Introduction[edit]

Jagat Kinkhabwala also prominently known as sparrow man is born on 17 July, 1954 at Ahmedabad . He is an environmental conservationalist, nature specialist, environment management consultant and writer.

Education[edit]

He did his schooling at Sheth Chimanlal Nagindas Vidyalaya[1] and then pursued his undergraduate education from B.K. School of Business Management.

Current work profile[edit]

He is presently working as Environmental management consultant and CSR (Corporate social responsibility) consultant at Ratnamani metals and tubes Ltd.[2]

Motive[edit]

He has been constantly active and working towards conservation of sparrows and building nests for them through waste materials and spreading awareness as the bird gauraiya[3] is very difficult to find and they are on the verge of extinction. He has been constantly active in this field of conserving sparrows for last three decades and still contributing and acting as a messiah for sparrows in this present times where it has become difficult for sparrows to live peacefully.

Recognition at national level[edit]

He is also known as chakliwala (sparrow man in Hindi) as he is convicting his love for sparrows since last three decades. He has a written a book named “Save the sparrows” which has been already published.[4] After being published he sent it to many dignitaries which also included our honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. It was surprising for him when honorable prime minister sent him a letter appreciating his book and works done in this sector. And it was much more amazing when PM Modi talked about him and his book on All India Radio through his program named "Mann ki baat".[5] Reviewing his book and appreciating his work for conserving sparrows P.M Modi said that this book not only expressed concerned about the declining number of sparrows but also what steps are taken by Mr. Jagat Kinkhabwala in a mission mode for the conservation of sparrows.[5] He has been also researching in subject matter sparrows also he has built a special arrangement in the garden of his house where sparrows can reside in nests and can have water and food. When he started in 2008 he had only sparrow residing at his house but now he has more than twenty five different species of birds residing at his house. Now his house is not just a house but an symbiotic habitat of human specie and bird specie.

Recognition in corporate world[edit]

Going back in 2013 his idea of building nest was boosted and got sponsored by two big corporate houses wiz. Tata, Tanishq, Trident group[6] and Ratnamani metals and tubes ltd. According to an estimate around 5000 nests were to be distributed on the occasion of World Sparrow Day that is on 20 March under the initiative of corporate social responsibility. And also he has till now distributed around more than 50,000 nests free of cost all over across the country and the most important thing is that he has been receiving constant success stories and feedback across the country.

Recognition as a dignitary[edit]

He has been invited by Azim Premji, owner of Wipro in an event by serenity trust supported by Wipro where only 10 experts from whole India were supposed to be invited who are working on non-professional basis and taking the mission ahead "Save the Sparrows". He always believed that sparrows ought to fly in the sky once again as previously. This belief of him has been acting as a driving force for him and many others in conserving the sparrows. Another major event in his life was that back in 2016 he was called by the former governor of Gujarat state Mr. O. P Kohli at the office of the governor and was awarded for his rigorous efforts and contribution in this field. Also the major perspective of this event was to provide some information and insights on topic of Concerns for the environment and how to save the sparrows.[7] After this event he also distributed nests for sparrows at Raj bhawan and then he was congratulated for this deed by the honorable former governor sir by a shawl and a token of appreciation.

Efforts in society[edit]

He requests people celebrating the auspicious festival of navratri to not to bury the pot which is called as "Garbo" in regional language in river and instead use it as nest for sparrows which could be hung with wire on ceiling. Also he requests people during summer to cut the reusable bottles, fill it with water and then hung in the balcony or on the rooftop of the house. He has established a trust named serenity and he has constructed a place named Serenity library in Gandhinagar[8] region where he has nearly grown around 500 types of trees and plants. At that place he also has a room where there is plethora of information about different species of birds and small animals. He has the whole observation of the birth of a home sparrow and its lifestyle explained in a book in this library at serenity trust. This trust also organizes events of awareness regarding sparrow conservation at various places and institutions.
