The proposed updated diagram about Venice institutions:

  • The Arengo was an something an early institution which elected the Doge and decide about war and peace until 1172.
  • The Council of Ten was founded in 1310.
  • The Collegio consisted of the Doge himself, and so called Savi, experienced men who were elected by the Maggior Consiglio. They were responsible for the Stato da Màr, that means, the colonial empire, from about 1380 onwards. Starting in 1420 another group of Savi, who were then also part of the Collegio, were responsible for the Stato da Terra, the Venetian parts of northern Italy. The Collegio consisted of 11 Savi grandi including the doge; certain institutions were also represented at the very frequent meetings of the Collegio, e. g. the above mentioned heads of the Camera del Sal.
