Hi[edit]

Hi there,

thanks for saying hello, I'm not really new on Wikipedia, have been editing the Polish and German Wikis for about three months. Shaqspeare 23:05, 21 July 2005 (UTC)

Ah. Still, welcome to the English Wiki :) Redwolf24 23:05, 21 July 2005 (UTC)

Hi, From FishFace[edit]

Uh, hi...

I also have been here for quite a time... Not particularly active, but I edit here and there :) Thus, I already new the gubbins about tildes and so on. With that, thanks and goodbye! Fish-Face 23:13, 21 July 2005 (UTC)

Glad to bbe of service. Redwolf24 23:14, 21 July 2005 (UTC)

Thank You![edit]

Thank you for welcoming me so warmly to Wikipedia... I kind of started off making nonsense pages and vandalizing on purpose but I got past it and thought this is a really cool community, I might as well join and help fight vandalism and get some useful information on here. Jory Plummer

Good to see a bad user go good. Happy editing and remember to sign pages. Redwolf24 03:23, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

thanks for supporting me[edit]

Hello, just a quick note to express my gratitude for your support of my RfA. I'm sure I'll become a familiar face on places like the Administrator's Noticeboard and Requests for Adminship, as well as the murkier parts of my new job. "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." (Luke 12:48, NIV) Never was a truer word spoken. I feel empowered, yes, but not in the "oooh cool delete button!" way I was kind of expecting. Already I feel the weight of the responsibility I have now been entrusted with, a weight that will no doubt reduce given time. Thank you for believing in me. :) GarrettTalk 10:17, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

No problem but I hope youve checked AN/I, your name is up... Redwolf24 21:25, 22 July 2005 (UTC)
I hadn't, and no-one informed me. That is not a good example from people trying to point out my own errors. GarrettTalk 01:04, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

I wouldn't say your name is "up;" it's more like you've been flat out attacked. Somewhere, Larry Sanger is having chest pains right now, and he doesn't know why. -- Essjay · Talk 21:37, July 22, 2005 (UTC)

In fairness, I'm not seeing any incivility in that exchange. El_C 21:41, 22 July 2005 (UTC)
Me neither. Redwolf24 21:43, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

I feel that comments like:

are per se, de jure incivility. If I started a new job and someone told me that they shouldn't have to trail around cleaning up my mess within ten hours of me starting, and never even bothered to say "Welcome aboard," I'd tell them to take their job and shove it. (My apologies to those with sensitive ears.) From what I've seen around the site, it's indicative of the behavior of quite a few senior admins: "Criticise sharply, never constructively, and for God sake don't ever say good job." I think WP:DICK sums it up. -- Essjay · Talk 21:59, July 22, 2005 (UTC)

Its strange, just as we were all newbs once, every admin was an ADMIN NEWBIE, and they can get yelled at for that, they're just expected to know everything as soon as voted in. Of course, I don't think I'll be doing as much as you or Garret have on my first day... Redwolf24 22:10, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Gah, I've kind of been the sacrificial lamb here going to the slaughter. And yes we all know who the butcher was. But there will be a resolution... gee, reminds me of a song... :) GarrettTalk 01:04, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Remind them to Not bite the newbie administrator. Which should be me in 2 minutes! Redwolf24 01:15, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
As it is now, there are only a handful of admins that stand up and notice other users for their efforts, and not enough of them to defend others if its a controversial subject. (not that I know about those ;-) ) It will be nice to have 3 new admins that are willing not only to recogonize users for their benefits, but also stand up for them if they are taking heat for something that may have been a misunderstaning or mistake. Who?¿? 01:24, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Congrats again Redwolf. =). Sorry to hear about all this happening to you guys. Just remember to follow the policy to the letter, don't bend the rules when it comes to speedy (admins were doing this a bit before, but the intention of the new CSD rules was to make new policy so you don't have to bend the rules). Review all the policy pages if you have to. Take your time, if you're not sure about something, ask if you have too. I'm sure this is all common sense, but I'm saying it anyway. Anywho, admins still have to be civil, which it seems like tony was not aware of. -- BMIComp (talk, HOWS MY DRIVING)
Don't jingse it now! El_C 01:22, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Deleting photos[edit]

I have uploaded two photos I now wish to delete from Wikipedia's website. How do I do that?

