Douglas Schottenstein is an American physician, fellowship-trained and double-board certified in neurology and interventional pain management. He is one of only 200 physicians in the nation who is double board certified in neurology and interventional pain management. He is licensed to practice in the states of New York and Florida. His practice, NY Spine Medicine, is located near Times Square in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, and near historic Coral Gables in Miami, Florida. In addition to leading NY Spine Medicine, Dr. Schottenstein is an attending physician at New York Presbyterian-affiliated hospitals, the top-rated hospital system in the region. He is also a national lecturer for Asante Communications and Integritas Communications, publishers of physician and patient education, as well as a journal reviewer for Charles Argoff, MD, professor of neurology at Albany Medical College, and director of the Comprehensive Pain Center at Albany Medical Center.


Early Life[edit]

Dr. Schottenstein was born May 4, 1973 in Louisville, Kentucky to his mother Melva Schottenstein, an instructor at Columbus State Community College, and his father, Edwin Schottenstein, who was a former judge and current lawyer at Schottenstein Law Offices. The family then moved to Columbus, Ohio where he and his brothers Michael and Jeffrey Schottenstein were raised. He graduated from Bexley High School as valedictorian in 1991.


Education[edit]

Dr. Schottenstein graduated magna cum laude from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1995 with a bachelor of science in biology and biological anthropology. As an undergraduate, he received a High Scholarship Award for a grade point average of 3.8 and was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. He received his medical degree (M.D.) from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 2000, followed by an internship in internal medicine at Rush University Affiliated Hospitals in Chicago, Illinois (July 2000-June 2001). He continued his post-doctoral training at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, where he completed his residency in neurology (July 2001-June 2004). Dr. Schottenstein then completed a fellowship in interventional pain management (July 2004-September 2005) at Columbia University and New York Presbyterian Hospitals, rated one of the top five hospitals in the nation.


Career – Medical Practice[edit]

Immediately following his fellowship, Dr. Schottenstein accepted the position of director of interventional pain management at Seaport Orthopaedic Associates in New York City. He worked there for four years until he founded his own practice, NY Spine Medicine. Dr. Schottenstein diagnoses and treats patients with acute and chronic pain conditions. He performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and surgeries, including epidural steroid injections, transforaminal nerve blocks, sympathetic blocks, facet and sacroiliac joint injections, radiofrequency lesioning, provocative discography, annuloplasty, nucleoplasty, spinal cord stimulation, and intrathecal pumps. He also performs Regenokine therapy to halt or subdue osteoarthritis. Trained by Dr. Peter Wehling, a world-renowned molecular cell orthopedist in Düsseldorf, Germany, Dr. Schottenstein is one of only three doctors in the U.S. who does the procedure. Dr. Schottenstein’s areas of clinical excellence include: non-surgical back treatment, minimally invasive spine surgery, medical pain management, neurology, diagnostic imaging, electromyography and nerve conduction studies, and physical therapy and rehabilitation. Dr. Schottenstein is an attending physician at New York Presbyterian Hospitals in New York City and Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, New York. He also performs surgery at the Midtown Surgery Center.

Dr. Schottenstein is board certified in pain medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology and board certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. To keep abreast of advances in his specialties, he maintains professional memberships in the American Academy of Neurology, the American Society of Anesthesiology, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia, the International Spine Intervention Society, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, and the American Headache Society.

Outside Interests[edit]

Outside of his career, Dr. Schottenstein enjoys traveling, running, and scuba diving. He is also an avid college football fan. Dr. Schottenstein is active in the Jewish community as well. In a national news segment, Fox News interviewed him about the re-invention of traditional religious practices in a synagogue located in the trendy neighborhood of Soho. This concept was designed to attract young followers of Judaism to strengthen their faith in a modern setting.
