Rebels season three.

She is voiced by Katee Sackhoff.

New Mandalorians[edit]

The New Mandalorians are the political and cultural leaders of Mandalore in The Clone Wars television series. To distance themselves from Mandalore's warrior past, they abandoned the traditional Mandalorian armor and cultural practices and instead adopted pacifistic ideals. The group exiled those who refused to do the same to Mandalore's moon Concordia.^{TCW 2.12}

Satine Kryze[edit]

Duchess Satine Kryze of Kalevala is the New Mandalorian leader of Mandalore, introduced in season two of The Clone Wars. She commits herself to keeping Mandalore neutral during the Clone Wars and independent from Republic control, and she leads the Council of Neutral Systems.^{TCW 2.12} She is characterized as staunchly pacifist though willing to defend herself when necessary, unafraid of Death Watch, and intolerant of corruption. She is also characterized as critical of the Jedi Order's role as peacekeeping group, believing that it does not properly serve this role. In her youth, Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi were tasked with protecting her during a period of civil war. She fell in love with Obi-Wan, who secretly returns her love, and she maintains this love throughout her life. She is eventually deposed by Pre Vizsla, and she is ultimately killed by Darth Maul with the intent to hurt Obi-Wan.

Satine's character design is based on an abandoned Padmé Amidala design concept by Iain McCaig for Episode I: The Phantom Menace.^[2] Her bearing and demeanor was inspired by Cate Blanchett's performance as Elizabeth I in Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Satine is voiced by Anna Graves.