Sean

List them at IFD. Redwolf24 00:20, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

??[edit]

I'm new at this, and I'm not sure what you instructions mean. I have uploaded to pictures. These pictures are currently not in any article in Wikipedia. I simple want to permanently delete them from the website. Again, how do I do this (in layman's terms).

Sean

Ok first of all, instead of typing Sean, type ~~~~. It lets me trackback to you. Second of all, you can't delete the images as you are not an Admin. I should be one in about half an hour (see RfA). When I become one I'll delete them for you. What are the two images? Remember to link them. Redwolf24 00:42, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks.[edit]

Here are the two pics (by me, Sean Reynolds) I give you permisson to delete. By the way, sorry for the garbled language of the last message. Sometimes I type too fast.

Administrator[edit]

Congratulations, you're an admin! Be sure and take a look at the Administrators' reading list and Wikipedia:Administrators' how-to guide if you haven't already. Please try to be conservative in the use of your newfound abilities until you are sure of the limits of community support for your actions. Best wishes, The Uninvited Co., Inc. 01:37, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Congrats!! Howabout1 Talk to me! 02:00, July 23, 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations, Redwolf24. I hope we can be friends despite the little hiatus of a week or so ago. Use your mop-and-gun wisely (and, read the policy first, or your talk page will go the way of another user's...) -Splash 02:31, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Haha I accidentally reverted TO vandalism. Other than that, check my log, I'm doing well. Redwolf24 02:33, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
TO vandalism? I feel no particular urge to check admins' logs; I trust them, even if I miserly opposed their RfA. But since you invited me to, I would have done the same as you on your first three deletions, and have been particularly satisfied at the new policy now allowing the first two! -Splash 02:41, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Yes that Persecution of Jews one I screwed up, a very Newb mistake. Anyways yeah I hope we can become friends. If you need admin help, you know where to find me! Redwolf24 02:43, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Why did you revert back to the blanked version? --malathion talk 01:51, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Sorry I just became an administrator and I saw the [Rollback] thing. I thought you put that link there so I was clicking it. My apologies and that won't happen again. Redwolf24 01:52, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Ah, I see you have just become an admin! Congratulations. And I have to admit I got a chuckle out of the above ... I was a bit confused by all those shiny buttons at first too... You'll be great: happy editing and adminning! Antandrus (talk) 04:05, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
If I got a laugh my job is done :) Just one action of mine I'm not sure about, I deleted Kristen Abel (you're an admin right? you can view it) but now Im not sure I should have. Everything else I've deleted I was sure about. Redwolf24 04:07, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Hm, seems to have been reincarnated. It's an obvious vanity article; that kind used to go through VfD, but I'd better go have a look at the "new speedy deletion criteria" in case they have really changed ... that part is news to me. Antandrus (talk) 04:10, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Please, tell me how I protect a page from being created. Redwolf24 04:14, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
The only way I know is to blank the page and then protect it (I've done this a couple of times because of persistent vandalism). You use the {{vprotect}} tag and then list it on Wikipedia:Protected page--there's a section for pages protected against article re-creation. Antandrus (talk) 04:18, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
See comment below under Jwrosenzweig. Redwolf24 17:30, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Hi From Mr.Smith[edit]

