Julius Dein (born 4 May 1994) is an English street magician illusionist and social media influencer / star.

Biography and career path[edit]

Julius Dein is the son of Jeremy Dein QC – leading criminal defence barrister and Lee Dein – creator of magic link handwriting. He is one of 4 siblings.[1]

Dein was educated at JFS (Jewish Free School) in Kenton, north west London, where he first performed magic both at school and at parties.[citation needed] Following school he attended King's College London, and on his study abroad year at UCLA he performed at events, and began making[2] prank videos[3][4][5] and social experiment videos.[6] Julius graduated from Kings with a 2:1 in International Relations.

In 2016 Julius started posting videos of street magic to the Internet, building an online audience of over 20 million followers across social media.[7] Since then, he has made appearances across radio and TV, including Talk Sport[8] London Live[9] as well as US appearances on the Steve Harvey Show and Fox.[10] Subsequent videos included videos such as proposing to strangers and bigger street magic stunts such as floating on an invisible chair in London.[3][11] In 2015, an article in the Jewish Chronicle labelled him the "Hollywood Magician", due to his appearances at celebrity events.[12][failed verification]

Dein was the first digital signing in the UK by American talent agency UTA in June 2017 but is now represented by William Morris Entertainment.[13]

International profile   [edit]

Between 2016-2018, Julius has performed magic at a diverse range of international festivals and events including Ultra Music Festival Miami,[14] Vidcon California].[15] In August 2018, Julius headlined the On- Off Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia[16][17] and in November, launched his sell-out show in Mexico City.[18] Since then, he has made worldwide appearances, including throughout Asia and Europe.[19][20]

Reputation[edit]

Dein's videos have received a mix of positive and negative coverage. News sites have covered some of his videos.[21][22] Huffington Post writer Ryan Barrell described one of Dein's pranks as being "so simple, but so funny", and noted that Dein was a "brave man" for pulling off the prank.[22] Julius Dein was nominated number 3 in the Forbes “Top 10 industries leading their accounts, with Brian Rashid stating Julius dein combines “ his love for magic tricks with candid videos of people’s reactions out in the real world.[23] However, Julius’s video’s have received some controversy. Julius Dein hit the headlines following a television appearance on Good Morning Britain following an erroneous suggestion that one of his tricks had gone wrong. This featured in The Daily Mail, Huffington Post and OK! Magazine. However, this only served to increase his popularity.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). "  - referring to the “ magic with homeless people video” Julius created, that received over 200 million views across Facebook and Instagram.[24]

In 2018, Julius Dein performed magic on international rapper Drake at Annabel’s Club in London leaving drake dumfounded. The video went viral, with the BBC referring to Julius Dein as “The magician that blew Drake’s Mind with a lollipop.” They branded Julius as a “Social Media superstar”.[25]
