Mohammad Irwan Serigar bin Abdullah (born 7 March 1957, Kota Bharu, Kelantan) also known as Mohd Irwan Serigar bin Abdullah, is the Secretary General of Treasury, Ministry of Finance of Malaysia since 2011. Irwan Serigar is best known as the Chairman of the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC) and founder and patron of the Global Entrepreneurship Movement (GEM), Malaysian Non-governmental organizations that act as networking platforms for entrepreneurs.[1][2] Irwan Serigar is the recipient of several national and state awards and distinctions including the Malaysian federal award of Grand Officer of the Order of Loyalty to the Crown of Malaysia (Malay: Panglima Setia Mahkota Malaysia – P.S.M.), Founding Grand Master and Grand Knight of the Order of Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang (S.S.A.P) and The Most Distinguished Order of the Loyalty to the Crown of Kelantan (Malay: Darjah Kebesaran Setia Mahkota Kelantan Yang Amat Terbilang – D.P.S.K.)

Education[edit]

Irwan Serigar received a Bachelor of Arts in Demography in 1982 from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. He received a Master of Science in Energy, Management and Policy from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received a Ph.D. degree in Economics from the International Islamic University Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. He also attended an advanced management program from Harvard Business School in Spring 2008.

Career[edit]

Irwan Serigar serves as an Executive Director of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia and Pendinginan Megajana Sdn Bhd. He served as the Deputy Under Secretary, Economics and International Division at Ministry of Finance since 2007 and also served as its Under Secretary of Economics and International Division since 2008.

Early career[edit]

Irwan Serigar began his career in the public sector at the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister’s Department in 1984. He started his career in the Prime Minister's Department as an Assistant director from 1984 to 1986, after which he served as Assistant director at the Industry Division of the Economic Planning Unit from 1986 to 1987. Later, he served as Senior assistant of the Director of Energy Division 1987 to 1998. Irwan Serigar also served as Senior assistant director of Privatisation Division for Economic Planning Unit at Prime Minister's Department since 1999. In 2003, he joined the Economics and International Division, Ministry of Finance as a Principal Assistant Secretary. From 2004 to 2006, Irwan Serigar served as the Head of Econometrics Section, Economics and International Division at Ministry of Finance and also served as its Head of Multi Lateral Relations, Economics and International Division since 2006, Deputy Secretary General (Policy) since 2011 and Secretary General of Treasury since 2012. Irwan Serigar served as Director at Felda Global Ventures Holdings Berhad from November 29, 2012 to July 16, 2013; Non-executive director at Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn. Bhd; Non-independent & Non-executive director at Padiberas Nasional Bhd from August 26, 2011 to April 2013. He also served as Non-Independent Non-Executive Director of AmanahRaya-JMF Asset Management Sdn Bhd, the Manager of AmanahRaya Real Estate Investment Trust since November 29, 2007.

Current career[edit]

In April 2016, The Wall Street Journal and Reuters anticipated that Irwan Serigar would replace Zeti Akhtar Aziz as the new Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the country central bank.[3][4] Irwan Serigar is the Chairman and member of the investment panel at Kumpulan Wang Persaraan since August 24, 2012. He serves as a member of the Blue Ocean Strategy Group of the Economic Planning Unit, Steering Committee of the PRO3-Based Learning Project, German-Malaysia Institute as well as the Strategic KPI and Panel on Strategic Planning, Ministry of Finance. Under his leadership, Malaysia was recognized in the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report 2017-2018.[5]

Irwan Serigar is the recipient of several awards and distinctions at the federal, state and administrative levels including the Economic Planning Unit, Excellence Service award (1989), Prime Minister’s Department, Excellence Service award (1989) Economic Planning Unit, Excellence Service Award (1996) Ministry of Finance, Excellence Service Award (2005). He also received the Best Paper award at the First International Conference of the Asian Academy of Applied Business in 2003.

Personal life[edit]

Irwan Serigar is married to Puan Sri Rohana Sulaiman, a medical doctor. His youngest son Mohd Nazshua (29), a medical doctor at the Emergency and Trauma Department in Shah Alam Hospital, married on July 7 , 2017 Mazlin Muhammad Sudin (29), an architect based in Kuala Lumpur. The religious wedding took place at the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque.[10] Irwan Serigar now resides in Putrajaya, FT with his family.
