Thanassis Aghnides was a Greek diplomat.

Life[edit]

From 1918 to 1919 he directed the Press Office of the Greek Embassy in London. In 1919 he joigned the League of Nations Secretariat, where he worked until 1942. In 1932 he was secretary of the World Disarmament Conference in Geneva. The Turkish Government invited him to organise the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits. In July, 1936 he became Secretary-General of the Montreux Conference on Dardanelles. He served as the representative of Greece in the League of Nations and as Deputy Foreign Minister in the exile government of Tsouderos. He was an extraordinary envoy and proxy minister of the First Class in London. on 7 November 1942 he was appointed as Permanent Secretary of State. From 1942 to 1947 he was ambassador to the Court of St. James. From 25 April 1945 to 26 June 1945 he represented Greece at the United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco and the Preparatory commission in London. On 10 January 1946 he represented Greece at the United Nations General Assembly in the Methodist Central Hall, Westminster in London. Since 1948 he had been member of Hague Conference on Private International Law. Since 1949 he had been Chairman of the International Civil Service Advisory Board.[2]
