The 1971–72 season was Manchester City F.C.'s eightieth season of league football, and sixth consecutive season in the Football League First Division. This season is considered to be the seventh season of the glory era of Manchester City, which started at the appointment of the managerial partnership of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison in 1965. It also was the last season to see Mercer manage City, before a breakdown in his relationship with Malcolm Allison and a board takeover forced him to leave the club and take up the managerial reins at Coventry City, handing full control to Allison.
