When using quotations:
DO:
Verifiably attribute quotations to a reliable source
Attribute quotes in the main text, not in a footnote
Say in original words if possible; only use quotes where they add something
Always put non-original wording in quotes
Indicate alterations with [brackets] and ...ellipses...
Indicate whether emphasis is added, or in the original
Use quotations to present controversial statements
Provide context for quotes in original prose


DON'T:
Don't misrepresent the meaning or intent of a quote
Don't italicize quotes unless the material calls for it
Don't use overly long quotations; paraphrase instead
Don't use too many quotations
