Harry Gallagher (born July 5, 1997), known online as Night Scape or NightScape, is a YouTube personality, urban explorer, photographer, and entrepreneur based in London, England. Gallagher engages in parkour and free climbing on various buildings and structures around the world. He also completes "overnight challenges", where he and his friends infiltrate and explore various commercial properties after standard business hours. Gallagher documents his adventures with a GoPro camera.

Early Life[edit]

Gallagher was born on July 5, 1997 in Barkingside, a small district in East London, England.[1] He attended St. Paul's Way Trust School, an all-through school located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. His parents separated when he was 4. From age 11, Gallagher engaged in freerunning, a subset of parkour.[2] Eventually, this interest developed into free climbing with elements of urban exploration and photography.

YouTube[edit]

Gallagher posts videos on his YouTube channel, "Night Scape", often on a biweekly basis. His videos generally relate to at least one of the following topics: (1) free climbing, where he and his friends infiltrate and ascend commercial properties, such as shopping malls, skyscrapers, and condominiums, without using climbing equipment; (2) video blogs, where he discusses or engages in "overnight challenges", urban exploration, photography, and other related topics; and (3) parkour, where he demonstrates his acrobatic manoeuvres.

Gallagher explains that his philosophy is to "just have fun with [urban exploration]. That's all that matters."[3] This philosophy of individual liberty, exploration, and enjoyment underpins his channel. Dr. Bradley Garrett, an American social and cultural geographer at the University of Sydney and columnist for The Guardian, affirms Gallagher's philosophy. Garrett suggests that many urban explorers, including Gallagher, engage in usufruct, a legal concept in some civil law jurisdictions that permits individuals to "use and enjoy the property of another, provided it is not changed or damaged in any way."[4][5]

Early Years (2014–2015)[edit]

On September 17, 2014, Gallagher created his YouTube channel, "Night Scape". Initially, Gallagher only produced parkour videos, which depict him performing various acrobatic manoeuvres, such as jumping, hopping, flipping, and sliding.[6] The setting of most of these videos is open terrain, and these videos feature pop or hip hop music as well as limited commentary. In late-2014, Gallagher achieved 100,000 subscribers. Near the end of 2014, he stopped creating parkour videos, but he diversified into other related topics.

Diversification (2015–2017)[edit]

Since mid-2015, Gallagher began creating urban exploration and free climbing videos. With a group of friends, Gallagher infiltrates, explores, ascends, and descends various buildings around the world, such as the Canary Wharf Tower in London, England; West Ham United Football Club in East London, England; Humber Bridge in Hull, England; and the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada.[7][8] In addition, Gallagher and his friends complete "overnight challenges", in which they enter a commercial property, hide until closing, and emerge upon closing. The group then explores the premises and documents their adventures. These videos feature a first-person point-of-view. In most cases, Gallagher also evades security guards and store personnel. In mid-2016, Gallagher began creating video blogs, where he discusses his day-to-day life as well as topics related to his adventures. At the end of 2017, Gallagher achieved 300,000 subscribers and 15,000,000 video views.

Continued Growth (2017–Present)[edit]

Gallagher's channel continued to grow throughout 2017. He continues to create videos related to urban exploration, free climbing, "overnight challenges", and video blogs. In general, each of his videos receives between 100,000 and 250,000 video views. As of March 22, 2018, Gallagher has roughly 800,000 subscribers and 34,000,000 video views, placing him at rank 7,926 and 59,592 in terms of subscribers and views, respectively.[9]

Online Store[edit]

In 2015, Gallagher created an online store. The site, which resembles a conventional online marketplace, sells various urban-themed and NightScape-branded merchandise, including clothing (e.g., hats, sweaters, and pants) and art (e.g., posters and canvas prints). Most of the merchandise features an imprint of Gallagher on various buildings and structures around the world. The site features a mailing list, which sends subscribers monthly updates, including upcoming sales, special events, new product launches, and special bonus codes.

Marketing[edit]

In 2016, Harry partnered with Palladium Boots, a footwear company based in California, US. The company's "boots using modern fabrics and materials" cater to "modern day explorers".[10] Harry has appeared in several short films and marketing campaigns for the company.

Personal Life[edit]

Gallagher's mother, Amanda Gallagher, is a glass mosaic artist.[11] Gallagher earns roughly $12,000 annually producing YouTube videos.[12] Gallagher did not pursue higher education; however, his older brother, Nathan Gallagher, graduated from Nottingham University, majoring in Philosophy.[13]

Criticism[edit]

In late 2016, Gallagher collaborated with Louis Cole, a controversial filmmaker and YouTube personality, to scale a skyscraper in London, England. Critics called the pair's climb "ignorant" and "alarming".[14] Cole drew controversy for creating videos in North Korea that depict him and his friends pranking the military; performing a conga line in the Grand People's Study House, a central library in Pyongyang, North Korea; and writing songs about surfing in North Korea.[15]

In early 2017, Gallagher climbed the Cayan Tower, a 75-story skyscraper in Dubai, the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates. Critics argued that this climb was "reckless" and "stupid".[16] Police in Dubai are currently investigating this climb.
