Jefferson Flanders (born 1955) is an American author and independent journalist, best known for his historical fiction set in the early Cold War.

Biography[edit]

Flanders was born in Montclair, New Jersey. His parents, Stephen Carver Flanders and Carol Marie Orr met in the newsroom of the New York Herald Tribune. [1][2] His sister, Julie Christina Flanders, is a poet and the lyricist for October Project. He graduated from Harvard College with a degree in history and literature, where he wrote for the Harvard Crimson and Harvard Advocate.[3]

His first novel, Herald Square, set in 1949, focused on Soviet espionage in the U.S. It was praised by Huffington Post and the Washington Times.[4][5] The next book in the First Trumpet trilogy, The North Building, dealt with British double agent Kim Philby. It was praised by ForeWord Reviews [6]. The final novel in the series, The Hill of Three Borders, was centered on the Hungarian uprising against the Russians in 1956.

In 2014, Flanders began a new historical fiction series, the Tarkingtons, with The Republic of Virtue, which received acclaim from Kirkus Reviews, and followed it with The Boston Trader in 2015. [7] 8

As a journalist and columnist, Flanders has written for newspapers, magazines, and websites, as well as teaching as an adjunct in the journalism department of New York University. [8]
