Adopt Me[edit]

Hey I read your blurb on the Adopt a user and I am looking for help. Ive done some basic edits before and feel reasonably comfortable with wiki, but I have a part-time job where they are looking for me to be an expert on wikis so they can develop their own internal wiki. I have a feeling I need to be better at wikipedia and since you said you know wikicode and others, you can help me. Huck1eberrie (talk) 17:51, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Hey so for this wiki that i am working on, I have a problem with the navigation side bar. I have a problem accessing it since it is locked (i assume that i have to get the admin to change my status, so that is something on my end which i am working out), but i also cannot even see the sidebar appear, the wiki will just have articles and no naviagtion, search bar, interaction, or toolbox on the side. This makes navigation almost impossible and i cannot figure out why it is not showing up. On the page i cannot edit i can see:
  • navigation
    • mainpage|mainpage
    • portal-url|portal
    • currentevents-url|currentevents
    • recentchanges-url|recentchanges
    • randompage-url|randompage
    • helppage|help
    • sitesupport-url|sitesupport

So i know there is something that should be there, it is just not showing up. Huck1eberrie (talk) 14:46, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

I am not exactly sure what is happening, I assume the 'page i cannot edit' is Mediawiki:Sidebar. I have searched the MediaWiki documentation but I cannot seem to find any description of your problem. Some questions for you that might help determine what is happening:
Can you still see the logo at the top left?
Is there a bar of empty space at the left where the navbar should be or does the article go all the way to the left.
Right now the only thing I can say is get yourself promoted to 'sysop' and then copypaste WP's version of Mediawiki:Sidebar (as that evidently works) and see what happens. - Icewedge (talk) 07:32, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok, I have tagged it for speedy deletion. In the future you can request deletion of an article you have written by adding {{db-self}} to the page. - Icewedge (talk) 22:32, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

new member waiting for my 4 days - when can I start adding pictures to my articles? Thanks for all your help so far!! Khushnood2 (talk) 21:57, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

When you become auto-confirmed you can begin to upload pictures here localy. Make sure that the pictures have a valid copyright though. If the pictures you want to upload are public domain then you can go to commons: and upload them there; you are able to link to pictures on the commons from Wikipedia. - Icewedge (talk) 20:33, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

My (last) merger proposal[edit]

After thinking about your suggestion to consider WP:EAR and looking at that, WP:VPA, and WP:HD, I made another proposal. What do you think? --WikiWes77 (talk) 22:46, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Move to Commons[edit]

Could you move this image to Commons: Image:NefertariOfferingToHathor.JPG? It was originally uploaded to Wikipedia by Chip Dawes. The uploader seems quite reliable. I'm guessing he didn't know about WikiCommons. Anyway, there is no move to commons tag on it. I checked for Nefertari on Commons and could not find this image here...because its not there. Its a nice image which I used on her English Wikipedia article. Leoboudv (talk) 04:41, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

 Doing... - Icewedge (talk) 04:43, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
  • That image of Nefertari from Abu Simbel got listed for deletion for missing the source, date and license. It didn't have the correct public domain license (or any license). You had to copy all the copyright information. Leoboudv (talk) 06:17, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
  • I fixed the problem. It was listed for deletion since the pd license was missing. Thanks for moving it to Commons...where it belongs. Leoboudv (talk) 06:34, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Comment What is the deletion code in {{}} for deleting duplicates on Wikipedia which have already been uploaded onto Commons? Thank You, Leoboudv (talk) 20:34, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
No problem and thanks for cleaning up the mess I left behind.
The easiest to remember template is {{db-commons}} but as it is CSD I8, {{db-i8}} works too. - Icewedge (talk) 02:34, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
  • You are welcome. Leoboudv (talk) 22:06, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for nominating me[edit]

Well, well, Icewedge—it turns out you were bang on about people being impressed with my rescued articles. I anticipated that more people would fault me for the very reasons that Realist did in the neutral !vote. Anyway, I just want to thank you again so much. You obviously took a fair amount of time going through my contribution history, and then you put together a thoughtful and persuasive nomination statement. Thank you my friend! Question on public domain images on Wikipedia[edit]

Dear Icewedge,

  • I notice that many contributors often don't know about WikiCommons. They, instead, upload images onto Wikipedia. This excellent image: Image:Stela of Tuthmosis I.jpg by C. dawes was on Wikipedia for the longest time (2 years) until I moved it to Commons recently. My question is whether I could simply search through non-Commons public domain images posted on Wikipedia by typing in a name--like Ramesses or Amenhotep/Amenophis or Psusennes, etc--instead of wading through hundreds or thousands of public domain images which may or may not be not be in use on Wikipedia--and hence are not easily found. (many may lack the 'move to commons' tag) Do you have any clue how to locate them. With the photo ban in place at the Cairo Museum since 2005, its not easy to get people to download images on commons of objects there. Without Bodsworth's site, there would be many articles missing key images. But if these images are already on Wikipedia and simply not being used, someone should be able to find them in the first place. Any ideas? Leoboudv (talk) 07:04, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
I am sorry to say, I do not know of a way to do that. I tried to do some fiddling with a Google search but it didn't work. I imagine a bot could be programed to go through each image and find the public domain ones but I would not know how to search them. Sorry. - Icewedge (talk) 05:19, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Well thank you for your frank answer. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:00, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Matt Williams (right-handed pitcher)[edit]