Hello! Thank you for greeting me. I am, I admit, new to wikipedia. I would like to say something. On 23:19, on July 22, 2005, SogeKing hacked my Wikipedia with the message,"U CANNOT STOP TEH HAXZOR!1!!!1!1 TRY AS U CAN U SHAL NOT SUCSEED!121!! IF U DEFEET ME ANUTHER SHAL TAK MY PLASE!1!!11 LOLOL!1!1!12!." Before this, 69.237.175.153 amd 205.188.116.68 hacked it with the message ,"ZOMG TEH HAXZOR WAZ HEER!1!!11 JUS LIK IN TEH 'HOT COFFEE'11!!1 LOLOL1!1!!1 GO SPEED RACER, GO SPEED RACER, GO SPEED RACER, GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!11!!11!2" There were several "updates" leading up to this one. Please track them down. Thank you. Mr.Smith999999 02:36, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

I warned SogeKing. Redwolf24 02:38, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

CONGRATS[edit]

I know I'm not the first to do this, but I would like to extend my congratulations to you on becoming an admin. I'm positive you will make an excellent addition to the admins, and know that you will continue to act just as civily as you have always done. Thanks for working with me on that article, and prompting the other soundtracks to come out of crappy little shortnesses. Keep up the good work, and have a great night. Again, congrats. :)

-mysekurity 03:03, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the congrats. Check my log once in a while to see how Im doing :D Redwolf24 03:06, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Yes well done. :) DarthVader 06:41, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

RfA voting[edit]

Hello. Thanks for the change of heart. Don't take my vote personally. I think you are a great Wikipedian. I just figured a little extra time would have been better. Congrats anyway. -- JamesTeterenko 04:01, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

sorry for that Newb mistake you caught me doing. Ironically enough I've been working on speedy's now. Redwolf24 04:03, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism in progress[edit]

Thanks. -- JamesTeterenko 06:07, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations, my lupine friend[edit]

I think you'll do an admirable job as admin, and I welcome you to the post (moink's classic description of adminning would have me offer you a mop and pail...which is probably a good indication of the glamour of the job). I also want to commend your nobly independent spirit -- with 500+ admins working to rollback vandalism, your solitary efforts to restore it have in them a manic grace which is too fine for words. :-) Needless to say, my bizarre sense of humor (which enjoys sockpuppet accusations) finds the thought of you puzzled by the "rollback" link and clicking on it most amusing. Don't worry too much about it -- sometimes I misclick and rollback a legitimate edit....then have to rollback my own edit. Most embarassing. :-) I'll give you the best advice I can (which was given to me long ago) -- before you try anything new with your admin powers, talk with a trusted admin who's been around a while and knows the ropes. I tended to rely on Angela and mav when I was first an admin (and confused about transwiki, copyright resolution, page moves, etc.) -- even on simple deletions, it can be a good thing to get a second opinion. Especially the first time a user mouths off at you (or files a complaint) because of your admin work, before you write one word of response, it's good to get an outside opinion -- show them what happened, and ask what they might have done, and what should be said. It's honestly not a bad way to go every time you're under fire, but especially the first time. There you have it -- a pearl of wisdom, such as it is. Use it wisely. :-) Once again, my heartfelt and enthusiastic congratulations, Jwrosenzweig 06:23, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Mop and pail? That doesn't make sense!
The preceding comment was stupid and smartass like. You can help Wikipedia by killing it.
Now for the serious thing, if I need admin help I'll ask you. Now here's the first thing, how do I protect a page from being recreated? Redwolf24 06:27, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Heh, thanks for the confidence. Prevention of page recreation is near impossible. If the title is remotely legitimate, it might be good as a redirect (it's much harder for casual vandals to figure out how to get to the actual redirect....of course, the down side is that you've supplied them with a nice article to vandalize) -- of course, redirs inhibit article contribution, so if there could ever be a legit article at the title, it's not an ideal solution. I believe that, before you delete an article, you can put it on your watchlist...I think that survives deletion, so that if it ever reappears you notice it. That's as close as they come. This all, of course, assumes that there is no legitimate article waiting to be written for that title....if there is, write it, man! :-) That or convince one of your army of minions to do so. :-) Sorry I'm not more helpful! Jwrosenzweig 06:34, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Well I've seen pages that I listed for deletion be protected from recreation. Redwolf24 17:30, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Wow. I wonder if, before you delete the page, you can protect it? Odd. But then what if someone someday wants to create the page in legitimate fashion? Sounds like a good question for the village pump or else WP:AN (possibly Help desk...I can't keep track anymore). If you do find out the answer, would you let me know? I'd be most curious (and likely to weigh in with my opinion on the wisdom of the action). Jwrosenzweig 04:47, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
Well you'd only protect articles from being created like... LOOK AT MY AMATEUR PORNSITE, IT GETS 14 HITS A MONTH! and the guy keeps on recreating it. I will let you know if I find it again. By the way I listed you at User:Redwolf24/Friends. Redwolf24 04:57, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
Makes sense...I'd just want to be sure that was the policy in practice. :-) Thanks for keeping me aware. Thank you doubly much for listing me as a friend -- I am honored to have gained your respect so swiftly. I admit to feeling a little embarrased that your quasi-mentor was an absolute failure answering your first admin question. :-) But I expect you'll be understanding. Have fun adminning things. :-) Jwrosenzweig 05:05, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
Its fair, I mean come on I dont even know what quasi is! Redwolf24 05:10, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
I saw this discussion and figured I would jump in. See Category:Protected deleted pages. -- JamesTeterenko 05:13, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
Thanks a LOT! James. :D :D :D Redwolf24 06:01, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
No prob. Do you find it ironic that we both voted against each other for adminship, yet we have been helping each other out this weekend? :) -- JamesTeterenko 06:25, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
Hey, at least I changed MY vote :-P Redwolf24 09:10, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
Okay, next time you are up for adminship, I'll be sure to vote for you. If you want, I'll even nominate you.  :) -- JamesTeterenko 03:32, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
Actually to tell you the truth I hope to one day run for bureaucrat, but thats not for a long long long long long long long time. Redwolf24 03:34, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

