Doxycycline has been demonstrated to reduce both in vitro and animal model in vivo growth of cancer cells, possibly through G1 cell cycle arrest. Doxycycline and other tetracyclines are also highly osteotropic, and in animal models of breast cancer bone metastases, doxycycline treatments have reduced tumour growth in the bone.

Experimental applications[edit]

At subantimicrobial doses, doxycycline is an inhibitor of matrix metalloproteases, and has been used in various experimental systems for this purpose, such as for recalcitrant recurrent corneal erosions.[1] Doxycycline has been used successfully in the treatment of one patient with lymphangioleiomyomatosis, an otherwise progressive and fatal disease.[2]

Osteotropism[edit]

Osteotropism refers to the tendency of a substance or cell to localize in bone. This is a feature of multiple drugs that can utilize their osteotropic properties to treat diseases of the bone. These include bisphosphonates, tetracyclines,

Education[edit]

Public education for students from kindergarten through high school is administered by the Trillium Lakelands District School Board, which oversees the town's single high school, Huntsville High School, and six elementary schools.[10] Primary Catholic education at a single school is administered by the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board.[11] There are several private schools that serve students through elementary and high school ages.[12]

Post-secondary education is comprised of the Waterloo Summit Centre for the Environment, established with funding provided by the 2010 G8 Summit Legacy Fund as a partnership between the Town of Huntsville and the University of Waterloo. This facility is utilized by researchers and students of the University of Waterloo and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.[13]

The Huntsville District Memorial Hospital is a community teaching hospital affiliated with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.[14]

Oncodynamics[edit]

Oncodynamics is a developing field of study within oncology that is focused on the effects of cancers on normal physiology. These effects are initiated though chemical or physical disturbances initiated by the behaviour or presence of a cancer and are investigated independently of the considerable effects on physiology of of cancer treatments. Oncodynamics is distinct from oncokinetics which is the study of the mechanisms of cancer.[18]

Oncodynamic effects include angiogenesis, neurogenesis, pain, fatigue, depression, and cachexia. These conditions can have significant effects on cancer patient survival and quality of life.

National Advisory Committee on Immunization[edit]

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is a national advisory committee of experts in the fields of pediatrics, infectious diseases, immunology, pharmacy, nursing, epidemiology, pharmacoeconomics, social science and public health. The Committee reports to the Vice-President of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Branch, and works with staff of the Centre for Immunization and Respiratory Infectious Diseases of the Public Health Agency of Canada to provide ongoing and timely medical, scientific and public health advice.

NACI makes recommendations for the use of vaccines currently or newly approved for use in humans in Canada, including the identification of groups at risk for vaccine-preventable diseases for whom vaccination should be targeted. NACI knowledge syntheses, analyses and recommendations on vaccine use in Canada are included in published literature reviews, statements and updates. NACI recommendations are also published in the Canadian Immunization Guide. Email updates are available through our mailing list.[19]