I have undone your good faith move of this page. There have been two pitchers named Matt Williams in MLB, and the other one was left-handed. Hence, the title. The other one's page has not yet been created. -Dewelar (talk) 03:24, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, sorry about undoing the edit. I thought I could fix the page move with rollback, but apparently not. I'm still new at that bit. -Dewelar (talk) 03:28, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Its ok, my mistake about the page title. In the future though, don't revert anything aside from vandalism with rollback. - Icewedge (talk) 03:30, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
I thought this might fall under "unproductive edit", but perhaps not. Live and learn, I suppose. -Dewelar (talk) 03:36, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Fixed and I will get around to creating a template to decomplicate the process for future enlistees sometime soon. - Icewedge (talk) 05:44, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Thanks. It looks really complicated to sign in still. FYI, I have recently added some invaluable Commons pictures: Image:Turin statue of Seti II.jpg, Image:Mask of Amenemope1.jpg, Image:Psusennes I mask by Rafaèle.jpg. They were really needed for the articles on them. Of course, I told the flickr owner's about my use of their images. Some people are willing to change an image license and allow their images to be used on Vikipedia. But, I first made sure first that the image was really taken by them by inspecting their other posted flickr images. I think they call it CYA! Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:46, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

SocialVibe[edit]

Hey Icewedge. I noticed you patrolled an article I wrote on SocialVibe (my first) just before it got deleted. Any idea why it got deleted? Thanks for your support! Ferociouslettuce (talk) 03:24, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

The deleting admin did it under CSD A7 which specifies that articles about websites that contain no assertion of notability can be deleted on the spot with no discussion, I am not sure weather that website meets our general guideline for websites, WP:WEB, but I don't think it exactly meet CSD A7 as a claim of 150,000 users a month is not a bad asserion of notability, so I will ask the deleting admin to un-delete it then send it to our regular deletion process, articles for deletion, where you can argue your case. - Icewedge (talk) 03:44, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
I userfied it to User:Ferociouslettuce/SocialVibe so he could work on it. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:22, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Patriotic Nigras[edit]

Reflist[edit]

Hey, I dont know how familiar you are with how a reflist works, but i would like to set up my internal wiki so the reflist template works the same as wikipedia's, but as of now, whenever i type in {{reflist}} it will just copy whatever was in the template reflist. It ignores the <ref> fact </ref> that is above it. I have looked at wikipedia's template reflist and even tried to copy the source but that does not offer a solution. If you could help me out or point me to someone who could, it would be much appreciated. Huck1eberrie (talk) 16:35, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

It seems that Wikipedia's version of that template uses http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:TagParser which I doubt you have installed, instead try the below code as in your template.

This should work, if not try me again, I have a few other ideas. - Icewedge (talk) 04:42, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

That's basically it. Installing the "Parser hooks" extension will include that. {{reflist}} without column arguments is basically just a small <references />. Protonk (talk) 04:49, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

I think this is what Protonk is talking about: I put the code you supplied in the template, and all that shows up is for both the template page and any time i try to reference something. It does not actually reference. I looked into the Tag Parser, but i dont know how to get to the localsettings.php to manually install it. re: rodney gordon[edit]

sorry if that article sounded harsh, i was just annoyed that my original was speedy-deleted even with the 'hangon' bit, in the middle of me pointing out why he was notable.

wasted effort pisses me off, but your approach was probably a bit more mature if i'm honest :-/ --Dak (talk) 05:16, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion can be harsh but it is a necessary process of Wikipedia, ~4000 (or so I have heard) articles are deleted from Wikipedia every day, if every one of those had to go through WP:AfD we would be swamped. It is a shame that some articles, such at this one, are speedily deleted even though they were about notable subjects but sometimes it cannot be helped and it would be nice if each admin did a through review of each page before he deleted it but I imagine that after the first 20 pages they become so desensitized that they must forgo quality in favor of keeping the backlogs at bay, in the future include citations and claims of notability and you will be fine.
What you should not do in the future is create such pointy pages, sarcasm is very unhelpful.
Anyways, lets move on, at least you add content, not delete it (like me). Happy Zhongqiu Jie! - Icewedge (talk) 05:31, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
yeah, well the admin should have held off as we were discussing it on the talk page.
otoh, i'm now finding that i'm having to compliment a high-school student on being much more mature than me, so i guess i should have just calmly re-instated the article (which is what i'll do in future. i don't normally have tizzy fits on the internet).
cheers. --Dak (talk) 10:29, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Re: Kim Petras[edit]

The article wrongly referred to this person using the male pronoun when they self-identify as female. My edit was constructive. 75.161.131.145 (talk) 02:24, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Ah, yes. I do seem to have made a mistake with that revert, your edits were definitely not vandalism. I am unsure if I agree with the pronoun change as according to the article as Petras is still, physically, a Male, but I guess it seems reasonable, the article should be more clear on his sex at birth however. - Icewedge (talk) 02:55, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
I'd say that a) pronouns refer to gender rather than sex (gender is social, sex is biological), so they should be referred to by the pronoun of their gender, and b) it's considered good trans etiquette to use the pronouns they pick anyways. Besides, when you can't see their genes or what's in their pants, you tend to go by the visual cues and self determination anyway, so why not for her? 75.161.131.145 (talk) 03:38, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Well, I see that 74.73.105.19 (talk · contribs) (you?) has undid my changes and I guess you are correct, I will edit the article to make clear which sex she was originally though as I think right now it reads like she was born female. Icewedge 00:26, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