Adult photos/images question...[edit]

Hi. Thanks again for the warm welcome. So, here's something I haven't found a guideline on. Surfing the recent changes page, clicked on a new entry, and found, at the top of the page, a very large and fairly explicit pornographic set of images (definitely not work safe). Now, I can't imagine that's WP policy, but who knows. Thus, I'm asking you. For the record, the page is AHMO HIGHT. (I've left as-is.) Please advise. Thanks! --DNicholls 11:40, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

I see no image... But WP does have a policy against pornographic images. Redwolf24 17:30, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Ah. Looks like someone got to it beforehand, which is welcome. (The writing was all fan/ad-driven POV anyway.) Thanks for your answer. --DNicholls 22:12, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Hey, just in case you want a link for that question. WP:NOT, if you didnt' have it ;) . Who?¿? 22:20, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

I didn't know.[edit]

Thanks for the warning about the potential blocking, I didn't know that I was "recreating the page" over and over again; I merely thought I was continuing to edit it.

Also, I didn't find that I had "messages" until after I was already done editing because I've never received messages before until I attempted to create this page. I saw the miniature "You Have Messages" text completely by accident and I'm somewhat perturbed at what would have happened if I hadn't noticed. I meant no harm in the page's creation and was merely setting it up for a friend so that she might use it for college applications/references. This was the first "vanity" page I've ever created, and with the fire and brimstone it has wraught, it shall also be my last.

