Joseph Armstrong (born November 26, 1988), known professionally known as Joey Carbstrong, is an Australian animal rights activist and vegan. He is know for advocating for animal liberation and veganism through social media and public speaking engagements, and for his debates on the ethics of eating meat, especially during various televised interviews.

Personal life[edit]

Joseph Armstrong was born on November 26, 1988 in Adelaide, Australia.[1] He keeps information about his family private.[2] He has publicly stated that before his fame he was involved in substance abuse and crime. He spent 18 months under house arrest and later six months in prison, both for unknown convictions.[1] Inspired by the teachings of Dan McDonald, an American advocate for raw food and fasting, Carbstrong became vegan after his release from prison.[1]

Carbstrong has renounced his past, stating, "For 12 years of my life I went down the wrong track. ... As a vegan all I want is peace. Peace for humans, peace for animals and peace for the world."[3] In May 2017, he released a video to celebrate his completion of four years as a teetotaler.[1]

Animal rights advocacy[edit]

Carbstrong began his animal rights advocacy online in 2015 publishing his first video in April of that year. He has amassed millions of views on his YouTube videos on animal rights. He started his Instagram account in 2016 to further spread his animal rights advocacy using social media. Joey has been involved in street activism across the world promoting groups like Anonymous for the Voiceless and the Save Movement.

In January 2018, he began his 'Vegan Prophecy UK tour', which involve protesting against multiple slaughterhouses.[1] During which he had multiple televised appearances, including on the Jeremy Vine Show,[4] This Morning,[5] and Good Morning Britain.[6]

During one slaughter protest he stated, "Slaughterhouses are usually on the outskirts of towns and hidden away. I am sure if they had glass walls not so many people would be eating flesh. We are here to bear witness to the animals being sent to slaughter. We take their photos and show them to the public so they know where the meat they are eating comes from. These animals are individuals and they want to live. We don’t need meat to survive and we hope to make people think more about the food choices they make."[7]

Slaughterhouse worker exploitation concerns[edit]

The Vegan Society has noted, “by extension, [veganism] promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans.”[14] Many ethical vegans and vegan organizations cite the poor working conditions of slaughterhouse workers as a reason to reject animal products.[15] Mercy For Animals has especially been a leading voice, producing multiple publications that advocate for veganism to support slaughterhouse workers.[16][17] In 2016, Maya Gibson, a representative of Vegan Australia, wrote, “Not only do animals suffer when they are treated as commodities, but so do humans, in many different ways. Please take the logical and compassionate next step and go vegan.”[18] In a 2018 opinion piece by The Guardian, vegan journalist Chas Newkey-Burden has said, “Few are even aware of the plight of slaughter workers. But market forces are simple – every time you put meat in your shopping trolley, you are funding the slaughter, globally, of 70bn [sic] farmed animals each year, the destruction of the environment and yes, the exploitation of vulnerable workers.”[19] In a report by Oxfam America, slaughterhouse workers were observed not being allowed breaks, were often required to wear diapers, and were paid below minimum wage.[20] In reference to this issue, PETA has said, “Animal rights are human rights, too. … Whether out of concern for the animals or the workers, the conscionable choice that anyone shocked by this report can make is to go vegan.” [21]
