On Armed Forces day, I was privileged to speak to a veteran of the Burma campaign, who had fought at Kohima, The horror of which remain to this day, with those brave and courageous men. As is usual, no mention of Burma, he has recently been to visit an HMP prison within 30 miles of Wolverhampton. He was aiding a much younger person, to visit an inmate. He could not contain himself, he burst into laughter, he has been in the Regulating branch, who used to police the RN and RM, and had taken many people to the cells(the Glasshouse) and various places. On arrival at the prison, he was amazed to find massive TV screens. easy chairs, computer, the prison officers, called by their first names, and a choice of five courses at every meal. In conversation he asked if the prisoners(residents)ever complained.. He was told very rarely, except when mangoes were taken off the breakfast menus. He was shown the sports equipments which with the games equipment, equaled a first class hotel. This very elderly, upright veteran of Kohima, gave me his opinion of our prison system. "If I was staying there, I would not wish to go home". I think that very adequately sums up our prison system. He did add, that d rugs and alcohol, were freely available, but were not provided.John Mellor 118, Birches Barn Road, WV37BG 01902338904
