Background[edit]
From February 10 to 19th, a major cold wave impacted the central United States and northern Mexico. This was described as the most severe cold wave of the 21st century. Many locations set records for their longest subfreezing streaks on record. Temperatures were 10-15°C (18-27°F) below normal during the cold wave, as polar air plunged as far as Veracruz. This also allowed winter storms to dump snow on the area.[1]
Impact[edit]
The winter storm led to rolling blackouts in 26 of 32 Mexican provinces, and slowed down Mexican milk production. Part of the reason of the extensive power outages is due to Texas imposing a ban on exporting energy due to their energy power crisis.[2] Temperatures dipped as low as −18 °C (0 °F) and 4.7 million customers lost power.[3]