Again, many apologies for my ignorance. ~FinalStrife7

Sorry I think as a newbie admin I accidentally restored that article and I thought you did it so that was why I did the blunt warning. So sorry for the somewhat harsh warning, I'll remove it. Redwolf24 17:30, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks from r.e.s.[edit]

Hi Redwolf24 ... I appreciate the welcome message. The links you included are very helpful to me as a newcomer, and it's nice having them collected in one place. Some of them I knew about and/or had already read, but some not. (Also, I hadn't known about including a category on a newly-created page.) Thanks again, and Happy Wikipedia-ing. --r.e.s. 14:43:45, 2005-07-23 (UTC)

EcoDuro[edit]

Thanks for helping me along here. The VFD for EcoDuro was actually a pretty good learning experience and forced me to think some things through about WikPedia. It seems to me that the "governing body" is going to have to become seriously active in developing a pretty large number of guidelines that are "nurtured". I live in Ann Arbor, where we think a lot about these things because the University of Michigan has such an active Library Science school, and UMI (now Proquest) and Borders Books were founded here. Proquest has the second largest library in the United States in a combination of electronic and Microfilm vaults...anyway, in thinking all this through, it seems that WikiPedia will head towards a "credibility gap" if it is allowed to drift into a "group grope" (not sure you'll find that in the Dictionary, since I'm pretty sure I invented the term). Some of the challanges I have observed are:

- Motivating subject matter experts to overcome the friction created by lesser experts without creating so much control that Wiki diminishes the multiple perspectives. One of the GREATEST opportunities for the Wikipedia is to capture the multiple facets of history for the FIRST TIME IN RECORDED HISTORY. This alone makes it a valuable tool. The key is establishing a way in which the guidelines nurture with only a modest amount of frustration.

- It is going to take a lot of thinking to figure out how to develop the Wikipedia as the most credible source of public encyclopedic information, but I think the fundementals are here.

- Reward significant credibile contributors. The rewards I'm thinking of are not financial and I see there are some designations that look interesting from a peer group. I wonder if there are other incentives that may be created for those who materially improve the document.

- Provide a place for significant points of view about material subjects. This may be a related wiki, but wouldn't it be absoulutely amazing to get Collin Powell and Saddam Hussein to write THEIR description of what happened leading up to the Iraq war? I would want their points of view virtually untouched, but litsted clearly as a points of view. Seems a stretch now, but as Wiki becomes more popular, there may be many significant historical items where Wikipedia may be THE nuetral source to document history.

I think I'm going to need to learn more about the Wikimedia project and how I can help with that. If you have any thoughts please let me know. By the way, I need to figure out how to make one of those "leave a message" blocks on my page...I like it.

I love to help and thanks for those notes there. You seem to be on your way to becoming a valuable contributer. I'll do the message table for you. Redwolf24 02:21, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

Late I know but...[edit]

Congratulations on becoming an admin! I know you'll make a great one. I've been away for the weekend, without access to a PC so I couldn't congratulate you earlier (and have also been suffering from wiki-drawal symptoms!). BTW, I left some suggestions on your bands talk page. the wub "?/!" 21:48, 24 July 2005 (UTC)

Shweet, I love band comments. And thanks for the congrats! Redwolf24 02:30, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

And finally[edit]

Now I get to say it: CONGRATULATIONS!

I'm so very excited for you! Sorry I haven't been around; I got pulled away Friday night and have been quite busy over the weekend. But, I'm here now, and as I said, CONGRATULATIONS!

Oh, and two things: I blocked your Apple character indef. for the virus threat; that's def. one case where and indef. block is the right way. And, I see you found my status indicator; I like it! -- Essjay · Talk 23:49, July 24, 2005 (UTC)

US Wikipedia Conference / Chapter[edit]

Redwolf,

What do you think about getting together a US Wikipedia meeting / chapter. Is there one? If not, I would enjoy pulling someting together in Ann Arbor, MI. If there is interest, I can reach out to the University of Michigan School of Information or Internet II for places to host a meeting and to help provide some keynote speakers/panels etc. --Ronreed 23:57, 24 July 2005 (UTC)

Ron we don't really do U.S. cross country meetings. Plus if we ever did it'd probably be in... Chicago or New York. Nah, since our country is so big we just do local meetings once in a while, like you could go to a Detroit one. Redwolf24 02:30, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks![edit]
