From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first Lithuanian border mentioned in the written source is the Russian-Lithuanian border, described in the Annals of Quedlinburg, which mentions two equivalent states and the 1009 March 9 event at their border, when St. Bruno was hit in the head on the Russian-Lithuanian border and went to heaven with 18 relatives. Later, the Lithuanian border was established more than once, for example, at the end of the 15th century with the German Order. thumb|344x344px|Changes in the borders of the Lithuanian state since the 13th century At the start of the 15th century, the state of Lithuania occupied the largest territory - the state consisted of Zemaitija (Samogitia), the actual part of Lithuania, and the largest part of the territory consisted of the Ruthenian duchies.

At 1422 September 27, when the Treaty of Melno was written, the west border of Grand Duchy of Lithuania was established that was kept unchanged for more than 500 years. According to the Treaty of Melno, Klaipėda's region belonged to the German states until 1923.

Lithuania in the USSR[edit]

Po Abiejų Tautų Respublikos padalijimų visą LDK teritoriją pasidalino galingosios imperijos – Užnemunė atiteko Prūsijos karalystei, o likusi dalis – Rusijos imperijai. Iki 1796 m. didžioji dalis dabartinės Lietuvos teritorijos priklausė Vilniaus gubernijai, kuri 1796 m. sujungta su Slanimo gubernija, sudarant Lietuvos guberniją. 1801 m.

– Augustavo gubernijoje).

1819 m. Palangos valsčius atiteko Kuršo gubernijai. 1843 m. nuo Vilniaus gubernijos atskirta Kauno gubernija, nuo 1867 m. Užnemunė priklausė Suvalkų gubernijai. 1867–1915 m. gubernijų ribos nekito.
