Sierra Heritage Magazine[edit]

Facts[edit]

Sierra Heritage is a magazine and web site that features articles and photography about the magnificent Sierra Nevada Mountains and the foothill and mountain communities that populate the region. Founded in 1981 and published six times a year, Sierra Heritage Magazine[1] is the oldest and largest circulation publication in the Sierra Nevada. Additional Sierra Heritage publications include At Home – Living & Design Magazine, a resource guide for home design, construction and interior decorating, which is part of Sierra Heritage Magazine and is also over-run and distributed as a separate stand-alone publication; Sierra Events, an annual listing of events and activities in the Sierra region; and other custom publications. Sierra Heritage Magazine’s parent company is El Toyon, Inc.

Description[edit]

Sierra Heritage Magazine is a beautifully designed, glossy publication that covers the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains, the “Range of Light,” as John Muir referred to them, and the adjacent foothill communities in the Sierra region. Sierra Heritage includes articles and beautiful photography on places to see and visit in the area, as well as stories on the significant people, history and recreation options available.

The variety of stories and adventures to write about and photograph abound in the region. The Sierra is home to many world-class ski resorts, including Squaw Valley USA, site of the 1960 Winter Olympic Games, Alpine Meadows, Heavenly and Kirkwood ski resorts in the north, and some of the nation’s highest elevation ski areas to the south, Mammoth and June Lakes ski resorts. The Sierra also boasts some of the best High Country hiking trails in the world. The Mexico to Canada Pacific Coast Trail winds along the spine of the Sierra Nevada through Kings Canyon Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks and crosses many recognizable local trails and wilderness zones such as the John Muir Wilderness and Ansel Adams Wilderness areas.

World famous Lake Tahoe is one of the landmarks in the Sierra Nevada. With its famous blue waters, its many Lakeside resorts from comfortable to 5-star, world-class skiing and active nightlife, Lake Tahoe is one of the most visited destinations in the U.S.

Quaint Gold Rush communities dot the rolling western foothills of the Sierra Nevada and offer more interesting subject matter for Sierra Heritage Magazine. These small towns are a blend of small town Americana and the 1849 California Gold Rush that led to their establishment. Hwy 49, dubbed the ‘Golden Chain' by miners of the day, was the link between the towns of the northern, southern and Mother Lode mines in Western foothills. Today, Hwy 49 is one of the most historic and scenic drives in America. Driving through the Gold Rush era towns along the 'Golden Chain' provides a window to the past in the form of antique shops, period State Parks, museums, art galleries, B & Bs and local eateries from cafes to fine dining.
