AN/I thread[edit]

A thread was opened at [1]. As an administrator I would like to ask you to pause creating these articles until that thread has been resolved. In particular, it would be helpful if you could give links to any relevant discussions about creating these articles. If there is consensus at the end that the articles are OK, then a short pause will not matter, while if there is consensus against them then it will reduce the mount of cleanup work. It is too soon to tell, and I have not looked into it in detail, which is why I am simply asking you to pause in the meantime. Thanks, — Carl (CBM · talk) 00:17, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia has become an impersonal, unfriendly place. Growth and innovation are unrewarded and unwelcome. The sense of humor and the camaraderie are dead. There is no more community any more.

Above all else, I was an editor from November 8, 2003 to November 19, 2011. --Merovingian (T, C, L)

Hello Merovingian. While Wikipedia has negative elements and conflicts, I don't think it's entirely impersonal or without merit. Sometimes it helps to take a break and try working on different projects for a while. You might find, for example, that working on WP:PR or helping other editors with their projects is beneficial and rewarding. Just a thought. Regards, RJH (talk) 16:45, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
I will truly miss seeing your asteroid stubs show up in Special:NewPages. Best wishes, and good luck. →Στc. 21:59, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
You did? Were you trying to look out for bad new article creations or something? You checked what the articles were? Why didn't you say something? Did you say anything? What happened? Chrisrus (talk) 04:02, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
Kind of a bad place to make a point. If you think there's a problem with something, this isn't the place to complain. — Moe ε 22:43, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
It's not to make a point. It's to find out how this happened. Chrisrus (talk) 22:48, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
I would suggest you take my advice and stop beating a dead horse. If Merovingian has left Wikipedia, there is nothing to accomplish commenting on his talk page. — Moe ε 22:51, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
on the contrary, we have to study why people leave, in order to save the place. "camaraderie is dead" could use with an exit interview. Slowking4 †@1₭ 13:18, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
If you have a legitimate concern with something, take it elsewhere to a relevant project page or noticeboard since he is inactive. His talk page, nor any users talk page, isn't for "studies" of why people leave. — Moe ε 15:25, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
See you around, friend. — Moe ε 22:34, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
Discussion is still ongoing, as it should be: see Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Inconsistent application of notability. As someone who is science-literate but not a scientist, I was and remain fascinated by your work on Minor planets. I'm now wondering what will happen to all the Lepidoptera articles I contributed to that wouldn't appear to pass WP:GNG. Or for that matter, Cricket players, or Australian Football players. Even if you aren't contributing, please keep watching. Stay around, Merovingian.--Shirt58 (talk) 14:40, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
Ah... ...too bad. While I don't 100% agree with what you say, I certainly understand it. I note an Arbitrator recently remarked that an apparently productive strategy would have been "so 2007". I feel that there is a conflict between creators and curators. (If I were being uncharitable I might say those who want to do what curators do, but fail miserably.) File source problem with File:Richard t harris.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Richard t harris.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MSU Interview[edit]

Dear Merovingian,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at [email protected] (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 04:07, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

File:1917 flute.jpg needs authorship information[edit]

Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:1917 flute.jpg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

  • If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which: {{subst:usernameexpand|Merovingian/archive-26}} will produce an appropriate expansion,
    or use the {{own}} template.
  • If this is an old image, for which the authorship is unknown or impossible to determine, please indicate this on the file description page.
If you have any questions please see Help:File page. Thank you. Captaincollect1970 (talk) 20:07, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Princess Nine.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Princess Nine.JPG. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. List of MInor Planets[edit]

Are you interested in working on improving and completing List of minor planets? Chrisrus (talk) 03:26, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Needed: someone to add, for each entry on the LOMP, the object's "group", i.e.: Main belt, etc. The LOMP user is being denied this basic info.
By the way, other columns could be made there, too, for orbit info. There is a way to draw a graphic of each item's orbit, and that graphic could be housed in a column or columns, too. I have seen some minor planet articles that have these already.
Rich Farmborough and others seemed to be saying that, just as an orbit-gif could be made for each item in a "group", a mega animated graphic could be made showing the entire group at once, not unlike the main belt graphics on You Tube, which would make our collection of minor planets superior to the site that houses them now, and also do YouTube one better by allowing zooming in and out and running forwards and backwards in time, which might allow someone to predict collisions and such.
But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Right now, the important thing is that column to place each item's "group", and then to fill that column so a LOMP user would know what each MP is, i.e.: a main belt or trojan or whatever; I don't know the proper term; its "group". Hi Merovingian[edit]

I simply wanted to say hello, I'm Penyulap, and I saw someone had left a note on Richard's page, with a link to your recent contribs. I was attracted by your name, and the edit summary. Familiar. Penyulap 16:48, 24 Jul 2012 (UTC)

And welcome back. One of the regulars who it will be good to see around again. Rich Farmbrough, 01:42, 25 July 2012 (UTC).

Welcome back, also. I haven't been as active as I'd like to be, pretty much because there's only so much you can accomplish by web browsing from a phone as opposed to a real computer. If you're still maintaining an interest in Juneau articles, I recently created Marie Drake. It could use more sources, but I think I have a few I can consult. Also, I would recommend Winter & Pond and B. M. Behrends Bank as subjects which could use articles.

The main reason I'm writing is this: the redirects Fliptown and Fliptown, Alaska have been troubling me for quite a number of months. I nominated them for deletion, believing them to be a racial slur against Juneau's Filipino community. I overlooked that you created them, so perhaps there may have been a reason? The term doesn't appear in the Juneau article or anywhere else on Wikipedia that I can find. If the term was found in the article before, was it deleted for the same reason I'm nominating the redirects? Cheers.RadioKAOS (talk) 19:54, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Help with Preston Cloud entry?[edit]

Hello Merovingian! I'm a brand-new wikipedian interested in the article you originally created about my father, the Earth Scientist Preston Cloud, which I'd like to expand and correct on the occasion of his centenary next week... I'm REALLY green here and am unable even to make out whether you're active in WP at this time, but I'd like a little guidance and I don't want to step on any toes, and since the only other 2 wikipedeans I can see who've done anything except maintenance (Aavindraa and Alan Au) appear to be currently inactive, I thought I'd start by asking you :-) ...I looked around WP with an eye to contributing about 9 years ago and my recollection is of a less-opaque environment ;-) ...any very strong suggestions, or shall I just bash away in the sandbox until I feel confident?
